LAST TRAIN HOME

Last Good Kiss
A move to Nashville and a line-up shift have not slowed Last Train Home. Frontman Eric Brace's increasingly soulful singing give his poignant songs about family loss, being heartsick and the power of love an emotional depth that comes only from real life experiences. Newly added piano player Jen Gunderman adds a richness to Brace's singing. 10 years into what started out a part-time adventure, Brace and LTH are impossible to place in a specific musical genre as they seamlessly incorporate touches of many musical style. While many musicians have a creative peak of about three records, LTH continue to grow and impress . -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (Red Beet)

GINA VILLALOBOS
Miles Away
Gina Villalobos follows up her outstanding Rock N` Roll Pony (2004) with the fantastic Miles Away. This 2007 album is a country-rock, world weary rumination on the struggles of maintaining a relationship. The song cycle works its way through longing, self-doubt, surety that there is another way to connect, anger (and more self-doubt), and a plea to be saved from herself. Villalobos combines her raspy voice with a muscular rock sound that uses country touches to add to the overall angst. Miles Away collects and displays Villalobos` emotions, failures and all, for the listener to pick through. The album concludes with no obvious resolution, leaving one to wonder how much strength she has left to do this all again. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles Of Music. (Face West Records)

SON VOLT
The Search
Stepping out of the comfort zone is destined to bother the most dedicated. Son Volt is looking to not just bother, but to kick old monikers in the teeth. Jay Farrar and the reconstituted Son Volt foray well outside of the confines of "alt.country" with tremendous results.Sitar-esque sounds are followed by Memphis R&B horns. You get the point. No style is sacred or excluded as Son Volt searches. Gone also are the restrained, mournful vocals that have become Farrar's trademark. Dare he sound excited? This is more than "toes in the water" musical exploration. This is trying on several styles to see what fits. Happily -- a strange choice of words when writing about the perpetually dour Farrar -- The Search expands the band's musical vision. Those expecting Son Volt to stick to the tried and true should put aside reservations and join the band on their journey. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (Sony/Legacy)

MARIA TAYLOR
Lynn Teeter Flower
This collection reveals a woman settling into her role as a solo artist, peeling back some of the layers of her last album ("11:11") to reveal a more organic sound. "Lynn Teeter Flower" mixes together soaring guitars, bubbly electronics, feathery farfisa organs, and sugary layers of vocals into the sweetest confection of an album you'll hear all year. Taylor's voice is as smooth and sweet as honey, spinning marvelous, insightful tales of the world around us with much aplomb.(Saddle Creek)

BRIGHT EYES

Four Winds
This single includes five exclusive b-sides. Retaining the simmering glow of its predecessors, ("Digital Ash In A Digital Urn" and "I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning"), "Four Winds" is full of the magic that brought Bright Eyes to international attention. Carefully played, deftly poetic, and quietly enchanting, it has a wandering country charm and all of the storytelling seductiveness of earlier work. (Saddle Creek Records)

HAYWARD WILLIAMS

Another Sailor's Dream
Hayward Williams' Another Sailor's Dream is a freewheeling, shotgun wedding of folk, blues and rootsy country rock, all filled with a gorgeous blend of ache, gristle and whiskey-toned gruffness. The album is comprised of songs that walk a perfect line between the sweet and bitter, and the sentimental and cynical. On this compelling debut the Milwaukee-based singer/songwriter boasts a voice that sounds several decades older than he actually is, lending his songs of love and loss a gravity they might not otherwise possess. GREENCARDS

Viridian
Viridian is the Greencards most progressive album to date, the next step in the evolution of the band's song and craft. Bridging the gap between traditional bluegrass, folk and the jamband scene, this album is the career defining piece needed to take the band to the next level. Rosanne Cash said: The Greencards are a little island of Truth and Beauty in a sea of artifice and mediocrity. What a fine group, and what a great collection of songs." and Buddy Miller echoes that sentiment, "I was blown away. These guys made a stunning record." (Dualtone Music Group)

NICK PAGLIARI
The Sail
It's been over a year since Nick Pagliari released his first solo project. The EP entitled, Long Gone, was independently released by the artist in August of 2005. One year later, Pagliari found himself in the same studio in Memphis, TN working again with producer, Scott Hardin. His first full-length solo album, The Sail as "... a medley of genres. There are folk songs, rock and pop songs, and rooted Americana influences as well. Our goal was to make a record that had a warm, rich sound like those early Stax recordings, while preserving the rawness and grit." (Madjack)

THE MOANERS
Blackwing Yalobusha
During the fall of 2006 the North Carolina-based garage-blues duo The Moaners decided to revisit their Mississippi roots and travel by van and backcountry blacktop to Yalobusha County, Mississippi. The mission: to record their latest album, Blackwing Yalobusha, with former Squirrel Nut Zippers founder and producer Jimbo Mathus. The site of the recording would be the world famous Fat Possum studios now dubbed Blackwings. Amid the thousand-pound heat and despite the unwanted attention of prickly local cops, the female duo churned out a slow burning collection of songs that chant and spit their way through the spirit world of the old south. The songs tell tall tales of barstool black belts and monkey tongues while tuned-down slide guitar tumbles through the delta landscapes of Faulkner and O'Connor. Drummer Laura King delivers a pounding with her steady, heavy-handed rhythmic chug-a-lug. (Yep Roc)

OKKERVIL RIVER
Black Sheep Boy: Definitive Edition
This is the definitive double-disc set which brings together Okkervil River's ground-breaking Black Sheep Boy project in its entirety-including the original album, the 7-song Black Sheep Boy Appendix EP, the song "The Next Four Months" (originally released on the "For Real" CD single), the "For Real" video as well as a new video of a magical alternate slower take of "No Key, No Plan". Black Sheep Boy is Okkervil River's most ambitious and cinematic record to date, a love story and adult fable carved in lacerating rock and roll, desolate late-night country weepers, and a few shining moments of sheer, shameless pop. Along the way, the compositions of Will Sheff evoke the mature songcraft of Leonard Cohen's New Skin for the Old Ceremony, the sophistication of Scott Walker's Scott 4, the shambling slow-motion bravado of Neil Young's On the Beach, and the raw nerves and trick effects of Big Star's Third/Sister Lovers.(Jagjaguwar)

DENVER GENTLEMEN
Introducing The Denver Gentlemen
The aptly named Denver Gentlemen can take credit for spawning an entire scene and for what is increasingly being referred to as the "Denver Sound." Forget six degrees of separation; members of 16 Horsepower, Slim Cessna's Auto Club, Devotchka, Munly & the Lee Lewis Harlots, Woven Hand, Kalamath Brothers, and Tarantella all spent time in the Gentlemen's ranks. Although heavily influenced by traditional roots music, they tone down the twang of other Denver groups, opting for a gothic-cabaret sound full of piano, accordion, and glockenspiel. Original Gentlemen Jeffrey-Paul Norlander and David Eugene Edwards (aka Woven Hand) formed the band in 1988. When Edwards left the group in 1991 to form 16 Horsepower, Slim Cessna and Frank Hauser jr. joined up briefly, then split to form the Auto Club. Norlander, putting the Gents on hold, followed Edwards's lead and himself joined 16 Horsepower. (Smooch)

"..Yours to Keep is more expansive than the Strokes, and sweeter: The opener, "Cartoon Music for Superheroes," is a seductive Beach Boys update complete with angelic harmonies; the slyly catchy "Bright Young Thing" sounds like a Seventies soft-rock hit sped up and fuzzed out; and "Holiday" is a jangly let's-run-away love song, with props to Jamaica..." -- Christian Hoard, rollingstone.com (New Line Records)

The brainchild of Emil Svanangen from Jonkoping, Sweden, Loney, Dear realized the dream of basement pop prodigies everywhere when his own home-recorded mp3s propelled him from blogosphere discussion thread to a contract with Sub Pop. With his debut, Loney, Noir, it is easy to see why the label was impressed. MARY-CHAPIN CARPENTER
The Calling
As a songwriter and performer, Mary Chapin Carpenter has long since transcended the traditional notions of genre and style, finding widespread acclaim for her poetic, elegantly-observed compositions. The Calling, her first release for Zoë/Rounder, is the most topical album she's made in her twenty-year career. While it unequivocally addresses issues both public and political - from the after-effects of Hurricane Katrina to religious zealotry to the trial-by-radio of the Dixie Chicks - there is also something deeply personal about this extraordinary collection of songs. The album is a powerful, provocative meditation on the mysteries of fate and circumstance, which mingles timeless questions with contemporary issues. (Zoe/Rounder)

RY COODER
My Name Is Buddy
On My Name Is Buddy, Ry Cooder revisits, in a new set of original material, the sound and feeling of the "dust bowl songs" he first explored more than three decades ago on such groundbreaking albums as his self-titled 1970 debut and 1971's In The Purple Valley. In fact, he's joined by old friends like pianist Van Dyke Parks and drummer Jim Keltner who were with him at the start of his extraordinary, ultimately globe-spanning musical odyssey. My Name Is Buddy is also a journey, a phantasmagorical rendering in music, words and pictures of the travels of three unlikely cohorts - Buddy Red Cat, Lefty Mouse and Reverend Tom Toad - as they meander through the west "in the days of labor, big bosses, farm failures, strikes, company cops, sundown towns, hobos and trains...the America of yesteryear." For this allegorical tale, Cooder marshals all his remarkable skills as a producer, arranger, songwriter, soundtrack composer and musicologist. As back-story to his songs, Cooder has written short stories for each one and they're accompanied by evocative illustrations from noted San Antonio-based painter and muralist Vincent Valdez, all of which are included in a specially designed package. SOUTH 40

Home
Tulsa-based South 40`s debut album Home catches its own reflection with a collection of songs that are both nostalgic and forward-looking. The album`s title is taken from the metaphoric place we all come from. For South 40, that place varies from song to song, but ultimately brings the listener into the common experience. We all have stories and memories from our past, some we`d like to forget, some we relive over and over. Built on the foundation of Oklahoma country, this band proudly flies it influences by name-checking Waylon, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Chris Ledoux in the album`s closing track. The band has wisely stuck to a no-frills and honest brand of country letting the songs and the playing carry the load. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (self-released)

A master of the one-liner, with an absurd rambling style, Zach's sharp, resonating humor makes his show at the famed Purple Onion in San Francisco one of the funniest performances in recent comedy. Off-stage, you will meet Seth Galifianakis, Zach's "twin brother." BOBBY BARE
A Bird Names Yesterday/Talk Me Some Sense (DUE 03.20.07)
Bobby Bare is, in some ways, a deceptive artist. His smooth, beguiling baritone and accomplished Countrypolitan productions sometimes tend to overshadow the fact that he is an artist of immense substance. Two of his most impressive country-concept albums are presented here, restored and remastered from the original RCA Victor master tapes, with a number of rare extra tracks. "A Bird Named Yesterday" was originally issued in 1967 and is, quite simply, stunning. "Somebody Bought My Old Hometown" is probably the closest Nashville has ever come to an anti-corporate diatribe and "They Covered Up the Old Swimming Hole" is a rant against the urban sprawl disguised as charming hick nostalgia. Most tracks make their first appearance on CD including a number of very rare "45" only cuts! A mighty and compelling collection. First time on CD! Deluxe collectors 16 page full color package featuring original LP artwork and exclusive liner notes. All tracks are remastered 2006 from the original master tapes! Compiled by noted musician (Snog, Soma, Black Lung) and film composer (The Hard Word etc.) David Thrussell. ANDREW BIRD
Armchair Apocrypha (DUE 03.19.07)
Chicago-based multi-instrumentalist and lyricist Andrew Bird picked up his first violin at the age of 4. Actually, it was a Cracker Jack box with a ruler taped to it, and the first of his many Suzuki music lessons involved simply bowing to the teacher and going home. He spent his formative years soaking up classical repertoire completely by ear so when it came time for a restless teen-ager to make the jump to Hungarian Gypsy music, early jazz, country blues, south Indian etc., it wasn't such a giant leap. It's fitting that now, though classically trained, he has instead opted to play his violin in a most unconventional manner, accompanying himself on glockenspiel and guitar, adding singing and whistling to the equation, and becoming a pop songwriter in the process. Armchair Apocrypha was recorded mainly in Minneapolis at Crazy Beast Studios (Ben Durrant) and Third Ear Studios (Tom Herbers). A cast of collaborators was drawn from the surrounding music scene: Drummer and keyboard player Martin Dosh, singer Haley Bonar, bassist Chris Morrissey, and multi-instrumentalist Jeremy Ylvisaker (who, along with Dosh, now features in Andrew's live lineup) added their talents to the album, which was mixed at the famed, haunted Pachyderm Studios in Cannon Falls, Minnesota. It is an album that sums up where Andrew's career has taken him, yet is completely very much of his artistic present. (Fat Possum)

From the rollicking "Blowin' Like a Bandit" to the wistful title track to the sauntering "Uncertain Texas," these finely crafted rock/folk-influenced country tunes are filled with undeniable charm and wit, arguably making Beter Days Clark's finest album of the '80s. GUY CLARK
South Coast Of Texas (DUE 03.13.07)
The 2006 reissue of Guy Clark`s 1981 release South Coast Of Texas is a wonderful reminder that this talented country singer-songwriter has been churning out well-made albums for quite a long time. Lovingly produced by Rodney Crowell, the album also features appearances by Ricky Skaggs, Rosanne Cash, and Vince Gill, as well as a slew of top-notch studio musicians. But it`s Clark`s songwriting that takes center stage, with tunes like `She`s Crazy for Leavin`` and `Heartbroke` (which later became a big hit for Ricky Skaggs) representing the man`s way with meticulously crafted lyrics, and melodies that blend the best of outlaw country with elements of folk and rock. Guests include Adrianne Verhoeven, formerly of The Anniversary and currently touring with Orenda Fink, and Eric Mardis from Split Lip Rayfield. (Remedy Records)

PAULA FRAZER AND TARNATION
Now It's Time (DUE 03.13.07)
Paula Frazer resurrects Tarnation...and the results are mesmerizing. This band had a good bit of success in underground circles before Frazer eventually dissolved the group and concentrated on her solo recordings. But after writing a bunch of new tunes that reminded her of her former band, Paula opted to release Now It's Time under the band's name as well as her own... This eleven track album features moody, personal, slightly distant soft pop tunes...all of which sound like forgotten classics. The arrangements are precise and appropriate...and Paula's vocals are exceedingly perfect from start to finish. Although released very early in the year, Now It's Time is bound to be one of the best albums of 2007. Highly recommended. (Rating: 5+++) /www.babysue.com (Birdman)

OLAV LARSEN & The Alabama Rodeo Stars
Love's Come To Town (DUE 03.13.07)
Already a cult phenomenon in Scandinavia and gaining quick revere in the UK, Olav writes songs that sublimely resonate with broken hearts, lost highways, sunshine daydreams and drunken promises. Astutely supported by his band, The Alabama Rodeo Stars, "Love's Come To Town" is adorned with acoustic guitars, fiddles, harmonica, dobros, pianos and accordions. And while that might sound downright reverent to his influences, Olav and his band deliver with an urgency and modernity that finds them sitting comfortably amongst the likes of Giant Sand, Wilco and Ryan Adams. As the UK's Maverick Magazine recently declared: "This is one of those rare happenings, an album that warms the cockles from uplifting start to fantastic, celebratory end. The more you play this the more you enjoy it until it becomes a best friend." (Hyena)

LOW

Drums & Guns (DUE 03.20.07)
Drums And Guns is the eighth full-length from Minnesota's Low, and their second for Sub Pop. While these songs feature new elements (looped vocals, drum machines, etc.), and are thoroughly, radiantly contemporary, they remain undeniably Low's. Jack Pereira, from harmoniummusic.com wrote, "... lyrically the album has countless highlights, the musical quality is turned up quite a few notches here in comparison to other Low albums. The quiet aesthetic remains, but songs like "Sandinista" and "Always Fade" are much busier, and the endless carousel of sounds create a hectic background for the fraught lyrics. Despite this seeming chaos, the muted nature of the music gives it a serene beauty, much like the lyrics: scathing yet artistic. (Sub Pop)

TED LEO AND THE PHARMACIST
Living With The Living (03.20.07)
For their fifth full-length (and first with Touch And Go), the band met up with Brendan Canty (Fugazi) to iron out a new set of anthems that arrive with a confident and outspoken immediacy. Some songs evoke the melodic spirit of Andy Partridge, Ray Davies, and "ArgyBargy"-era Squeeze, while others clink glasses with The Pogues, while still others find Ted taking his falsetto in new directions with vocals that caress each composition with the greatest delicacy and grace. Along with the punk sound and energy found in the group's previous works, this record finds soul, funk, and R&B injected into the mix. (Touch & Go Records)

JESSE MALIN
Glitter In The Gutter (DUE 03.20.07)
A raw, modern record of thirteen stellar songs that feels like a celebration of life. Jesse writes about struggles and smiles; about finding ways to "keep on keeping on" with the lyrically intimate slice of life and detail he's known for, while covering a larger palate. He conveys happiness and sadness in the same note, using both electric guitars and acoustics, modern keyboards and acoustic piano, power driven drums and happy jangly percussions with driving bass lines and big voice choruses. This is the 3rd album from the New York native and features guest appearances from Ryan Adams, Chris Shifflett [Foo Fighters], Josh Homme [Queens of the Stone Age] and Bruce Springsteen plus an intimate acoustic version of The Replacements' 'Bastards of Young'. Waylon Jennings' 1973 Honky Tonk Heroes album, widely credited for launching the Outlaw movement in country music, featured ten of Shaver's compositions. SISTER VANILLA
Little Pop Rock (DUE 03.20.07)
Featuring ex-Jesus And Mary Chain luminaries Jim Reid, William Reid and Ben Lurie with Jim and William's sister Linda on vocals, Sister Vanilla's Little Pop Rock is an exhilaratingly fresh pop record which also serves as a timely reminder of just how essential the seminal group from East Kilbride actually were. There can be no doubt that the song-writing on Little Pop Rock incorporates many elements that will be familiar to Mary Chain fans, but to focus solely on the input of the estranged Reid brothers would be a disservice to the vocals of their sister Linda. If the reconvening of Jim and William on the same album (since The Jesus And Mary Chain's final offering Munki in 1998) is some cause for celebration, it's the sheer strength of Little Pop Rock, the allure of Linda's vocals and how angry, reflective and urgent the songs sound that should have you throwing an all-out street party. UNCLE EARL

Waterloo, Tennessee, (DUE 03.13.07)
Haunting, playful, elegant, relentless...on their sophomore album Waterloo, Tennessee, the four women of Uncle Earl awaken the sleeping giant of old-time stringband music and hold it as a mirror to our present era. Resolutely modern, yet preserving the luminous mystery of its ancient origins, their music illuminates what is timeless in the everyday. Produced by John Paul Jones, Waterloo, Tennessee laces raucous fiddle tunes and jug band blues with ballads of loss and exile, love songs, and a profound longing that can only be echoed in the strains of fiddles, banjos, mandolins, crystalline tender harmonies, and the occasional wobbleboard. CHUCK E. WEISS
23RD & Stout (DUE 03.13.07)
Discom-bop-ulated jive' is how chuck e. weiss describes his fourth album '23rd and stout', his latest collection of songs from the bohemian front line. His songs rejoice in the dirtiest, moodiest, most finger-popping grooves - from the Cuban garageband surf guitar of Novade Nada to the loungebar swing of Primrose Lane. The lyrics are populated by a cast of oddballs, cool cats, midnight ramblers and low-rent chancers, all brought to life by the magic of Weiss's gruff, after-hours delivery. Scratch the surface of these narratives, and most times you'll find a real-life story. Like the one about the hustler who, many years ago, accosted Weiss in the street and asked him for 50 cents so that he could get himself down to 23rd & Stout. Produced by Weiss's Longtime Friend and the Band's Drummer Don Heffington.

What's Happening Around the MOM Offices

This week you will read about the power of ego, persuasion, and a good taco stand.

LAST WEEK YOUR JESTER related the somewhat arbitrary rules that I've applied as I'm working my way through older titles. Almost on cue, a friend sent me a 3 CD set of early '80s Boston punk rock. The part that you guys understand is this is part of the process of making sense out of the 200,000 titles that are in print.

Without someone putting music into categories of some sort it all becomes a big mess that is impossible to digest. I'd heard a lot of the bands on the Boston comp and own music by many of them. Because of this collection, I now have to go and further investigate the Real Kids and The Blackjacks.

Tim from the UK (although he us usually is some far off land) e-mailed me saying it sounds like our office is right out of High Fidelity. We take that as the highest compliment even if The Queen and Your Jester have mellowed over the years.

15-20 years ago we were way more arrogant about our "clearly superior" musical taste. Now, we struggle with the idea that the bands we crowned as the best of the young turks are old enough to be grandparents (if they happened to get an early start on having kids).

There is still a significant pleasure, though, in telling someone -- friend or foe -- that their musical taste blows. I just don't mean it as much as I used to.

TWO WEEKS AGO THE QUEEN and Your Jester went to a Neko Case show at the Henry Fonda Theater in Hollywood. Neko was fine. The Queen enjoyed the show more than Your Jester. But, to hearken back to an earlier, more arrogant period in my life, The Queen is flat out wrong. The show was god, not great.

But, the surprise opening act was Porter Wagoner with Marty Stuart. Wagoner is the latest "old timer" to get the "great lost treasure" treatment. When Cash got it, I understood. When Haggard got it, I understood. When I heard Porter got it, all I knew was he was the guy in the flashy suits on Grand Ol' Opry. I didn't understand.

Before the show The Queen and I hung out with a friend who talked about the really dark, twisted songs on many of Porter's old records.

Really? We had no clue.

Had we not had this conversation about Porter just prior to his taking the stage we would have wondered what the label was thinking. Having the back story about songs like Rubber Room made a huge difference. Having Marty Stuart sitting next to him was also a big help as Marty is one of the great, under-appreciated musicians. Stumbles and all (Porter's getting up there in years and his memory isn't what is once was) Wagoner was a treat. Because someone I trust made enough of a deal out of him, I listened and learned a little something.

Which is why I take the High Fidelity statement as such a compliment.
Yep, we're arrogant fans, but it comes from a place of wanting to share something special.

Until next week

The Queen, Your Jester, and DJ Jeff
