and LTH are impossible to place in a specific musical genre as they seamlessly

Gina
Villalobos follows up her outstanding Rock N` Roll Pony (2004) with the fantastic
Miles Away. This 2007 album is a country-rock, world weary rumination on the struggles
of maintaining a relationship.The song cycle works its way through longing, self-doubt,
surety that there is another way to connect, anger (and more self-doubt), and
a plea to be saved from herself. Villalobos combines her raspy voice with a muscular
rock sound that uses country touches to add to the overall angst. Miles Away collects
and displays Villalobos` emotions, failures and all, for the listener to pick
through. The album concludes with no obvious resolution, leaving one to wonder

Stepping
out of the comfort zone is destined to bother the most dedicated. Son Volt is
looking to not just bother, but to kick old monikers in the teeth. Jay Farrar
and the reconstituted Son Volt foray well outside of the confines of "alt.country"
with tremendous results.Sitar-esque sounds are followed by Memphis R&B horns.
You get the point. No style is sacred or excluded as Son Volt searches. Gone also
are the restrained, mournful vocals that have become Farrar's trademark. Dare
he sound excited? This is more than "toes in the water" musical exploration.
This is trying on several styles to see what fits. Happily -- a strange choice
of words when writing about the perpetually dour Farrar -- The Search expands
the band's musical vision. Those expecting Son Volt to stick to the tried and

It's been over a year since Nick Pagliari released his first solo project. The
EP entitled, Long Gone, was independently released by the artist in August of
2005. One year later, Pagliari found himself in the same studio in Memphis, TN
working again with producer, Scott Hardin. His first full-length solo album, The
Sail as "... a medley of genres. There are folk songs, rock and pop songs,
and rooted Americana influences as well. Our goal was to make a record that had
a warm, rich sound like those early Stax recordings, while preserving the rawness

During
the fall of 2006 the North Carolina-based garage-blues duo The Moaners decided
to revisit their Mississippi roots and travel by van and backcountry blacktop
to Yalobusha County, Mississippi. The mission: to record their latest album, Blackwing
Yalobusha, with former Squirrel Nut Zippers founder and producer Jimbo Mathus.
The site of the recording would be the world famous Fat Possum studios now dubbed
Blackwings. Amid the thousand-pound heat and despite the unwanted attention of
prickly local cops, the female duo churned out a slow burning collection of songs
that chant and spit their way through the spirit world of the old south. The songs
tell tall tales of barstool black belts and monkey tongues while tuned-down slide
guitar tumbles through the delta landscapes of Faulkner and O'Connor. Drummer
Laura King delivers a pounding with her steady, heavy-handed rhythmic chug-a-lug.

The
aptly named Denver Gentlemen can take credit for spawning an entire scene and
for what is increasingly being referred to as the "Denver Sound." Forget
six degrees of separation; members of 16 Horsepower, Slim Cessna's Auto Club,
Devotchka, Munly & the Lee Lewis Harlots, Woven Hand, Kalamath Brothers, and
Tarantella all spent time in the Gentlemen's ranks. Although heavily influenced
by traditional roots music, they tone down the twang of other Denver groups, opting
for a gothic-cabaret sound full of piano, accordion, and glockenspiel. Original
Gentlemen Jeffrey-Paul Norlander and David Eugene Edwards (aka Woven Hand) formed
the band in 1988. When Edwards left the group in 1991 to form 16 Horsepower, Slim
Cessna and Frank Hauser jr. joined up briefly, then split to form the Auto Club.
Norlander, putting the Gents on hold, followed Edwards's lead and himself joined
16 Horsepower. (Smooch)

is the solo debut from The Strokes' guitarist. Featured artists include Julian
Casablancas, Sean Lennon, Ben Kweller, and many others. The core trio is Albert
on guitars and vocals, joined by Matt Romano on drums and Josh Lattanzi on bass.

Justice hails from a rather small place on the map, Stillwater, OK, known for
spawning large talent like Jimmy LaFave, Garth Brooks, The Great Divide and fellow
Smith Entertainment Artists Cross Canadian Ragweed, Stoney LaRue, Mike McClure
and Jason Boland & The Stragglers. Having been a fixture in Stillwater since
2001, No Justice has developed a large following across Oklahoma and Texas.As
it is with any good organic creation, there is an aging process that needs to
occur in order to harvest the perfect blend. Country-rock tones weave in and out
of the band's solid release, thanks in part to recent recruit Brandon Jackson
on vocals/rhythm guitar, and the brothers Payne: Tony on bass and Jerry on lead

a songwriter and performer, Mary Chapin Carpenter has long since transcended the
traditional notions of genre and style, finding widespread acclaim for her poetic,

My Name Is Buddy, Ry Cooder revisits, in a new set of original material, the sound

For this allegorical tale, Cooder marshals all his remarkable skills as a producer,
arranger, songwriter, soundtrack composer and musicologist. As back-story to his

The
Weirdness is the fourth studio album - and first formal non-live release since
1973's Raw Power - by influental protopunk band The Stooges, featuring founding
members Iggy Pop, Ron Asheton, and Scott Asheton along with new bassist Mike Watt
(Minutemen/fIREHOSE) and Fun House saxophonist Steve Mackay. It is set for a March

Bobby
Bare is, in some ways, a deceptive artist. His smooth, beguiling baritone and
accomplished Countrypolitan productions sometimes tend to overshadow the fact
that he is an artist of immense substance. Two of his most impressive country-concept
albums are presented here, restored and remastered from the original RCA Victor
master tapes, with a number of rare extra tracks. "A Bird Named Yesterday"
was originally issued in 1967 and is, quite simply, stunning. "Somebody Bought
My Old Hometown" is probably the closest Nashville has ever come to an anti-corporate
diatribe and "They Covered Up the Old Swimming Hole" is a rant against
the urban sprawl disguised as charming hick nostalgia. Most tracks make their

Chicago-based
multi-instrumentalist and lyricist Andrew Bird picked up his first violin at the
age of 4. Actually, it was a Cracker Jack box with a ruler taped to it, and the
first of his many Suzuki music lessons involved simply bowing to the teacher and
going home. He spent his formative years soaking up classical repertoire completely
by ear so when it came time for a restless teen-ager to make the jump to Hungarian
Gypsy music, early jazz, country blues, south Indian etc., it wasn't such a giant
leap. It's fitting that now, though classically trained, he has instead opted
to play his violin in a most unconventional manner, accompanying himself on glockenspiel
and guitar, adding singing and whistling to the equation, and becoming a pop songwriter
in the process. Armchair Apocrypha was recorded mainly in Minneapolis at Crazy
Beast Studios (Ben Durrant) and Third Ear Studios (Tom Herbers). A cast of collaborators
was drawn from the surrounding music scene: Drummer and keyboard player Martin
Dosh, singer Haley Bonar, bassist Chris Morrissey, and multi-instrumentalist Jeremy
Ylvisaker (who, along with Dosh, now features in Andrew's live lineup) added their
talents to the album, which was mixed at the famed, haunted Pachyderm Studios
in Cannon Falls, Minnesota. It is an album that sums up where Andrew's career
has taken him, yet is completely very much of his artistic present. (Fat Possum)
Originally
issued in 1983 and re-released in 2006, Beter Days finds lauded Texas-born singer-songwriter
Guy Clark at the end of his late-'70s/early-'80s stint for Warner Brothers. From
the rollicking "Blowin' Like a Bandit" to the wistful title track to
the sauntering "Uncertain Texas," these finely crafted rock/folk-influenced
country tunes are filled with undeniable charm and wit, arguably making Beter
Days Clark's finest album of the '80s. (DBK Works)
The
2006 reissue of Guy Clark`s 1981 release South Coast Of Texas is a wonderful reminder
that this talented country singer-songwriter has been churning out well-made albums
for quite a long time. Lovingly produced by Rodney Crowell, the album also features
appearances by Ricky Skaggs, Rosanne Cash, and Vince Gill, as well as a slew of
top-notch studio musicians. But it`s Clark`s songwriting that takes center stage,
with tunes like `She`s Crazy for Leavin`` and `Heartbroke` (which later became
a big hit for Ricky Skaggs) representing the man`s way with meticulously crafted
lyrics, and melodies that blend the best of outlaw country with elements of folk

Legendary
Texas songwriter Guy Clark composes songs with the thoughtful attention and artisanal
mastery of a guitar-maker-which he also happens to be. His dryly sentimental songs
reflect an old-fashioned sensibility that emphasizes honesty, integrity, and carefully
chosen words. Clarks' recordings on Sugar Hill include some of his most well-loved
story-songs, and his plain-spoken delivery lends itself to his persona. Track

Perfect face is Arthur Dodge's fifth release but the first without his longtime
backing band the Horsefeathers. Incredible songwriting combined with a warm and
direct vocal delivery over a perfect blend of acoustic guitar, pedal steel, banjo,
electric piano and stand up bass. Fans of Bruce Springsteen's "Nebraska,"
early Tom Waits and Kris Kristofferson will find much to like here. Guests include
Adrianne Verhoeven, formerly of The Anniversary and currently touring with Orenda
Fink, and Eric Mardis from Split Lip Rayfield. (Remedy Records)
At
different times critics have called Jerry Douglas the Charlie Parker and the Jimi
Hendrix of the resophonic guitar. In addition to being widely acknowledged as
America's foremost master of the instrument, Douglas is a freewheeling, forward-thinking
recording artist whose output draws upon a bottomless well of musical inspiration,
incorporating elements of bluegrass, country, rock, jazz, blues and Celtic into

Paula
Frazer resurrects Tarnation...and the results are mesmerizing. This band had a
good bit of success in underground circles before Frazer eventually dissolved
the group and concentrated on her solo recordings. But after writing a bunch of
new tunes that reminded her of her former band, Paula opted to release Now It's
Time under the band's name as well as her own... This eleven track album features
moody, personal, slightly distant soft pop tunes...all of which sound like forgotten
classics. The arrangements are precise and appropriate...and Paula's vocals are
exceedingly perfect from start to finish. Although released very early in the
year, Now It's Time is bound to be one of the best albums of 2007. Highly recommended.

Already
a cult phenomenon in Scandinavia and gaining quick revere in the UK, Olav writes
songs that sublimely resonate with broken hearts, lost highways, sunshine daydreams
and drunken promises. Astutely supported by his band, The Alabama Rodeo Stars,
"Love's Come To Town" is adorned with acoustic guitars, fiddles, harmonica,
dobros, pianos and accordions. And while that might sound downright reverent to
his influences, Olav and his band deliver with an urgency and modernity that finds
them sitting comfortably amongst the likes of Giant Sand, Wilco and Ryan Adams.

happenings, an album that warms the cockles from uplifting start to fantastic,

Drums
And Guns is the eighth full-length from Minnesota's Low, and their second for
Sub Pop. While these songs feature new elements (looped vocals, drum machines,
etc.), and are thoroughly, radiantly contemporary, they remain undeniably Low's.
Jack Pereira, from harmoniummusic.com wrote, "... lyrically the album has
countless highlights, the musical quality is turned up quite a few notches here
in comparison to other Low albums. The quiet aesthetic remains, but songs like
"Sandinista" and "Always Fade" are much busier, and the endless
carousel of sounds create a hectic background for the fraught lyrics. Despite
this seeming chaos, the muted nature of the music gives it a serene beauty, much
like the lyrics: scathing yet artistic. (Sub Pop)

Of The Breed is a two disc, 22 song collection of newly recorded versions of country
classics by three of the genres most important and inflential artist. Last Of
The Breed was recorded in Nashville and produced by the extraordinary Fred Foster,
who also produced Nelson's You Don't Know ME: The Songs OF Cindy Walker. Some
of Nashville's finest were brought in for these sessions including steel guitar
legend Buddy Emmons and renowned fiddler Johnny Gimble. Beautiful backing vocals
were provided by the Jordanaires. Last Of The Breed has the sound and feel of
