RICHMOND FONTAINE

RICHMOND FONTAINE
The Fitzgerald
The 6th release for Portland’s Richmond Fontaine is a stark collection of bleak but fragile character studies and haunted atmospheres. The bare bones performances here are so stripped down and under produced, you can actually, at one point, hear the squeak from Willy Vlautin’s chair, upon which he plays acoustic guitar. This perfectly compliments the fact that he wrote these tunes while holed up in the Fitzgerald Casino Hotel in Reno, which sounds as likely to be the vantage point for these sharp, literary-minded tales. From the shadowy corners of the “biggest little city in the world” emerge the denizens of a broken hearted underworld – the sad gamblers and homeless not far from sight. There is depth and intensity in this muted, folksy offering, produced by JD Foster, which stands in high contrast to the band’s usual offering of energized alt. country. Pete Gow at AmericanaUK.com deservedly rates this record a “9 out of ten.”

RICHMOND FONTAINE
Obliteration By Time (New Recordings Of Old Favorites)
Most of the songs recorded for Obliteration By Time were written and rehearsed in Willy Vlautins old house. Back then the "jam room" down in the cellar was not much bigger then a shoebox. The band would plow through the tunes then come upstairs for air. ...

Post To Wire
Richmond Fontaine have to be one of the most fulfilling alt. country bands waiting to become hugely popular. Literate and deep, yet still accessible, their songs are rich character studies snapshots of the brokenhearted, the downtrodden and even the hopeful. Post To Wire takes on the loose feel of a concept piece, threaded with the postcard readings of one man on the lam, relating his misadventures to a friend back home. The songs themselves seem to support the feelings and observations of our main character, Walter. Disenchantment and anguish are revealed in darkly tinged, desert blown..

Winnemucca
Winnemucca sits at the crossroads of I-80 and US 95 in Northern Nevada. While not as flashy a place as Las Vegas, Reno or even Laughlin, its a favorite spot for the Richmond Fontaine boys. The town served as the inspiration for many of this discs tunes. Willy Vlautins songs are detailed snapshots of small town folks like the skinhead girl with "her scarred up white legs and her blood shot blue eyes" and Ray Thaves, riding the Greyhound through the desert " ...

Lost Son
For album #3, Richmond Fontaine's singer/songwriter Willy Vlautin has penned a set of dark character sketches that could all be about a "lost son." No, don't worry, this isn't a pompous concept album, rather it is full of tales of people on the fringe - a delivery driver and his hooker/girlfriend, a teenage runaway's life in Mexico, an on-the-edge security guard ...

Dave Harding
01. Jim Boyer - Time Spent
One of Portland's finest voices shines on this set of original rough hewn rootsy folk rock gems. Produced by Kevin Richey and featuring Paul Brainard on pedal steel guitar.

02 Mike Coykendall - hello hello hello
Old Joe Clark's frontman plays most of the instruments on this gorgeously tender pop and rock record. The lyrics tell of life in the turbulent 21st Century, while the beautiful music evokes Lennon and Pink Floyd.

03. Jerry Joseph - Cherry
A fine solo record from this Jackmormon and long time Northwest legend. Shades of the Pogues and Lowell George abound on this acoustic record. Joseph's gritty voice has never sounded better.

04. Satellite Inn - A Place in the Sun
Great dreamy, majestic album telling the tale of a rock band touring the midwest. This Italian band should be more well known in these parts.

05. John Lennon - Plastic Ono Band
Been listening to alot of John Lennon lately, but his first solo record is still my favorite. Shows the tender side of Lennon, as well as the angry, punk side. Incredible vocals, of course, but also some very moving guitar work as well.

06 The Beach Boys - Today/Summer Days(and Summer Nights!!)
Brian Wilson and Co. set the stage for "Pet Sounds" with these two incredible albums. Great writing, arranging and singing can be found all over these records. Some of my favorite summertime music, along with The Beatles, Motown, and Rush.
