A CRACKER! WEED PATCH Some Kinda Happy Some
Kinda Happy, the sophomore effort by Los Angeles-based Weed Patch, showcases songwriter
Neal Weiss's growing understanding and restless acceptance of the world around
him. Weiss explores life's totems, finding them flawed and maybe not as relevant.
Maturity, though, finds him happier and more at peace with smaller moments. Producer
Seth Rothschild returns and Centro-matic's Matt Pence comes on board to mix, while
the backing Patch has changed and soldified into a confident, exploratory group.
Drawing from influences as obvious as LA's psychedelic-influenced '80s Paisley
Underground, Athens jangle pop and millennium studio tweaking, Some Kinda Happy
is an excellent song cycle and satisfying album reflecting on growing old, but
more importantly, growing up. (Ohgrowupalready Records) Review

NEAL
WEISS HEAD PATCH Q & A
Describe the moment in which
music changed your life.
It
happens over and over again about once every few years, kinda like this: The Clash's
Give 'Em Enough Rope, Dream Syndicate's The Days Of Wine And Roses, the Replacements'
Let It Be, Uncle Tupelo's Anodyne, Sparklehorse's Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot,
Wilco's Summerteeth. I'm overdue for another.
I
wish I wrote this song, and why:
Britney Spears' "...Baby
One More Time," because financial independence = artistic freedom.
If
I could have been at any concert in history, what would it have been, and why?
Dylan at Newport, the Sex Pistols on the Thames, or Bob Marley anywhere
anytime.
What have you blatantly stolen and incorporated
into your songwriting or performance?
Too much to share. However
I have faith in the mediocrity of my own musicianship that I could never steal
so well that it is obvious.
With a gun to your
head, describe your music.
Fucked-up folk.
One
thing I hate about the music business is:
The seduction of the
pipedream.
Who is the artist your parents or older
sibling listened to that you swore you would never like but have come to appreciate?
Hal
Fishman
What song could you never cover because
it's just too damn good and you'd be afraid to ruin it?
Any
great Westerberg song. It was my own cover of "Sixteen Blue" that prompted
me to write my own songs, if only so I wouldn't feel so obviously inferior.
What's
one creature comfort you crave while on the road?
I crave the
road. I'll get it in my next lifetime.
I can die
after I've met:
A higher power.
What's
your favorite poison?
Caffeine.
The
best way to ride out a hangover?
Birth control.
If
you were a Simpsons character, which one would you be, any why?
Homer in the episode where he's tripping and Johnny Cash plays the voice of
the fox.
Rate these bands best to worst:
Journey,
Styx, Foreigner, Kansas. Explain your reasoning.
Foreigner,
Journey, Kansas, Styx.
No
explanation necessary. It's fact.
You've become
king/Queen of the world, what's your first move?
Stop time
and learn ProTools. | |
