A CRACKER! GREYHOUND SOUL Tonight And Every Night
The
desperate sadness pours forth from the first notes of Tonight and Every Night.
Self-doubt, unfulfilled yearning, the heartache of just continuing are exposed
like the most intimate details of a diary. Joe Pena's charismatic, grumpy whiskey-soaked
vocals slide over the band's oily-surfaced minor key song arrangements. Listing
to Tonight and Every Night as the title recommends might not be good for your
personal happiness, but once in a while when you really need to wallow this fabulously
painful album is the place to turn. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (Reslience Records) MORE

A CRACKER! JON ITKIN Big Gold Guitar In The Sky Serena
Markstrom distilled Jon Itkin's charm as a musician when she wrote, "Itkin's
agility with language shines in his short character sketches. Like James McMurtry,
he isn't from a working class background, but he channels the worries and stories
of people who live in a beaten-down world." Itkin joins a long list of songwriters,
like Guthrie, Springsteen and Van Zandt, who speak of and for the everyman. His
world-weary voice belies his youth while serving as a reminder of the plight of
the characters he inhabits. Itkin's strength is his ability to get to the emotional
heart of the song's subject. The simple acoustic backing, the character sketches
and the voice make Big Gold Guitar In the Sky captivating listening. This sophomore
effort reveals a talented young writer. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (self-released) MORE

A CRACKER! JOHN TRAIN Mesopotamia Blues
Like a methodical prosecutor laying his case before a jury, Mesopotamia Blues
has a quiet, sure handed elegance. John Train and primary songwriter Jon Houlan
uses the British rule of Mesopotamia as a parable for modern Imperialism and the
sadness and destruction that accompany ambition. Along with originals the band
mixes in selected songs and poems from such outside sources as John Stewart, Tom
T Hall, Butch Hancock and Rudyard Kipling. The band uses a professorial tone,
avoiding histrionics, to elegantly lay out how the follies of the past are repeated
when lessons are not learned. The weaved narrative of Mesopotamia Blues is compelling,
sad, and, also hopeful. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (Chapter 7) MORE

MARAH
Angels Of Destruction
Marah's sixth album, Angels of Destruction!, finds the kids from Philly in a brave
new world: new sobriety, new members and of course, new songs. Culled from a Niagara-like
output of songs over the past year, Angels of Destruction! is, as David Bielanko
puts it, "...the tip of the iceberg and the bottom of the well." Musically,
Angels Of Destruction! is Marah doing what Marah does. The album swings with abandon
and rocks with greasy soul, all the while paying its respects to the guy-and-a-guitar
simplicity that lives at the heart of every rock n' roll song. The title track
is a propulsive chilled-out rocker that hints at the larger themes of the album:
religion, redemption, destruction and joy. Much like this song and Marah as a
whole, Angels Of Destruction! is a phoenix rising from the ashes. (Yep Roc) MORE

RHONDA
VINCENT Good Thing Going
Blending soul, intensity, and tenderness, Rhonda Vincent's unique brand of bluegrass
is rich in tradition while remaining unmistakeably modern. Among the most beloved
figures in today's bluegrass scene, Vincent has earned an unprecedented seven
consecutive Female Vocalist of the Year awards from the International Bluegrass
Music Association, is a top concert and festival draw, and, with her road band
The Rage supporting her, is one of the most dynamic and high-energy performers
in any genre of music. Encompassing heartfelt ballads and hard-driving bluegrass,
along with dashes of swing and country, Good Thing Going is her most varied, personal,
and accomplished album to date. It is also her most joyously uplifting, from the
celebratory, autobiographical title track to the touchingly heartfelt "I
Give All My Love To You." Special guests include Keith Urban, Jesse McReynolds,
Russell Moore, Bryan Sutton, Becky Isaacs-Bowman, Stuart Duncan, Kathy Chiavola,
Andy Hall, and more! (Rounder) MORE

WUSSY
Left For Dead
"Their second album is less superb than 2005's Funeral Dress. But it's still
fairly superb. Then, former Ass Pony Chuck Cleaver had a hand in seven of eleven
songs; now, his partner in art and life, Lisa Walker, takes eight of twelve. More
soulful, sinewy and sexy than first appears, Walker's solicitous voice suits lyrics
that mix goodly dollops of Midwestern Christianity- angels, Communion, a Christmas
play, "Killer Trees" that probably include the one where a man named
Jesus was left for dead - with the occasional "love is running down my chin."
But she's more seductive balanced up against Cleaver's pissed-off tenor and anxious
falsetto, as in the irresistible infidelity duet "What's-His-Name."
Instrumentally, imagine a Yo La Tengo too tight to get cute or far out dispensing
a Velvet Underground derivative fluent enough to warm the erectile tissue of anyone
with a thing for guitar drones...." Robert Christgau, rollingstone.com (Shake

MATTHEWS If You Saw Thro' My Eyes
One of the founding members of Fairport Convention, Ian Matthews left that group
in 1969 (during the recording of Unhalfbricking) to pursue a solo career. Originally
released on Vertigo, 1971`s If You Saw Thro` My Eyes was Matthews` fourth post-Fairport
release and his most accomplished to date. Finding him reunited with former bandmates
Sandy Denny and Richard Thompson this album features many fantastic originals
and three well chosen covers, including Richard Farina`s Reno Nevada and exemplifies
Matthews` unique ability to mix folk, country, blues and pop. A British folk-rock
classic back in print. (Water) MORE

MATTHEWS Tigers Will Survive
1971 found former Fairport Convention lead singer Ian Matthews not only extremely
prolific but surprisingly consistent. Tigers Will Survive, originally released
on Vertigo in November of that year, is no exception. Featuring backing from British
band Quiver (which included Bruce Thomas, later of the Attractions, and Tim Renwick,
who played with David Bowie among others). Tigers Will Survive, as was Matthews`
style, is a brilliant collection of originals and choice covers (including Eric
Andersen`s classic Close The Door Lightly When You Go and an acapella version
of The Crystals` Da Doo Ron Ron. Mellow folk-rock jams of the highest order. (Water) MORE

What's
Happening Around the MOM Offices | Sneaking
a peak, and the power of the live album.
WHEN
YOU VISIT A NEW HOME for the first time what is the second thing you do? Ok, after
you've put down your coat and been handed a glass of wine? Right, you look through
the CD collection. Doesn't everyone do that? The Queen and I visited a friend's
home for the first time over the weekend. We've known art supply Rob since The
Queen was in art school. It took 16 years to finally get together socially. Crazy,
huh?
We
got there and coats came off. It was a frigid mid-50s in the Los Angeles basin
so we had to dress warm. You think I'm kidding. After getting handed a nice glass
of Prosecco (apparently, the new in "sparkling white wine" this season)
I floated over to the CD racks are started looking. It is impulsive behavior.
If there is music, in any format, I have to look.
So
Art Supply Rob favors classical music. Heavy stuff like Wagner operas. Your Jester
doesn't know much about classical music beyond seeing John Williams conduct the
LA Philharmonic through his very popular movie theme songs.
I
scan the shelves.... Beethoven... Strauss, operas, suites... those impressive
Sony Classical double jewel case collections that are in the box... So far I have
nothing to grasp on to other than Rob and I do not circle in the same musical
universe.
Then
I see it. The last shelf Rob has collected all of his "songwriters that can't
sing" CDs. His "popular culture" music consisted solely of Bob
Dylan, Lou Reed, Leonard Cohen, and Neil Young music. I am a big fan of all of
those guys but, honestly, I'm a little dumbfounded by how this very narrow grouping
of music fits in with the classical.
Most
collections have a linear feel. You can typically find starting and ending points,
the most extreme examples of the person's taste. Filled in the middle is the
bulk of the collection. Rob's collection lacked that. It was as if these were
two separate and unequal collections of music.
I
popped my head up and asked, "So, what's with the shelf of the songwriters
that can't sing?" Rob, who had already started celebrating before we arrived,
shrugged his shoulders, grinned and said, 'I don't know. I just kind of like those
guys."
That
was the entirety of his reply. Quickly, the subject was changed to food (since
the host and many of the guests were "foodies").
As
the evening progressed the amateur chefs talked about food and cooking the way
my friends talk about music. There was a tremendous passion in the food discussion.
There was also a lot of machismo as these chefs talked about successfully executing
a dish. The conversation was way more graphic and descriptive, but you get the
point.
The
meal, a chicken breast seared in a vermouth sauce, was delicious. The conversation
about the food was pretty amazing. Classical music quietly played in the background.
THE
LIVE ALBUM is under-appreciated. Dismissed as "a contract fulfiller"
or "something to sell from the stage", live albums are the step-children
of recorded music. Earlier this week the Mangler was talking about his favorite
recent releases. Three of them are live albums. He continues to rave about the
live Mott The Hoople disc that came out last year. He loves the Terry Anderson
disc from a few months ago and is digging the upcoming Webb Wilder release. Whether
he would consider any of these his favorite release by those artists is debatable,
but they provide a different view into a band. There will always be a place for
a band that can do it in the studio and also do it live.
In
an era where a "band" is frequently one guy with his home computer and
talent, the artistry of a great live performance often gets overlooked. The live
album, when released at the right time in an artist's career, is essential. We
all differ on when that moment should be but an agree that a recording of a live
performance has a value... especially when it is traded for another live recording.
2008
LOOKS TO ALREADY BE A good year for music. Interesting times make for intersting
art. Let's enjoy the ride and hope it is less bumpy than 2007. Happy new year
to all.
Until
next week, The
Queen, Your Jester, and The Mangler | |
