IT'S
A CRACKER! RICH
HOPKINS The Horse I Rode In On
The belief is good art comes from hard times. It appears Hopkins has had some
stumbles over the last couple of years in the relationship area. The Horse I Rode
In On is filled heartbreak: expressions of love that end in heartbreak, apologies
that end in heartbreak, anger that dissolves into heartbreak. The album -- Hopkins'
first since 2003 -- features his stock-in- trade roots-rock sound, and hearty
and sometimes off-key warbling, and guitar mastery. Some artists try to hide the
pain behind metaphor. Hopkins has chosen to rip his chest open and show you his
broken heart. Too bad something bad happened to Rich, but the results are the
gloriously painful The Horse I Rode In On. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (San
Jacinto) REVIEW

IT'S
A CRACKER! BOW THAYER Spend it All
Bow
Thayer's low-key, literate country-rock works against him if all the listener
wants is atmosphere. The attentive listener will be rewarded with a very promising
songwriter and musician. On Spend It All, Thayer uses wit and candor to tell tales
of his life in Vermont. Musically, he draws on the Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia's
bluegrass leanings. This is a gentle elegance to his music. Levon Helm gets "with"
billing on this release. While Helm expertly handles the heart of the songs, his
getting mention on the cover might overshadow Thayer who is worthy of solo billing
on this excellent release. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (Crooked Root) REVIEW

DEFENSE Autumn Defense For
their third album, self-titled The Autumn Defense, Pat Sansone and John Stirratt
took some time away from their duties as members of Wilco to write and record
new material in Chicago. They recovened with their rhythm section of the last
six years: drummer Greg Wieczorek, and producer/ session man Brad Jones, as well
as other Autumn Defense regulars pedal steel player John Pirruccello and horn
player Steve Tyska. With string and flute performances that brought Sansones
light orchestral arrangements to life helped provide a truly organic feel to the
recordings,The Autumn Defense is the culmination and continuation of what the
band has reached for in the last two records, from Philly-soul to baroque to bossa-nova
to the classic Southern-California sound of. A world of voices are explored, styles
are touched on, and made their own. (Broadmoor Records) MORE

THE
SCRUFFS Pop Manifesto The
Scru's got their start in the same fertile Memphis soil as Big Star back in '77,
earning accolades for their pristine power-pop upon the release of Wanna Meet
The Scruff's?. They relocated to New York City for three years in hopes of catching
their big break, but eventually returned to Memphis - where the band essentially
became a sole proprietorship for leader Stephen Burns. Burns continued to write
and record over the next few years, ultimately releasing those songs as the well-received
Midtown album before relocating to Glasgow in '98. There he recorded two albums
with members of Teenage Fanclub and Belle and Sebastian, Love, The Scruffs, and
Swingin' Singles. Burns is back in the States these days, with a stellar new album
recorded with his now-permanent band in Glasgow's CaVa Studios and mixed at legendary
Ardent Studios in Memphis. The record is a must for any pop music fan who wants
jangling guitars, driving bass, stunning melodies and soaring vocals and orchestration.

OLD CEREMONY Our One Mistake
"The Old Ceremony is a rootsy, American slow rock, the kind of rock that
you get when you mix a little bit of Tom Waits' grumbing croons and a whole lot
of Paul McCartnian songwriting elan. TOC welcomes all the hokey riffs we're used
to hearing in good pop, but it's nevertheless powerfully earnest music. "no
we won't be fooled for long," songwriter/raconteur Django Haskins sings,
adding with a high-pitched moan, "by [sic] love!" The band calls it
pop-noir. But in truth, this is folk; this is rock; this is precisely what it's
supposed to be."- K.C., Knoxville Metro Pulse (sonablast) INFO

What's
Happening Around the MOM Offices | This
week you will read about smoke on the water, and the momentary arrival of winter.
IN
OUR BUSINESS UP FRONT SECTION we are proud and relieved to announce that the phones
numbers are (mostly) back in proper working order. The old phone numbers work.
The new temporary phone numbers still work. We've been getting loads of calls
from confused folks (sorry about that) who are happy to get something other than
a busy signal. Thanks for your patience while we sorted that out.
HOW
ABOUT THAT DELUGE of "Cracker" releases last week? Obviously we were
holding them during the holidays so they wouldn't get lost, but if that batch
is any indication of what is to come in 2007, we're going to be musically very
happy. Your Jester can't do much about the global warming/climate change debate,
whether Simon Cowell of American Idol should show Bob Dylan more respect, or how
to get the Manning brothers not to stink in the NFL post-season, but we can keep
on rockin' (or twangin', if you prefer) in the free world.
Speaking
of rockin' in the free world, someone near The Queen and Your Jester's homestead
must've received a new electric guitar as a holiday gift. From somewhere in the
neighborhood, we can hear rudimentary skills banging out the opening chords to
Smoke On The Water. When Your Jester was a young pup, Smoke On The Water, along
with Yes' Roundabout and Zep's Stairway to Heaven were three songs, or at least
openings, that everyone of us who ever picked up a guitar hacked at. I suppose
Smoke On The Water has lasted this long because the riff is relatively easy for
the beginner.
Are
there songs that fit that role in country, folk or bluegrass that every rank amateur
plucked out the first time a guitar was strapped on? If there are any, let me
know. I'll tell the neighbor kid if I can find him. Otherwise, I might have to
suffer through Roundabout.
WINTER
THREATENED TO ARRIVE TODAY. The skies actually got cloudy. Since reporting last
week that a customer played golf in Pennsylvania in January, I have heard stories
of 70+ degrees in Boston, mid 60s in Baltimore, and 55 and no snow in Buffalo.
If the rest of the country keeps this up I'll have no good reason to stay in Los
Angeles as decent weather is one of the few good excuses I can give to callers
who question my sanity and taste for living here.
THE
QUEEN AND YOUR JESTER are again sharing an office. It has been awhile since we
sat across the room from each other collaborating on the weekly missive in real
time. While I'll admit that we still IM each other, it is much easier to work
out the holes that inevitably appear as we prepare to publish every Thursday.
Over
the years many people have questioned, with legitimacy, how The Queen and Your
Jester can spend so much time together. Three words: Daily Boxing Match. Once
a day we strap on the gloves, go toe-to-toe in the sweet science, work out aggressions
and get back to work. Or, we got really lucky and enjoy each other's company.
We're
a couple of weeks into our new arrangement and, so far, she hasn't had to tell
me to go get the gloves. Until
next week
