It's A Cracker !

IT'S A CRACKER!! THE BEST OF THE BANDS YOU'VE NEVER HEARD!

CRACKERS ! (Buy it, you'll like it. Or we'll take it back. Only those with "It's A Cracker!!" above the title.)

IT'S A CRACKER!
DUMB ANGEL
Ghost Dance
Dumb Angel, the stage name for Shaun Mason. The stage name in no way fits the intelligent music he has created. This solo debut by the mid-twenties Mason is sensitive and ethereal. In a word: gorgeous. Mason's searches for his sense of place while picking out beautiful melodies on his acoustic guitar. Mason evokes Nick Drake, Mark Kozelek (Red House Painter), and Sam Beam (Iron & Wine) as he quietly explores his inner emotions. Mason's solo debut establishes him as an artist to watch. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (self-released)

IT'S A CRACKER!
SOUTHER STILL
Dizziness and Darkness
The sound is eclectic while not disconnected. There is gentle '70s soul-pop, aching country laments, a pinch of punk, and the trash of meshing Crazy Horse guitars. Yet, Dizziness and Darkness is cohesive. There is no doubt, track-to-track, that this is the same band but they manage to incorporate a variety of texture that make them impossible to pigeonhole. Fans of Whiskeytown, Grand Drive, Minibar, and the aforementioned Crazy Horse will find this 2006 release to be a winner. Songwriters Bradley Putze and Kevin Stokes have a way of lulling you, only to smack you around with a wry passage. Gentle, spacey, rocking, and original. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (Open Plan Records)

IT'S A CRACKER!
KARA SUZANNE & THE GOJO HEARTS
Aumsville
Kara Suzanne's expressive, emotionally wide-ranging voice gives this release its kick. One moment she is melting your heart with a mournful torch song, then she's shaking her sassy finger at you. The Gojo Hearts never let Suzanne get too far out in front. Suzanne is the show, but much like the original Lone Justice kept Maria McKee in line, The Gojo Hearts keep this from becoming all about Suzanne's terrific voice. Through the course of the album they explore country balladry, bluegrass, jazz, and turn-of-the-century Western barroom music, all of which Suzanne masters. A terrific debut from a talented band. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (Ksue Productions)

IT'S A CRACKER!
WILD CARNATION
Super Bus
Old school Hoboken is in the house. Veterans of The Feelies, Trypes, and Speed The Plough have returned with their first new album since 1995's Tricycle. Brenda Sauter's disconnected Nico-like vocals front the not-surprising '80s New Wave feel. Sauter is joined by guitarist Richard Barnes, and drummer Christopher O'Donovan, produced by fellow Hoboken native James Mastro. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (Lucky Pig)

BILL KIRCHEN
Hammer of the Honky-Tonk Gods
Telecaster-master Bill Kirchen, joined by Nick Lowe, Geraint Watkins, Robert Trehern, Austin DeLone, Cindy Cashdollar, Paul Riley and others, showcases his tasteful guitar virtuosity along with an emphasis on his song writing. Kirchen cuts a wide path of Americana- styles, touching on country, rockabilly, and vintage R&B giving the record a varied, but cohesive sound typically described as "dieselbilly". Kirchen's work as a critically acclaimed solo-artist as well as a member of Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen, will enjoy Hammer Of The Honky Tonk Gods. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (Proper America)

SNEAKERS
Nonsequitur Of Silence (Bonus Tracks) (Rmst)
Even as the first sounds of new wave and punk rock were being heard in New York City in the mid-'70s, the first stirrings of "indie-rock" and "guitar pop" were occurring in the unlikely locale of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where Chris Stamey, Will Rigby and Mitch Easter were recording arguably the first "low-fi" records ever in their band the Sneakers. Though heard by few, the reverberations from these recordings spread everywhere from New York-where Stamey and Rigby were to form the dB's-to Athens, Georgia-where a band named R.E.M. hooked up with Easter to record their first two albums-to just about every college radio station in the land during the '80s. Now, Stamey and Easter have gone back into the studio to produce the definitive look at this seminal power pop band, consisting of tracks from their 1976, Don Dixon-produced EP 'The Sneakers', their 1978 LP 'In the Red' and their 1992 "reunion" record, 'Racket', plus three unreleased bonus tracks, all (except the debut EP) remastered and/or remixed for superior sound. WARM IN THE WAKE

Gold Dust Trail
Warm In The Wake describe their music as simple American songs that have been gently thrown into the space rock realm. Their Livewire Recordings debut Gold Dust Trail, with tracks produced by Adam Lasus (Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Yo La Tengo, Helium), is a fine mix of verses and audio flashcards, character sketches, rough-hewn acoustic ballads, and bent rhymes. Gold Dust Trail is a beautiful launch for this band`s excursion. From the Wilco-esque intro of `Tame Thoughts` to the feel-good Southern swing of `Hearts vs. Heads,` the music is immediately familiar, yet unquestionably the band's own. Warm In The Wake envelop the listener in waves of sonic pleasure. And while sonically pleasing, the lyrics are sure to entice the most discerning listener. (Livewire)

JAMES YORKSTON

Year Of The Leopard
Yorkston's third release confounds categories once again. It's an uplifting, arresting, intimate, and subtle album. It features a blending of James's extreme-close-up vocals with an acoustic guitar, electric piano, clarinets, violin, and concertina, and a gently thrumming rhythm section. "This is music that slowly charms rather than immediately stuns you. Once there, the lovely, understated melodies, autumnal arrangements, and warm, wry lyrics are virtually impossible to shift" - The Guardian. (Domino Recording Co.)

LITTLE DIESEL

No Lie
". . .Future dB's Peter Holsapple, Will Rigby & Chris Stamey - along with that other NC power-pop giant Mitch Easter - all had a role in Little Diesel... Originally recorded by Stamey "in his bedroom" back in 1974/5, the seventeen tracks were cleaned and polished by him in 2006. . . then released with high school yearbook pix of all the players on the label side of the CD... What we've got here is the work of a brace of enthusiastic high schoolers showing off their smarts with a buncha cool covers and dipping their toes into the act of writing tunes themselves. Holsapple appears to have been the primary creative force behind the band's three original tracks... Though Little Diesel has great taste in covers on more than occasion you can hear the material defeating 'em. Like most young bands, LD frequently shores up its lack of experience with youthful enthusiasm. Lead singer Bob Northcott is an inspired babbler while young Rigby gets a lot out of his small drum kit and electric guitarists Holsapple and Tommy Eshelman (who appears to do the big solos) provide plenty of good garagey noise. . . Holsapple and Rigby disappear with the last three re-polished tracks - to be replaced by Stamey, Easter plus Chris Chamis on drums. . .All in all, this makes for an amusing musical footnote. . . " -- Bill Sherman, blogcritics.org (Telstar)

JOHN MELLENCAMP

Freedom’s Road
"John Mellencamp's country has fallen on dangerous times. Ghost towns haunt the highways, adults brutally exploit children on country lanes, and the devil lurks just around the bend on even the finest roads. Something's happening here, as Buffalo Springfield might have said, and while Mellencamp doesn't find much to celebrate, he does find reasons for hope. That hard-fought optimism and the search for commonality that fuels it lays the foundation for his strongest album in years." ---Brian Mansfield, usatoday.com

LILY ALLEN

Alright Still
". . .an enormously likeable little album that, while far from the most consistent piece of work, exudes the kind of personality and sass we rarely see from mainstream pop singers anymore. With the assistance of such songwriters and producers as Future Cut, Greg Kurstin, Mark Ronson, and Pablo Cook (among others), Allen displays a preoccupation with a wide variety of styles, from ska and rocksteady, to the Madchester stylings of Happy Mondays, to the drollness of Ian Dury, to hip-hop, to rock (good examples of her varied musical interests can be heard on her two mixtapes put out earlier this year), creating an ebullient musical backdrop for her lyrics, which have a tendency to be biting, heartfelt, and hilarious at the same time." -- Adrien Begrand, popmatters.com (Capitol)

PAT MACDONALD

Troubador Of Stomp
You may best remember Pat MacDonald as one half of the husband and wife duo Timbuk 3, the Austin-based act that spawned a Billboard top 20 hit in 1986 with "The Future's So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades". Now, with the unfortunate dissolution of his second marriage, MacDonald is embarking on another journey,"Troubadour of Stomp", a collection of dark, introspective, highly personal songs penned during and following his divorce. From the deeply cathartic "Wish You Would Die", to the acceptance of "Thanks Man" (a song where MacDonald thanks a friend for sleeping with his wife, and makes no bones about making it clear why the marriage is dissolving). Through the comical "This Band Sucks", MacDonald may be having a bad year, but he uses that to his advantage. All played in his 'Troubadour of Stomp' style (thus the title of the record), a sound that features only his low-tuned, distorted guitar, harmonica, voice, and a board to stomp on for percussion. Fusing blues, rock, folk, indie slyness, and darkness into a late-night, subdued party gone awry, MacDonald takes the one-man band into new heights, bucking the conventional for a sound that is anything but. (Broken Halo Records)

MILLION/BILLION

Ready Fire Aim
Gavin Bellour (guitar, vocals), Brian Ulrich (drummer) and Yonatan Elkayam (keys/bass, upright, harmonica…), first came together as LA based trio million/billion in 2005. Their music is all embracing, their style eclectic. Their sound -combines punk-folk intensity, classic-rock hooks, pop jangle, Western twang, jazz-tinged filigrees and soul grooves with ease. The band's unique formula has already made them a BMI Pick of the Month, earned them opening spots for international music icon Beck and such acclaimed artists as Ray Lamontagne, Shooter Jennings, Keaton Simons and others (Mercy Records)

CLAP YOUR HANDS SAY YEAH

Some Loud Thunder
"...because whatever it lacks in straightforward pop tunes, this album makes up for in rich, multilayered weirdness. Gorgeous guitar melodies swoop across dancing basslines, sink beneath carnivalesque swirls, do battle with random crackles and fuzz. Underwater (You and Me) is the most immediately engaging moment, a buoyant song of blue skies and floating balloons, but eventually even such recalcitrant oddities as Emily Jean Stock and Goodbye to Mother and the Cove unveil their loveliness and grow irresistible." --Maddy Costa, guardian.co.uk (Clap Your Hands Say Yeah)

XAVIER RUDD

Food In The Belly
This singer-songwriter-multi-instrumentalist brings clear vision, personality, and an independent attitude to his beguiling songs. His debut is a collection of soulful melodies and dense instrumental textures that takes the work of classic singer-songwriters as template (he's a professed Paul Simon fan). An advocate of Aboriginal rights, Rudd also admires the dense simplicity of Aboriginal music, often building his songs from his bare soles on a wooden resonator box and the breath humming in his didgeridoo. IT'S A CRACKER!
TED RUSSELL KAMP

Nashville Fineline
Nashville Fineline offers proof that this has been a very prolific period for Ted Russell Kamp. And much like Nashville Fineline`s concurrent release, Divisadero, it was written and recorded on the road - while playing bass with Shooter Jennings, mostly - and other various locations in Kamp`s home base of LA. But Music Row is definitely on the map here as we find Kamp co-writing the bulk of the material with several Nashville writers. And while it seems like some of the tracks might be pushing for radio-ready country, he keeps them grounded with his natural manner and simple production. Kamp handles a variety of strings, keys and horns taking musical assistance from pals Eugene Edwards (guitar), Mike Sessa (drums), Avi Sills (drums), Tony Paoletta (pedal-steel), Eric Heywood (pedal-steel), Brian Wheelan (electric piano, guitar) and Michael Webb (Hammond organ). A vocal appearance by the late Robin Wiley on the funky bayou rocker "Swamp Water Whisky" deserves a special note. -- Robinson, Miles Of Music (Poetry Of The Moment)

IT'S A CRACKER!
TED RUSSELL KAMP

Divisadero
Of late, multi-instrumentalist Ted Russell Kamp can be cited as a workhorse touring member of Shooter Jennings` band, The 357`s. With much of his latest release written - and even recorded - primarily on the road, Divisadero guides us through a division of one man`s time, mind and heart; and Kamp comes through with smart lyrics and a rich, coarse drawl to give it all credibility. Some of his "classic" minded numbers recall Nick Lowe when he`s wearing his "Cowboy Outfit." Others, including the funky and smooth duet with Shooter, "Better Before You Were Big Time", have a decidedly Leon Russell-esque quality about them. The disc featuring numerous other special guests from his many Nashville, Los Angeles and "Jennings" associations including, among others, Eric Heywood (pedal-steel), Eugene Edwards (guitar), Gina Villalobos (vocals) and a special vocal appearance by Jessi Colter on the tender "Looking For Someone". -- Robinson, Miles Of Music (Poetry Of The Moment)

What's Happening Around the MOM Offices

This week you will read about asking for too much information and getting ready for a summer harvest.

AS PART OF OUR CHANGE YOUR JESTER IS LESS BURDENED by the rigors of day to day people management. To some this will sound strange, but longtime readers know that Your Jester is absolutely thrilled to be answering more phone calls? Since we don't have an evil overlord breathing down our necks to "reduce your units of time allocation per customer" (meaning, cut the calls short), Your Jester has been a veritable Chatty Cathy.

I'll use nicknames as not to embarrass any of the callers, but this week alone I spoke to a "Dr. B" who moved from the the second best land of cheese (after California) to the home town of Otis Redding. Engineer Michael from the government lab used to play in bluegrass bands with Ron Block and Tony Rice, Larry from Dallas (a first time caller) stumbled across us because he was looking for a Minibar CD after seeing them open for Pete Yorn. Turns out Larry grew up in Missouri and was a big Uncle Tupelo fan "way back when" only to have drifted away from music.

I've said it before, but this is the priceless stuff that makes the rest of the "running a business" junk so worthwhile.

ONE OF THE BACK CHANNEL conversations Your Jester has been having with FOJ (Friends of Jester) is the quality of music. Sure, everyone talks about quantity since all it takes is a computer and an inclination can make music. The part that gets overlooked is the abundance of quality music that is available.

I'm going to take a moment to single out Kara Suzanne and Dumb Angel, two new releases we have this week. The Queen and I hear lots of very good new music. With both of these artists we hear something special. This isn't to say every week isn't filled with releases that are worthy of attention. Your Jester is an unassuming, kind of quiet (if not completely nosy) guy. So I rarely will get on my soapbox to shout about anything.

I've pointed out the two above not to single them out for the other great music, but to use them as an example of how I might undersell the quality of the releases. It has been years since I've felt that there is something special in the musical air. I'm calling it now, I think this is going to be an exceptionally good year for musical quality.

Or, maybe I'm in a better mood because I get to talk about cattle ranching, the Georgia Museum of Music, gourmet cooking, and the excitement over rediscovering music. You folks lead some interesting lives and thank you for allowing us to be part of it.

Whatever the reason, even with the abundant changes taking place in the business of music, fundamentally, there is really interesting music being made.

Until next week

The Queen, Your Jester, and DJ Jeff
