IT'S
A CRACKER! THE DIRTY 30S The Dirty 30s
"If the Replacements played Southern rock, they might have sounded something
like Cape Girardeau's Dirty 30's. Teaming with legendary roots producer Eric Ambel,
the band struts and grinds through heavy, twangy rock that's too loud for Americana
and too spontaneous for the typical indie template on its self-titled debut. To
call them a bar band is no slur: They play fast and loose with free-wheeling blues-based
guitar riffs, always a dependable soundtrack for drinking till last call and smoking
up on the way home." - Roy Kasten, River Front Times St. Louis, MO 2006.

A CRACKER! DAVID PICCO Saturday Night, Sunday Morning
Canada's David Picco, rightfully, gets lumped in with Steve Earle, Jay Farrar,
and Jeff Tweedy. His way with melody, lyrics, and Saturday Night, Sunday Morning's
overall sound puts him squarely in that place where Uncle Tupelo ended is all:
Anodyne. Producer by Don Kerr (Ron Sexsmith) captures that place where melancholy
and exuberance meet. Picco's sound might feel derivative of his well accomplished
predecessors, but it is both good company to keep and shows him as an artist with
something to say. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (Mag Wheel) REVIEW

HILL TRANSMISSION An Empty Space
Signal Hill Transmission's third release "An Empty Space" showcases
the band's maturity. While "Tomorrow The Stars" had all of the elements,
but was raw. "An Empty Spaces" shimmers, jangles, rocks, and sounds
finished. There is a slight angst that runs through the record, all wrapped around
sing-along choruses and loud guitars. Fans of the mature Replacements and Fountains

ALERT **Autographed copies while supplies last** ELENI MANDELL Miracle
Of Five On
her sixth album, Eleni Mandell delivers a magnificent, late night, lights-low
set -- her sexiest recording yet. Her conversational alto is set beautifully against
the reeds (Jeff Turmes, who has backed James Harman and Badly Drawn Boy), guitar
(Nels Cline of Wilco), vibes (DJ Bonebrake of X) and her longtime rhythm section
of drummer Kevin Fitzgerald and bassist Ryan Feves. Nowtoronto.com describes Mandell's
releases as "Tastefully produced by Anti label boss Andy Kaulkin, Miracle
Of Five shows off Mandell's gorgeous voice while astutely employing clarinet,
saxophone, harp and vibes in place of guitar. Certain to be a Valentine's Day

sprawling album, deep with musical and lyrical texture. There`s a timeless quality
to this record; its rocking guitar solos and driving rhythms could easily be a
lost gem cut by Crazy Horse between takes with Neil, but it retains the fragile
beauty of much of Sykes` earlier work as well. From lilting to waltzing sway to
hallucinatory psychedelia, this record finds Sykes and her band exploring new

GRIFFIN Children Running Through "...it
is Griffin's voice -- its clear, natural force and her disciplined way with vibrato
-- that hits you first on Children Running Through, in the spare, sultry bravado
of the opening song, "You'll Remember." It is, like many of the songs
here, a good riddance to trouble and those who start it, and the virtually empty
arrangement -- walking bass and brushed drums -- gives Griffin plenty of room
to show off the brassy determination underlining the country-comfort delicacy
of her singing. Some of the sass here is on the outside. Encouraged by snorting
saxes and ash-can drumming, Griffin shows how much blues singer she has in her,
minus the affectations, in "Stay on the Ride." And she's no barn-dance
wallflower in "Getting Ready," which comes with jolts of guitar distortion
and even feedback.... 3 1/2 STARS " -- David Fricke, Rollingstone.com (ATO) MORE

SONDRE LERCHE Phantom
Punch "Norwegian
singer-songwriter Sondre Lerche built a devoted following stateside with a series
of Starbucks-friendly albums that showed a gift for classic-pop melodies and rich,
idiosyncratic guitar-keyboards-strings arrangements. Phantom Punch is a little
different: It rocks amiably, with looser, simpler songs that range from near-punk
to mild guitar-pop. Spunky winners like the title track suggest that Lerche has
absorbed the early work of his tourmate Elvis Costello" -- Christian Hoard,

RICKIE LEE JONES Sermon
On Exposition Boulevard (Ltd) What
will certainly be most striking to some fans about The Sermon On Exposition Boulevard
is that it rocks harder than any album the two-time Grammy Award winner has ever
recorded. "Nobody Knows My Name," the striking opening track, might
best be described as "minimalist pure pop punk rock," and the evocative,
riff-'n'-hook-filled, stream-of-consciousness rant titled "Falling Up"
follows in a similar decidedly art-rock manner. What's ultimately just as fascinating
as the remarkable music on the new album, however, is that all 13 songs are inspired
by the real words and ideas of one Jesus Christ. The Ltd edition package includes
a fold-out Digipak with 14 page booklet (New West Records) MORE

A CRACKER! THE LONESOMES Quick Fixes & Power Trips
Urgency and insurgency are at the root of The Lonesomes` "Quick Fixes &
Power Trips," the Portland quartet`s rocking follow-up to their breezier
2004 debut "Circling The Sun." Bolstered by the addition of lead guitarist
Mark Dybvig (Thrillbilly), The Lonesomes have delivered 12 varied takes on 70s
rock that are both sweet and searing. Literate and character-driven in a way similar
to early Springsteen, the tunes put a modern spin on timeless themes of war, God
and love, at times echoing the disappointment of an American public that feels
duped. The overall sound, though, is much more early Jayhawks and Velvet Crush.
Produced by 44 Long`s Brian Berg (John Doe, Robert Pollard), who lends keyboards
and occasional backing vocals, "Quick Fixes & Power Trips" is an
edgy romp in the vein of Drive-By Truckers and Son Volt, where intimate story-telling
meets heavy guitar licks, fish-hook bass lines and machine-gun drum rolls. (self-released)

What's
Happening Around the MOM Offices | This
week you will read about the return of old friends, the fumbling of the phones,
and coming out of a shell.
LAST
WEEKEND YOUR JESTER AND THE QUEEN visited our friends Dave & Kathleen. Dave's
a music guy. He makes custom guitars for Tom Anderson Guitars. Your Jester is
not a gear guy. My knowledge (barely) starts and end with Telecasters and Les
Paul guitars. I'm told buy those in the culture that Tom Anderson makes a fine
guitar. He also plays around town in a punk band or two totally for giggles at
this point since he's hit the smooth edge of middle age. Most importantly, he
has stacks of LPs. When
we walked in he was playing Exile On Main Street. Your Jester hasn't listened
to Exile for a good five years. Not only was it good to hear an old friend, it
sounded great. I'm not going to start one of those "Vinyl sounds better than
CDs" conversations because it is all in the ear of the beholder. About every
20 minutes Dave would get up, pick something, and off we would go for another
20 minutes. Vintage stuff. Some of it more interesting than others, but an adventure.
Your
Jester has had an old Technics turntable literally sitting in the corner of the
home office for six years. We moved into our current home, I plopped down the
turntable because it wouldn't fit in to the "entertainment" rack and
there it sat. The only good place for it was on another piece furniture and the
cables were too short. With
a burst of enthusiasm Your Jester asked Dave how he got the turntable hooked up
since he too had a space and distance issue. "Oh, I went to Radio Shack and
got longer cables." I felt like I had been smacked on the head with a frying
pan. The most obvious solution and it never occurred to me. After
our evening of old music, cheap wine, and cheaper cigars it was decided that the
turntable needed to be connected. $10 later I had a cable. The ground wire was
rigged so it would reach. In less than an hour The Queen and I were digging though
our boxes of LPs (when we co-mingled our collections nearly 20 years ago I knew
she was keeping me around). The last week has been a walk down memory lane as
well as a rekindling of enthusiasm for many gems we hadn't heard in a decade.
Evidence
in front of us also pointed to how big of REM fans we once were. Lots and lots
and 12" singles, promotional releases, flexi discs. I must say, it is the
most fun we've had for $10 since our last taco adventure. WE'RE
STILL SORTING OUT THE new phone system. Your Jester still does a little fist pump
in celebration when a phone call is successfully transferred. The thrill of that
will wear off soon, but for now I'll take every little victory that moves us closer
to being "normal." DJ
Jeff has surrounded his work area with lots of CDs, old and new. He is really
enjoying talking to customers again. He, too, is again fired up about MOM music.
As we grew as a company and our responsibilities shifted there was less time to
savor music. This ties into the discussion above about vinyl. He's discovered,
as The Queen and I have, that music is better when you can talk about it with
someone. Listening to music was like Oprah's book club, but with less finger sandwiches,
and a little herbal assistance. Now, I guess it is red wine and cigars. A
customer called earlier this week, looking for DJ Jeff because he had been "cut
off." DJ, as it turns out, was hustling through his stacks of CDs while I
the phone with the customer, looking for just the right title to suggest, when
he hung up on the guy. Your Jester has the guy on the phone when I hear his other
phone ring. I asked, "Do you need to get that?" He says, "No, it's
a number I don't recognize." Meanwhile I've IMed DJ Jeff to tell him I've
got his customer on the phone. DJ Jeff IMs back, "I'm calling him right now."
I ask customer Scott if it is an 818 number that's incoming on the other line.
It is. I
proceed to tell him that it is DJ Jeff calling him back. I "hear" him
say ok, taking that as a sign that he's going to grab the other line and hang
up... on him... again. Fortunately, he was very good natured about our fumbling
(plus he was really curious about DJ Jeff's suggestion) so he called back. We
managed to not hang up on him and complete the call. THE
QUEEN ASKED, "WHEN DID YOU BECOME SUCH A TALKER"? She sits next to me
in our cozy office so she hears all of my conversations. Way back when we met
Your Jester was about the most shy guy you would meet. Wallflowers had more to
say at parties than Your Jester. But, bring up the subject of music and I can
barely shut up. Of course, that then leads to the inquisition part of the conversation.
Today, I met Kirk from Northern California who is a retired Highway Patrolmen
who spends his spare time listening to excellent music and building hot rods.
I might not know a blower from a supercharger, but it all sounds so cool. After
all, music is fundamentally about cars and girls, right? Until
next week The
Queen, Your Jester, and DJ Jeff | |
