IT'S A CRACKER! COPPERHEADS Saturday
Night, Sunday Morning
"The Copperheads traverse genres seldom heard these days. "Midway,"
the opening track on their new album, Cold Mississippi, is a Country-Soul paean
to the glories of cruising in a souped-up vehicle on weekend nights. "Psalm
#116" is an exquisitely rendered, B3-organ-propelled Gospel shout-out to
Jesus. "Nashville Girl" owes it's inspiration to the Muscle Shoals sound
it references. What allows it all to work is Ray Barnard's voice, a soulful tenor
that he stretches well into the upper register without ever breaking....."

A CRACKER! KEEGAN DEWITT Keegan Dewitt And The Sparrows
The shuffling country-rock, complete with piano and pedal, makes Keegan Dewitt
sound more like an English pub-rocker than a kid from the Pacific Northwest. Dewitt
enlisted the help of the North Carolina band Roman Candle who produced, engineered
and, most importantly, filled in as his Rumour. North Carolina stalwart Chris
Stamey was so impressed by the record that he volunteered to mix it. Dewitt's
debut showcases a talent for hook-filled intimate storytelling set again a rollicking
backdrop. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (Dual Coast Recording Company) REVIEW

HARRISON Push Me On Home
Mic Harrison & The Highscore bring the fun back into truck driving country.
This album kicks off with the energetic `Mighty Good Wine' and continues down
the party highway. Push Me On Home is a departure from his pop-influenced past.
The High Score bring a muscular country rock sound that compliment Harrison's
whiskey-soaked voice. Together they've created a hard hitting collection of sing-along
drinking songs. Turn it up, head out on the highway, roll down the windows and
sing it out. That way you can join the fun the band is clearly having. -- Jeff

This Cursed House, is an ode to the band`s backwood nature. A stunning mix of
folk and art-pop, the album is, what would seem to be a record of the bands year
long nature hike from Boston, through up-state New York, to Niagara Falls. That
not being the case, This Cursed House is an brilliant collection of the bands
works since its inception in mid-2005, that not only showcases the band`s unique
style of composition, but also its eclectic choices in instrumentation. From two
cellists, to a Glockenspiel/Melodica player, this seven-piece band seems to capture
an entire world of sound apon this record. (Quite Scientific) REVIEW

A CRACKER! THE SPIKEDRIVERS Spikedrivers
This is prototypical Americana music: a stew of bluegrass, country, folk, and
blues, none dominate, all contribute considerably. The same can be said of the
band members. This Columbus, Ohio band`s considerable individual talent give this
release a bit of a schizophrenic feel as they careen through several Americana-related
styles. Jesse Henry`s songwriting and lead-vocals standout among his peers, especially
on The Ballad of John Dillinger, and Like Water. There are enough positives to
recommend this stew above many groups that are doing similar but not nearly as
engaging music. --Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music REVIEW

BUNYAN Lookaftering
It`s not often you come across an artist you can genuinely refer to as a "cult
legend," but Vashti Bunyan is truly that. A full thirty-five years after
her only previous album, the singer returns with a new solo work, her first in
all these years, and it is a breathtakingly beautiful album. Discovered in the
mid-`60s by The Rolling Stones` guru/producer Andrew Loog Oldham and signed to
Decca she recorded a single written by Jagger/ Richards. Reviews touted her as
"the new Marianne Faithfull" or the "female Bob Dylan" although
she claimed to be neither. Lookaftering is anchored around Bunyan`s voice and
picked acoustic guitar, and producer Max Richter`s piano playing and arranging.
Its instrumentation includes a string quartet, oboe, harp, French horn, recorder,
flute, hammer dulcimer, glasses, harmonium, and Rhodes piano, and it features
contributions from Joanna Newsom, Devendra Banhart, Adem, Adam Pierce (Mice Parade),
Robert Kirby (Nick Drake), Otto Hauser and Kevin Barker (Espers, Currituck County).

PAUL ROBESON Portraits
Of The Artist (4pc) DVD All-American
athlete, scholar, renowned baritone, stage actor, and social activist, Paul Robeson
(1898-1976) was a towering figure and a trailblazer many times over. He was perhaps
most groundbreaking, however, in the medium of film. The son of an escaped slave,
Robeson managed to become a top-billed movie star during the time of Jim Crow
America, headlining everything from fellow pioneer Oscar Micheaux's silent drama
Body and Soul to British studio showcases to socially engaged documentaries, always
striving to project positive images of black characters. Increasingly politically
minded, Robeson eventually left movies behind, using his international celebrity
to speak for those denied their civil liberties around the world and ultimately
becoming a victim of ideological persecution himself. But his film legacy lives
on and continues to speak eloquently of the long and difficult journey of a courageous
and outspoken African American. Special featured include: All new, digital transfers
created from the best surviving elements/ Audio commentaries by historians Jeffrey
C. Stewart (The Emperor Jones) and Pearl Bowser (Body and Soul)/ Musical scores
by Wycliffe Gordon (Body and Soul) and Courtney Pine (Borderline)/ 1958 Pacifica
Radio interview with Paul Robeson (Courtesy of Pacifica Radio Archives)/Four new
video programs featuring interviews with actors Ruby Dee and James Earl Jones,
filmmaker William Greaves, cinematographer Tom Hurwitz, film historians Ian Christie
and Stephen Bourne, and Paul Robeson Jr., and including film clips from Song of
Freedom (1936), King Solomon's Mines (1937), and Big Fella (1938)/PLUS: A book

What's
Happening Around the MOM Offices | This
week you will read about the coming of spring, more turntable madness, and an
ongoing discussion of taste.
YOUR
JESTER AND DJ JEFF ARE GEEKING HARD. Hope springs eternal. In eight days baseball's
spring training camps open. As DJ Jeff says, "It is the REAL start of spring."
All teams start with a clean slate and the hopes of a spectacular season. While
the truth might be that the top performers and bottom performers are all but pre-ordained
even before camp opens, there is always that hope for a miracle. In 2004 the Red
Sox broke an 86 year old curse (baseball is very superstitious) and won the World
Series. That, my friends, is a recent history miracle. Not some "miracle"
year that your hazy old grampa tells you about from back in the days when he had
to watch the games through a knothole in the fence. This is so recent that you
probably have pairs of socks in your drawer that are older than the Sox World
Series win.
Over
the course of the season I'll be sure to bore you with details of both the Dodgers
and Orioles. Well, it will likely be sad stories about the Orioles because, on
paper, they don't look so good. But, hope springs eternal, right? Miracles happen,
right? The Dodgers, though, look strong and deep (two positives when evaluating
a team's chances). Let the stretching begin... in eight days.
THE
LOVE AFFAIR WITH the turntable continues. The Queen has been pulling out Your
Jester's Japanese and import pressings of albums by The Band, The Beatles, and
Love. Not to sound too "Big Chill" but that familiar music filling the
house does bring back memories of a very different time in our lives. For those
of you newer to this missive The Queen and Your Jester met working in an independent
record store many, many... many years ago. Since The Queen still looks like the
blushing bride I married 15 years ago, Your Jester must be getting all of the
wrinkles and age spots. Back then, though, life was so different. Music was the
most important thing. Well, music and figuring out how to not screw up a blossoming
relationship with my future wife.
The
whole period is captured in our joint custody LP collection. My love for early
Rod Stewart records. Her love for Free To Be, You and Me. It is like we opened
a time capsule. The amazing part is how pristine we managed to keep the LPs. All
other aspects of our life are paint spattered, papers piled, CDs stacked in every
nook and cranny. But the LPs are all clean and neatly sleeved. We can't wait to
start hitting some of the local record stores.
A
REGULAR FROM TEXAS called today, wanting to trade back one of our "Cracker"
CDs. Your Jester is totally ok with that because that's the deal. We want folks
to experiment. Mind you, he's a regular so I wouldn't do this to just anyone,
but when he told me which record he wanted to return I feigned insult because
I really like the record. At first, he got a bit defensive and then realized I
was just screwing around with him.
Back
in the days of working at the independent record store (Moby Disc for those of
you who may have been around LA in the '80s) Your Jester judged people on their
musical taste. If you were an REM fan, you were cool. If you were more the Spandau
Ballet or Depeche Mode type then not so cool. 20-odd years later Your Jester has
found a little more room in that area for other tastes. But, for a brief flash
it was awfully fun to give the regular a little grief.
Until
next week
