It's A Cracker !

IT'S A CRACKER!! THE BEST OF THE BANDS YOU'VE NEVER HEARD!

CRACKERS ! (Buy it, you'll like it. Or we'll take it back. Only those with "It's A Cracker!!" above the title.)

IT'S A CRACKER!
BOB EGAN
The Glorious Decline
"For his third solo outing The Glorigous Decline, Egan teams up with another artist more used to the shadow than the spotlight: Weakerthans drummer Jason Tait. And a fine match it is. Tait holds down the fort with his usual tastefully understated touch -- and tosses in vibes, harmonium and saw to sweeten the pot -- while Egan deftly layers on the guitar, mandolin, steel and other strings. Together, they spin nine elegantly unvarnished, atmospheric slow-burners whose shimmery melodies and twangy licks are offset by gruff, woodburned vocals that cross Knopfler and Cohen. Call it a Glorious Duet. SUN RATING 3.5 STARS OUT OF 5 -- Darryl Sterdan, Winnipeg Sun (Fontana/Universal
Canada)

IT'S A CRACKER!
THE WELLS
The Outcast Will Make A Strong Nation
There are worse things in the world than to be favorably compared to Bruce Springsteen's Pete Seeger tribute We Shall Overcome. Let's jump right ahead and make the comparison. Robert Loss's lead vocals and this Columbus-based band have channeled a loose, rollicking folk, blues and roots-rock sound that is immediately accessible and foot-stomping. Where other bands choose to brood, The Wells kick out the jams as they chase the devil. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music

DOLOREAN
You Cant Win
After 2003's Not Exotic and 2005's Violence in the Snowy Fields, Dolorean became an underdog favorite with national critics, writers, and a loyal following of fans. Now, with You Can't Win, their third Yep Roc release, Dolorean delivers another collection of melancholy and stunningly beautiful folk pop songs. Singer Al James completed the eleven new songs here after Dolorean's 2005 European tour, and before long, the band performed the set live at two gigs within two weeks at one bar in their hometown of Portland, OR. After these two brief outings, James and cohorts promptly went into the studio and recorded all the basic tracks in one weekend. Cinematic and haunting in their imagery, the songs on You Can't Win - from the spooky opening percussion on the title track to the closing notes of "My Still Life" - confirm the critical accolades.(Yep Roc)

TOMMY WOMACK
There I Said It
It's been four years since Tommy Womack's last solo release, which was also the year he suffered a nervous breakdown and after twenty-some years of performing had to re-enter the 8-5 work force. The street smart, literate post punk rocker/songwriter thought he was out of the music business and the business was through with him. However, the songs did not give up on Tommy Womack and he has returned with the career-defining record, There, I Said It.What began as a catharsis for the discerning songwriter, resulted in the personal There, I Said It!. Produced by John Deaderick, (keyboard playing and producer known for his work with The Dixie Chicks and Patty Griffin), the songs deal almost exclusively with the intersection of family responsibility and the ups and downs of a life making music. Tommy's wit and wryness are now balanced with an heartbreaking honesty of life's small, good and perfect things and yet many of the songs are still wrapped in the spirit and take risk attitude of the best in rock 'n roll. The new songs still hook the listener with rhyme and his psycoactive mix of Dave Davies and Hubert Sumlin guitar playing, but Tommy's heart of gold has been laid bare.(Cedar Creek Music)

SOUTHERN CULTURE ON THE SKIDS
Countrypolitan Favorites
With Countrypolitan Favorites, SCOTS (Southern Culture On The Skids) are giving us a glimpse into their private record collections by compiling 15 one of a kind covers, recorded at singer Rick Miller's Kudzu Ranch recording studio. From Mary Huff's sultry take on "Funnel of Love" (made famous by Wanda Jackson), to Miller's version of the Don Gibson classic, "Oh Lonesome Me," and their swingers-on-the-rocks duet, "Let's Invite Them Over" (an Onie Wheeler original), SCOTS have recorded what might be the definitive countrypolitan soundtrack to a life lived on the skids.(Yep Roc)

SILOS

Come On Like The Fast Lane
On Come On Like The Fast Lane, recorded in Phillip Glass's Looking Glass Studios, The Silos put their power-trio to the test. The band employs layered guitars to add depth and transcendence to the album's introspective tracks, switching to ferocious, hook-laden rock to part the clouds and land back on terra firma. It's this ability to draw on an inexhaustible well of emotions with turn-on-a-dime transitions that sets The Silos apart; naked honesty and joyous melodies never sounded so good together. Darryl Smyers from the Dallas Observer calls Come On Like The Fast Lane "...the band's best effort as a trio…proof positive that even (obscure) alt-country legends can age gracefully and continue to be relevant." (Bloodshot Records)

REVIVAL

Horses Of War
Josh Read and Evan Berodt (ex-Canyon) bring on the heavy. Read's tales of shipwrecks, lost friends, broken hearts... if there is a downer subject, Read covers it. His vocals have an intensity that Coldplay's Chris Martin could only dream. This is a roots-pop, psychedelic Crazy Horse-influenced rampage through darkness. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (Gypsy Eyes Records)

CHARLIE LOUVIN

Charlie Louvin
"On his umpteenth album, seventy-nine-year-old Country Music Hall of Famer Louvin turns out highly likable collabos with people such as Elvis Costello, Jeff Tweedy and Will Oldham. Well-penned and dustily tuneful, the songs -- many of them older than the guest stars -- benefit from some extra spice: Dig the dissonance between Louvin's crusty drawl and the nasal come-ons of Eef Barzalay on "The Christian Life." --Christian Hoard, rollingstone.com (Tomkins Square)

CHIP TAYLOR
This Side Of Big River
Though he first won fame in the '60s penning hits like 'Wild Thing' and 'Angel in the Morning', by the '70s Chip Taylor was recording country albums for Warner Brothers, of which this is his third and last. A big hit in Europe, and a favorite of Johnny Cash (whose 'Big River' is the only cover on the record), the album didn't make much of a mark over here, but remains a cult classic. Track Listings:The Side Of Big River/Same Ol' Story/Holding Me Together/Gettin' Older, Lookin' Back/John Tucker's On The Wagon Again/Big River/May God Be With Me/Circle Of Tears/Sleepy Eyes/I've Been Tied/You're Alright, Charlie. ELVIS PERKINS
Ash Wenesday
On his debut, Perkins combines emotional intimacy with a warm-hearted studio sound that recalls Nick Drake and "Astral Weeks"-era Van Morrison. Compelling, dreamlike songs with lyrics that teeter between the specific and the surreal. "We were sold on the spot - fuss-worthy folkies just don't come easy...double bass, harmonica, and strings color these lyrical laments, but the man's easy melodicism is the real charm" - Stereogum. CHICKEN LEGS WEAVER

Nowhere
"Weaver's spiritual roots may lie in the Mississippi swamps of his Delta heroes, but this powerful debut updates the themes of fire and brimstone and devil-dealing with ballsy grooves and song structures that ditch the 12-bar format in favour of a 21st century blend of garage blues, gospel and punk. The slippery slide of Desert Rose and the dreamy arpeggios of Howlin Road capture Weaver's subtle range of guitar textures, but it¹s his apocalyptic vocals that steal the show with ominous strains of Son House, Howlin' Wolf, Tom Waits and Johnny Cash. Atmospherically produced by Johnny Dowd, this is soul-searching contemporary blues from the wrong side of the tracks, as convincing as the Black Keys, Blues Explosion and White Stripes." -- Dominic Pedler, Guitar Techniques (Riverside Records)

What's Happening Around the MOM Offices

This week you will read about home-town favorites, and the continuing bumpy ride.

AS IS POLICY, BUSINESS AT THE TOP. The wrinkles -- ok, crumples, wads --in our transition are now smoothing out. Stock is getting, uh, stocked. Back orders are almost caught up. As Your Jester said to DJ Jeff earlier today, I've felt more like Sherlock Holmes than a record industry weasel. Given the choice between plowing through a bag of new music or squinting at a spreadsheet, I'll take the music.

However, the issues are being attacked. Poor DJ Jeff is barely getting time to talk about his soon-to-be-woeful Orioles as he is spending so much time on search and recovery missions. We don't want your pity, we want your business both now and in the future. Thanks for your continuing participation in this process (whether you like it or not.)

YOUR JESTER'S CONSIGLIORE is a devoted Dallas Cowboys fan. I can't blame him for that as he was deprived as a child. Being born in Topeka, KS is a lot for anyone to overcome so I can't blame him for his poor choice in football teams. At least, though, the Cowboys are, relatively, geographically in the same area. He's also a New York Yankees fan which A) is an almost unforgivable offense and B) they aren't anywhere near Topeka, Dallas, or his current location of Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The Queen and Your Jester have a friend in London who has been patiently explaining the virtues of soccer, or the sport that the rest of the world calls football. I never grew up with the game and, on its surface, it looks incredibly boring. I say this as a devoted baseball fan that suffers from the same perception by those that don't understand the game.

Lots of questions have been asked over the last couple of years as I watched matches. As part of the bonding experience I've become a fan of Arsenal. I don't know of historical neighborhood rivalries, overcoming the odds or disappointing losses. I don't even much care for Arsenal's jersey, but they are the team I'm watching.

This subject has come up with several overseas customers. To a man, they are all Manchester United fans. These are folks in South Africa, Australia, and even Liverpool. From my conversations with my friend Sherman, the Arsenal fan, Manchester United is the equivalent of the New York Yankees (or the other way around if you prefer to not use the American-centric view of things). They have fans everywhere. Your Jester says that is reason enough to dislike them!

My friend Craig in South Africa, when told of my nascent allegiance to Arsenal, said anyone wearing that jersey on match day would earn a trip into a dark closet with Celine Dion's music blasting as punishment. A ruthless bunch of football fans!

What Your Jester has discovered is there is a certain fun in tormenting Manchester United fans, even if they are currently residing at the top of the Premiership. It's just like being a snobby music fan, but global!

Until next week

The Queen, Your Jester, and DJ Jeff
