KATHLEEN EDWARDS
Asking For Flowers
Kathleen Edwards` Asking for Flowers is her first new album in three years, and the acclaimed artist`s most penetrating collection to date. The album features eleven new songs, all written by Edwards, and finds her performing at the peak of her creative powers, supported by a group of master backing musicians. Flowers tells indelible, clear-eyed stories of hope and resignation, humor and death, unconditional love and brazen inequality. Co-produced by Edwards and Jim Scott (Tom Petty, Whiskeytown), the album features, among others, keyboardist Benmont Tench from The Heartbreakers, drummer Don Heffington (Bob Dylan, The Wallflowers), bassist Bob Glaub (Jackson Browne, Warren Zevon, Leonard Cohen), guitarist Colin Cripps (Sarah McLachlan, Bryan Adams), and pedal steel ace Greg Leisz (Sheryl Crow, Wilco, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss). FELICE BROTHERS

Felice Brothers
The Felice Brothers' self-titled American debut is a collection of songs originally recorded to sell to make ends meet on the streets of New York. The band made these "field recordings" wherever they could: an abandoned cafeteria, a broken down school bus, a chicken coop, a derailed train, and under a bridge. In these tales of murder, pathos, lust, and love, you'll find an honest new brand of American storytelling and song. "Scruffy and scratched Americana that recalls Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, and early Springsteen" - Time Out London. "The Felice Brothers' Catskills folk is rough around the edges and intoxicating. Ryan Adams, eat your heart out" - Metroland / Best Of 2007. "Backwoods Americana is all the rage, but this band of brothers is a cut above the rest" - The Sun UK (4 stars).

WHISKEYTOWN

Strangers Almanac (Deluxe)
"Whiskeytown's first major-label release, 1997's Stranger's Almanac, brought a lot of critical attention, particularly to the band's young singer and songwriter Ryan Adams. His world-weary drawl is pervasive throughout the album, with an honesty that belies his age (Adams was 22 at the time of recording, but many of the songs were written well before then). Credit must also be given to violinist and vocalist Caitlin Cary, whose good old-time fiddle sings above the rest of the band's crash and swagger, and whose vocal harmonies help to soothe Adams' gritty yowls and croons. The radio single "16 Days" is one of the stronger tracks, starting forlorn but quickly accelerating through the chorus, and "Everything I Do" pulls in some understated Hammond B-3 organ and a Memphis-style horn section. ...Overall, Stranger's Almanac is a good listen and a fine introduction to both the band's brash muscle and Adams' bitterly tender songcraft." - Zac Johnson, All Music Guide. CAROLINE HERRING
Lantana
In many ways Lantana is Herring's re-imaging of the Gothic South, with a rich alto voice that soothes the listener even as she addresses difficult subjects. Herring has a journalist's eye for detail, a poet's sense of scale and language, and a life-long Southerner's understanding of the issues that shape the culture below the Mason- Dixon line. Herring tackles poignant themes of womanhood in "Fair and Tender Ladies", "Stone Cold World" and "Song For Fay." Herring also expertly throws her hat in the ring of the long-standing murder ballad tradition, this time representing Susan Smith in the song "Paper Gown." Herring's commitment to uncovering the truth in her songs led fellow artist Dar Williams to call Herring "the elusive real thing." There is no artifice on Lantana. It's an album full of delights, lyrically and musically. And just like Caroline Herring, her new album is the real thing. (Signature Sounds)

WACO BROTHERS

Waco Express: Live & Kickin At Schubas Tavern
Full of shout-along manifestos and strident tomfoolery from each of their seven studio albums, "Waco Express" lives up to the mandate given to the mastering engineer to "err on the side of massive and fierce and overwhelming." Critical darlings since their unleashing, featuring a scribe-ready lineup of members from the Mekons, Jesus Jones, Wreck and others, as well as a genre-bending fearlessness, The Waco Brothers have always saved their best for the stage. The live shows are events of genuine reverence for their leave-it-all-out-there-this-should-be-fun convictions. (Bloodshot)

MARK PICKEREL
Cody's Dream
Inspired by a solitary trip through the South without a working car radio and only his own thoughts to keep him company, Mark Pickerel’s second album for Bloodshot, Cody’s Dream, is a Steinbeckian odyssey through modern America; a tale of thruways and the characters that occupy them. The result: 13 dusty gems flirting with the static-y ghosts of Motown, Tin Pan Alley, classic pop, and soul; dancing across the radio spectrum like a trail of mileposts in the rearview. (Bloodshot)

WAIFS
Sundirtwater
Sun Dirt Water is an album born of time and distance. The geographic space between singer-songwriters Donna Simpson, Vikki Thorn and Josh Cunningham, and the long hiatus since their last studio triumph, Up All Night, created a kind of vacuum that these new songs could hardly wait to fill. From the darkly evocative storytelling of Donna's "Vermillion" and "Sad Sailor Song" to Josh's upbeat country spiritual Eternity, this sense of liberation runs an exquisitely loose thread through the Waifs' fifth album... The eerie introspection of "Love Let Me Down," the gleeful, organ-fuelled pop of Stay, the electric riff rock of "No Such Thing As Goodbye" and the old-time ukulele thrum of Sentimental are worlds apart stylistically, but they spring from the same well of timeless roots influences and an instinct for collaborative expression that only comes with years traveling the same road.

JIM WHITE
Transnormal Skiperoo
Jim White traveled many a junkyard road to get to "Transnormal Skiperoo". Now living in an old farmhouse in the backwoods of Georgia, Jim White may have finally reached a place called home, but his other search, for what he calls 'the gold tooth in God's crooked smile' continues in this new set of backyard tales. "Transnormal Skiperoo" was produced by Joe Pernice and Michael Deming, recorded with the band Ollabelle, and also features tracks with Tucker Martine and Laura Veirs, local Georgia legend Don Chambers & Goat, bluegrass duo Jeff & Vida and percussionist Mauro Refosco. PAUL THORN
Long Way From Tupelo
"The real deal comes along infrequently these days, but Paul Thorn qualifies. A throwback to an earlier era of classic rock, he is Springsteen from Mississippi, Bob Seger singing with Lynyrd Skynyrd, Kris Kristofferson backed by the Stones. On his fifth album, "A Long Way From Tupelo," songwriter Thorn announces himself as a major talent demanding recognition. Steeped in the kind of Southern soul that always informs the greatest rock, Thorn`s style of guitar-driven, crunching rock hasn`t been heard in these parts for 20 years or more." -- Joel Selvin. CARLENE CARTER
Stronger
Inspired by her life experiences, Stronger is a raw but touching recollection of her life of the past few years. Years that included the wrenching sorrow of the sudden death of her stepfather, mother, sister and ex-lover. Also in that same year she experienced the euphoria of meeting and falling in love with the cowboy of her dreams. On her latest work Stronger, her family musical legacy continues. Carlene started the pre-production with her brother John Carter Cash in 2006 in anticipation of an upcoming European tour. After performing the songs live, Carlene decided she wanted to step up the songs' production and turned to her old friend and former bandmember, John McFee of Doobie Brothers and Southern Pacific fame. Her recent emotional peaks and valleys have also inspired Carlene to write the bulk of the material on Stronger, making for her most honest, real and moving work to date. (Yep Roc)

GUTTER TWINS
Saturnalia
The first album from the collaboration forged in late 2003 by Mark Lanegan and fellow maverick singer-songwriter Greg Dulli. "Saturnalia" finds the Dulli nicknamed "Satanic Everly Brothers" going even deeper into the shadows than ever before. It proves rootsy but baroque, handmade yet modernist, teeming with siren melodies that don't resolve. The cumulative effect proves internal yet epic: the netherworld symphonics of Mogwai, Sigur Ros, and Bohren und der Club of Gore are touchstones, alongside the sprawling emotions of Pink Floyd, the melodically catchy paranoia of the Beach Boys, the primal confessionals of John Lennon. Still, what Dulli and Lanegan achieve ultimately feels like the determinedly individual product of two auteurs coming together. (Sub Pop)

BLACK CROWES
Warpaint
"Warpaint is the first studio album from the Black Crowes in seven years — not that you can really tell. The Crowes still bang out that old-school boogie that might be three or four decades old if it wasn't brand-new.. If the Crowes are derivative, they wear that tag with pride; it's exactly what their fans love about them... On Warpaint, the driving force is the blues. These eleven songs largely come from a place that's darker and more hard-fought. The mood runs through the fire-and-brimstone of "Walk Believer Walk" and the dead-end setting of "Locust Street." ...Throughout the album, Robinson tells tales of loss and regret. Yet Robinson counters each lament with a reminder that his life was saved by rock & roll. Most of the rough patches, though, are forgivable, because the band sounds damn good. The Crowes may have gone through so many lineup changes that their Wikipedia page has a color-coded chronological chart, but they wound up with a winning hand. The key addition is Luther Dickinson of the North Mississippi Allstars, whose slashing slide work contributes tension and intricacy all over the album. The Black Crowes have fallen out, broken up and been written off as washed-up... But with Warpaint, for the first time in a long time, the Black Crowes seem like a band with a future." -- Alan Light, Rolling Stone

CHATHAM COUNTY LINE
IV
New traditionalists Chatham County Line are back with their most ambitious album to date. The North Carolina quartet's fourth album IV, is a boozy blend of Americana and loose acoustic rockers that exhibits the band's ever-evolving style. CCL continues their dedication to traditional instruments by using their love for bluegrass as a base on which to layer an eclectic blend of roots music. Bluegrass workouts like "The Carolinian" stand beside pop geared numbers such as "Chip of a Star" and the hard soul of "Birmingham Jail." The progression seen on IV is helped along by indie pop musician and producer Chris Stamey (Yo La Tengo, Alex Chilton, Alejandro Escovedo), making for a starkly heartfelt testament to making the past new again. But the weather, lights, cars and people, they're never quite the same." According to ROlling Stone, "The band is heavily influenced by pulp art, especially the writings of sci-fi author Michael Moorcock." "I haven't turned my back on my lessons in punk, even in this stuff," says Miller, "We keep hitting you, but not just with bombast."

EDDY THE CHIEF CLEARWATER
West Side Strut
West Side Strut is a typically energetic Eddy Clearwater mix of edgy West Side blues and fiery old school rock. The record gets a contemporary spark from producer Ronnie Baker Brooks (son of Chicago blues icon Lonnie Brooks), who also lays down some sparkling guitar work. Featured guests include Lonnie Brooks and fellow Chicago blues and soul legends Jimmy Johnson and Otis Clay. The star of the disc is definitely Eddy, though, as his stinging guitar playing and rough-hewn vocals lead the way. (Alligator)

BLACK 47
Iraq
"... [Iraq] is a clear-eyed look at the war through the eyes of American soldiers, and it’s based on the firsthand impressions and recollection of Black 47 fans who have gone to war and kept in touch.... as the war and the contacts went on, "... we decided to buckle down and write a full album. . . . There’s nothing really cohesive written from the point of view of the troops over there." While Kirwan is foursquare against the war, he says that the military fans of the band run the range, and many viewpoints are represented on the album... "I tried to deal with it from their point of view, which is non-ideological -- just trying to do a job," Kirwan said." -- Providence Journal

TIBBY EDWARDS
Play It Cool Man Play It Cool: Gonna Shake This

IT'S A CRACKER!

PSYCHEDELIC COWBOYS
Jangle Waltz
The band name doesn`t lie. The Psychedelic Cowboys are fine practitioners of the rare art of Cosmic American Music. John Lefty Harlan`s laid-back nasally vocals provide a hint of a pharma-induced state. Citing The Byrds, Beatles, Love, The Leaves, and Hearts and Flowers as influences, the Psychedelic Cowboys weave musical magic track after track. Seven years after "Tragic Songs and Hop-A-Longs" was released seems like a long time to wait for the follow-up. It will seem worth every minute after hearing the groovy sounds of Jangle Waltz. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (Taxim)

NO RIVER CITY
Wolves And Fishes
If it is possible to be overly effusive and still fall short of exclaiming the virtues of an album, let this be that moment. No River City combine a Gram Parsons & Flying Burrito Brothers honky tonk sound, simple and interesting story telling and excellent musicianship. This album has the feel of southern California country rock from the early `70s without smelling musty. Drew de Man might be the best musician that no one has yet heard of, every bit the equal to Ryan Adams. Is that effusive enough? This album is great. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (self-released)

IT'S A CRACKER!

NO RIVER CITY
This Is Our North Dakota
Atlanta guitarist-songwriter Drew de Man and his partner, cellist-keyboardist Terri Onstad, compose queasy love stories and pensive heartbreakers that marry country to darker indie rock. There's a pop churn to the melancholy folk tunes on this debut full-length, emphatically told by Drew's urgent lead vocals, Terri's earnest harmonies and her invigorating cello lines. The Village Voice's Andrew Aber calls them "a wonderful duo that through harmonies, slick instrumental and great songwriting skills pull off everything that's right about the new country genre that shuns cowboy hats and beer guzzling for a roots return to true American folk music." J.B. BEVERLEY AND THE WAYWARD DRIFTERS
Dark Bar and A Jukebox
This is hardcore honky-tonk with a little bad-ass bluegrass and folk thrown in for good measure. Sportin' a rebel streak as long as the bar, J.B. Beverley writes classic material befitting of his rough-hewn, throaty drawl. He's channeling Jimmie Rodgers and Hank Williams here and kicking out the jam in the process. The title song has a great line that sums up Beverley, the band, the whole enchilada, just perfectly: "Give me a dark bar and a jukebox over that radio. Toby just don't cut it. Give me Haggard, give me Coe. I'm tired of watching Nashville and its washed up fashion show. Because you won't find no 'country' on 'country radio.'" For that song alone it's worth it. It's worth it no matter how you slice it. Sweetening the deal, Ronnie McCoury blasts out a couple of ripping mandolin solos on two tracks. -- Robinson, Miles Of Music (Helltrain Records)

HISTORY CHANNEL: 1968 WITH TOM BROKAW

1968 was a year of extraordinary tragedy, triumph, and transformation. The assassinations of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy failed to halt the juggernaut of the Civil Rights Movement. From music to politics to issues of feminism, race, and war, 1968 left almost no facet of American life unchanged. Now, legendary award-winning journalist and best-selling author Tom Brokaw commemorates the revolutionary events of this pivotal year in a feature-length special, based on his book, Boom!: Voices of the Sixties Personal Reflections on the '60s and Today. Drawing upon his decades of experience, Brokaw revisits the scenes of these iconic events, pairing provocative voices from the past and present to explore how these 40-year-old moments still impact our lives today. BODEANS
Still (DUE 03.18.08)
"Aside from the usual genre stand-bys like jangly fuzz guitar and complimentary vocal harmonies, the BoDeans can usually be counted on to douse their music with loads of twang, endearing them just as much to the alt.country contingent. Thus, just like many prior BoDeans records, Still is equal parts A Hard Day's Night and "Hotel California." What's here is mainly solid, occasionally sublime, but never quite spectacular. Listening to Still, I felt much the same as I had listening to the Gin Blossoms' comeback record. Both are simply solid, unassuming, and unpretentious sets of songs, not designed for an artistic renaissance or a strong charge back up the charts, but rather for the purpose of feeding a fan base hungry for new material and adding new songs to the set lists that are heavily reliant on the band's established formula. It won't make terribly many critics' album of the year lists, but those who go to the extra effort to seek Still, hardcore BoDeans fans and power pop connoisseurs alike, will be well-satisfied." -- Anthony Saggese, Stereosubversion.com. The album was produced by the legendary T-Bone Burnett and features 12 new tracks. Track Listing: Pretty Ghost / Round Here Somewhere / Willing / Lucille / The First Time / Every Day / Waste A Lifetime / Breathe / Wonder Wonder / Hearing / Found Me A Reason / Arms

SERA CAHOONE
Only As The Day Is Long (DUE 03.18.08)
Seattle's The Stranger wrote of Only, "...a breathtaking collection of sad and dusky songs that reveal an artist of remarkable depth as well as a truly stunning voice." Despite being an accomplished guitarist and songwriter, Sera preferred to stay behind the drum kit (drumming for the likes of Carissa's Wierd, LA musician Patrick Park, and on the Band Of Horses' debut, "Everything All The Time") until one tour across the US with Park in 2006. She found herself inspired by the landscape and she wrote an album in her thoughts as they drove along the blue highways and back roads of the expansive west and the plains. (Sub Pop)

DESTROYER
Trouble In Dreams (DUE 03.18.08)
This release cements Vancouver, BC's Dan Bejar as an artist as quirky and enigmatic as David Bowie, as symphonic and grandiose as Scott Walker, and as quixotically literary as Bob Dylan. A collection of songs that is fresh and confounding, yet befitting the Destroyer canon. "Of all contemporary songwriters, he's been the biggest influence and inspiration. Because he is pretentious, but in a way that makes it into a game where we all get to pretend to be so grand" - Okkervil River's Will Sheff. (Merge)

DEVOTCHKA
Mad & Faithful Telling (DUE 03.18.08)
This four-piece multi-instrumental outfit fuses gypsy, Greek, Slavic, and mariachi with American punk and folk roots. Directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris chose DeVotchKa to score "Little Miss Sunshine" in 2006, the breakout indie film of the year, garnering four Academy Award nominations and earning DeVotchKa a Grammy nod for Best Soundtrack. Their stage set up is fortified by sousaphone, accordion, piano, violin, a bouzouki, upright bass, percussion, trumpet, drums, and a Theramin. The band has toured with similar maverick acts such as Calexico and Flogging Molly and will also appeal to fans of Arcade Fire, Neko Case, and David Byrne. (Anti-)

ADAM GREEN
Sixes & Sevens (DUE 03.18.08)
Green is formerly one half of Moldy Peaches (with Kimya Dawson). This is his fifth solo album. His music is reminiscent of Bacharach and Brel, and he's created his own brand of playful pop while refining it with each release. He's toured with the likes of The Libertines, Badly Drawn Boy, Ben Kweller, and The Strokes. "A queasy mix of super-sharp realism, clammy surrealism, and elegant melody" - Mojo. "It always amazes me how he can express such deep meaning with such twisted humor. Adam is eccentric and down to earth, with newfound technical proficiency over a wider spectrum of styles. I love it" - Julian Casablancas, The Strokes.

What's Happening Around the MOM Offices

This week you will read about rocking it old school. and bereavement.

"I DON'T MEAN TO BOTHER YOU, but I see you are rockin' it old school. Is that a CD Walkmen?" The Queen was taking a brisk walk around the neighborhood, headphones on, listening to the new Kathleen Edwards.

Every area has the anonymous walkers. The person you always see walking, heading somewhere. You see them on your block, on the block over. around the corner. This person is walking with purpose, seemingly at all hours. Mostly, with anonymity. He's one of those regulars you wave to, but never learn the name of until the day you are moving out of the neighborhood.

She was out power walking, working up a sweat, working off some stress when the gray-haired mustached dude motioned to her. The Queen related to Your Jester, "I didn't know what he wanted." It was more than a wave. It was.... a gesture. She stopped, took off the ear phones (the kids call them "ear buds," because they look like little flower buds.. isn't the cute) and had something resembling a conversation.

Him: "Sorry to bother you but I couldn't help but notice you are rockin' it old school with the Walkmen."

Queen thinks to herself, "Who talks like that? Oh, right, the crazy walking guy"

Queen: Yeah, my iPod fried.

Him: "It's cool. It is so old school."

Queen thinks to herself, "Didn't that phrase go out of style a decade ago? I forgot, I'm in the suburbs. It takes a couple of years before the 'Hip Lingo" will get to the valley."

Queen: "My cassette Walkman is in the shop."

Him, completely missing the sarcasm: "Really?"

Queen: "I have to replace the iPod. The thing was only a year old or so and the battery died. But since I only use it when I go for walks, which I haven't been doing too often lately, I don't really need an iPod."

Him: "Yeah, I never see you out here anymore."

Queen thinks to herself, "He noticed me? Am I the creepy walking woman? Do other neighbors think I'm the creepy walking woman?"

Queen: "Yeah, I've been working and painting."

Queen thinks to herself, "Why did I tell him that I've been painting? I don't even know his name. He has no idea I'm a painter. All this is going to do is prolong the agony of this conversation."

Him: "Well, have fun walking. I love the Walkmen."

Off the two went in their separate directions.

Nobody uses a CD Walkmen anymore? How about boom boxes? We've got four portable CD players around the office. They all get used and abused. In fact, it annoys The Tree Commissioner endlessly when he finds Your Jester's boombox with the "mega-bass" turned on. Your Jester really doesn't turn it on just to annoy the Tree Commissioner, but it is a plus.

For those of you that have never met The Queen, she absolutely rocks it in her own unconventional way. That's a big part of her charm. I'm not sure I would call it "old school" but her Chuck Taylors, strange t-shirts, and tattoos give her a look that is all her own.

THE FIVE STAGES OF GRIEF are Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, and Acceptance. No Depression's impending demise caused longtime readers of the mag to quickly cycle through the stages. The strange part was the development of step six: recriminations. Several of our regulars expressed anger that the magazine had to make compromises over the last several years in an effort to reach a larger audience. Your Jester has no idea what kind of decisions took place in the granola-y back offices of No Depression. Fans of the mag, though, are convinced that forces outside of covering alt.country (whatever that is) were at work.

As an observer, alt.country suffered from the same fate as other musical movements that never gained mainstream footing. The buzz starts, the press jumps on board. Sales and money never reaches the lofty prognostications, and the press gleefully dance on the grave of the failed endeavor.

No Depression was the most public face for the music, obviously. They were the experts. While Your Jester will admit to envy of the attention they always received from labels and publicists, they were also held to a higher standard. Every decision was judged. If they pushed their narrow boundaries by, for goodness sake, giving favorable coverage to a mainstream act they townsfolk showed up with pitchforks and torches. No, it wasn't that bad. There was, though, an unwritten contract with the readers.

The faithful were devoted like a rescue mutt. We found a home, a community, a commonality. Part of that is going away. The danger (and, possibly, an inevitability) is fans drifting away because there central meeting place is gone.

I have no easy solution about where to go to find out about the best music you've never heard of. Besides No Depression I read Rolling Stone (it is a drug I can't quit), Uncut, Paste, Harp, Country Standard Time, and the music columns in Esquire, The New York Times, Los Angeles Times.... and that list goes on because I haven't touched on the music blogs I regularly peruse.

In short, the information is still out there, it will just not conveniently arrive in your mailbox every eight weeks.

Until next week

Your Jester, The Mangling Tree Commissioner, The Queen, Satchel, Merle, Miles, and Nuke The Attack Turtle
