KINGSIZEMAYBE
Kingsizemaybe
Gary Eaton (founding member of the Continental Drifters) debuts his stellar new band on their self-titled release. Eaton's songwriting has been heralded throughout his career and even landed him a slot with the Drifters opening for Bob Dylan. Kingsizemaybe showcases Eaton's knack for writing hook-laden tunes with a story that grabs your attention right out of the gate. Fans of The Band, Crazy Horse and The Rolling Stones will appreciate the way Kingsizemaybe mix just the right amount of garage into their country. With four voices in the band, their sweet harmonies would do Manuel and Danko proud. (Brewery)

CHATHAM COUNTY LINE
IV
New traditionalists Chatham County Line are back with their most ambitious album to date. The North Carolina quartet's fourth album IV, is a boozy blend of Americana and loose acoustic rockers that exhibits the band's ever-evolving style. CCL continues their dedication to traditional instruments by using their love for bluegrass as a base on which to layer an eclectic blend of roots music. Bluegrass workouts like "The Carolinian" stand beside pop geared numbers such as "Chip of a Star" and the hard soul of "Birmingham Jail." The progression seen on IV is helped along by indie pop musician and producer Chris Stamey (Yo La Tengo, Alex Chilton, Alejandro Escovedo), making for a starkly heartfelt testament to making the past new again. VAN MORRISON
Keep It Simple
2008 sees the release of Keep It Simple, the 35th album which Van Morrison has produced himself. Morrison's first new album of new material since 2005, and the first in several years in which he penned all 11 songs specifically for one album. On this new record, Morrison honours all his varied influences - jazz, folk, blues, Ulster Scots, country, soul and gospel (even making uniquely innovative use of the mighty ukulele) - at times melding them all together at once in his own signature sound. Keep It Simple does not boast the big horns or string arrangements of some of Morrison's previous work. What it does feature are gorgeous songs rich with emotion, depth and beauty. Van has journeyed far and wide since his early days in Belfast but inevitably, the man Bob Geldof called "the one true genius in Irish music" has invariably come back to the philosophy summed up in the title of his new record. (Lost Highway)

DENMARK VESEYS
Denmark Veseys
The Denmark Veseys is a Portland, Oregon based duo consisting of acclaimed singer/songwriter Jerry Joseph (Little Women, The Jackmormons, Stockholm Syndrome) and drummer/percussionist Steve Drizos (Dexter Grove). A slight departure from Joseph's past projects, The Denmark Veseys' self-titled debut introduces a new pop sensibility while still retaining the raw energy that has defined his career. The album, recorded at Chase Park Transduction Studios in Athens, GA and produced by Dave Barbe (Drive-By Truckers, REM, Son Volt), was created in a live performance atmosphere. The Denmark Veseys completed the record in just six days, capturing a true representation of the band's sound. A sound that lies somewhere between Sly & The Family Stone's "Family Affair" and Peter Gabriel's "I Can't Remember" with a big tip of the hat to the late, great Chris Whitley.

The new, self-titled even record has been over two years in the making for good reason. It is the album all music lovers have been waiting for. (Rubber Records)

NICOLAI DUNGER
Nicollide & The Carmic Retribution (Import)
"One listens to new Van Morrison albums like Geordies travel to Old Trafford - in misplaced optimism, rather than expectation. In 2001, Nicolai Dunger released Soul Rush, and it would be the best album Van Morrison had made in the past 30 years - jazzy, soulful, soaring and aching. Dunger is a singer-songwriter from Sweden, and Nicollide is his twelfth album/ EP. He has followed a wilfully eclectic course since then - following up Soul Rush, and the breakthrough Tranquil Isolation, with more of the same would have made him huge. Instead, he has released darker and darker material, released albums in Swedish instead of English (which he can't really be blamed for!), and generally done anything possible to make music that only he wanted to make. Nicollide sees him make a return to English, and to some of the strongest songs in an age. But he doesn't make it easy - among the Sufjan Stevens-like orchestration and instrumentation, there are a few tracks that would test the biggest fan. But, some here - Been Cheating, Too Free To Be Gone - are enough to make a grown man cry, such is there raw power. When Nicolai Dunger wants to write a great song he can, but here they're mixed into a 'One From The Heart'-Tom Waits romantic soundtrack and a Sufjan Stevens' Illinois reverie." -- Mike Rea, Contact Music

Bibb is son of NY folk singer Leon Bibb and nephew of pianist-composer John Lewis of the Modern Jazz Quartet. His family counted Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, and Odetta among their friends. MONKEYWRENCH
Gabriel's Horn
Putting together the progenitors of the modern underground--Mark Arm and Steve Turner of Mudhoney fame, Tim Kerr (Poison 13, King Sound Quartet, The Big Boys), Gas Huffer's Tom Price, and Martin Bland (Lubricated Goat)-- Monkeywrench is nothing less than a punk/grunge supergroup. The band kicks out the same glorious, fuzz-laden mess that characterizes Mudhoney's work, but there are notable differences here: Monkeywrench has a twisted take on everything from country to psychedelic and offers impressive bluesy guitar playing. There is a Texas roots taste spread through the tracks and the rhythm section lays down a fast and furious groove (Turner's bass playing is outstanding) while dueling guitars engage in a race to the finish line. Then there's Arm's influential rasp--an unkempt, sneering yowl. It's comforting to know these gents haven't settled down.

JIM BIANCO
Sing
Jim's new record - *sing - is a mishmash of styles and influences that include Tom Waits, sexy jazz, Elvis Costello, Soul Coughing, straight ahead pop, spoken word raps, and almost everything in between. While you might think the young singer is biting off more than he can chew, the record has a nice flow and no song seems out of place or forced. . . This record is a really unique listen, and really showcases the diversity and ambition Bianco has. Interestingly enough, he's got enough on this record to help him find a home with several audiences, so it will be interesting to see which direction he chooses. -- herohill.com

Thunderboss
J.P. `Thunderbolt` Patterson may be best known as the longtime drummer for NYC punk legends, The Dictators and a founding member of `Handsome` Dick Manitobas Dictators spinoff group, Manitobas Wild Kingdom. In addition to 16 years of recording and touring with the Dictators, J.P.s career has also included five years spent with indie rock faves The Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black, as well as performing and/or recording with Joey Ramone, Dee Dee Ramone, Patti Rothberg, Lemmy, Rhys Chatham, Timmy Cappello and so many more. RUBY SUNS
Sea Lion
The melodic musings of "Sea Lion" found inspiration in the natural world and Ryan McPhun's travels with in it. With a Dictaphone, he ventured into the wilds of Africa, the ancient monasteries of Thailand, and the haunting landscapes of New Zealand that surround his everyday. It was intended to be a world music album, but reverb and psychedelic pop crept in to create a unique mixture of exotic sounds, accomplished with an impressive array of instruments - from steel-string ukulele to djembe drums to pots and pans - all set upon a cozy cushion of synths and cassette samples.

AMATEUR RADIO OPERATOR
Sirens Of Titan
Amateur Radio Operator's slack jawed alt-country sound is perfect for a lazy Sunday morning. Sirens of Titan, showcases this neo-Americana sound as Amateur Radio Operator trudges through one mildly morose tune after another. Mark Johnson's high-pitched reverb-soaked vocals are slightly reminiscent of My Morning Jacket's Jim James-his weary, love-struck lyrics reminding us just how woeful a country song can be. On selections like "No Como Los" the band uses crescendos and pedal steel to create broad musical scope which suggests the band may have more than a few tricks up their sleeve. However, not all the selections on Sirens of Titan live up to this initially powerful display. On other tracks Johnson's country croon can sound just a bit lazy and the tunes slowly travel along a long narrow path-where it leads to I'm not exactly sure. Let's hope these Amateur Operators can hone their skills and come up with some more quality release in the future. -- Joe Tacopino, Popmatters.com

BERNARD ALLISON
Chills & Thrills
"Bernard Allison is known for his inclination towards rock music, but the strengths of 'Chills & Thrills' are not necessarily in that neighbourhood. Conversely, he shows his skills as a balladeer here. .. Bernard Allison is a fine guitarist and his singing voice is quite unique. He is ok as a song-writer, too. The best rock tracks of the new album hardly match his best recordings (Time Flies By, A Woman Named Trouble), but they surely keep you away from boredom. -- Pasi Tuominen, blues-finland.com Tracks: Chills & Thrills / Boogie Man / So Devine / When I'm Gone / Missing Tyrone / Just My Guitar and Me / Compromising for Your Needs / Black & White / Serious / Heart of St. Paul / That's Why I'm Crying / Groove with Me / Serious (After Hours) (Copy Cats)

IT'S A CRACKER!

AMERICAN MARS
Western Sides
After a four year break, Detroit`s American Mars return with a 11 songs shimmering, ethereal indie-Americana. Jangly, chiming guitars provide a counter voice to Thomas Trimble`s revealing lyrics. While firmly rooted in heartland rock, American Mars add a layer of mood to the roots sound. Pedal steel player David Feeny again sits in the producer`s chair, teasing a rich texture around Trimble`s Tom Petty-like nasal whine. With their third album American Mars has matured into a confident, skilled band with a sound that, while familiar, is uniquely theirs. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (Gangplank)

MIKE SHUPP
This Time
From just outside Washington, DC Mike Shupp found some success as a member of local phenom Big Bang Theory during the early `90s. Shupp`s third solo disc finds him awash with his jangly and power-pop sensibilities still intact. His sound brings to mind the likes of Mathew Sweet having been weaned on a diet of `80s muisc from Athens. Something of a sophisticated heartland roots-pop. Says Larry O. Dean of Amplifier Magazine "The ability to come across as approachable, coupled with winning songs and smart, uncluttered arrangements, makes This Time a must-have..." (Private Mind Records) "The former Big Bang Theory guitarist has just released his third solo album, This Time, and it`s a killer. Shupp is a renaissance performer, cut from the Marshall Crenshaw/Tommy Keene cloth; his songwriting is unpretentious and straightforward, almost transparent (that`s a good thing) and devoid of cliches...Vocally, Shupp brings to mind the underrated Darden Smith, R.E.M.`s Michael Stipe (minus his huffing and puffing) and Windbreaker Tim Lee - gruff but warm pipes, plaintive and honest sounding; when he sings, you listen and are transported." - Larry O. Dean, Amplifier Magazine. (Private Mind)

BODEANS
Still (DUE 03.18.08)
"Aside from the usual genre stand-bys like jangly fuzz guitar and complimentary vocal harmonies, the BoDeans can usually be counted on to douse their music with loads of twang, endearing them just as much to the alt.country contingent. Thus, just like many prior BoDeans records, Still is equal parts A Hard Day's Night and "Hotel California." What's here is mainly solid, occasionally sublime, but never quite spectacular. Listening to Still, I felt much the same as I had listening to the Gin Blossoms' comeback record. Both are simply solid, unassuming, and unpretentious sets of songs, not designed for an artistic renaissance or a strong charge back up the charts, but rather for the purpose of feeding a fan base hungry for new material and adding new songs to the set lists that are heavily reliant on the band's established formula. It won't make terribly many critics' album of the year lists, but those who go to the extra effort to seek Still, hardcore BoDeans fans and power pop connoisseurs alike, will be well-satisfied." -- Anthony Saggese, Stereosubversion.com. The album was produced by the legendary T-Bone Burnett and features 12 new tracks. Track Listing: Pretty Ghost / Round Here Somewhere / Willing / Lucille / The First Time / Every Day / Waste A Lifetime / Breathe / Wonder Wonder / Hearing / Found Me A Reason / Arms

She found herself inspired by the landscape and she wrote an album in her thoughts as they drove along the blue highways and back roads of the expansive west and the plains. (Sub Pop)

This release cements Vancouver, BC's Dan Bejar as an artist as quirky and enigmatic as David Bowie, as symphonic and grandiose as Scott Walker, and as quixotically literary as Bob Dylan. A collection of songs that is fresh and confounding, yet befitting the Destroyer canon. "Of all contemporary songwriters, he's been the biggest influence and inspiration. Because he is pretentious, but in a way that makes it into a game where we all get to pretend to be so grand" - Okkervil River's Will Sheff. (Merge)

ADAM GREEN
Sixes & Sevens (DUE 03.18.08)
Green is formerly one half of Moldy Peaches (with Kimya Dawson). This is his fifth solo album. His music is reminiscent of Bacharach and Brel, and he's created his own brand of playful pop while refining it with each release. He's toured with the likes of The Libertines, Badly Drawn Boy, Ben Kweller, and The Strokes. "A queasy mix of super-sharp realism, clammy surrealism, and elegant melody" - Mojo. "It always amazes me how he can express such deep meaning with such twisted humor. Adam is eccentric and down to earth, with newfound technical proficiency over a wider spectrum of styles. I love it" - Julian Casablancas, The Strokes.

INDIVIDUALS
Fields / Aguamarine (DUE 04.29.08)
Their debut EP, Aquamarine, was produced by the dB's Gene Holder. It was voted one of the best EPs of 1981 in the Village Voice's annual Pazz & Jop critics' poll. ([2]) The band's one album, Fields, was also produced by Holder and engineered by Mitch Easter. While Christgau criticized their lyrics as "lack[ing] that universal touch" ([3]}, critic Robert Palmer, writing in the New York Times in May 1982, called Fields "remarkably mature" and "the most impressive rock debut so far this year."

MISSION OF BURMA
Horrible Truth About Burma (W/DVD) (Bonus Tracks)
The posthumous album, originally released in 1984, has never been available on CD until now. The vinyl has been unavailable since the 1980s. Re-mastered and restored to its correct sequence with three bonus tracks. 32-page booklet contains ephemera, photos, and interviews. Vinyl is true all-analog, HQ-180 pressing. Salon.com wrote, "Combining rock 'n' roll's traditional fetish for pure, unmediated feeling, with a more modern sort of artistic calculation, Burma's music could evoke everything from the Beatles' ecstatic run of Hamburg rock clubs in the early 60s to the lightning-speed hardcore punk that was developing in the US during Burma's tenure. In this sense, Burma can be said to have blithely encapsulated punk's overarching mission: to draw a line connecting rock rebels past and present, and, in doing so, re-imagine and re-establish the music's anarchic condition" DVD Features: Live at the Bradford Ballroom, Boston, March 12, 1983 (evening show) (Matador)

What's Happening Around the MOM Offices

This week you will read about serious music fans, attachment to the past, and weighing the future.

AS THIS MISSIVE IS prepared each week Your Jester searches the web (no, not all of it... duh) for blurbs, reviews, or even a flickering glimpse into new releases. I learned that Van Morrison wrote 11 songs specifically for his new album. I'm so enlightened by this "news" Well, not really. As I search for information it is pretty common to come across user comments and reviews.

I make no pretense, I am not a music critic. I write a few words that, hopefully, encourage you to further explore. I couldn't be bothered to write the in-depth pieces. That doesn't mean that many music fans want to express their deeply held feelings about a release. By "deeply held," I mean "extremely passionate," and, typically, horrible writing.

This week I repeatedly came across the phrase "any serious music fan" in fan reviews of releases that I truly wouldn't consider essential for a serious music fan. It made me think about the phrase. I consider myself a serious music fan. The Queen thinks of herself as such. The Mangling Tree Commissioner, too.

I just don't think I would ever use the phrase. I admit I'm a pretentious music nerd. Can you imagine calling in an order and having The Mangler or Your Jester pressuring you with the pitch, "If you are a serious music fan, you must have the new Dylan." That isn't going to happen.

Maybe we're rooted in an anachronistic hippie mindset. Music is to be dug. If you can share it with a friend who digs it as much, then that's cool. Hippie, right?

Listening to music is important, but it rarely elevates to serious.

SOMETIMES THE MOST emotionally heartbreaking and fulfilling moments of this business come from nowhere. We'll get calls from folks who have an old LP that they listened to while growing up. Typically, it was a parent that brought the music into the house. The caller, as a young child, connected with the music and his parents and is now looking to replace the treasured artifact.

They call in with the LP in hand so they can mine as much information from it as possible which might help their quest. Reciting the artist, the album name, the label, and the catalog number are all straight-forward. The caller will typically also try to describe the album artwork.

The idea isn't getting the songs that are on the LP. The objective is to get something that replicates the LP as closely as possible. A brand new LP would be ideal but they albums we're talking about are typically 35-40 years old. A CD would be great as well as long as it is that album and it looks kind of like what they remembered.

We get lucky and can find something close enough. Sometimes not. During the search, the callers will leak out small details. "Mom used to play this on cold Sunday mornings when we were all just getting out of bed. The house smelled like bacon. Dad had the Sunday paper sorted into the order he liked to read it." Small, personal details.

I think they want to talk about the music and memories as much as find an adequate replacement for the aging LP.

For a long time I only thought about this as a later in life thing. That you start reflecting on those moments in your childhood as you get older. Then I had a revealing conversation with my middle school-aged niece.

I've mentioned before that she loves the Beatles and Beach Boys, The other kids in her school are "stupid" because they don't like the Beatles. We all did that. Is it that far from the, "If you are a serious music fan," thinking?

The she revealed how her dad, my brother, had turned her on to the Beatles. He did it in a very deliberate way. It wasn't just music playing in the background while he popped Eggos into the toaster over -- my brother isn't much of a cook -- it is part of a modern-day oral history being passed along from one generation to the next. Mostly she likes the music and, probably, the connection it makes with her dad.

THERE IS A FLOOD OF GOOD STUFF COMING. Lining up in the coming weeks are a new Justin Townes Earle, Roy Davis, Joe Fournier, and Butch Ryan. All are very good. We've hit a good vein of releases in the mail bins. I'm sure some mathematician could create an equation based on previous releases good for "serious music fans", the number of new artists that appear every year, the number of bands that abandon the career never to be heard from again etc.

What fun would that be? There is pleasure in knowing that a new Butch Ryan album is coming. Pleasure of knowing albums from favorites are in progress. Hope that those in progress albums will actually be good when delivered. Sadness in hearing that a band you once loved has temporarily reunited to honor a fallen comrade and raise money for his funeral. Anger that you can't be there to see it. Curiosity when you remember a guy who made records that you loved and haven't heard from in years. (Does anyone know what Mike Ireland is up to these days?). Joy in the entire experience.

Until next week

Your Jester, The Mangling Tree Commissioner, The Queen, Satchel, Merle, Miles, and Nuke The Attack Turtle
