IT'S A CRACKER!! THE BEST OF THE BANDS YOU'VE NEVER HEARD!

CRACKERS !

IT'S A CRACKER!
THE MORNING LINE

Stay My Satellite
The Morning Line capture the raspy mournful vibe of Elliott Smith combined with a three-chord jangly pop. Veterans Stephen Smith (Salem 66, Green Magnet School), David Shollenbarger (Agent Orange, Blood On The Saddle), David Knupp (Joe Buck), and Marco Baroz (Joe Buck) use their experience (and age) to echo the mid-80s sound of REM and American Music Club (sans moroseness). This hook-filled album nicely mixes up rockers and introspective tunes. They don't mess around, trying to sound hip and new. They go with what they know and and do it very well. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (self-released)

IT'S A CRACKER!
KELLY PARDEKOOPER
Brand New Bag
"Recorded on two-inch analog tape and assisted by members from groups backing Jo De Messina, John Doe and Junior Brown, Iowan Kelly Pardekooper sounds as if he's channeling The Dandy Warhols on the retro-rock, groovy title track that sets the album off on the right course. But it's just a teaser as he settles down for the slow and roots based "Crazy Girl", where Pardekooper shuffles along as if he was covering Mark Knopfler. Fans of Todd Snider will revel in a number like "Last Call", which is a rather sparse but comforting affair that sounds as if the artist recorded it while someone was mopping the barroom floor before closing. The album chugs along nicely with the near-perfect "Mehaffey Bridge", the equally gorgeous "Quiet Tonight", and the haunting, mysterious "Sometimes". What makes the album so consistently good is Pardekooper's ability to show different sides of his craft without diminishing the song's quality or shortchanging himself. The icing on the cake though has to be the stellar "Grandma's Rosary" with its Springsteen quality. 8/10 stars " -- Popmatters.com

GRAHAM PARKER
Don't Tell Columbus
Suffused with the heft of the epic, Don't Tell Columbus's lyrical and emotional resonance straddles the Atlantic and evinces GP's stature as one of the most gifted writers in rock 'n' roll. From the personal and metaphorically grand "The Other Side of the Reservoir" to the overtly political and swinging "Stick to the Plan," this album ripples with tension between the melancholic, the urgent and the hopeful. Best of all, it's wrapped in his gifted brawny pop and blue-eyed soul smarts. Only GP can have you happily humming along to songs swaddled in desperate loneliness and internal mayhem. (Bloodshot)

PAULA FRAZER AND TARNATION
Now It's Time
Paula Frazer resurrects Tarnation...and the results are mesmerizing. This band had a good bit of success in underground circles before Frazer eventually dissolved the group and concentrated on her solo recordings. But after writing a bunch of new tunes that reminded her of her former band, Paula opted to release Now It's Time under the band's name as well as her own... This eleven track album features moody, personal, slightly distant soft pop tunes...all of which sound like forgotten classics. The arrangements are precise and appropriate...and Paula's vocals are exceedingly perfect from start to finish. OLAV LARSEN & The Alabama Rodeo Stars
Love's Come To Town
Already a cult phenomenon in Scandinavia and gaining quick revere in the UK, Olav writes songs that sublimely resonate with broken hearts, lost highways, sunshine daydreams and drunken promises. Astutely supported by his band, The Alabama Rodeo Stars, "Love's Come To Town" is adorned with acoustic guitars, fiddles, harmonica, dobros, pianos and accordions. And while that might sound downright reverent to his influences, Olav and his band deliver with an urgency and modernity that finds them sitting comfortably amongst the likes of Giant Sand, Wilco and Ryan Adams. As the UK's Maverick Magazine recently declared: "This is one of those rare happenings, an album that warms the cockles from uplifting start to fantastic, celebratory end. The more you play this the more you enjoy it until it becomes a best friend." (Hyena)

ROSIE THOMAS
These Friends Of Mine
"I sort of wanted to get back to that time when I played music for nothing," says singer-songwriter Rosie Thomas of her fourth and best album, a Spartan 10-song collection of new and used songs. Throughout, Thomas' delicate vocals lilt over the album's center, while her friends (Dave Bazan, Jeremy Enigk, Damien Jurado, Sufjan Stevens) frame her introspective poetry with backing vocals and minimal acoustic arrangements. Be careful, though: The ache is contagious." -- Shawn Telford, seattlepi.nwsource.com (Nettwerk)

Hitting all the hotspots between Harlingen and Honolulu, Jon and his band (featuring Calexico and Jon's longtime guitarist/ co-conspirator Tommy Connell) swing, sigh, giggle and charm their way into even those with hearts of tar. There are performances by a few of the top notch singers of our day: Neko Case ("East of the Sun"), Kelly Hogan ("Big Iron"), Rachel Flotard of Visqueen ("Harbor Lights") and Sally Timms ("I'll Be Seeing You"). AMY WINEHOUSE

Back To Black
"There are two clear traditions of 'diva' in soul music. On one side there's Diana Ross - and her natural heir, Beyonce - all immaculate polish and surface. And on the other there are the likes of Etta James - a woman whose music reeks of desire and emotion. It's to this 'Dark Soul' tradition that Amy Winehouse aspires - she's certainly got the voice for it. And the music. The much praised opening track, Rehab, comes across like an obscure northern soul gem, riddled with pathos and melodrama. In fact none of the music here sounds like it was made after 1967...Much of the rest of this pleasingly short album - eleven three-minute or so tracks - goes on to explore the joyful misery of being young, messy and in love/lust. -- Matt Harvey, bbc.co.uk (Republic)

UNCLE EARL
Waterloo, Tennessee,
Haunting, playful, elegant, relentless...on their sophomore album Waterloo, Tennessee, the four women of Uncle Earl awaken the sleeping giant of old-time stringband music and hold it as a mirror to our present era. Resolutely modern, yet preserving the luminous mystery of its ancient origins, their music illuminates what is timeless in the everyday. Produced by John Paul Jones, Waterloo, Tennessee laces raucous fiddle tunes and jug band blues with ballads of loss and exile, love songs, and a profound longing that can only be echoed in the strains of fiddles, banjos, mandolins, crystalline tender harmonies, and the occasional wobbleboard. THE RED BUTTON
She's About To Cross My Mind
The Red Button is LA-based singer-songwriters Seth Swirsky and Mike Ruekberg. Ruekberg is writer and singer for pop-rockers Rex Daisy, and wrote the soundtrack for an indie film (Dummy, starring Adrien Brody). Swirsky has written hit songs for artists ranging from Al Green to Tina Turner to Taylor Dayne. The two met in 2004, when Seth was recording his first solo album, Instant Pleasure (Best Pop Album; 2005 Los Angeles Music Awards). But it`s Clark`s songwriting that takes center stage, with tunes like `She`s Crazy for Leavin`` and `Heartbroke` (which later became a big hit for Ricky Skaggs) representing the man`s way with meticulously crafted lyrics, and melodies that blend the best of outlaw country with elements of folk and rock. CHUCK E. WEISS
23RD & Stout
Discom-bop-ulated jive' is how chuck e. weiss describes his fourth album '23rd and stout', his latest collection of songs from the bohemian front line. His songs rejoice in the dirtiest, moodiest, most finger-popping grooves - from the Cuban garageband surf guitar of Novade Nada to the loungebar swing of Primrose Lane. The lyrics are populated by a cast of oddballs, cool cats, midnight ramblers and low-rent chancers, all brought to life by the magic of Weiss's gruff, after-hours delivery. Scratch the surface of these narratives, and most times you'll find a real-life story. Like the one about the hustler who, many years ago, accosted Weiss in the street and asked him for 50 cents so that he could get himself down to 23rd & Stout. Sweetheart Of The Rodeo
Sweetheart of the Rodeo will forever be revered as the Byrds' 1968 album that opened the eyes of the hip and the young to country music. Whether it was the first country-rock album doesn't really matter: It was certainly the best and most heartfelt such excursion and paved the way for fabled combos the Flying Burrito Bros. and Poco yet to come. Sweetheart featured the first extensive lineup change for the Byrds, as Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman said goodbye to David Crosby, Gene Clark and Michael Clarke and welcomed former International Submarine Band leader Gram Parsons into the fold. With his magical voice and bona fide country pedigree, Parsons helped unleash a style that had already begun to seep into the Byrds' sound. What's Happening Around the MOM Offices

This week you will read about an overly joyful operator, and having a good time, but getting out alive, and a completed taco story.

A FEW YEARS AGO YOUR JESTER had jury duty at the downtown court. Getting around LA , in general, can be a drag. A crawl, really... A slow, torturous crawl. Being a forward thinker, I decided to take the subway (yes, we do have a subway even if it really doesn't go places I seem to want to regularly go). I did my day of jury duty, didn't get picked for a case (draw your own conclusions about my jury worthiness), and headed back to the subway. I did manage to get lost for a minute on my way back to the station which, for me, is a common occurrence. Maybe it was the thrill of finding the station and knowing I was on my way home. I'm not exactly sure why, but as the train approached, I bunched up my fists and did a little punch into the air while saying out loud, "Here comes the train!"

Yes, as soon as I did it I felt like a complete idiot. And, yes, I was seen by other riders who gave me a dismissive look.

The last several weeks have been fairly intense for DJ Jeff, The Queen and Your Jester. The warehouse move has been bumpy and we know it.

We're spending a lot of time and energy problem solving. Which is fine, because that was expected. We got yelled at, via e-mail, for spending too much time gossiping (this missive) and not enough time pushing packages out the door. It was out of frustration.

A call came in yesterday which Your Jester grabbed. The customer said, "I'd like to place an order." Your Jester replied with tremendous exuberance, almost yelling. "Great! Let's get you started." At that very moment I was back on the train platform, excited that the subway was coming and I was about to safely head home.

The part I think a lot of people don't understand is how personally we take all of this. We want to do a great job for every single person that comes our way. Not just an adequate job. Not just a good job. We want you to be thrilled when a package arrives. Fair enough to say we set a hard-to-reach high standard for ourselves, but we know what it is like to be on the other side of the counter, real or virtual.

The customer was a bit startled by the level of enthusiasm exhibited by Your Jester. The Queen spun around in her chair, looked at me, and busted out laughing. After I hung up with the customer I couldn't help but laugh a little bit at myself. It really felt great to take an order.

DJ JEFF AND YOUR JESTER have been talking about the recent and upcoming releases that are coming across our desks. His taste and my taste have a reasonable overlapping, even if mine is superior (sorry, arrogant music geek comes out with little notice). He likes stuff far noisier than me. I like "three chords and the truth" to use an old cliche. So, we banter. The one thing we've agreed upon is how "somber" so much music has been lately. Quiet and introspective. Sure, music reflects society and we've got a lot to think about right now. That doesn't mean there isn't a lot of really good music being made. As I said at the beginning of the year, I am more excited about the quality of music right now than at any time in recent years.

Let me be an early predictor of a resurgence of vacuous part music.
Will hair-metal rise again? Maybe without the toxic clouds of hairspray that enveloped your average Sunset Strip guitar slinger, but music that is designed to make you (or your kids, really) feel like partying.

In the meantime, enjoy, if that's the right word, the creative spurt that comes from feeling crappy.

LAST WEEK YOUR JESTER LEFT A FEW PEOPLE hanging by teasing a taco story and not coming through. Your Jester felt great shame denying folks the pleasures of hearing about a stand in the bowels of Hollywood that features goat as one of the meat choices.

Before the Neko Case show, The Queen, Your Jester and our friend Jon (he has no discernible nickname, but he hipped us to Porter Wagoner) when to Cactus Taqueria #1. Presumably, the #1 in the name means there are others in the chain.

We queued up, stared at the unfamiliar menu and, of course, went for tacos. When you go to a new taco stand, you try the tacos, right?

Together we ordered eight tacos (only carne asada, carnitas, and al pastor, none of us were adventurous enough that night for goat or cabesa) and a few drinks.

So far, it is a typical taco stand experience where we are the only Caucasians at the stand and we communicate in Spanglish.

While we're waiting a cab pulls up. Out jumps "the suit" who has called ahead to order for his clients who remain hidden in the minivan. We never got a look at the clients. Based on all of the clues from witnessing the experience, this was a band headed to a gig, probably right from the airport. "The suit" was the label guy who was charged with feeding the band, and he knew of this "hipster" taco stand in the heart of Hollywood.

The Queen, Your Jester, and Jon fell somewhere in the middle between locals and hipster. Speaking only of Your Jester and Jon, we are both soon to be middle-aged guys. The Queen is, of course, always young and fabulous.

The tacos were good. The meat was tender. The salsa was blazing hot, although Your Jester is a bit of a tenderfoot. Cactus Taqueria #1 was worth the trip into Hollywood (especially since we've run through most of the taco stands in the East Valley)

If you come to LA, we've got lots of taco stand choices wherever you might be staying. The Queen and I will drive almost anywhere for a good, cheap taco experience.

Until next week

The Queen, Your Jester, and DJ Jeff
