IT'S A CRACKER!
PETER COOPER
Mission Door
Peter Cooper brings the eye of a journalist -- his day job -- to his songs, but adds sympathy to what is otherwise honest reporting. He writes about idealized and fallen idols, barrooms and shady characters. Cooper is joined by steel wizard Lloyd Green on the record and in the producer's chair. Evocative songs, exemplary playing and Cooper's easy delivery combine making Mission Door an album rich for repeated listenings. (Red Beet)

IT'S A CRACKER!
FAYSSOUX
Early
Fayssoux McLean was best known in music circles for providing harmonies on the first four Emmylou Harris solo albums. Journalist and musician Peter Cooper coaxed Fayssoux from retirement resulting in this sublime country album. McLean and Cooper combined her originals, traditional songs her grandma used to sing, and classics from well respected songwriters. Cooper, Lloyd Green, and Brandon Turner provide a gentle, aching country backing. Several old friends and admirers contribute, including former boss Harris but never overshadow the true star in this production, Fayssoux McLean. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (Red Beet)

Read the fascinating back-story on how this album came about 30+ years after Fayssoux unofficially retired from the music business.

IT'S A CRACKER!
JOHN NELSON ** NOW WITH WORKING SOUND CLIPS **
Tengo Ranchito
John Nelson delivers each song with a calm, almost moist vocal that draws a little from Paul Simon, an accent-less Graham Nash, and a gentle Neil Young. His voice is elegantly calming as it and the harmonies melt into the disciplined guitar picking and tender band. It all feels so effortless, as it it floats out of Nelson and his band. Tengo Ranchito, Nelson's 2007 release succeeds in gently, beautifully squeezing out your breath. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (Mystery Bay)

BILLY BRAGG
Mr. Love & Justice (Deluxe)
This deluxe version features an extra CD with Billy performing the entirety of "Mr. Love & Justice" live in the studio - one man with a guitar, just like it was in the beginning.

In his two and a half decades carrying the torch of social justice, Billy Bragg has melded the folksy populism of Woody Guthrie with the anger and indignation of The Clash. Both are perfectly encapsulated on his Anti debut. Despite the intense politics behind his songs, Billy has never lost sight of the power of personal relationships to hold us together and bring about the kind of redemption that outstrips even the greatest political movements. Musically, this record combines the loose, Stonesy groove Bragg found working with Wilco on the "Mermaid Ave." sessions, with the best parts of his punk and music hall roots. On his most mature record to date, the title says it all. (Anti-)

EL PERRO DEL MAR

From The Valley To The Stars
The fragile voice of Sarah Assbring lends itself beautifully to the angelic lullabies on From the Valley to the Stars, her second album. The title of the work calls to mind the greatest depths and heights of our world, and Assbring's smooth voice, paired with a variety of instruments from a somber church organ to playful flute, takes listeners to the same extremes in 16 songs. . .The extremely talented solo artist juxtaposes simple, nursery rhyme - like rhythms with profound musings. Overall, this album aches with mystery and pain, yet manages to remain tranquil. Sarah's unique combination of light and dark, high and low can be summed up in her song 'Your Name is Never Ending' in which she sings, 'You are a memory/ these days it's all you are/ I have a memory/ sometimes it's all I've got/ don't mean it's over/ just means you're never ending.' -- Adrianne Munkacsy, Feminist Review

DILLARD & CLARK
Fantastic Expedition Of Dillard & Clark
The 1968 debut, originally released on A&M, from one of the first and finest L.A. country-rock outfits. Comprised of Gene Clark, hot on the heels of his departure from the Byrds and his debut solo release (with the Gosdin Bros.), and Doug Dillard, the virtuosic banjoist/guitarist of the Dillards. Gene Clark is perhaps the most underrated songwriter of the 1960s and this could very well be his finest post-Byrds moment. Featuring help from fellow Byrd Chris Hillman, future Burrito Brother "Sneaky" Pete Kleinow, and future Burrito/Eagle Bernie Leadon, this is an absolutely essential piece of L.A. country-rock history, not to mention an out and out masterpiece. JASON SPACEMAN & THE SUN CITY GIRLS

Mister Lonely
The all-new soundtrack album from Harmony Korine's film Mister Lonely featuring Jason Spaceman (Spiritualized/Spacemen 3) and The Sun City Girls. The soundtrack is deceptively minimal -- a guitar or piano line that blinks past repetition and blushes into something grander; a motif reappearing under new auspices; link pieces that become spotlight moments, densely worked-out, stars in their own right. Working independently and never collaborating, Jason Spaceman and Sun City Girls employ an instrumental approach for the sounds here, with one or two chanted exceptions. Their music conspires in an exquisite corpse-like fashion--without knowing what the other was doing, they've each brought half a body to the film, supplying the apparitional and austere sounds of a world in which everyone is something they're not, i.e., the people they dream of being. A runaway-train success, this landmark album stayed on the national charts for a mind-boggling six years and won King four Grammys®. "You'll hear suggested guitar and bass lines, and background vocal parts, because that's the way she plays the piano...that was the brilliance of her demos and that's the way I heard these songs for the first time." Forever Changes (Collector's Edition)
The third and final album by the original Love lineup, Forever Changes regularly draws epic praise. TEA LEAF GREEN

Seeds
This three disc compilation consists of the band's first three self-distributed titles that have never been available at retail. The group, which is exploding out of a revitalized San Francisco music scene, has honed their strength as both songwriters and improvisationalists to carve a distinct name for themselves. Thanks to their loyal and rabid fan base, the band has gone from playing small bars to large theatres in just a few short years by consistently delivering fresh, mind-blowing live performances, while selling out shows in Los Angeles, Denver, Chicago, Atlanta, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, New York and, most notably, the historic Fillmore Auditorium in their hometown of San Francisco. The band's chops earned the respect of their musical contemporaries as they found themselves sharing stages with The Dave Matthews Band, Trey Anastasio, Gov't Mule, Bruce Hornsby, and many others.

MATT BALDWIN
Paths of Ignition
Matt Baldwin, raised in California's rustic Pacific Grove, educated in the alternative mecca of Berkeley, sits in the center of this quiet, swirling scene. He is the visionary wildcard of today's solo guitar music, the ambitious fever dreamer, the serpent in the grass. Towering tall with long blonde locks, he conjures from his axe dark and mystical realms. He calls his music "New Age," and he may not be joking. Featured on Tompkins Square's 2006 Berkeley Guitar LP, Baldwin now steps into his own with his debut solo release. Unlike many of his peers, he looks beyond the traditions of John Fahey (whom he calls "a teacher," not a god), bringing portentous and progressive elements into his music, alongside a dreamy country lilt. He covers Krautrock legends Neu! ("Weissensee") and metal Vikings Judas Priest ("Winter"), and culls inspiration from prog heroes Yes on the closing epic "Rainbow." His music comes on like a creeping moss, verdant but threatening, comforting yet unsettling. It will work its way inside you. (American Dust)

PROFESSOR LONGHAIR

Tipitinal: Complete 1949-1957 New Orleans
Henry Roeland "Professor Longhair" Byrd is one of the handful of New Orleans music legends above all others, ranked with the likes of Louis Armstrong, Fats Domino, and Mahalia Jackson. Like Jelly Roll Morton, Sidney Bechet, and others, his greatness did not necessarily translate to hit records and sold-out performances. But, along with Roy Brown and Fats Domino, his spirit helped kick off the reawakening of New Orleans music after World War II, inspiring a host of local admirers, notably Huey Smith, James Booker, Allen Toussaint, Earl King, Dr. John, the Meters, and Domino himself. AMELIA

Long,Lovely List Of Repairs
Teisha Helgerson (vocals/drums), Jesse Emerson (bass) and Scott Weddle (guitar/vocals), collectively known as Amelia, create a beautifully wrenching album with A long, lovely list of repairs. The pained singing fits nicely with the rustic melodies. There are elements of country, blues, and folk in this album but more than anything that tracks are stripped down musically to highlight the signing and the message being sung. This is a very album filled with moving, mid-tempo melodies that remind the listener that even in the dimmest of situations there is hope and that part of being healed isn't looking towards what recovery will be like but the process that comes with working towards. -- Jason Kordich, Jivemagazin.com (Adrenaline)

Fields / Aguamarine
Their debut EP, Aquamarine, was produced by the dB's Gene Holder. It was voted one of the best EPs of 1981 in the Village Voice's annual Pazz & Jop critics' poll. ([2]) The band's one album, Fields, was also produced by Holder and engineered by Mitch Easter. While Christgau criticized their lyrics as "lack[ing] that universal touch" ([3]}, critic Robert Palmer, writing in the New York Times in May 1982, called Fields "remarkably mature" and "the most impressive rock debut so far this year."

What's Happening Around the MOM Offices

WHAT'S HAPPENING

This week you will read about the history lessons learned from an antiquated song, and appreciation for those providing support.

YOU WILL START NOTICING SOME SUBTLE CHANGES in the upcoming weeks. I'm linking more outside content to, hopefully, give me you more opportunity to try-before-you-buy. I'm also taking my name off of the reviews I write in The Crackers section. When we had others writing them it was a way for them to get recognition and, potentially, use them i pursuit of other employment. Since it is me, and always me writing those blurbs I don't feel like I need to announce that every time. You get plenty of me in other places. There are some small e-mail things I'm changing which will hopefully enrich your experience... or make you less angry at me. Either way, it is good.

What you are going to see in the e-mail and on the website is a loosening up. This week there was no information on the new Elvis Costello. I haven't heard it. I don't know anyone outside of Lost Highways staffers who have heard it. In the past we would put the release aside until we could find something useful. While I will agree that release dates are increasingly meaningless, we still want to hit them as best we can. So Elvis goes up with almost nothing to support its high placement on the page except it is Elvis Costello and Lost Highway does a neat job with their vinyl releases.

Back to the regularly scheduled nonsene.

LAST WEEK'S MENTION OF the use of songs other than "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" during baseball's 7th inning stretch led to a conversation about tradition. Your Jester is a purist is many ways but is willing to be flexible, but just in this instance.

Many of the regulars pointed out that "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" is played in conjunction with another song.

Baltimore uses John Denver's "Thank God I'm A Country Boy." It is a mystery to Your Jester how a song from a guy identified as a Colorado songwriter became a tradition at a ballpark in a city largely recognized as a shipping port. The Tree Commish pointed out that Baltimore has a strong rural/agrarian tradition.

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (they will always be the California Angels or, at best, The Anaheim Angels to me) use "Take Me Out to The Ballgame" and Gene Autry's "Back In The Saddle Again." The later is an homage to their long-time team owner.

A few complained that their local tradition has been co-opted by other cities that are obviously not clever enough to come up with their own fun song to sing. Hello Red Sox fans! Hello Mets fans!

Several pointed out that teams will trot out a rendition of "God Bless America" during bigger sports events or on celebratory/patriotic days. Your Jester loves his country but do not mess with my "Take Me Out To The Ballgame."

The week turned out to be an interesting lesson in how some cities and towns are perceived, how traditions start and continue. Sometimes they start as a marketing plan and transcend their commercial roots. Sometimes they start totally by accident. These songs, though, become part of the fabric of the team and the city.

But, remember, don't mess with my "Take Me Out To The Ballgame."

Next week we'll discuss mascot races. Or, not.

TUESDAY, APRIL 23 IS ADMINISTRATIVE PROFESSIONAL DAY. Once known as Secretaries Day in the pre-PC days, was created as a way to encourage secretarial careers. Oh, the innocent '50s! I was thinking about what would make a good "Administrative Professional" in my employ.

Besides providing me with a near-constant stream of coffee (hot or cold, I'm not picky, just an addict), the assistant needs to have a soundtrack of music ready for all occasions. For instance, when I walk in every morning I want to be greeted with a song that is going to put me in a positive mood for the day. Let's say The Call "Let The Day Begin." It is an uplifting, spiritual song. That and a cup of coffee kicks off those 7:30 am days just great.

If I come back from an afternoon meeting and I'm in a lousy mood because the boss just chewed me out for not placing my TPS Reports in the proper wall slot, I want my assistant to have something like Lee Ann Womack's "I Hope You Dance" ready to cheer me up.

If I've just nailed a big contract I want "Rock You Like A Hurricane" blaring while I walk around flashing double vikings.

The administrative assistant, besides providing essential office services, should also have a deep knowledge of music and ESP to read the bosses mind. The occasional unasked-for chocolate chip danish would rule too.

Value a good administrative professional, especially one that will put up with a music-addict boss.

THE TREE COMMISH HAS OFFICIAL City of Sierra Madre business cards and a committee binder. He is a man of importance and not to be trifled with.

Last night's city agenda included discussion on three senior oaks and an evil developer. I suppose a good administrative professional would play Darth Vadar's theme when the developers entered the city planning meeting. Yes, it is obvious, but that joke never gets old.

The Tree Commish even left work early so he could go home and "clean up" before the meeting. I guess a band t-shirt and baseball cap isn't appropriate wear for a city council meeting.

He is a man who holds your Sierra Madre future in his grip so respect him! A joking administrative professional would play the theme song to the Three Stooges when city council meets, but that's an in-general joke that works for all bodies of government.

Until next week
