It's A Cracker !

IT'S A CRACKER!! THE BEST OF THE BANDS YOU'VE NEVER HEARD!

CRACKERS ! (Buy it, you'll like it. Or we'll take it back. Only those with "It's A Cracker!!" above the title.)

IT'S A CRACKER!
SHAWN BYRNE

But I Digress
Michael McCall wrote in The Nashville Scene, "Byrne takes an expansive view on the possibilities of roots music." That is, Byrne has made a terrific Christian country record. He seamlessly incorporates a broad range of musical flavors into this very satisfying (and spiritually
uplifting) release. Shawn Byrne migrated from Boston (and from the band The Kickbacks) to Nashville, and earned his way as a demo singer and songwriter. His version of his song "Ol' Cook Pot", the lead track on the Duhks album "Migrations," is included here. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (What? Records)

IT'S A CRACKER!
JED AND KELLEY

Songs to Take Home
The sophomore release from Memphis, TN-based duo showcases their emerging talent for beautiful harmony vocals and engaging and gentle country/folk. Jed & Kelley aspire to the mantle of great duos like George and Tammy or June and Johnny. Keith Sykes' clean production pushes the vocals to the front, giving prominence to Jed's simple songs about home, family and life. - Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (self-released)

IT'S A CRACKER!
SODAJERK

2

The relocation to Atlanta from Pittsburgh has, seemingly, sharpened the band's hooks. Sodajerk still have an Iron City swagger to their pedal-fueled country-rock. The band trades in witty lyrics, rollicking guitars and memorable melodies. They can be tender. They can be tough. Sodajerk seemingly has an endless supply of fun. - Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (self-released)

IT'S A CRACKER!
JAMES SASSER

The Melcliff
The Melcliff shimmers, vibrates and swirls as if it was recorded in the halcyon folk-rock days of Los Angeles in the 1960s, not Portland in 2006. Sasser combines a soft croon with minor chords, chiming acoustic guitars and a warm reverb. Think an Everly Brothers record without the harmonies or a Mamas and Papas record, with just one Papa. Sasser's engaging songwriting makes The Melcliff one of the terrific surprises of the year. -- Jeff Weiss. Miles of Music (self-released)

DALE WATSON
From The Cradle To The Grave
Dale Watson is a Texas music hero. Over his long and prolific career, he's proven himself to be one of the last authentic voices in pure country music. In fact, in the spirit of the music's outlaw lineage, Dale has disavowed himself of the country label and begun calling his music Ameripolitan. However it might be described, on his album, From The Cradle To The Grave, it's the music that speaks the loudest. Dale offers ten new songs that range from the epic "Justice For All" to the achingly beautiful ballad, "It's Not Over Now." And if it sounds like Johnny Cash's presence is looming over the recordings, that's because it was. The album was recorded in Cash's old Tennessee Mountain cabin. Dale embraced the Cash aura and in the process turned out one of his best albums to date in an already impressive discography. (Hyena)

JOHN PRINE & MAC WISEMAN
Standard Songs For Average People
Breathtaking and heartwarming, Prine and Wiseman joine forces to release Standard Songs for Average People, a duets album of classic American songs. Each track on the record shares an innate humanity and emotional directness that binds them together into a poignant thematic collection. Prine and Wiseman put their own stamp on Lefty Frizzell's hit "Saginaw Michigan," and Tom T. Hall's beloved "Old Dogs, Children and Watermelon Wine." Other standouts include Kris Kristofferson's "Just the Other Side of Nowhere" and the old standard "Where the Blue of the Night," made famous by Bing Crosby. Track Listing: Blue Eyed Elaine/Don't Be Ashamed of Your Age/I Forgot to Remember to Forget/I Love You Because/Pistol Packin' Mama/Saginaw Michigan/Old Dogs, Children and Watermelon Wine/Old Cape Cod/Death of Floyd Collins/Blue Side of Lonesome/In the Garden/Just the Other Side of Nowhere/Old Rugged Cross/Where the Blue of the Night. THE DETROIT COBRAS

Tied And True (DUE 04.24.07)
Stretching out in the studio like never before, and including contributions from top line players like Greg Cartwright (Reigning Sound) the Cobras have created a versatile and formidable wall of Spector sound. Be it eerie or orchestral, or pure rock and roll rough up, Tied and True puts the Cobras on a whole new level-of many sources but a genus all its own. Soul lives below the belt, and whether you're looking to be grinding it slow or shaking it up good, the Cobras bring it tough and tender, savage and sweet. (Bloodshot)

While retaining the high octane rock of their previous releases, it's not difficult to appreciate the band's maturation both lyrically and musically. While a departure to some degree, expect existing fans to love it, and new fans to be drawn in. For fans of Lucero, Drive By Truckers and Drag The River! ROCKY VOTOLATO

Brief History
A Brief History gives an interesting perspective on where Rocky Votolato's early writing style began as well as the path his career has taken. With the majority of these songs being written when he was between 16 and 18 years old, these songs show a songwriter in his formative years. With only 1000 copies ever pressed by the now defunct label Your Best Guess, Second Nature re-releases this long out-of-print EP so fans will no longer have to resort to overpriced copies on e-bay. CALVIN JOHNSON & THE SONS OF THE SOIL

Calvin Johnson & The Sons Of The Soil
The premise of this record was "What if Calvin Johnson played all his best songs from over the years, with a band of real music-making people?" From there K recording artists Khaela Maricich and Jason Anderson formed a band of other K music stalwarts, dubbed them The Sons Of The Soil, and a tour commenced, covering songs originally recorded by Halo Benders, Dub Narcotic Sound System, and the Go Team. This album was recorded shortly after the tour and it features a good cross section of tour material as well as some live snippets from the Sons Of The Soil performance in Spokane, WA. (K. Records)

MCCARTHY TRENCHING

Mccarthy Trenching
Dan McCarthy has spent the past five years playing/touring with Mayday, Neva Dinova, The Good Life, Orenda Fink, Maria Taylor, Bright Eyes, and others. He's also contributed to other bands' recordings such as Cursive's "Happy Hollow" and Tilly And The Wall's "Bottoms Of Barrels". His self-titled album is a distillation of two collections of songs from "Old Habits" (2003's self-released nine song collection of drinking songs and waltzes) and 2005-2006's "It's Got Nothing To Do With The Drinking", given to only a handful of friends and family before Team Love expressed interest in releasing a "best of what you've put on tape so far". McCarthy Trenching compiles beautifully understated tracks that sound like a sunnier Townes Van Zandt.(Team Love)

BILL CALLAHAN

Woke On A Whaleheart
"The cyclical nature of life absorbs Bill Callahan on this debut solo album - though not primarily in the paired tracks "Day" and "Night", more concerned with surmounting venality and temptation in order to improve society, bit by bit: "A small potato in the blight/ Still strives towards the light," he notes. It may be an illusion, but he seems more anchored and content among the metaphors of birth and decay, evaporation and precipitation, and the revolutions of the Great Wheel Of Life "driving bad deeds six feet deep"... Musically, Callahan has ceded ultimate control here to Neil Michael Hagerty, who locates pretty much the appropriate style - from Johnny Cash-style trotting strum, to tack-piano stomp, brittle new-wave brio to sinister Twin Peaks twang, pizzicato strings to poppy organ - for each song." 4 STARS -- Andy Gill, independent.co.uk (Drag City)

ROBERT POLLARD

Silverfish Trivia
"..This 'mini-LP' is all over the place, coming closest to Motel of Fools in the Pollard canon both in its brevity and its inconsistency. In seven songs, there's two very plain string arrangements that bookend the record. Then there's short acoustic tunes "Wickerman Smile" and "Waves, Etc", both decent but unable to catch the ear. The bulk of the album's time is spent on "Cats Love a Parade", an eight-minute tune that isn't so much a song cycle as a handful of snippet songs awkwardly strung together. The results are sometimes interesting, but overall taxing. The most successful songs here, "Circle Saw Boys Club" and "Touched to Be Sure", are classic pop-tune Pollard fare. They'd be comfortable on either of his Merge releases and contain his irreverent lyricism in spades..." -- Matthew Fiander, popmatters.com (Prom Is Coming)

DIGGIN GOLD: A GALAXY OF WEST COAST BLUES

Various
"Diggin' Gold", as compiler Alec Palao states in the opening paragraph of his extensive liner notes, focuses on the many rare blues and R&B entries in the Galaxy discography 1963-65 that came from one particular Los Angeles production house, that of producer Cliff Goldsmith and arranger Ray Shanklin, that have escaped reissue. With the help of Fantasy vault-keeper Stuart Kremsky, Alec Palao has mine-swept its deep recesses. "The album's central appeal lies in Gainsbourg's whispery, London-accented vocals. MARIA MCKEE

Late December
Throughout her lengthy career McKee has showcased both her incredible voice and solid songwriting chops. In the latter stages of her career she has focused on grander production with strong, emotive vocals. On Late December, she further pursues the path of over-the-top vocals. It is a shame, really, because her voice is so beautiful. Musically, she has chosen to move towards overly-dramatic arrangement to compliment her voice. While it isn't fair to expect an artist to remain the enchanting presence in a cowgirl dress as she was 20 years ago, her move towards a more theatrical presentation is disappointing. (Cooking Vinyl)

ROY DAVIS

Grey Town
Davis writes simple tales of broken-hearts and big dreams. While he sound is closer to Ryan Adams or Clem Snide`s Eef Barzelay, Davis cites The Rolling Stones, Adams, The Drive-By Truckers and Nirvana as major influences. You can hear that in his emotional honesty of his songs. The album stays on a low musical country/folk simmer, forcing you to feel the words and his emotional turmoil. Just 21, Davis showcases a songwriting talent and a weariness beyond his years. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (self-released)

MARK HUFF

Gravity (EP)
It was his interest in his older bothers record collection that brought him to The Rolling Stones, Muddy Waters and T.Rex. Several decades - and several releases - later one can still see how these early influences continue to inform his music; as well as his "road-ready" roots music background. Recent exposure as an opening act for Allison Moorer piqued the interest of Moorer`s guitar player, Adam Landry, who offered to produce the 5 songs on Gravity, and the rest for his future full-length release. These tracks feature name worthy folks such as Bucky Baxter (Bob Dylan, Ryan Adams, Steve Earle) on guitar, Dan Baird (Georgia Satellites) on bass and guitar, and Brad Pemberton (Ryan Adams) drums. Landry adds a fair share guitar and backing vocals on this powerful, well-crafted mix that finds Morrer chiming in on the roots rocker "In The Dark". Somebody give this guy a record deal! IDAHO FALLS

EP/LP (Home/Campfire)
The Idaho Falls present the appropriately title EP/LP. While not actually from Idaho - songwriter/guitarist Raymond Richards hails from the Gem State - this L.A.-based cosmic country sextet do manage to evoke a bit of the ol` "home-on-the-range" and "under-a-big-sky" spirit of their namesake`s region. And while it might be easy to interject Burrito/Gram/Byrd references here, it would only be fair, and more fitting, to cite the great "vibe" in the sky that actually inspires California country of this nature. The Idaho Falls are tuned into it, that`s for sure. This 18 song collection is not only delightful but lovingly authentic, with its organic late `60s/early `70s sound. The alternating vocals and harmonies of guitarist Heather Goldberg and Richards are easy and honest, as is the sweeping, traditionally-informed country rock that supports them. Their music is upbeat and well crafted, with plenty of slide and pedal steel guitar action, by way of songwriting contributor Greg Vincent. -- Robinson, Miles Of Music (self-released)

OFFRAMPS

Hate It When You Are Right
Could `Hate It When You Are Right` by The Offramps be the best Replacements album in 20 years? Detroit`s The Offramps have made the the successor to the `Mats "Please To Meet Me" that "All Shook Down" wasn`t. No band can live up to the lofty expectation of being the next Replacements, but The Offramps do an exceptionally good job of capturing the loose, loud roots-pop of Minnesota`s favorite band that no one has ever heard of. The Offramps have taken the ground work laid by luminaries The Replacements , Cheap Trick, and Joan Jett and done it right. New ground is not being broken here, but the fertile sound from an era has been recaptured without sounding retro. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (Deluxe)

It is from those two locations that Shadows Rise was conceived and constructed, with neither individual having met! Such is the modern age. Yet this cyber-meeting of minds, for all of it`s web traveling, has brought about an atmospheric and organic gallery of moody and rootsy vignettes. With Kersten`s acoustic and vocal performance at the center - a spacious offering of tender and somber alt. country and folk - Kraft, for the most part, offers conservative, well considered shadings of electric guitar, keys, bass, drums, mandolin, banjo, harmonica and even some vocals. The album swells and subsides much like dappled sunlight on a calm cloudy day, with only one track achieving a full band arrangement - "Can`t Be Wrong", a mid-tempo slice of Americana, rich with swirling Hammond tones, recalling Hollywood Town Hall-era Jayhawks. The tracks surrounding this mid-set peak can be likened to the broody yet dulcet musings of similar artists like Jason Molina, Will Johnson and Sam Beam. -- Robinson, Miles Of Music (self-produced)

Arthur "Big Guy" Carlson tries to run a failing Cincinnati radio station owned by his "tough as nails" mother. His own incompetence is overshadowed by the strange employees that work at the station. With the help of saner employees such as Bailey Quarters; the rather shy journalism major; Jennifer Marlowe, the beautiful receptionist who is the very opposite of a stereotypical "Dumb Blonde" and Andy Travis; the studly program director, Carlson tries gimmick after crazy gimmick to bring money into the station and make it a success. ARCTIC MONKEYS

What's Happening Around the MOM Offices

This week you will read about a request for a fashion statement, the hidden delivery spot, and taboo names.

EARLIER THIS WEEK YOUR JESTER received an e-mail from a music business peer titled "The Orange & Maroon Effect." The e-mail is asking Virginia Tech alums (and all other interested parties) to wear clothing that is either burnt orange or Chicago maroon in tribute to the innocent lives lost earlier this week at the school shooting.

It will probably not occur to most people that the color choices are a statement of solidarity. This isn't populist stuff like tying a yellow ribbon 'round the ol oak tree (a song about an ex-con coming home that was turned into a statement of patriotism). But, that doesn't really matter. If you have something orange or maroon, throw it on tomorrow remembering, just for a moment.

A REGULAR CALLED EARLIER this week to place an order. At then end he asked how the package was going to ship. Your Jester told him US mail. He says, "Good, because the UPS driver usually leaves my packages in the front seat of my car because they aren't allowed to just leave them on the stoop anymore." So, Your Jester asked, "He leaves the package in your car?" Customer replies, "Well, he used to just leave it inside the house but they can't do that anymore either."

Your Jester sputtered, "He used to just come inside?" The suburbs of LA aren't like the hard streets of New York, but, for as long as I can remember, we've always locked our doors. Customer replies, "Well, even here in Minnesota we're get a little crime so we've had to start locking our door so he can't just come inside anymore." The next best thing is the car, which, apparently, remains unlocked.

WHEN THE QUEEN AND YOUR JESTER sit down every week to work on this missive, we'll put a disc on to start the process. Inevitably, the first question asked is, "Who does this sound like?" That's how I work. I need to know who an artist reminds me of and then I can throw together 50 words on the subject.

Recently we were working on a release when the question came up. The Queen says, "It reminds me of Bread, but we can't use that." She, of course, was right. It did remind us of Bread and no, our holier-than-though elitist music snobbiness wouldn't let us use a reference of the once very popular and un-hip Bread even if it was accurate!

We admit our frailties so we can move forward, I guess. Several weeks back America released a new album. Now, Your Jester has a very soft spot for the band. America means 6th grade Friday afternoon dances at Dearborn Elementary School because "A Horse With No Name" was really popular then. Hearing that song takes me back to a more gentle time (even if reality was the country was in an un-winnable war, gas prices were skyrocketing, our government leaders were power hungry and corrupt... hey...).

But, a new America album... well, that has to suck, right? So, we passed it by. Then a week after it came out we find a review that praises the album (hello Peter from No Depression!) and mentions all of the "good" musicians that guested (Ryan Adams, Adam Schlesinger, Jim James and so forth). Yep, my opinion of it swung immediately....because the cool kids liked it. And, in a flash I was transported right back to 6th grade.

Now, this doesn't mean we'll use America or Bread as reference points because they aren't, you know, cool, but the secret is out.

Until next week,

The Queen, Your Jester, and The Mangler
