MUDCRUTCH
Mudcrutch
The
Quarrymen of Gainesville? In a nutshell, that's Mudcrutch, the band Tom Petty
played in before forming the Heartbreakers. And while John Lennon and Paul McCartney
never got around to resurrecting the Quarrymen, their first band, after the Beatles
exploded, Petty and his long-ago mates -- guitarist Tom Leadon and drummer Randall
Marsh along with future Heartbreakers keyboardist Benmont Tench and guitarist
Mike Campbell -- have reunited to put out the debut album they never got to make
originally. (more

This
is an audio/video chronicle of the first ever RCPM VivaCast; a revolutionary reality-recording
experiment where the band and crew set up a studio in a seaside home in Rocky
Point, Mexico and broadcasting daily audio and video episodes to thousands of
homes. The goal was to create and share, from inspiration to the final mix, 8
songs in 8 days. Also on this album is Maana, a fun little ditty that the fans
asked the band to include as well as Mxicosis and Captain Suburbia which are available
for the first time on a cd. MORE

EARLE Live At Austin Texas November 12, 2000
When
Steve Earle stepped onto the Austin City Limits stage on November 12, 2000, it
had been 14 years since his first appearance in 1986. In between it must have
seemed like he had lived several lifetimes. A bout with drug addiction sidetracked
him in the early 90's, but by 1994 he was recovered and more ornery and prolific
than ever. In fact, in the years since, he released five albums, including his
latest at the time of this recording, Transcendental Blues. Of the record, Rolling
Stone wrote, These songs weave threads that bind Ireland and the American south,
rockabilly and the Beatles, folk music and muscular rock and roll. (track

"Paperboy" Reed, a Boston-via-Delta South soul singer who, with his
band the True Loves, conquered both street corners and punk clubs with a mix of
grooved-out rave-ups and slow-burning ballads. He draws his sound from Motown
and Stax Records On his Roll With You, "Paperboy" delivers classic soul
and horn-heavy R&B soaked with the blues of Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf.
"Southern music is really where it's at for me and it's really defined my

GRIFFIN
HOUSE Flying Upside Down
In
this day and age, Singer-Songwriters are often compared to other similar artists
from both past and present. For Nashville-based performer Griffin House the chief
comparison seems to be Josh Ritter or Ryan Adams. Griffin's latest offering, Flying
Upside Down opens with the track 'Better Than Love' and the opening notes and
lyrics for that cut is drenched with the sound of Adams. House does make clear
that he is his own artist however. On this album, House never quite reaches the
highs of Adams best works (think Heartbreaker-era), but he also never sinks to
the meandering, moody and often times self-indulgent lows of Adams past either
(think 29). . . The album's star track is 'When the Time is Right'. This cut offers
simplicity, but doesnt let that stand in the way of setting an atmospheric, wistful
and yearning vibe. All in all, Flying Upside Down succeeds much in the way a folk
record that isn't attempting to alter the musical landscape should. House establishes
a folky-pop presence and displays the chops that will likely show a great deal
of development over the next couple of albums. -- twangville.com

ECHO
& THE BUNNYMEN Breaking The Back Of Love
Echo
& the Bunnymen's dark, swirling fusion of gloomy post-punk and Doors-inspired
psychedelia brought the group a basketful of British hits throughout the '80s,
while attracting a sizeable cult following in the United States. Breaking The
Back Of Love is a celebration of their nearly 25 years together capturing the
group' s most brilliant moments. Lead singer McCulloch's signature swagger still
captures the urgency and poetry of Jim Morrison while Sergeant, whose musicianship
has improved vastly over the years, shines throughout the set. An essential collection
for those who have witnessed the splendor of Echo live and a needed document of
their great repertoire. (Great American Music) MORE

ROBERT FORSTER Evangelist
Robert
Forster's first album in 11 years, The Evangelist finds the Go-Betweens co-founder
as winsome and haunting as ever. Nearly two years after the death of Grant McLennan,
his fellow Go-Between and writing partner of 30 years, Forster has produced an
album that is both wildly progressive and haunted by the ghost of his artistic
soul mate. "Demon Days," co-written with McLennan shortly before he
died, is an all too telling spine tingling journey into oblivion. "Pandanus"
and "Did She Overtake You?" are lively juggernauts that delightfully
reprise the rhythmic tensions of Spring Hill Fair. "The Evangelist"
is a wistful cousin to "He Lives My Life" (from The Friends of Rachel
Worth) and "From Ghost Town" is a deeply personal and poignant farewell
to a lost brother. Throughout, The Evangelist is a masterpiece of honesty and
compassion. (Yep Roc) MORE

HAYDEN In Field &
Town
'..[T]the
guy makes merciless stabs of self-parody. 'I don't lock myself in a room and refuse
to talk to my girlfriend for weeks at a time,' Hayden says. 'I'm definitely not
a sort of hermit, weirdo character. I'm more the kind of guy who spends most of
his day wasting time and complaining about things,' he says, muffling a giggle.
'I have long, long breakfasts, you know, from like noon until two at least, then
I start complaining.' There is some truth to the mythology; over the course of
his five stripped-back albums, his music and method took on a solitary shape.
Recorded in Desser's studio and in woods north of Toronto, In Field and Town embodies
this small-scale sensibility. Yearning with the tender, minor-key minimalism of
2001's Skyscraper National Park and the glowing acoustic arrangements of 2004's
Elk-Lake Serenade, the album pitches his oddly personal whimseys against an intimate
but complete instrumental backdrop. The pealing horns and tumbling pop rhythms
of Where and When, wrangling guitars and piano of Did I Wake Up Beside You? are
fine examples. . . But it's the wonderfully arranged Lonely Security Guard, an
oddly narrated ode to a neighbourhood security guard told from the perspective
of a would-be thief, which typifies his peculiar songwriting charms. "I just
really enjoy coming up with a story that has a beginning, a middle and an end,"
he says. It's just that sometimes it's an end that you're not expecting. Like
this super friendly-looking security guard being a really tough guy,' he laughs.
'I had a huge smile on my face when I came up with that.''-- Dan Rule, theage.com

CARLY SIMON This Kind
Of Love
This
Kind of Love ranks among Simon's most personal albums as well as one of her most
stylistically diverse excursions with songs ranging from gorgeous melodies to
driving rhythms. The CD is co-produced by Simon, Frank Filipetti and Jimmy Webb
who also wrote or co-wrote most of the arrangements. Filipetti worked his talent
as the engineer as well as producer. The three first teamed up for Film Noir,
Simon's album of standards that Webb produced in 1997. On This Kind of Love, Simon
delivers 10 of her own songs (some of which she co-wrote), including the gently
swaying title love song, the funky castigation of conniving celebrity-identity
thieves ("People Say A Lot"), the catchy "How Could You Ever Forget"
(one of Simon's personal favorites), the r&b-vibed "So Many People,"
the lyrical gem, "Sangre Dolce," and a waltz-time homage to her close
friend, the humor columnist Art Buchwald, who passed in January 2007 ("Too
Soon to Say Goodbye"). MORE

ERIC MATTHEWS
Imagination
From
his days in the baroque-pop combo Cardinal to his excellent cover of Elliott Smith's
"Needle In The Hay," Eric Matthews has demonstrated a consistent genius
for producing great arrangements and sonic frills from others' solid templates-but
not so much with his solo songs. On The Imagination Stage, he once again tries
to save "a music half-blind and afraid to fly," per the title track,
from itself. On "Her Life," a typically immaculate brass-trio-vs.-pipe-organ
breakdown is more arresting than the surrounding song. More often, he gets the
song/arrangement mix right, as on "Little 18," with its pleasingly XTC-esque
basic piano chords and yelping vocals. The results can bleed into each other,
but Matthews neglects melody for instrumentation less than he once did. -- Vadim

The fans and music writers have made comparisons to this band with The Clash,
Springsteen, Fugazi and Nick Cave. 'The Constantines maintain a feverishly partisan
dedication to the wild delirium of rock n' roll...air punching anthemic.' -- NME MORE

FAIRPORT
CONVENTION Meet On The Ledge
Titled
for one of Fairport s best loved classics, Meet On The Ledge was recorded on their
35th Anniversary tour (2002) in Canterbury, England. The Nicol/Pegg/Sanders/Leslie/Conway
lineup sparkles, and the pace is frequently relentless. Paramount here is the
theme from MASH, in its ''Suicide Is Painless'' disguise, which spirals into a
delirious ''Matty Groves'' (via a taste of ''End of a Holiday''), to become one
of those irresistible Fairport marathons, coming in at more than 12 minutes of
strong, stomping good fun. The band s own history is retold through such classics
as a sprightly ''Meet on the Ledge,'' a driving ''Walk Awhile'' and a triumphant
''Rosie,'' and in a world of Fairport live albums to last most of you a lifetime,
this is one of the ones that ensures that you'll keep listening for more. On their
