IT'S
A CRACKER! SHAWN BYRNE But I Digress We
felt this record suffered from "short attention span theater" because
we used the phrase Christian Country to describe it and that might have turned
off a lot of folks. Let me scale that back and refer to it as more of a spiritual
record. A very good spiritual record. A very good record.
Michael
McCall wrote in The Nashville Scene, "Byrne takes an expansive view on the
possibilities of roots music." That is, Byrne has made a terrific spiritual
country record. He seamlessly incorporates a broad range of musical flavors into
this very satisfying (and spiritually uplifting) release. Shawn Byrne migrated
from Boston (and from the band The Kickbacks) to Nashville, and earned his way
as a demo singer and songwriter. His version of his song "Ol' Cook Pot",
the lead track on the Duhks album "Migrations," is included here. --

A CRACKER! HAUNT As Blue As Your Dying Eyes Matthew
Hebert's (ex-Ware River Club) new project continues the splendor of his previous
efforts. Hebert's ragged voice and this Northampton, MA band, featuring members
of the Scud Mountain Boys, combine to play an elegant country-rock. The result
is Hebert's biting, confessional lyrics are pushed out front. Melodic and immediate,
it is obvious from first listen that the band has created a terrific record for
those that are fans of the melancholy Replacements sound. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles

A CRACKER! MARK ZUBIA Parts of Yesterday Mark
Zubia steps out of the shadow of his rock band day job -- guitarist for the Pistoleros,
on his solo debut. Zubia chose to write in a variety of Americana styles instead
of limiting himself to the more straight-ahead rock of his other band. Country,
it's cousin honky-tonk, folk and pop styles are used as backing for Zubia's stories
of lost love, and freedom from broken hearts. His bluesy voice provides a gentle
balance to the rich textures behind him. Fans of the Pistoleros will want to check
this out to see what has been hiding in the shadows. Fans of confessional bluesy-roots
rock will want to give it a listen because Zubia has a sensitivity that makes
you believe he lived all of these songs. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (El Rey) REVIEW

A CRACKER! LONG WAY AROUND: One Badass Year With Two Cow Garage DVD
This
feature length documentary follows Columbus, Ohio rock band Two Cow Garage as
they record, release and tour behind their second album entitled `The Wall Against
Our Back.` Incorporating interviews, studio footage, live performances, touring
life and day job dues, the film presents the reality of the fabled `rock and roll
life` as it is for most bands in the indie music world: long drives, small audiences,
bad food, loud guitars. . . too many smokes, not enough cash, annoying harp players.
. . the hope of breaking even, the frustration of breaking down. . . doubt, passion,
sleep deprivation and the determination to keep rockin' through it all.
Shot
on digital video during the course of one year and produced on a tiny budget,
`The Long Way Around` celebrates the D.I.Y. ethos in both its content and creation.
The film takes the spirit of the 80's underground puck documentary `Another State
of Mind` and combines it with the style of more recent rock docs like `Year of
The Horse` and `Westway To The World.` The result is an unglamorized portrait
of a young band struggling to make its mark. . .one album at a time. . . one
gig at a time. . . one mile at a time. REVIEW

been a while since the last offering from Jeff Tweedy and Co, but three years
of slavering from fans is about to be rewarded with this seventh studio album.
And, boy, was it worth the wait. Though Wilco are known as purveyors of alt country

soulful acoustic folk, jazzy blues, country skank and pumping rock. Tweedy has
the vocal range of three people, from country lilt to blues ache to folk sweetness
- all this often in the space of one song. And what songs they are...Simple and
soothing, yet rich and rewarding, this is an album you unknowingly yearn for,

THE AVETT BROTHERS Emotionalism
With
their "old weird Americana filtered through the mind of a Led Zep fan, sleek
Everly Brothers roots-pop and Violent Femmes-style folk-punk" (Harp), The
Avett Brothers are taking roots music in an entirely new direction on the 'Emotionalism'.
'Emotionalism,' is concept album mirroring the thought that, in this era, displays
of emotion are all too rare. Their 6th album is also a sonic departure, blending
analog synth soundscapes with old-time instruments. "The sound in the speakers
is finally the same as the sound in our minds," says Seth Avett, the singer
and guitarist who plays a high-hat at the same time. "I am proud for its
execution, for its aesthetic, its resolve. Our voices sound like they do in the
living room." (Ramseur Records) MORE

elegant and poignant songwriting extends much further than the Lone Star State
border. Heralded by Billboard Magazine as "one of the best of a new breed
of singer-songwriters in Texas and beyond," Robison's work has garnered fans
from all over who appreciate his reputation for writing emotionally complex songs
- the kind of songs that send mainstream country stars like Garth Brooks, Tim
McGraw, the Dixie Chicks and Lee Ann Womack running to the studio. Robison has
penned numerous Number 1 and Top 10 hits, including "Travelin' Soldier"
by the Dixie Chicks, "Angry All The Time" by Tim McGraw with Faith Hill,

AMY LAVERE
Anchors & Anvils
"On
her sophomore release, singer/bassist Amy LaVere doesn't mess around. Beginning
with producer Jim Dickinson (Dylan, Big Star, Stones), she's assembled a top-notch
cast that includes guitarist Jimbo Mathus, steel guitarist Chris Scruggs and violinist/mandolinist
Tommy Burroughs. LaVere -- who made her acting debut portraying Wanda Jackson
in the 2005 Johnny Cash bio "Walk the Line" -- has a bag that ranges
from the haunting opener, "Killing Him," and the gypsy-styled "That
Beat" to the slow and brassy country-tinged confessional "Pointless
Drinking," the Tex-Mex "Overcome" and the Dan Hicks-sounding "Time
is a Train." While the songs are interesting, they mainly serve as vehicles
for LaVere. With a childish wisp, she's, by turns, coy, playful and sexy -- sometimes,
as on "Washing Machine," all at once." --Michael Lipton, Charleston

THE SANDINISTA
PROJECT Various Sandinista!,
recorded by The Clash in 1980, was one of the most ambitious records in the history
of rock 'n' roll. According to one of its biggest fans, author and journalist
Jimmy Guterman, "It wasn't necessarily their best record, their best-selling
record, or even their most enjoyable record, but it's an exciting, sprawling mess
that I return to constantly." Guterman liked it so much, in fact, that he
took it upon himself to amass a tribute as ambitious as the album itself - 36
tracks by nearly as many different artists. 00:02:59 - a label named after a lyric
from the Sandinista! song "Hitsville U.K." - has released The Sandinista!

Trading
Twilight For Daylight is a collection of shimmeringly lovely yet wildly contrasting
shades of the pop song experience. Densely layered melodies are draped with velvety
chimes, stately piano, luxurient keyboard string flourishes and smartly counterpointed
electric and acoustic guitars. The songs' very point often seems to suggest the
rich emotional textures of a daydream afternoon, just as sunshine gently dims
into the dark. The sensual fullness of the sound is like soaking in a bath of
warm frequencies, and makes you come back again and again. MORE

IAN HUNTER
Shrunken Heads
As
the leader of seminal seventies band Mott the Hoople, Ian Hunter ripped straight
through the hypocrisy and broken ideals of the hippie generation, cutting a jagged
swath through popular music and paving the way for the punk rock revolution. Hunter's
interpretation of the David Bowie-penned classic 'All the Young Dudes' made him
an icon and further work with legendary Bowie guitarist Mick Ronson cemented his
position as underground rock 'n' roll royalty. After Mott the Hoople's final break-up
in 1974, Ian Hunter pressed on as a solo artist releasing 11 solo albums to date.
Now, with Shrunken Heads, the man that has influenced bands from The Clash to
Oasis is still affecting today's most groundbreaking artists (Jeff Tweedy collaborates
on three tracks), recording with his beloved band (Soozie Tyrell [E Street Band]
Graham Maby [Joe Jackson] among other luminary sidemen) and offering characteristically
wry commentary on today's political climate. (Yep Roc) MORE

LEGENDARY SHACKSHAKERS
Lower Broad Lo-Fi
Downtown
Nashville, just off the dirty Cumberland River, is a wayward home for junkies,
poets, homeless buskers, and starving musicians. In the watering holes that line
the neon-studded Broadway Street, music is played twenty-four hours a day by the
hardest, tightest, hungriest gentlemen. Each a master at his trade, they fight
and wrestle with the sounds of an ever-changing world, hoping to someday master
the blues and perform honky tonk ballads like the gone-but-not-forgotten country
angels of old. For years there was one band that shone brighter than the rest:
Th' Legendary Shack Shakers. As time has passed, the lineup has changed and the
band's fan base has grown worldwide, but the quartet captured here was the best,
sharpest group of villains to ever play under the name. This is a recording dating
back to the year 2000, when they were unknown and fighting to live. (Arkam Records) MORE

The song cycle is so strong on this collection that Toronto Star journalist John
Sakamoto made two tracks his top pick in his Anti-Hit-List column, ""#1.
'Surrender' & 'Miss Idaho'- Unable to choose between these two songs from
the Vancouver band's follow-up to the stunning Dust Bowl Revival, We finally gave
up and picked both of them. The former is an unlikely loping country re-make of
Cheap Tricks's signature tune; the latter is a melancholy, Neil Young-ish original
that is reminiscent of the sound that Jay Farrar has refined both on his own and
with Son Volt, Wilco, and Uncle Tupelo. 'Miss Idaho' certainly holds its own with
anything those two gentlemen have done in years." Shain Shapiro wrote in
View Magazine, ". . . Ox has returned with American Lo-Fi, a set that is
even better than Dust Bowl Revival. A drunken, impressively personal expose in
song -- one that shakes the demons in all of us. Brooding, bacchanalian, repressively
sweet, good natured and smart, Ox has once again reached the acme in 'Canadiana'."
All, told, a fantastic collection of roots pop. (weewerk) REVIEW

IT'S
A CRACKER! DAVID PICCO Saturday Night Sunday Morning
Canada`s David Picco, rightfully, gets lumped in with Steve Earle, Jay Farrar,
and Jeff Tweedy. His way with melody, lyrics, and Saturday Night, Sunday Morning`s
overall sound puts him squarely in that place where Uncle Tupelo ended is all:
Anodyne. Producer by Don Kerr (Ron Sexsmith) captures that place where melancholy
and exuberance meet. Picco`s sound might feel derivative of his well accomplished
predecessors, but it is both not back company to keep and shows him as an artist
with something to say. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (Mag Wheel) REVIEW

IT'S
A CRACKER! THRIFT STORE COWBOYS Lay Low While Crawling or Creeping
Lubbock-based Thrift Store Cowboys capture the shimmering, country-influenced
soundtrack sound of the Southwest. Produced by Craig Schumacher at Wavelab Studios
in Tucson,TSC`s 2006 release is a beautifully intoxicating mix. A gypsy-like violin,
haunting pedal steel and the occasional toy piano provide texture for this dark,
thoughtful and very talented band. It`s December release will preclude it from
making year-end best of lists, which is a shame, as it`s quality exceeds nearly
every small label album of the year. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (self-released)

LPS | CLIENTELE
Good Save the Clientelle ** LP **
On
their third full-length, The Clientele are setting free their inner Monkees with
a lovely blend of Big Star twisted powerpop, Byrdsian country achin', and flashes
of The Beatles at their most joyful and upbeat. The ghosts, half-light, and uncertainties
remain, but included in this music is a newfound optimism. With the addition of
piano and violin, the band paints from a broader palette, adding splashes of pedal
steel and slide guitar to their already lush songs. Their most accomplished and
triumphant record. Recorded in Nashville with Mark Nevers (Lambchop, Bonnie "Prince"
Billy, Calexico, Silver Jews). (Merge Records) MORE

CULT CARGO: GRAND BAHAMA GOOMBAY
Various ** LP **
The
second in our series of exploration of the pan-American funk experience, Cult
Cargo: Gran Bahama Goombay is a deep overview of Funky Nassau's redheaded sister
city, Freeport, GBI. From 1969-1976, Frank Penn's GBI studio and label cranked
out a dozen LPs and twice as many singles infected with the Miami sounds drifting
in over the 100 mile strait. The catalog is a fruity blend of rake and scrape,
bush, junkanoo, calypso, reggae, and of course, goombay, all with a twist of American
soul. The deluxe 2LP set features a bonus track and a gorgeous pullout sleeve
chronicling the island's LP and 45 history. (Numero) MORE

GREAT NORTHERN Trading
Twilight For Daylight ** LP ** Trading
Twilight For Daylight is a collection of shimmeringly lovely yet wildly contrasting
shades of the pop song experience. Densely layered melodies are draped with velvety
chimes, stately piano, luxurient keyboard string flourishes and smartly counterpointed
electric and acoustic guitars. The songs' very point often seems to suggest the
rich emotional textures of a daydream afternoon, just as sunshine gently dims
into the dark. The sensual fullness of the sound is like soaking in a bath of
warm frequencies, and makes you come back again and again. MORE

WILCO Sky
Blue Sky ** LP ** "It's
been a while since the last offering from Jeff Tweedy and Co, but three years
of slavering from fans is about to be rewarded with this seventh studio album.
And, boy, was it worth the wait. Though Wilco are known as purveyors of alt country
rock, Sky Blue Sky is an astounding demonstration of their ability to move between
soulful acoustic folk, jazzy blues, country skank and pumping rock. Tweedy has
the vocal range of three people, from country lilt to blues ache to folk sweetness
- all this often in the space of one song. And what songs they are...Simple and
soothing, yet rich and rewarding, this is an album you unknowingly yearn for,
like a cool hand on a hot forehead. A great album from a band in their prime.

What's
Happening Around the MOM Offices | This
week you will read about the smoke-filled back room of deal making, thieves of
the animal kingdom, springtime in Yukon in the morning, and day jobs.
THE
BIG EVENT AROUND MOM CENTRAL WAS this week's brush fire in Griffith Park. The
fire threatened amongst other things: The Los Angeles Zoo, The Merry-Go-Round
(which has been there since the 1930s), the Griffith Park Observatory (famous
fight scene from Rebel Without A Cause was filmed there), and The Greek Theater
(Neil Diamond's "Hot August Night" was recorded there many years ago). Obviously,
this kind of fire brings out all of the local politicians, power brokers and news
media.
The
local pols gave interviews with anyone that would listen discussing the tragedy
(even though no human lives nor structures were lost). The news media obligingly
interviewed them. Between speaking to dignitaries, local news had to fill with
reports from the scene even no new news was available.
The
time-filling solution was to interview the looky-loos who are standing on the
street watching the fire burn. You got your cross section of displaced locals
who couldn't get back to their houses, those that thought they were seeing history
happen, those that seemed to want only to be on camera and, most importantly,
a slice of what can only be called "Los Angeles culture."
The
locals were commenting about the generosity of neighbors. In Los Angeles, you
might spends years living next door to someone with whom you have a "waving"
relationship. "Hi, Greg." "Hi, Jeff." That's it.
In
times of disaster, as happened following the 1994 Northridge earthquake, neighbor
steps up and helps neighbor with whatever can be shared. I'm sure this happens
elsewhere. I know it happens here.
Locals
are telling the news reporters about how great everyone has been. The report works
his way through the crowd finding an older gentleman. "Sir, what brings you
here today?" The older gentleman replies, "I'm here to help. I brought
flashlights and sushi."
Someone
please tell me if there is another city anywhere in the world where the care package
for a disaster is going to be flashlights and sushi. Sometimes I love this city.
IN
THE OLD DAYS THE DAILY ACTIVITIES OF the office used to revolve around getting
lunch to the point where rules had to be implemented to keep the conversation
from starting too early in the day. Now, lunch is an after-thought. Something
to be thrown together and scarfed down in between other responsibilities.
Yesterday
Your Jester was throwing together a leftover hamburger for a quick bite. The burger
went on a plate into the microwave. The bun went into the toaster oven. Soda was
poured.
After
the bun was done toasting, Your Jester took put it on a plate and applied condiments
(ketchup and mayo, if you must know). Then nature called.
There
was a thought process here. A choice was made to leave the hamburger sitting in
the microwave for the moment because dogs don't have thumbs. The bun would be
vulnerable for a minute or so but it should be ok.
Your
Jester came back into the kitchen and did a Scooby-Do double take. Wha? One of
the bun halves is missing! The culprit was obvious. Merle's too small to steal
from the counter. Miles is too old to get his front paws up there. So, where is
Satchel hiding?
He
came around the corner with the entire bun shoved in his mouth, not unlike a child
who has stuffed too many cookies into his cheeks. Your Jester started laughing
because the site was ridiculous.
Trying
to be a calm pack leader, I got Satchel and tried to take the bun out of his mouth.
This dog is a slobberer. All that was there, as he quickly tried to swallow before
I could get to him, was a mush of wet bread. Nothing to salvage, obviously. Not
that Your Jester would have eaten the bun after it had been in the dog's mouth,
but there was principle involved.
Defeated
(and still laughing) Your Jester set Satchel free to finish his purloined snack.
The other two got biscuits. Satchel didn't really understand why the other two
got treats and he didn't because dog treats are a democracy... socialism even.
Despite
that bad behavior -- he's a Lab, he thinks with his stomach -- the dogs are welcome
with me at the office any day, even if I have to eat a hamburger with only 1/2
a bun.
"WHAT
PASSES FOR SPRING IN THE YUKON?" Your Jester missed his calling as a weather
man because I have to know. A customer who lives way up there in the Great White
North, you hoser, called. I saw he lived in the Yukon province, So I had to know
how far up was it and how warm it was. Even though I was schvitzing in misery
because of our unseasonably hot weather, I still saw a chance to feel better about
my predicament because I expected him to tell me that the weather was still lousy
with snow and frozen tundra.
This
is on a day where Los Angeles is baking in the mid-to-high '90s with humidity
under 10% leading to the previously mentioned brush fire.
"Well,
eh, we're even with Alaska, eh, so we're pretty far north, eh. Sure, spring
has arrived. It is about 60 here today, eh. Just a beautiful day." It was
impossible to argue with that logic given the hot wind -- did I mention the gusts
of 20 mph that moved the fire along? -- and overall unpleasant weather we were
having. 60 is parka weather here. Your Jester would have gladly broken out the
parka because it is always easier to get warm than cool off.
AS
THE MUSIC BUSINESS DEMOCRATIZES because of the cultural influence of the web,
it seems obvious that surviving as musician just became a little harder. Here's
the logic. The major labels, for all of their faults, served as "art patrons"
for a small group of musicians. Sure, you can argue that folks signed to a major
label over the last several years were least deserving of that kind of financial
support because, and you will likely agree, most of them had little artistic ambition. They
want to be stars. Nonetheless, that gravy train is drying up as the majors figure
out how to retrench and survive this sea change.
Earlier
this week Your Jester was talking to Allen from The Rust Kings. We have a long
relationship with them. The band keeps plugging away. I asked Allen how he supported
himself... what was his day job.He said proudly, "I'm a musician. I decided
I could make the same little money working a job I hated so why not give being
a musician a shot." I asked if he had given himself a deadline. If you look
back at our history there are lots of bands where we carried three albums and
then they hung it up, deciding to build a more stable career.
Allen
said, "My goal is to play music and make my living at it for the rest of
my life. I'll never be a 'star' in the traditional sense of the word, but I plan
on doing this for the next 25 years."
Allen
lives a frugal life in West Virginia, playing excellent acoustic music. This music
has survived generations in that part of the country and will likely survive generations
more so he has a shot to keep doing this for a very long time.
We
wish him the best of luck. This is the kind of patronage we can offer. The Rust
Kings do it well, and do it the right way.
Until
next week,

Queen, Your Jester, and The Mangler | |
