RICHARD THOMPSON
Sweet Warrior
Literate rocker Richard Thompson's new album, Sweet Warrior, is a return to his classic electric sound, his first plugged-in album since 2003's The Old Kit Bag. Filled with 14 songs of stories of loss and betrayal, the album also holds one of Thompson's most overtly political songs to date, "Dad's Gonna Kill Me," told from the perspective of a nervous young soldier stationed in Baghdad (abbreviated as "Dad" in the song). Richard Thompson is a consummate singer, songwriter, and guitarist. His career stretches back to the late '60s, when he was a founding member of the British folk-rock Fairport Convention. In the late '70s, with his then-wife, Linda, he recorded Shoot Out the Lights, which regularly makes critics' lists of the top ten records of all time. In the '90s, he experienced another career renaissance with the album Rumor & Sigh and he remains an elder-statesman of alternative rock.(Shout! Factory)

DIANA JONES
My Rememberance Of You
Diana Jones brings a deeply poetic lyric to the fore of each of her smartly composed country-folk tunes on My Remembrance Of You, the debut release for NewSong Recordings, whose Mountain Stage broadcasts and festivals have been a key proving ground for Jones. Strong Tennessee roots can be heard in her voice and at the core of her writing too; her captivating and mature tone has a timeless quality yet bears contemporary sophistication in its melody. Love, loss and hope are time-honored themes which take on new depth from Jones' literate perspective. Providing her own accompaniment on acoustic guitar, she casts doleful and delicate tunes with humbling honesty, backed lightly with some fiddle, mandolin, spare drums and electric guitars -- Robinson, Miles Of Music (NewSong Recordings)

CARY BROTHERS
Who You Are
"Full of tales of love fulfilled or unrequited, the album showcases Brothers' gift for pleasing melodies and nuanced vocal delivery. In fact, his rich, clear voice may be his greatest asset. On the opening track, the dynamic "Jealousy," Brothers effortlessly climbs from a subdued verse to a soaring, impassioned chorus. On the delicate ballad "Honestly," his voice dovetails beautifully with piano and strings...Who You Are is a solid debut that proves Brothers is a talented artist deserving of a wider audience, and the brilliant moments of the first half of the album suggest he's capable of even stronger material in the future." -- Jason Middlekauff, blogcritics.org (Bluehammock)

JOHNETTE NAPOLITANO
Scarred
Scarred, Napolitano's staggering new solo album, finds the artist in an unconstrained, more cinematic phase of an already rich career. Living under Joshua Tree's endless sky and bazillion stars has inspired the songwriter to dig into emotional new territory. A pixie-dusting of triangle begins the opener that is `Amazing.` When that voice -- Johnette's cushiony, come-hither murmur -- enters, you're off on a gripping, melodic thrill ride. Johnette's soul-baring lyrics and commanding vocal skill reach torrid new heights, from the spellbinding, gospel-y wailings on `Poem for a Native` to the sweet, melodic charms of `Just Like Time.` The title song features Will Crewdson's swooping guitar that leaves the listener groggy with blessed relief. She finds an artistic compatriot in `My Diane,` a tender tribute to photographer Diane Arbus, who could `find the rose on every thorn.` Challenging, raw, gorgeous -- Scarred is filled with the most intimate songs the singer's ever shared with fans. JULIANA HATFIELD & FRANK SMITH

Sittin In A Tree
On Sittin' In A Tree..., Hatfield takes her distinctive, melodic voice and comes together with alt-country newcomers Frank Smith ("Boston's answer to the Band or Magnolia Electric Co." - The Boston Phoenix). Frank Smith, with their rootsy, bluesy, country rock bring Hatfield into territory she has never explored before. FRANK SMITH

Heavy Handed Peace & Love
Frank Smith is a band, not a man, and features former members of the Lot Six and Eyes Like Knives. They have a sound that is as vast as America. Like the country they come from, they reconcile countless would-be opposites as songs from the back porch country are driven straight into the noise of the city, simple folk tunes are given the most intricately complex arrangements, and the freedom of the music is constantly pulled back by the authority of the beat. All of this is masked by American deadpan at its finest in lyrics that are too simple to be simple.(Ye Olde Records)

The 'Just More Drugs' EP contains the track Just More Drugs from the My Life In Rooms album, plus two radio session tracks from Londons Resonance FM Glass Shrimp programme, recorded in May 2006 (Lets Go Driving and Just More Drugs). plus a Canadian radio CFRU Undertones session track of a Tindersticks cover 'Mistakes', and a new song 'Queen Jane.(Monotreme Records)

LEN PRICE 3

Chinese Burn
"Classic energetic 60's flavoured very English real-thing psychedelic garage pop -- doing it just right, sounding just so so right, sounding so authentic (and analogue) without ever being some retro parody/wannabe. Tight and frantic when they need to be and over-loaded with hooks and fine fine songs and needles in the red all the way...like the classic sound of early Who or The Kinks and just so so so right -- recommended." --Organ Magazine (Wicked Cool)

"One of the better British garage/beat/freakbeat revivalist bands I've heard (and I hear a lot of 'em), with a powerful, straightforward guitar-bass-drums approach and enough stylistic variety to keep things interesting..." Ken Barnes, usatoday.com (Wicked Cool)

RAY PRICE

Essential Ray Price
This double-CD best-of displays the Texas singer Ray Price at his early best. By the mid-1960s, Price had radically altered his approach, adopting a countrypolitan ballad style of singing, and leaving behind his honky-tonk roots, including his nasal, Hank Williams-influenced vocal style. However, Essential Ray Price presents the country legend in his exciting honky-tonk years, making the music that would later be embraced so widely by country music's 1980s New Traditionalists. Backed by Hank Williams's Drifting Cowboys, Price excels on classics such as "The Road of No Return," "Heartaches By the Number," and "Talk to Your Heart." Though Williams's influence is evident throughout, cuts such as "The Same Old Me" show the beginnings of Price's unique, innovative style. Track Listing Disc 1: Jealous Lies/If You're Ever Lonely Darling/Weary Blues/Talk To Your Heart/Release Me/I'll Be There (If You Ever Want Me)/Crazy Arms/You Done Me Wrong/Wasted Words/I've Got A New Heartache/My Shoes Keep Walking Back To You/Curtain In The Window/Invitation To The Blues/City Lights/Heartaches By The Number/Same Old Me/One More Time/I Wish I Could Fall In Love Today/Heart Over Mind/Soft Rain. Track Listing Disc 2: San Antonio Rose/I've Just Destroyed The World (I'm Living In)/Pride/Walk Me To The Door/Night Life/Make The World Go Away/Burning Memories/Other Woman, The (In My Life)/Don't You Ever Get Tired Of Hurting Me/Way To Survive/I'm Still Not Over You/I Let My Mind Wander/Danny Boy/She Wears My Ring/You Wouldn't Know Love/For The Good Times/I Won't Mention It Again/I'd Rather Be Sorry/You're The Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me/Faded Love.(Sony)

MEIC STEVENS

Outlander
In the popular music of Wales, Meic Stevens is the defining folk and rock singer of the past 40 years. Outlander, his sole English language release, came out in 1970 in the UK, and has never been widely available in the States until now. A diverse mix of folk, psych, and rock with a distinct Welsh flavor, Outlander has long been a sought after collector's item. What's Happening Around the MOM Offices

This week you will read about the new MOM reality show.

IT ALWAYS STARTS OUT AS A quick trip. A run to the post office, a trip to the mini-mart. Then one of us spots a stray dog. Time and other responsibilities are no longer an issue. The Mangler spent some time Thursday morning chasing down a lose huskie. On Tuesday, The Queen and Your Jester spent much of the afternoon chasing down two strays.

This is very old behavior for all three of us. Way back in time Your Jester was working in an independent record store at the far end of the valley.... way out in the suburbs. It was the coolest place in the entire west valley, but the competition was slim.

One evening Your Jester was closing up the shop. I was a big deal! I had keys to the store and the combo to the safe. How could the girls not flock to me? Somehow they managed to stay away despite Your Jester being an obvious catch! The store closed at 10:00, but by the time the drawers were counted out, the place tidied and vacuumed etc it was nearly 11:00.

A German Shepard appeared outside the door. He seemed friendly but lost. Most lost dogs are spooked. This guy was not. I went out. He came up and said hello.

Now, he's got no tags (always put tags on your pets!). It is too late to take him to the shelter (an idea I hated anyway) but I couldn't leave him on the street.

The store was right on Topanga Canyon. A night time of wandering up and down that boulevard was not going to end well.

An idea struck. I was opening the store in the morning. I could safely stash him inside until the morning. By then a better idea will have come along.

He gladly follows me in. I put out water for him. He stayed put while I set the alarm, closed the security gate and locked him in the for the night.

Following morning I came back to the store. No dog. A mystery! At least for a few minutes until the phone rang. It was Bob, one of the owners.

Bob, a large, friendly, uber music geek of a man who still runs a shop in town, says, "Jeff, did you lock a dog in the store last night?" I replied, "Uh, yes." Bob says, "Did you know the alarm has a motion sensor?" "No, Bob, I didn't," I feebly replied.

Bob went on, "I got a call from the alarm company in the middle of the night. I came to the store and found a dog staring at me from inside.
I opened the door, shooed him out and went to reset the alarm." I'm wondering where the dog went when Bob finished, "I stepped in poop in the store. Do me a favor and don't save anymore dogs."

Clearly, I learned nothing from that experience except to make sure the alarm isn't motion sensor-activated.

HAVE A SAFE and happy Memorial Day weekend. Your Jester will be around on Monday should you feel the need to call.

Until next week,

The Queen, Your Jester, and The Mangler
