A CRACKERS ! THE BEST OF THE BANDS YOU'VE NEVER HEARD! The "It's
A Cracker" concept is designed to encourage you to take musical chances.
We think all music should be returnable if you don't like it but most of our suppliers
don't agree with our opinion. So, we make available what we can hoping you will
consider trying music you are unsure of.

A CRACKER! DEAD ROCK WEST Honey and Salt A
mash of jangly power pop, twangy rock, and blending vocal harmonies along with
passionate hook-filled songwriting makes Dear Rock West's Honey & Salt a hard-charging
debut. Energetic, like their musical heroes X, the band defies easy categorization
as they pull from country rock as much as punk without bending to either. Southern
California-scene vets Frank Lee Drennen and Cindy Wasserman spark when they harmonize,
the music jumps out making this a fantastic debut. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music

A CRACKER! HALF KNOTS Color Them Blue St.
Louis scene veterans Half Knots return in 2007 with another collection of grand,
soulful, melancholic twang pop. Acoustically driven, but never without forward
momentum. The Half Knots have weaved together 11 tracks that carry forth the glorious
moments of the Jayhawks, while imbuing the tracks with a bit of St. Louis blues.
The accolades for their 2005 debut were warranted. Color Them Blue delivers as
a beautifully executed follow-up. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (self-released) REVIEW

A CRACKER! RICHARD MARCH Levee Road Jackson
Griffith, the erstwhile editor of Pulse magazine, wrote "[Richard March]
is at the forefront of Sacramento's recent explosion of first-rate Americana acts.
A homegrown John Hartford, with a firm grasp of American folk, bluegrass, and
the iconography of rolling boxcars, and Dylan-esque political jeremiads, March
at times sounds like a bluegrass Waylon." March's voice is full of soul,
reminiscent of a younger John Prine. as he lyrically searches for answers to life's
questions. His backing band provides muscular support. This is how folky- rock
is supposed to cover both kinds of music. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (self-released) REVIEW

The
Wyatts deliver a boozy romp through nitro-fueled honky tonk gathering "the
classic sadness of classic country." Stephen Siegel, from the Tucson Weekly,
wrote. "The Wyatts reach way back to when country and rock were virtually
the same thing -- their songs are country in their subject matter and style, but
strip away the slide guitar, twang, cowboy hats and boots, and at the core is
a good old-fashioned rock 'n' roll." -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (self-titled) REVIEW

CD is a blend of country rock and pop rock music delivered with a fresh flavor

PORTER
WAGONER Wagonmaster
In a world where the term is overused, Porter Wagoner is a true legend. He kicked
out hard-hitting honky-tonk anthems in the 50s; pioneered music television with
the amazingly long-running "Porter Wagoner Show" 1960-1980, where he
discovered Dolly Parton; started the Nudie suit craze; influenced everyone from
Johnny Cash and Dwight Yoakam to the Byrds & Gram Parsons; and recorded seminal
concept albums in the early 70s, populated with the lonely, addicted, and mentally
ill, capturing the imagination of nascent punks like Alex Chilton with songs like
"The Rubber Room." Last year, Marty Stuart, longtime Johnny Cash sideman
and torchbearer of traditional country music, approached his longtime hero with
an unrecorded song Johnny Cash had written for Porter, called "Committed
to Parkview." In the tradition of Porter's haunted ballads, "Committed
to Parkview" is the first-person account of a tenant of Nashville's legendary
sanitorium, listening in on the tormented cries of his fellow inmates. Porter
and Marty decided to build an album, Wagonmaster, around the song, revisiting
the classic feel of his chilling concept albums, interwoven with stomping barroom
honkytonk that rides with the best of Hank Williams and Ernest Tubb. The results
are magnificent, a record of raw beauty capturing a proud, ragged man looking
back unflinchingly at his life. At 79, and celebrating his 50th anniversary at
the Grand Ole Opry, Porter has never been more vibrant and relevant. (Anti) MORE

" ...Over his four-decade career, David Olney has built a reputation not
as a kind-hearted troubadour but rather as a performing songwriter possessed of
a sharp literary mind that cuts to the bone of the human condition. Whether the

JAMES
BLACKSHAW Cloud OF Unknowing Performing
and recording since 2003, his name is frequently mentioned as one of the foremost
modern solo acoustic guitarists. Now at the age of 25, Blackshaw, an untrained
musician born and still residing in the suburban environs of Greater London, draws
as much inspiration from early religious music, South-Asian folk music and composers
such as Arvo Part, Simeon Ten Holt, Steve Reich and Charlemagne Palestine as he
does from John Fahey, Robbie Basho and the early Takoma Records roster, constantly
breaking boundaries in what could be conceived as a somewhat limited medium. In
his part improvised and part written songs, Blackshaw makes expert use of Eastern
and Western scales, chord changes reminiscent of European classical music and
incredibly intricate fingerpicking patterns to make a sound that is both challengingly
minimalistic, yet warm and approachable to anybody who might hear it, with a rare
sensitivity that conveys both immense beauty, hope and sadness. (Tompkins Square) MORE

blues with little more than an acoustic guitar. And with an age beyond his years,
celebrates the traditional without being predictable. "By no means is it
all twelve-bar," he says. "I avoided a lot of twelve-bar blues and went
straight for the old-school, one-chord stuff. That's actually some of my favorite
stuff, the eerie dark tunes by R. L. Burnside and Fred McDowell - not so much
the white blues." (Valley) MORE

A CRACKER! THE DIRTY 30'S Dirty 30s "If
the Replacements played Southern rock, they might have sounded something like
Cape Girardeau`s Dirty 30`s. Teaming with legendary roots producer Eric Ambel,
the band struts and grinds through heavy, twangy rock that`s too loud for Americana
and too spontaneous for the typical indie template on its self-titled debut. To
call them a bar band is no slur: They play fast and loose with free-wheeling blues-based
guitar riffs, always a dependable soundtrack for drinking till last call and smoking
up on the way home." - Roy Kasten, River Front Times REVIEW

A CRACKER! KENNY ROBY The Mercy Filter The
Mercy Filter is the third solo outing from the one-time Six String Drag singer/songwriter
Kenny Roby and is certainly not shy on the vocal presence that has marked all
of his recorded work. But in relation to his previous release, Rather Not Know,
this one breaks through his alt. country veneer to sport a collection of decidedly
edgier rock-oriented tunes. Crafty Costello-esque pop songs and straight-ahead
John Hiatt-style rockers dominate this crackin` good record, which is offset with
some mellower, yet darkly compelling, material too. Tracks such as lazy acoustic
tunes "Foot Soldier" and "Everything Goes Black", as well
as the waltz-y "Lead Dancer`s Dance", are haunting and somber slices
of Americana with the expected clever twists. But the bulk of the goods here muscle
through with admirable strength and zeal touting Roby as potent a performer as
he is a songwriter. That`s no revelation, but this record is. -- Robinson, Miles

SARAH
LEE GUTHRIE/JOHNNY IRION Entirely Live CDEP The
magic of this duo, that performs a twangy, countrified brand of folk, is that
their vocal harmonies are so well matched. Quite stunning, actually, as they launch
into the opening track, "Georgia Pine", of this powerful performance
recorded live at Paige Auditorium in Durham, NC on March 24, 2003. Their chilling
dynamic maintains a sad beauty all the way to the end of this 7-track EP, which
features two tracks from Irion`s debut Unity Lodge ("DC Niner", "Thirty
Inch Coal") and one from Guthrie`s self-titled debut ("River").
There is also a waltzing cover of Hoyt Axton`s "In A Young Girl`s Mind".
The final three tracks find the two assisted by Sarah`s dad Arlo on guitar, harmonica
and vocals, and brother Abe on keys and vocal. It`s a family affair when husband
and wife (Johnny and Sarah) join father and brother to end with an adaptation
of Grandfather Woody`s risqu lyric "There`ll Be No Church Tonight".

OF LEON Because Of The Times LP "...
an excellent third album from the Kings. Because of the Times, named after a Southern
preachers` conference that the boys used to attend with their Pentecostal minister
father, is a whole album full of songs inspired by the only topic the Kings seem
to care about: no-good women, the kind who turn nice country boys into thieves,
fugitives or corpses, and make them love every sordid second of it. These are
sons of the preacher man: singer-guitarist Caleb, bassist Jared and drummer Nathan
are brothers, while cousin Matthew plays lead guitar. The Followills grew up living
in a car with their defrocked itinerant minister daddy, Leon, and they basically
went into the same business, except they`ve got sticky fingers for sin. On anthemic

Daredevils and the Amazing Rhythm Aces." 4 STARS -- Rob Sheffield, rollingstone.com

form lends itself to endless variations, but its themes are universal - tales
of hard times and heartbreak told through music. The 1950s, '60s and '70s were

the bounds of the genre. My Music's Legends Of Country brings back country's greatest
hits from its greatest stars. From Patti Page's "Tennessee Waltz" to

What's
Happening Around the MOM Offices | This
week you will read about redemption from a hedonistic past, and how choices are
made.
AS
THE BUSINESS OF MUSIC CONTINUES TO EVOLVE YOUR JESTER finds himself in conversations
with friends about how we perceived the music business as the '70s came to a close.
Punk was rearing up like a bratty teen, and vainglorious, boated rock superstars
were about to receive a warning shot of a war that wouldn't come to fruition for
another couple of decades.
The
punk revolution was about the do-it-yourself ethic that is reaching maturity right
now. But, the part of the scene that still captured most teens imagination --
we had one punk rocker in our high school -- was arena rock bands that gave young
mail rock fans a vicarious thrill. We dreamed of living the life of flying from
gig to gig on Lear jets, groupies at every outpost, drugs and alcohol aplenty,
record company liaisons at the ready to make every dream and desire come true
while making millions by being up on rocking the hearts our of several thousand
screaming kids every night. Since
Your Jester runs with grizzled record industry vets, not members of Aerosmith,
the stories we trade (sometimes first-hand, sometimes apocryphal) are from the
fan and business side. Record
companies themselves were full of indulgers as well. You might not be in the band,
but you were friend of the band. Backstage access, party with the boys, get the
girls because you knew the boys. If you couldn't be in a band, then working for
a big label could fill the bill as well. During the heyday of Kiss and Donna Summer,
legend has it Casablanca Records sent a staffer around every day to take the drug
orders from the other employees. As
a fan, going to a rock show was full of promise. You knew the band was going to
kick ass, you expected there to be stupid-level partying before the show (and
sometimes during... sharing a joint during a show with total strangers is still
one of the great communal experiences...call me a later-day hippie if you wish),
you hoped you would meet girls (although that rarely happened because we were
all scared of actually talking to them), and you'd score a t-shirt after the show
as a trophy, proudly wearing it to school the next day. Career-wise,
at least in Southern California, working for a record company was cooler than
working in the movies or television. Who would have guessed that in a little more
than two decades record labels would go from being the coolest place to work to
being perceived as so evil, just this side of manufacturing nerve gas for use
on kids on the playground, that most of my grizzled old-timer friends would, in
retrospect, not choose the music business as a career. I
know we can't go back to the days of Led Zeppelin riding motorcycles inside the
Hyatt on Sunset, but I can't quite understand why the public perceives the business
as evil while television, radio, and movie making get a disinterested sigh. SEVERAL
TIMES A WEEK WE GO THROUGH THE submissions in a sometimes futile, always vain
attempt to glean the best and sellable (we're capitalist here, if you like Rita
Coolidge, who am I to tell you otherwise?). We decided long ago that the submission
process had to be somewhat blind and one-sided because no matter what we do on
our end, those that don't make the cut, for whatever reason, are going to be disappointed. For
several years we tried the humane approach: "We didn't think our customers
would react positively." That didn't mean the music was bad, just that we
couldn't sell it. Inevitably, we'd get, "Well, why not?"in reply. Or,
the defensive, "It doesn't do me any favors by not telling me the truth." Or,
the defiant, "I think you are wrong. I think my music is perfect for your
customers." Or,
the angry, "You suck. You don't know what you are talking about." So,
we chose to not say anything. Maybe it doesn't fit into our current culture of
everyone exposing their every inner-most thoughts and feelings for the world to
comment. We're not built that way. We have a business and an opinion. People making
music take is very personally. The screws in a bin at the hardware store couldn't
care less if you decide to carry another line from another manufacturer. We
don't have that luxury. We
are learning to accept the flailing, angry "I'll show you!" e-mails
or calls that we get from a spurned artist because we hope we're wrong. We hope
that the artist does have something interesting to create and can find a way to
connect with the masses. In
the big scheme, our opinion means nothing. In our little world, it is all that
counts.
