IT'S A CRACKER!
LUKE BRINDLEY

Luke Brindley
The lore on this release is it was completed in only three days. If that is accurate, Luke Brindley and producer Jared Bartlett have tapped into something special. This self titled debut, released one year after Brindley released an album with his brother, showcases with raspy, soulful voice cast against warm country-soul instrumentation. The album captures terrific roots-pop like Minibar, and Matthew Ryan. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (Aer Music)

BRINDLEY BROTHERS

Filled With Fire
Filled With Fire "Punchy melodies, brotherly harmonies and songs that get to -- and have -- a point without wasting their breath or your time. Serious pop for anyone who feels lost in today's musical wasteland." - Buzz Mclain, Playboy

IT'S A CRACKER!
UNITED STEEL WORKERS OF MONTREAL

Kerosene & Coal
Life on the fringes, desperate love, and the neighborhood barflys are all subjects of the gritty country-blues of USWM. Lead vocals are traded between the raw and howling Gern f, the emotionally raw Gus Beauchamp, and the sultry Felicity Hamer. Musically, they are driven by the a telecaster, banjo and mandolin. 12 tracks of raw, aggressive and heartbreaking music. USWM capture the gritty spirit and melodrama of the everyday blue collar man. It is as if Tom Waits was fronting a bluegrass-y E-Street Band. This record smokes. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (weewerk)

IT'S A CRACKER!
PETER WALSH

Forbidden Road
Forbidden Road is a soft, exquisitely gentle, dark country/folk album modeled after the songwriting styles of Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark with the finger picking of Mississippi John Hurt. Walsh sings just above a whisper, almost shyly at times, with tales of unrequited love and loss. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (Appaloosa Records)

SARAH BORGES AND THE BROKEN SINGLES
Diamonds In The Dark
Some folks make music because they want to-others do it because they have no choice. Sarah Borges clearly falls into the latter category, the kind of person whose DNA would read like a musical chart if you mapped it out on paper. Diamonds in the Dark, Borges' second album-and first for Sugar Hill-spells that out in lush detail, with every plaintive vocal twist and every rollicking guitar turn offering up proof that the Massachusetts native knows her way around American music's roots (and has her own roots planted firmly in some mighty fertile soil). That terrain, like the landscape she and her band, The Broken Singles have traversed over the past few years, is plenty varied-taking in scenes as diverse as the roadhouse melancholy of "Belle of the Bar" to the unashamedly guileless romanticism of "The Day We Met." Diamonds in the Dark-produced, like its predecessor, by studio whiz Paul Q. Kolderie (who's helmed classics by Radiohead, the Pixies and Uncle Tupelo)-harbors impossibly infectious hooks secreted in each and every song. The disc has the rare ability to ensnare those drawn to both unvarnished floors and lace curtains, sweetly-spun pedal steel lines and bare-knuckled drums. (Sugar Hill)

JOHN DOE

A Year In The Wilderness
At a trim 35 minutes, there's no fat to be found on this album. There is a grace throughout that highlights the maturing troubadour's craft with country shuffles, waltzes and narrative gems. And Doe still rocks, as evidenced by the opening track "Hotel Ghost," a speaker burner that hearkens back to the late '70s at the Whiskey..." - Kevin Friedman, Filter Magazine. Guest stars appearing on A Year in the Wilderness include Dave Alvin, Jill Sobule, Kathleen Edwards, Dan Auerbach (from The Black Keys), Greg Leisz and Aimee Mann.(Yep Roc)

MARK OLSON

The Salvation Blues
Mark Olson spent the past two years doing one thing - traveling the world. During this time, the singer/songwriter and Jayhawks co-founder came to grips with some of the most painful moments of his life, including a divorce that resulted in the loss of the home he'd built in the California desert.Such life-altering events inspired him to dig somehow deeper, writing the kind of album that makes adjectives like introspective seem tired and utterly useless: the aptly titled 'The Salvation Blues Recorded over a three week period in October 2006. Producer Ben Vaughn assembled a top-flight band, including guitarists Tony Gilkyson (formerly with X and Lone Justice, Randy Weeks and Mike Stinson) and Greg Leisz (noted for his work with k.d. lang, Lucinda Williams, Dave Alvin, and many others), keyboardist Zac Rae (a sideman for Alanis Morissette and Fiona Apple), percussionist Danny Frankel (a former member of the Creekdippers and a well-traveled L.A. session man), and Vaughn's own drummer Kevin Jarvis. Bassist David J. Carpenter and vocalist Cindy Wasserman were recruited from the L.A. roots-rock band Dead Rock West. Also present to sing harmony on three songs was Gary Louris, Olson's old partner in the Jayhawks. Please note the packaging is beautiful, made to look like a book!

CHERRYHOLMES

Cherryholmes II Black & White
"Fluidly moving from heartbreaking ballads to blistering jams, the album features richly constructed songs built on effortlessly blended harmonies and masterful instrumentation, with many of the tunes sure to become future bluegrass standards. Truly the next generation of bluegrass, the Skaggs protege's traditional song structures play out not as songs from a bygone era, but as tunes played with the high voltage of a group with four members between the ages of 14 and 23...." -- cybergrass.com (Skaggs Family)

MONAHANS
Low Pining
The Austin-and-San Francisco-based band Monahans began in the spring of 2006 as a new project by Milton Mapes collaborators Greg Vanderpool, Roberto Sanchez, Jim Fredley, and Britton Beisenherz. The bands first release, Low Pining weaves anthemic melodies in-and-out of ambient tranquility and rhythmic intensity. The songs have a distinct nautical theme, decisively apolitical, with strands of detachment, nostalgia, and spiritual longing stretched across vast sonic landscapes. The album also features multi-instrumentalist Chris Dye, Todd Pertll on pedal steel, and Margo Timmins, vocalist of Cowboy Junkies (with whom Milton Mapes toured in 2006). (Undertow)

ABRA MOORE
On The Way
On The Way finds Abra Moore completely at ease in her own skin and voice. It's a ferociously quiet album that unfolds gently but packs an emotional wallop with its unwavering honesty. It's an album full of subtle moods. In many ways, On The Way captures the cinematic magic of a great film. From the opening seduction of "Into The Sunset" to the closing reprise of the title track, it transports the listener to a different space. (Sarathan Records)

PATRICK SWEANY

Every Hour Is A Dollar Gone
This album was engineered and produced by Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys, and features 11 new Sweany-penned tunes. The album was mastered by Paul Hamman, who, along with his legendary father Kenneth, was responsible for engineering classic albums by The James Gang and Grand Funk Railroad, among others. The combination of Auerbach and Hamman takes the new album away from the Southern roots sound of Sweany's previous releases and into the classic Rust Belt rock of the 70s. Add to this Sweany's tasteful guitar work and impressive vocals (that seem to get better with each recording), and you have an album that not only sounds gorgeous, but captures the energy of Sweany's riotous live sets. JEFFREY HALFORD & THE HEALERS
Broken Chord
This is the 6th release from San Francisco-based singer/songwriter/guitar slinger/poet Jeffrey Halford. As a master purveyor of rootsy, bluesy rock with a pop sensibility, Halford and his band, The Healers (featuring Augie Meyers), shake the rafters, raise your consciousness, and sanctify your soul. Halford's is a uniquely American voice, authentic and timeless. Bruce Kaphan, longtime guitarist and producer of American Music Club, co-produced the album with Halford. Jeffrey also brought in the legendary Texas Music Hall of Famer Augie Meyers on keyboard, as well as Louisiana's own Kirk "Jellyroll" Johnson on harmonica to assure that grooves would be raucous and greasy. JOAN AS POLICEWOMAN

Real Life
"...Joan Wasser has been many things, including backing singer for the likes of Lou Reed and Antony And The Johnsons. It's Antony Hegarty's heady blend of street smarts and Grand Guignol melodrama that Wasser's songs most readily recall. Hegarty even cameos on Real Life's bristling standout, I Defy - a duet with Wasser that sounds like a brace of clamorous Nina Simones giving heartache the eloquent finger. Elsewhere, Wasser's sensual ululations decorate songs that run the gamut, from sinuous funk nocturnes to toy piano reveries. Arresting stuff. " --David Sheppard,bbc.co.uk (Sidecho Records)

BONGOS

Drums Along The Hudson (Spec)
"The Bongos were one of the most distinctive bands to come out of the briefly bustling Hoboken pop scene in the early Eighties -- Richard Barone's songs were gloriously hooky, but also forcefully propulsive enough to live up to the group's name (aided immeasurably by Rob Norris's agile bass and Frank Giannini's precise drumming), and Barone's guitar work managed to be melodic and oblique at the same time, carrying the tune while allowing room for his own sonic interjections which could be noisy or richly smooth at will. The Bongos were different enough from their contemporaries that Drums Along The Hudson has dated remarkable little since it was released in 1982, sounding less like "new wave" than a simply timeless example of smart...Mark Deming, All Music Guide. What's Happening Around the MOM Offices

This week you will read about putting on musical blinders, musical stall, the mystery behind the music.

WHO WOULD THINK A VISIT TO THE NEWSSTAND would provide a defining personal moment. While thumbing through the music magazines -- yes, Your Jester listens to and learns about music as part of a lifestyle - I came across a magazine called Classic Rock. It was on the shelf between Uncut and Mojo. It looked, at quick glance, to be from the same publisher as those two fine music publications. It, too, had a free sampler CD. It was nicely put together. But, it is called Classic Rock.

From a marketing standpoint, they've identified the magazine well. What's inside? Stories about older artists, their new records, new artists that sound like old artists and so on.

But, it is called Classic Rock. It states by its title that this is a magazine for people who are interested in a particular era of music. I doubt I would have been so bothered by a magazine titled "Dixieland Jazz."

For me, reading a magazine called Classic Rock would be a statement that I had given up on trying to find new music that moves me. Sure, the magazine could be one of many I read every month to round out my musical experience. But, no, I couldn't even open it.

Your Jester isn't so delusional to believe that many of the music mags I read every month aren't "classic rock" oriented but they are at least discreet about it. They provide the illusion that I haven't totally given in to the idea that will be new music from artists I've never heard before that is going to emotionally cut me to the bone like the first time I "got" The Clash (or dozens of other bands).

Instead, I walked away from the music section and bought a magazine about dogs because it had many cute pictures of mutts.

A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO YOUR JESTER RECEIVED A CALL from an old friend. We hadn't heard from him in over two years. When asked where he had been, the answer was surprising. He had burned out on music. Second and third albums by musicians he liked had been underwhelming. He also expressed disappointment that the industry has fewer ways to take a fledgling band and support them while they develop artistically and, hopefully, commercially.

He emerged after two years because he again felt that familiar itch. He felt ready to start the process, that journey where you find someone new, give it a test drive and hopefully like it enough to care the next time the artist puts something out.

Just like artists, fans go through droughts where nothing sounds good, new releases are disappointing and interest wanes.

The best part about my old friend returning was we got to talk about music, bands we had seen growing up, life in his city and mine, family friends etc. You know, all the things friends talk about.

YOUR JESTER HAS BEEN AVOIDING MENTIONING The Warren Zevon bio "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead." After waxing on about his recent reissues, Your Jester has been trying to minimize the Zevon content so other completely insane musicians and their output could be discussed.

Now that Your Jester has purged that moment of irrational guilt, let's rave about "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead," because it is a fascinating oral history of a completely mad and very flawed genius.

Zevon's instructions to his ex-wife Crystal, was to tell his story, even the ugly parts. There were loads of ugly parts.

Besides enjoying the read about one of my favorite artists, I was left with several questions about the modern culture of music. We're in an age where culture suggests everyone should reveal all of their innermost thoughts via various social networking.

I try to know an artist's motivation because it helps me process the work. Had I known Zevon was as damaged and abusive a person, which absolutely influence his creative process, I might have dismissed him outright before ever listening to the music. In retrospect, learning what I did now brings the music into another light.

The hard and fast rule, then, is there is no hard and fast rule about how much you should know about an artist before processing the work. But, for me, at least, the back story is as important somewhere along the way because it allows me to appreciate creative output on a different level.

The other thing I learned from reading the Zevon bio was if he was coming up today most of us would never have hear his music. He had friends who used their leverage to get him in front of the people who had the money and means.

As you can tell from my repeat visits to Zevon, my life is richer for having experienced his music. I'm not saying the evolving music business is worse than the old version, just different.

Until next week,

The Queen, Your Jester, and The Mangler
