A CRACKERS ! THE BEST OF THE BANDS YOU'VE NEVER HEARD! The "It's
A Cracker" concept is designed to encourage you to take musical chances.
We think all music should be returnable if you don't like it but most of our suppliers
don't agree with our opinion. So, we make available what we can hoping you will
consider trying music you are unsure of.
IT'S
A CRACKER! AMITY FRONT Highway
Funky, and fun. Highway Bound has the loose energy of The Band or the stretched
out textures of the Allman Brothers, drawing on the jambalaya of American music
styles. It feels like a series of porch rockin' jams, even if we know this was
a produced project. There is a confidence in the playing that belies the young
ages of the band members, as if old souls have inhabited them and their music,
giving them the ability to groove together as if they've been playing together
for a hundred years. - Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (fauxpas) REVIEW

IT'S
A CRACKER! NO RIVER CITY Wolves And Fishes
If it is possible to be overly effusive and still fall short of exclaiming the
virtues of an album, let this be that moment. No River City combine a Gram Parsons
& Flying Burrito Brothers honky tonk sound, simple and interesting story telling
and excellent musicianship. This album has the feel of southern California country
rock from the early '70s without smelling musty. Drew de Man might be the best
musician that no one has yet heard of, every bit the equal to Ryan Adams. Is that
effusive enough? This album is great. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (self-released) REVIEW

ADAMS Easy Tiger
"While prolific to the point of compulsion nothing he's done has rivaled
his classic solo debut, 2000's uniformly gorgeous Heartbreaker
until now.
...great tracks include the churning, almost violent ode to self-destruction,
"Halloween Head," the traditional folk ballad "Pearls On a String,"
and "These Girls," a spare confessional that would fit perfectly next
to "Sylvia Plath" on Gold or "Call Me On Your Way Back Home"

his jones for Grateful Dead-inspired jam band impersonation (and other dubious

WILLIS Translated From Love
Kelly Willis returns after five years with the much-anticipated Translated From
Love. Produced by long-time collaborator Chuck Prophet, Translated From Love is
Willis' most sonically adventurous album to date. Prophet says of Willis, "She's
one of those singers who can make a track come alive. She's got that kind of charisma."
Translated From Love gives nods to five decades of rock, pop and country with
'60s girl group drum sounds one minute and strings-drenched C&W angst the
next. Its 12 tracks are comprised of originals, intriguing and unexpected covers
(including a vintage Vox organ-fueled take on Iggy Pop's "Success" and
Adam Green's retro-cool "Teddy Boys") plus collaborations with Prophet,
acclaimed singer songwriter Jules Shear and Kelly's husband, ace country songwriter
Bruce Robison. (Ryko) MORE

FORBERT Strange Names & New Sensations
Nearly 28 years since breaking into pop consciousness with his second album Jackrabbit
Slim and its infectious Top Ten single "Romeo's Tune," Steve Forbert
remains a master of songs offering clear-eyed insight and plain-spoken, heartfelt
eloquence. On his 429 Records/SLG debut, the well-traveled Nashville-based troubadour
explores his ongoing fascination for Strange Names & New Sensations with characteristic
wit, a sense of social consciousness and the ever-present romantic optimism that
has endeared him to two generations of folk/rock fans. The vibrant collection
finds Forbert in the midst of a true career renaissance at the wonderful age of
52-a time in his life he reflects upon wistfully on the sly narrative of the uptempo,
horn driven tune "Middle Age." In addition to ten original vocal tracks
and the easy rolling, country flavored instrumental "Around The Bend",
Strange Names & New Sensations includes a new rendition of "Romeo's Tune"
that captures the folk-pop side of the singer's artistry, complete with organ
and harmonica. Recorded primarily at Moondog Music, the Nashville-based studio
owned by legendary E-Street Band member Garry Tallent-who plays bass and co-produced
the title song--Strange Names & New Sensations finds Forbert working with
numerous longtime friends and collaborators, including primary album co-producer
Tim Coats (who first worked with Forbert as engineer on Mission of the Crossroad
Palms; producer Anthony Crawford (whose relationship with Forbert extends back
to his vocal contributions on The American In Me); and keyboardist Paul Errico
and drummer Roger Clark, both of whom played on Jackrabbit Slim. (429 Records) MORE

ON RED BBC Sessions
"Recorded between 1989-1992, it's less a comprehensive document and more
a lucky-dip of covers, alternate versions and band classics, delivered with some
surprisingly sympathetic production from the BBC's finest knob-twiddlers...Opener
Busted is which is one of the best things here, a cover of the Howard Harlan tune
made famous by Johnny Cash , and Dan and the boys supply a version that's bejwelled
with fabulousness. In fact it's the first four songs here that really make the
album worthwhile, including a great, definitive version of Fading Away which is
infinitely superior to the version on the band's second album Gas Food Lodging.
And while Stuart's singing voice had the tendancy to slip into hystrionics live,
here he's happy to slip between Neil Young, Lou Reed, and even a little bit of
Dylan." -- David McGonigle,musicomh.com. Track Listing:Busted/Are You Sure

KING WILKIE
Low Country Suite Even
as they were named 2004's Emerging Artist of the Year by the International Bluegrass
Music Association, the sound of King Wilkie was extending outward in directions
that could no longer be comfortably contained under the bluegrass banner. The
band spent the next two years touring non-stop, building a die-hard following
and honing an idiosyncratic new sound. The result is the evocative, harrowing
Low Country Suite - a dramatic push into uncharted sonic terrain. Produced by
Jim Scott (Tom Petty, Dixie Chicks, Wilco), Low Country Suite draws on the pioneering
spirit of Sweetheart of the Rodeo-era Byrds, Gram Parsons' solo LPs, and "Country
Honk" Stones, while the album's gentler songs are equally informed by the
stark, confessional folk of Nico, Nick Drake, and Leonard Cohen. Haunting yet
strangely uplifting, Low Country Suite is the captivating sound of a band willing
to leave precedent behind to create intoxicating new music from the jagged remains
of yesterday.(Zoe Records) MORE

Small Tall
by Josh Small was recorded by Lance Koehler at Minimum Wage Studio in the Oregon
Hill neighborhood of Richmond. The result is an album filled with a melody-driven
blend of folk music and 70's style rock. But don't be misled: this isn't a lame
hipster attempt to revitalize a bygone genre. There is a rare authenticity to
Small's sound that is impossible to ignore. Lyrically, the album can be read as
a sort of therapy session for Small. It's this brutally honest, almost stream-of-consciousness
approach to songwriting that gives the album its greatest strength. (Suburban

This trio delivers 11 straight-forward, high-spirited songs that are firmly rooted
in the country traditions of Hank Williams and George Jones, yet find equal footing
in the earth quakin` rattle of Sun-era rockabilly. Led by the big acoustic rhythm
guitar and vocals of Arty Hill, the Long Gone Daddies consist of merely two other
players. But it`s a big ol` sound with Dave Chappell on the smokin` Telecaster
and the country shuffle of drummer Craig Stevens. Although from the Washington/Maryland
area, these guys make classic Texas singer/songwriter country and honky-tonk much
like Austin`s super-group Heybale! It`s good fun if youre looking to move your

What's
Happening Around the MOM Offices | This
week you will read about the dogs of summer, discussions on music we're supposed
to like, and The Curse.
WASN'T
IS JUST DAYS AGO WHEN YOUR JESTER WAS cracking on folks that live near the arctic
circle because their spring would qualify as the coldest winter ever in Los Angeles?
So, where is the wise-acre stuff now that parts of Los Angeles are hitting 100
degrees today and it is only June?
Last
summer Your Jester vowed to stave off using the air conditioning in the office
in a small, but noble effort to conserve energy. Nobility lasted two days before
the sweating must've polluted the thought process because that air came on quick.
Are
you ready for the summer? Are you ready for the summertime? This morning The Queen
and I were singing one of the songs from Meatballs, probably the greatest summer
movie that doesn't feature a crazed murderer sneaking around an abandoned camp
killing of overly-randy teenagers who put aside fear and common sense because
they might get some.
Now
that the warmth (scorching heat?) is back, I'm finding my musical desires are
into more Summer-y music. Stuff that is more upbeat, that reminds me of days spent
roasting on the beach.
Putting
aside the egg-frying pavement heat, Your Jester is ready for shorts, flip-flops,
cold drinks on warm summer nights and good music. I am ready for the summer.
WE
ALL HAVE FAVORITE MUSICIANS. The Mangler adores Ian Hunter. Your Jester is also
a big fan. The Queen is indifferent, leaning towards annoyance when the subject
of Hunter inevitably comes up... again.
Hunter
released an album a few weeks ago to critical praise. Your Jester is trying, but
just can't seem to get it. Getting it would make The Mangler happy and Your Jester
is here to please. I threw the album on again yesterday. To be fair, is was more
as background as I concentrated on working on the body of this missive. I was
looking for hooks, the next "Cleveland Rocks" or "Central Park
and West." I didn't hear those kinds of hooks and told this to The Mangler.
His
response was, "It's not that kind of record. You have to listen to the songs.
It is some of his best songwriting in years." I've taken three swings, some
of them more tepid efforts than others, at listening to this record. Have I struck
out?
There
was enough there to stick the disc in the "listen again" stack (as opposed
to the "file this away alphabetically and keep it forever" pile). Somewhere
in the coming months I'll be stuck for something to hear, go back to the listen
again stack and maybe pull out the Hunter disc.
We
all have enough experience to know a release might sound completely different
-- not better or worse, just different -- if it is given time to marinate in time.
We'll have to wait and see if Ian ages well.
EVERYONE
IN EVERY WORKPLACE GETS a nickname, whether they know it or not. If you don't
know yours, ask a friendly co-worker. Your Jester guarantees you have a nickname.
The Manger (who Mangles, therefore he is) has taken to calling Your Jester, "The
Curse."
Early
in the baseball season an ex-Dodgers pitcher, who was exiled from the team to
Kansas City in exchange for a used jock and a few broken shoelaces, was pitching.
Your Jester, being the bitter sports fan that finds offering forgiveness to anyone
who has out their needs above the team, openly rooted for this pitcher to lose.
Not just lose, but get creamed. The language was much more colorful and not suitable
for use in front of priests and rabbis.
The
problem was the Kansas City Royals were playing the Boston Red Sox. The Mangler
is an avowed Baltimore Orioles fan and Red Sox hater (so much hating in this office!).
Using sports logic (not to be confused with any kind of real or reasonable thinking)
Your Jester was guilty of rooting for the Red Sox. The pitcher of scorn received
a proper pummeling at the bats of the Red Sox. But, the Red Sox victory meant
that Your Jester has somehow conjured a curse. That curse would somehow enable
the Red Sox and work against the Orioles. It had nothing to do with the Sox making
good off-season moves and the Orioles continuing to make embarrassing acquisitions.
This was curse-related.
The
Mangler has also come up with a criteria, as yet unclear or impossible to accomplish,
to remove this curse. Until then, Your Jester is known as The Curse and answers
to it when queried.
And
this is the only good nickname I know about. I'm sure others exist as well.
Until
next week,
