It's A Cracker !

IT'S A CRACKERS ! THE BEST OF THE BANDS YOU'VE NEVER HEARD! The "It's A Cracker" concept is designed to encourage you to take musical chances. We think all music should be returnable if you don't like it but most of our suppliers don't agree with our opinion. So, we make available what we can hoping you will consider trying music you are unsure of.

IT'S A CRACKER!
SARA COX

Crowded Is The New Lonely
On Cox's third solo release she explores the compromises of domestic life. A mother of three, Cox touches on both the demands of family and the isolation one can feel despite standing amongst the throngs. Her voice, reminiscent of Shelby Lynne's smokiness sans the hurt, along with her eye for life's subtleties are the centerpiece of this beautifully melancholic album. Over ten tracks Cox captures a snapshot of her life at this moment, offering a diary as much as a selection of songs. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (self-released)

IT'S A CRACKER!
LOUIS LEDFORD

Adios
Richmond, Virgina native writes narratives about those in life who had the coin come up tails, when heads was the correct call. These are stories of common folks, the troubles they experience and the effects on the human spirit. A lonesome Piedmont finger-picking style accompanies his lonesome tales. Bob Rupe's production is sympathetic to Ledford's style, letting the lyrics breath with minimal accompaniment. J. Holdren said in 9X Magazine, "[Ledford's] stories seldom end with a hero on the proverbial mountaintop. His narratives are typically told by the losers, those close to the edge, in the grandest sense. . . Adios King represents Ledford's most accomplished work, which at it's peak stands shoulder to shoulder with that of modern luminaries as Gillian Welch, Patty Griffin, and the like." -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (Waterbug)

IT'S A CRACKER!
SALTY DOGS

Autoharpoon
The second album by Arkansas' Salty Dogs continues the emulate the "Ghost of Buck, Spirit of Dwight" sound from their first album. Brad Williams's songs are pure and honest as he effortlessly moves from country to gospel and back. The backing musicians, Bart Angel (drums), Mike Nelson (bass) and Nick Devlin (guitars and lap steel) are a terrific country band. The beauty of this album is it captures that same kind of magic Dwight Yoakam offered up 20 years ago and Owens long before him. The music is essentially rural, but not primitive. It is every man, but the folks in the big city can relate. Second time out and the Salty Dogs have again produced an excellent real country record. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (Big Bender)

WHISKEY CHIMP

Ventura
The Chimp, as they are known to their fans, "sound" like a traditional string band. Below the surface of four-part harmonies and smoking instrumental prowess, The Chimp have a glint in their eyes as they bring an irreverence to the song subject matter, dragging the traditional format into the 21st century. The band, comprised of traditionalists and reformed punk rockers, is described as, ". . . Rich in harmonies, insightful and oft cleverly comical lyrics and crisp instrumentation performed with both masterful skill and schoolboy glee." The Chimp honor the tradition, but bring a joyful modernity to a sometimes stuffy genre. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (FP Records)

SHANE NICHOLSON

Faith & Science
The second solo album from Australian singer Shane Nicholson delivers a introspective weariness successfully navigating into the sea of confessional male singer-songwriters while remaining graceful and interesting. Ben Preece said in Time Magazine, "His vocals, although sombre and relaxed, never tire, instead quickly becoming captivatingly reassuring with Nicholson delivering honest mini-stories which are convincingly autobiographical." Look no further for the "next Neil Finn." Nicholson's gorgeous, weary storytelling picks up where the finest Neil Finn leaves off. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (Virt Records)

CHRIS BATHGATE

A Cork Tale Wake
One of the leaders of the Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti folk scene, Chris writes seminal folk songs that are at once new and old, rock and sometimes not roll, but all seem to reel you in with the intensity of voice, lyricism, and depth. Having drawn comparisons to Jeff Tweedy and Will Oldham, Chris has risen from the ranks of everyday singer/songwriter to a national touring favorite. After releasing and selling out of two separate records on his own in 2006, he was recently named the Best Solo Artist in Michigan by Real Detroit Weekly. (Quite Scienctific)

JOE ELY

Honky Tonk Masquerade
"Joe Ely is a masterful writer, and much of his material shows it. To hear him liken his love to "the breeze that blows from Corpus Christi" ("Because of the Wind") or deny his pride without melodrama or even melancholy ("I'll Be Your Fool") is to understand the space between Honky Tonk Masquerade and almost anything else that has emerged recently from the microwave oven of Nashville." -- Nick Tosches, rollingstone.com. JOE ELY

Joe Ely
Joe Ely's first album came out while country's outlaw movement was in full swing, but Joe Ely took it one better. This is a roots-rocking country album with tunes by Jimmie Dale Gilmore ("Treat Me Like a Saturday Night") and Butch Hancock ("She Never Spoke Spanish to Me," "If You Were a Bluebird") that deserve the near-classic status their cult of
fans have bestowed on them. -- Brian Mansfield, All Music Guide. Track Listing:I Had My Hopes Up High/Mardi Gras Waltz/She Never Spoke Spanish To Me/Gambler's Bride/Suckin' A Big Bottle Of Gin/Tennessee's Not The State I'm In/If You Were A Bluebird/Treat Me Like A Saturday Night/ All My Love/Johnny's Blues. CAROLINA CHOCOLATE DROPS

A Cork Tale Wake
"Dona Got a Ramblin' Mind is a study in contrasts, perhaps even oxymorons. The sounds found on the record are often classified as old-time, yet Dom Flemons, Rhiannon Giddens and Justin Robinson and are all in their 20s. Furthermore, for the last 70 years or so, the majority of folks making this type of music have been Caucasian. But members of the Carolina Chocolate Drops are African-American, their name a nod to the '20s black string band the Tennessee Chocolate Drops...The bulk of the cuts here are fiddle-led tunes voiced by Robinson with harmonies from Giddens (including Thompson's signature song, "Georgie Buck"), ancient in origin and delivery but fresh in personality...Most importantly, an oft-stated goal of the Carolina Chocolate Drops is to educate, but they don't approach the subject of old-time music like academics, and they certainly don't treat the 14 traditional songs on the record like artifacts too fragile to handle. Instead, they handle them with skills and precision passed along through playing with Mebane's Joe Thompson, a living link to the history they celebrate…" Rick Cornell, indyweek.com

JULIANA HATFIELD

A Cork Tale Wake
The White Broken Line is a series of live performances recorded mostly in 2005 on two separate legs of her American tour in support of her last studio album, Made In China. Some of the shows were in support of X and one song features John Doe on backing vocals. The twelve tracks represent a raw, unadorned, soulful energy and range from her early hit, "My Sister," to obscure deep album cuts and fan favorites. JULE BROWN
Soldier In The 9th
Jule Brown's 2006 release, Smoke and Mirrors, was an impressive third album from this singer-songwriter from North Carolina. Jule used his subtle word-play and minimalist song structure to send heavy messages while keeping the music light and danceable. On Soldier in the 9th, this core structure to the "Jule Brown sound" is continued and expanded by keyboards. The Hammond B-3, Wurlitzer and Rhodes conjure images of reggae beats, Procol Harum, Dylan and a host of other influences, while continuing his wry commentary on life in America. (Enabler)

DEAD ROCK WEST

Honey and Salt
A mash of jangly power pop, twangy rock, and blending vocal harmonies along with passionate hook-filled songwriting makes Dead Rock West`s Honey & Salt a hard-charging debut. Energetic, like their musical heroes X, the band defies easy categorization as they pull from country rock as
much as punk without bending to either. Southern California-scene vets Frank Lee Drennen and Cindy Wasserman spark when they harmonize, the music jumps out making this a fantastic debut. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (Populuxe)

St. Louis scene veterans Half Knots return in 2007 with another collection of grand, soulful, melancholic twang pop. Acoustically driven, but never without forward momentum. The Half Knots have weaved together 11 tracks that carry forth the glorious moments of the Jayhawks, while imbuing the tracks with a bit of St. Louis blues. The accolades for their 2005 debut were warranted. Color Them Blue delivers as a beautifully executed follow-up. Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music

GRAHAM PARKER

103 Degrees In June (Last Call on these!)
Signed/Numbered limited edition CD of 2000! June 2005 Graham Parker and the Figgs rolled into Chicago for the last show of their tour. 103 Degrees in June documents that night when the music takes over, when the crowd and the band feed off one another and no one minds being soaked to the skin. Hot? Hell yes, it was hot. GP and the boys were in top form from their tour and they tore through killer versions of songs covering the length of GP`s legendary career. IT'S A CRACKER!
SONS OF BILL

A Far Cry From Freedom
Sons Of Bill sing of small town dreamers and homesick travelers. And the opening track`s lyric of "Take me Back To The Time when the end of the world was the county line" says a lot about them. Imagine the tougher East coast cousins of I See Hawks In LA, though without the "cosmic" edge. The Virginian quartet is led by the songwriting talents of James Wilson, and his brother Sam on a few tunes, and the band shines with both smart and catchy lyrics. "Far Cry" is a tough and groovy Southern Rocker with banjo backed power chords and a ripping guitar solo. The muscle of this track gives way to the more introspective bit of acoustic Americana, "My Hometown", a fine example of the strong theme that runs through A Far Cry From Freedom. One wonders what heights they might reach once they've seen the world. -- Robinson, Miles Of Music (self-Released)

04. Ronny Elliott - Live
Ronny rocks out on this disc which suits his songs to a T.

The recent set of Warren Zevon re-issues has led many recent conversations to sudden veer into spontaneous howling sessions.

What's Happening Around the MOM Offices

This week you will read about the fifth biggest holiday in America, the madness of figuring out who is who, and the big paycheck that must be due expert analysis.

SMACK DAB IN THE MIDDLE OF NEXT WEEK is July 4th. Those of you reading from these borders will know it as Independence Day (and the day to purchase contraband explody things from just across the county line). Those of you from the UK might view the day as a sad one when a bunch of rag tag soldiers defeated the greatest military power. Those of you from other countries probably know it as the day you call America and get no answer and have no idea why.

The Mangler will be attending the parade in his lovable adopted hometown of Sierra Madre. That is, if he gets released from Beer Jail on time. The town hosts a beer garden the night before. Then the town has a parade replete with local "entertainment." Presumably, the entertainment it is not the portion of the population who were just released from Beer Jail.

The Queen and Your Jester will likely assume the annual strategy of closing all of the windows as tightly as possible, turning up the television and praying that the dogs do not hear the popping of locally fired, illegally acquired explody things.

Fortunately, Miles, now hitting 15 years, has become a largely deaf big old guy so he barely notices what used to send him into utter panic. Merle doesn't care for the popping and will attempt to hide underneath us... literally. We have no idea how Satchel will react, but we'll have all doors and gates secured so he can't bolt if he freaks out.

Top five holidays for today. Thanksgiving (eat!), Christmas/Hanukkah (presents and eat!), Memorial Day (Indy 500 race), Flag Day (we celebrate, uh, the creation of the flag?) and then 4th of July (picnics and scared dogs).

Hooray for those of you celebrating Independence. Sorry for your loss for those of you who are not yet over our Independence. And, we (and the entire country) will be back to work on Thursday for those of you that get voice mail.

WE HAD A SECONDARY SERVER MELT DOWN THIS WEEK. It was working fine, Your Jester installed a Service Pack and then it just wouldn't power up again. No fan. Nothing.

The net result -- as we wait for the server's repair or replacement --is The Mangler has momentarily moved his desk and computer into our small office. Cozy!

Then an interesting thing happened. Your Jester randomly pulled from the submissions pile, glanced at the disc, decided the cover wasn't scary but was put off because there was no contact information inside the package. At the least, we usually get a name and phone number scribbled in the finest Bic pen on a torn piece of notebook paper.

Despite that, Your Jester put the disc. Immediately, it is obviously a terrific record, well packaged and sellable. Then The Mangler proves why we keep him around (even if it is overly cozy at the moment). He says, "That's the guy from Diesel Doug." Sometimes we get caught in the churn, trying to turn product, trying to keep a pipeline filled we forget that underlying it all are people trying to make their way.

FOUR OUT OF FIVE LIBRARIANS find Your Jester to be amusing. Two out of five bartenders would prefer serving Your Jester's bourbon neat instead of on the rocks. But 60% say Makers on the rocks is ok. See how this works? Somebody got paid for these studies. (Ok, nobody got paid, but the point is someone could have been paid to write those kinds of studies.) With that, I'm going to offer Your Jester's Unscientific Analysis of the General Customer Attitudes In The Maturation of the Internet and Offshoring of Customer Service.

No, it doesn't spell out something clever with the initials. Your Jester writes this on Thursday just before the missive goes. Creating one of the clever titles that spells out a word would likely take an extra hour or two.

Back to the unofficial study, numbers indicate that customers expect to be screwed with by companies. They've become way more cynical and impatient. Ok, where is my grant?

Earlier this week, our office DSL starting sputtering everyday at around 3:00 local time. We always take a performance hit as people start getting home, logging on and eating up local bandwidth. this, though was different. This was a failure of service. A call to the provider led to a conversation with "John." Your Jester is not making up the "John" part. That's the Americanized name this gentleman was using. The call was to somewhere in Southeast Asia. This was after going through a completely frustrating voice-activated phone tree to even get to "John".

After much "analysis" it was determined that a router in Glendale, California was experiencing trouble. "John" has no idea where Glendale is. John has no idea where I am. Technicians reported service should be restored within the next three hours. No, I shouldn't call back at three hours and one minute because that is an estimate.

All John wants to do is fill out the fields on his screen, get rid of me, after mentioning that a performance survey would be coming my way and it would really help him if I could take 10 minutes out of my busy day to complete it.

That was Thursday.

Friday was similar. Again, failure in the afternoon. Again, an estimate of time to be fixed. That led to an early visit to the Makers Mark, where three out of five bartenders agreed Makers on the rocks was ok.

Monday... again, a failure. This time when I called I heard all of the same answers. this time, I got the supervisor on the phone. He repeated word-for-word exactly what the earlier tech had told me. By the way, and I'm not making this up, the supervisor was also named "John." Very "Buckaroo Banzai."

After he finished his spiel, I recounted the events of the last three business days. He could see that on his terminal so he was aware I was being "persistent." And, this is where we all get annoyed with customer service.

He begins to tell me why he can't yet give me a credit for lost time because I haven't reached some kind of inconvenience threshold (my words). I explain to "John" that I'm not calling to get a credit, I'm calling because I want my DSL to work and if they can't do it, I can find someone to provide me that service.

You see the lesson here? We're aware that if we give crap service customer go elsewhere. We aren't so arrogant that we believe that you have no other choices. But, customers have come to expect that a company is going to be a pain to deal with, that the customer will get stuck in a godawful phone tree and be forced to talk to someone in a "call center" in India. So, we are not surprised when calls and e-mails come in where the customer, especially newbies, expects to get the runaround. When I call customer service I expect to be frustrated.

I've learned to not let calling customer service bother me as much as it once did. Credit the Makers Mark, maturity, acceptance... whatever gets you through the night. We've learned that socially, we are learning to expect to have to "be aggressive" with companies to get what we want. Maybe it is the old hippie in me (even if I was too young to be a hippie) but life is too short to put people through that experience while chasing a profit. So, I'm also learning that folks come to us ready for battle even if, logically, it makes no sense. We're learning to accept that and not take it personally.

We will never be faceless. We'll always do the best of our abilities, and, increasingly, the public will expect that is all a ruse to get more money out of them. That's the way it is.

Put that in your PhD pipe and smoke it. Where is my grant money?

Until next week,

The Queen, Your Jester, and The Mangler
