A CRACKERS! THE BEST OF THE BANDS YOU'VE NEVER HEARD! The "It's
A Cracker" concept is designed to encourage you to take musical chances.
We think all music should be returnable if you don't like it but most of our suppliers
don't agree with our opinion. So, we make available what we can hoping you will
consider trying music you are unsure of.
IT'S
A CRACKER! GRACE BASEMENT New Sense "Of
all the local albums to be released in the past year hell, the past five
years one of the best is Grace Basement's New Sense. The music is smart,
and the tone is varied without being scattered; specifically, it's a genre-hop
through alt-country, basement pop, fuzzy rock and acoustic folk.... His ear for
melody is unmistakable; New Sense is packed with simple harmonic riffs, complex
vocal harmonies, and tossed-off lyrics that spring to life in the record's joyful
atmosphere.... Fiddler Kevin Buckley is the man behind Grace Basement, a harmony-drenched
outfit with songs indebted to: the Beatles' melodic smarts; Guided by Voices'
songwriting quirks; Superchunk's sunny, grungy riffs." -- Christian Schaeffer,

A CRACKER! FELICE BROTHERS Tonight At The Arizona
Time Out called The Felice Brothers, "Scruffy and scratched Americana that
recalls Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark and early Springsteen." Add to that an
authentic dust-bowl sensibility and you begin to get the feel for this band of
brothers. Effortlessly, the Felice Brothers capture the spirit of The Band working
out in the basement with Dylan. Drowned in Sound magazine captured it best when
they said, "Tonight At The Arizona documents the reality of happy endings
not being one of life's guarantees. From teenage pregnancies and the study of
your firearm as you contemplate suicide, to being arrested for the drugs you were
dealing to pay for your mother's medical bills, the gritty contents are delivered
with a wavery-voiced nod to all-time greats Dylan and Guthrie, backed by wailed
group choruses liberated from hick bars and films set in the Deep South."
This release is highly recommended. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (Loose) REVIEW

& THE RODEO KINGS Let's Frolic
Produced by the incredible Colin Linden, it features fourteen songs penned by
three of Canada's finest songwriters Stephen Fearing, Colin Linden and Tom Wilson
with some outstanding collaborations. Lending impeccable support on the sessions
are long time collaborators Richard Bell (keyboards) John Dymond (bass) and Gary
Craig (drums). Special guests include Garth Hudson (The Band) Pam Tillis, Malcolm
Burn, Wayne Jackson (The Memphis Horns), Daniel Lanois and John Whynot. Long time
friend and fan Daniel Lanois wrote a beautiful track entitled House of Soul with
the stipulation that they had to make him cry in order to have it. He loved it
and it is track number two. (True North) MORE

WALT WILKINS &
MYSTIQUEROS Diamonds In The Sun
The CD was produced by Lloyd Maines, recorded at The Zone Studio in Dripping Springs
and mastered at Terra Nova Digital Audio. The album includes six tracks by Wilkins,
two by band members, and three covers by the likes of The Band, Davis Raines,
Ray Stephenson & Bob Dipiero. Live performances are already drawing comparisons
to The Eagles, but the band also reflects influences such as Poco, The Lost Gonzo
Band, and Crosby, Stills & Nash. Joining Wilkins on acoustic guitar are Bill
Small on bass, percussion and acoustic guitar; John M. Greenberg and Marcus Eldridge
on electric guitars; and Ramon Rodriguez on drums and percussion. All five are
singers, four are songwriters and each has made his own records. Maines also contributed
turns on steel guitar, baritone guitar, acoustic high-string guitar and mandolin.

THE BASEMENT
Illicit Hugs & Playground Thugs
Like the Flying Burrito Brothers with hips, like Van Morrison letting loose with
some back-street white-boy soul shouting, The Basement embody the best from the
past while thrusting it into the present. The spirit and intensity of Dylan's
late 60's period with The Band is ever present in this debut from one of Ireland's
most exciting young new bands. From the jangly foot-stomping romp of "Medicine
Day" to the bittersweet lament of "It's A Kinda Love" to the twangy
raucousness of "Do You Think You're Movin' On", 'Illicit Hugs and Playground
Thugs' is a crafted debut that already sounds like a living and breathing classic. MORE

JOHN VANDERSLICE Emerald City
Vanderslice recorded this album in the midst of anguishing legal limbo after a
visa application for his French girlfriend was rejected by US immigration. The
album takes its title from a reference to the "Green Zone" in Iraq,
but its themes are broad. "John Vanderslice is starting to look like the
most consistently engaging singer and songwriter - and maybe even live performer
- on indie rockdom's current landscape" - Washington Post. (Barsuk) MORE

PETER HIMMELMAN
Pigeons Couldn't Sleep
The Pigeons Couldn't Sleep's 13 tracks range from blistering and bluesy house-shakers
to ballads of tender urgency. The album begins with a haunted slide-guitar passage
by Himmelman (whose guitar prowess shouldn't be underestimated) and ends with
the gospel tinged "If We Could Hold Each Other's Hunger," about the
power of empathy. In between, Himmelman proffers such powerful songs as "Gratitude,"
"War of Words" and "The Ship of Last Hope." The songs on this
self-produced album started as sketches, which Himmelman developed until they
were "finished paintings." He was joined by Willie Aron (Victoria Williams,
Balancing Act) on vocals; Brett Simons (Fiona Apple, Liz Phair), bass; Jeff Babko
("Jimmy Kimmel Live", James Taylor), keyboards; George Shelby (Brian
Setzer), saxophones; Jimmy Englund (Hindu Rodeo), drums, Lee Jaffee (Bob Marley,
Peter Tosh), harmonica, and Israeli musician Daniel K. Man on piano and Hammond
B3. The CD comes bundled with a DVD, a feature-length documentary, Rock God. The
65-minute film begins in the '70s with footage of Himmelman's notorious Minnesota
new wave band, Sussman Lawrence. (Himmasongs) MORE

Riot" and "13", all with a new energy that could only be captured
in a live setting among his most rabid fans in the world. Adding a piano player
and second guitarist to the line-up presented an opportunity to take some of his
Stray Cats classics and solo hits into fresh territory. A must have for any Setzer

WILL STRATTON
What The Night Said
No one ever said being humble is a bad thing. It's certainly not bad in the case
of Will Stratton, because he really doesn't seem to comprehend the reaches of
his musicianship. Not only does Will have talent, but he has manners, modesty,
compassion, and optimism - characteristics rarely found in young musicians. Will's
personality is absolutely demonstrated in his debut album. The music on What The
Night Said ... is gentle but intense. Will has the uncanny ability to compose
intricate songs that speak to the listener in such an effortless and beautiful
way that he makes songwriting seem easy. The tone of the album reflects the contradictions
of peace and uneasiness during the dark hours. MORE

TOWNES VAN ZANDT Live At The Old Quarter (Eng)(Rmst)
Recorded over the course of five hot Texan nights in July 1973, this classic live
album captures the legendary singer/songwriter at his career peak. Townes Van
Zandt performs the best of his early songs for an appreciative audience in the
intimate surroundings of 'The Old Quarter' in his home state. The songs are interspersed
with his inimitable song introductions, jokes and general banter with the audience.
Such low-key appearances always brought out the best in Van Zandt and this marvellous
26-song collection remains as one of his most accessible albums in terms of introducing
listeners to his work. Track Listing Disc 1: Announcement/Pancho & Lefty/Mr.

musical elegance and emotional integrity. Did You Think I Was Gone ? , was recorded

SEBADOH Freed
Man
"The Freed Man" was one of the first and most crucial releases in the
burgeoning lo-fi movement, which would peak in media attention in the mid-90s
with the success of Beck, Guided By Voices, and Pavement. But while it helped
inspire and define a global movement, there's little trace of that ambition within
these tracks. Sebadoh in this incarnation are a cherishably intimate experience.
The 70-odd minutes of wayward brilliance collected here offer the listener a rare
and recommended opportunity to transport themselves to the weed-hazed bedroom
where these scraps, songs, and pranks were recorded, to imbibe deeply of the haywire
creativity that went on in these sessions. This deluxe edition re-issue has been
re-mastered and includes a whopping 52 tracks on a single disc, including many
that haven't seen the light of day until now. Liner notes by Lou Barlow and Eric
Gafney. (Domino) MORE

BERT SUSANKA
Onward Christian Slater
Bert Susanka, founder of The Ziggens, has always wanted to put out a solo record-an
album on which he could express himself freely, without songwriting restrictions
and deadlines. So, Cornerstone RAS gave him that opportunity, and he did not disappoint.
This is clearly Susanka's most personal album to date, with songs of triumph,
heartbreak, and all emotions in between. The Ziggens enjoyed floating the crafty
moniker "cowpunk surfabilly" that was once slapped on them, and Susanka's
songs still reflect this genre-bending playfulness. But, they also capture a more
decisively crafted production that is a reflection of his own sensibilities, without
the four-headed Ziggens monster he enjoyed writing hundreds of songs with over
the past few decades. Reference points from the Dead Milkmen and Beach Boys lead
to tender introspective ballads and self-deprecating takes on suburban survival,
alling add up to what will certainly be a widely talked-about album-one that has
been brewing for years.(Cornerstone) MORE

BISHOP ALLEN Broken
String
In 2006, the band self-released an EP every month of the year. Fifty-eight songs
later, Bishop Allen's pop smarts sound timeless, escaping the indie-pop idiom
and revealing a language informed by The Kinks, Dylan, and The Zombies. On this,
their sophomore album, the band made a quantum leap. Of its twelve songs, ten
are reworded tracks from the EPs and two are previously unreleased. These are
not just re-recordings. The songs' arrangements have grown, the production is
lush, the lyrics are front and center, and the band's evolution has reached a
new level. "The Broken String" is poised to be the pop soundtrack of
the summer.(Dead Oceans) MORE

More than just music, this unique box set is a musical, visual and historical
exploration into the history of Preservation Hall. After Hurricane Katrina, Benjamin

experience that bridges the past to the present. This new release represents a
collaborative co-production between Allan Jaffe (1936-1987) and his son Benjamin
Jaffe. In addition, The Hurricane Sessions is a collaboration between the classic
lineup with the contemporary PHJB ensemble of John Brunious, Carl Leblanc, Rickie
Monie, Joe Lastie Jr. Walter Payton, Frank Demond, Ralph Johnson and Darryl Adams.
Made in New Orleans demonstrates the sustainability of New Orleans Jazz as a timeless
cultural art form. Made in New Orleans is a treasure trove of rare recordings,

COREY HARRIS Zion
Crossroads
The culmination of this journey is Zion Crossroads, Harris' debut recording on
Telarc. Inspired and informed by his travels to various parts of Africa over the
past decade, the album captures some of the most enduring elements of African-American
music - blues, reggae, soul and so much more - and infuses them with a sense of
history, social consciousness and spirituality. Harris gets help on the path to
Zion Crossroads from producer Michael G, the guitarist and co-founder of Easy
Star All-Stars, the New York-based reggae collective that crafted Dub Side of
the Moon (2003) and Radiodread (2006). Like Harris, he sees the project as a powerful
convergence of style, vision, history and culture: "The marriage of Corey's
socially conscious lyrics and the revolutionary sounds of reggae make for a potent
musical cocktail that arouses the body, mind, and spirit." (Telarc) MORE

ZOMBIES Into The Afterlight
Almost a decade in the making, "Into The Afterlife"is a natural sequel
to the acclaimed box set "Zombie Heaven", this compilation is essentially
"what they did next". The Zombies split in April 1968 upon the completion
of their masterwork "Odessey & Oracle". Songwriters Rod Argent and
Chris White busied themselves forming a production company, whilst the other band
members, including lead singer Colin Blunstone, depressed by the lack of recognition
for "Odessey", retreated back to 'civvy street'. As a special bonus,
the disc contains special mixes of Zombies material that showcase the orchestral
overdubs that were added for their aborted RIP project, plus a rare vintage live
cut. Over half of "Into The Afterlife's" contents is unissued, and indeed,
ninety percent has never appeared on CD before. Add to that detailed notes that
clarifies this murky yet fascinating period in the group's history and this becomes
a worthy addition to the perfectly-formed discography of the Zombies.(Big Beat) MORE

The ex-Hot Club of Cowtown violinist stretches her musical vision on her self-titled
debut. James, one of the premier young stars of hot jazz, has put together a collection
of standards and originals that showcase both western swing and string jazz, and
her incredible playing. James evokes a bygone era smoky clubs and all-night dances
without sounding like she`s a curio piece brought out to be shown once in awhile,
only to be placed back in storage. She makes the music live and breathe. Legendary

BISHOP ALLEN Broken String LP

ANASTASIO Horseshoe Curve LP
Instrumental from start to finish, The Horseshoe Curve showcases Anastasio's Afro-Cuban-influenced
compositions, replete with five-part horn arrangements, tight breaks, multiple
percussionists, and of course, Anastasio's soulful, nimble guitar work. The Horseshoe
Curve is a journey, an inventive exploration of the big band funk that Anastasio
has been steeped in for the larger part of the decade.(Red Ink) MORE

SEBADOH Freed Man
LP

SILVER JEWS Bright
Flight (Reis) LP "A collection of David Berman's witty, poignant,
somehow reassuring songs. Though the easygoing sound of this album is in keeping
with the rest of Berman's work, the Silver Jews' mercurial lineup affects the
feel of each album. This time, Berman's sweetheart, Cassie Marrett, handles the
backing vocal duties instead of sometime-Silver Jew Stephen Malkmus..." --All

What's
Happening Around the MOM Offices | This
week you will read about the newest member of the team and alt-country going mainstream.
IT
IS TRUE THAT WE HAVE A NEW TEAM MEMBER at Momcentral, although contributions to
actual work might be minimal. Last Friday Your Jester was pulling in to park when
something unusual was spotted in the street. Your Jester always thinks there is
drama unfolding. Even knowing that conclusions are usually reached before reality
is checked doesn't stop the mental gymnastics from proceeding every single time.
Your Jester expected the eye-catching item to wind up being the plastic tray from
a Lean Cuisine that had blown from a trash can and slid over near the curb.
Upon
approach it was clear this was more than a plastic tray, it was a turtle... or
tortoise.... It could be narrowed down that much. It was alive. It was in the
street near the gutter but headed towards the middle of the street (slowly, of
course) and it appeared to be intact. Your Jester has no idea what he would have
done with an injured turtle/tortoise, let alone having a clue how to deal with
a fully intact, fully operational reptile.
An
non-exhaustive chase resulted in the grabbing of the fleeing animal. Now, I've
got a living animal in my hand and absolutely no idea what to do with it. Stray
dogs... got it. There is a process. I've done that too many times to count (at
least seven times). Stray cats.... The Queen and Your Jester have experience taking
in and placing cats (which is a challenging process with a house full of dogs
that are somewhat intent on "meeting" the cat)..
Lots
of ridiculous details are omitted that involve asking every single neighbor if
they had a runaway turtle. You get some funny looks from people you have one of
those casual "waving to say hello" relationships when you actually go
up to say hi and ask if they knew who owned an escape-artist reptile.
Of
course, these kinds of dramas only occur on weekends. Dogs get sick on holiday
weekends. It is a Murphy's Law kind of thing. If the dog needs to go to the vet
for an emergency, it is guaranteed that emergency only occurs when triple-time
rates on in effect. So, Your Jester has what has been initially identified as
a tortoise in a box in the backyard with chicken wire over the top. This is temporary
home while we search for the owner, likely to be a six year old who took Sparky
out to play in the yard and then lost track after running inside to watch a Dora
the Explorer marathon on cable.
On
Sunday, The Queen and Your Jester accepted our karmic fate as rescuers of wayward
animals and headed off to the local pet shop. A quick look at a reptile book revealed
we had a turtle. An aquatic turtle. A ten gallon tank, gravel, pump, turtle "ramp"
and a fake plastic plant later, we were now the "proud" guardians of
a turtle. Male or female? No idea. Age? Not a clue. Healthy? Who knows how long
'it" was walking down a very hot street in the middle of the summer in the
San Fernando Valley.
Currently,
the turtle is named Iggy Eppy Calvin "Nuke" Lalouch. Consigliere calls
him Iggy. The Mangler calls him Nuke. Both have lengthy and detailed explanations
as to how they came up with the names. To be fair, Satchel Moses, our lab mix,
received four days of naming discussion before The Queen called to say she was
at a pet store. The store gave her a free tag, because hs is a rescue, so she
hoped the name Satchel was ok with Your Jester because that's what was going on
the tag.
A
new is being sought for Iggy Nuke, but for now he is an object of fascination
for the dogs as they watch him swim around his aquarium.
OVER
TEN YEARS AGO A MAGAZINE AND A MAIL ORDER COMPANY BOTH LAUNCHED at about the same
time. There was a burgeoning "scene" of musicians who were drawing on
traditional country, adding in some rock ethic and create a hybrid of the two
that took on the name alt.country. The press lionized the music as the next big
thing, proclaiming its greatness while counting the moments that they could gleefully
dance on its grave after its inevitable failure to capture the imagination of
mainstream America. The name stuck, even if efforts by many to become rich and
famous turned into a more realistic "some artists can actually make a living"
form of music.
Fast
forward to a small, beloved Canadian television show about teens growing up, the
previously mentioned "Degrassi." In an episode earlier this week, one
overly handsome cast member invites an overly beautiful cast member to go see
a band playing at the local club. His invite includes the phrase, "They are
an alt.country band." There! A decade later and the phrase has entered the
lexicon of kids (and Canadian television writers).
You
can keep your hip-hopping; teen-popping; rap-metaling; angsty overwrought screamo-ing.
Alt.country is big with the kids.... on a small soapy Canadian teen TV show.
Until
next week,

Queen, Your Jester, and The Mangler | |
