IT'S
A CRACKER! BEAN PICKERS UNION Potlatch Singer/
songwriter/ guitarist Chuck Melchin expresses loss, regret and some bitterness
in this heartland roots-rock. The Boston-based band draws on the acoustic leanings
of luminaries like John Mellencamp's mid-80s bands or an early Jayhawks. A potlatch.
is a highly complex ceremony that includes the celebration of births, rites of
passages, weddings, funerals, puberty, and honoring of the deceased. Bean Pickers
Union try to capture the nuances of this ceremony with a cohesive album that sets
tone, works your emotions and provides redemption and a very satisfying conclusion.

WILL KIMBROUGH
Ep
Recorded at home, the EP is a more intimate work. Essentially a folk record, the
new collection includes Eastern-flavored blues romps, an old time prison waltz,
love ballads, a working man's anthem, a woozy travelogue and a spiritual thrown
in for good measure. Not only does EP showcase Kimbrough's talents as a multi-instrumentalist
on slide, flattop guitar and banjo, but also his warm vocals and literate songwriting.

HEAVY TRASH
Going Way Out With Heavy Trash
The bastard cousin to Jon Spencer's genre-demolishing Blues Explosion, Heavy Trash
features Speedball Baby's guitar brawler and producer extraordinaire Matt Verta-Ray
in a project that drinks down the best of roots, R&B and rock-a-billy. Going
Way Out with Heavy Trash, the second offering from these kings of buzz saw guitars
and late night incantations, was recorded in three different countries and features
an international cast of musicians - Canada's the Sadies, members of Denmark's
Tremolo Beer Gut and Powersolo, and New York City's Simon Chardiet and Phil Hernandez.
Heavy Trash is what the name implies - filthy and hard - the soundtrack to the
strung-out road trip from which there can be no return. (Yep Roc) MORE

MICHELLE
SHOCKED ToHeavenURide
The performance that ToHeavenURide comprises was digitally captured at the 2003
Telluride Bluegrass Festival - and this despite the fact that Shocked's contract
had specifically stated "no recording." But because that year's festival
was being documented for a projected DVD by a production crew with no knowledge
of the contractual stipulation, Shocked's entire set just happened to be captured
for posterity - assuming it was ever unearthed. The recording would have continued
to be hidden away in binary limbo had it not occurred to Shocked's new manager
to inquire about the possibility of its existence, and there it was, preserved
in the virtual amber of a Pro Tools file. When she heard this group of songs,
Shocked realized how perfectly they connected with her present musical and spiritual
direction. (Mighty Sound) MORE

CARRIE BIELL When
Your Feel Hit The Stars
"When Your Feet Hit the Stars is an excellent, soft album featuring thoughtful,
pensive, and ultimately hummable pop tunes. Biell's music sounds something like
a cross between Janis Ian and Suzanne Vega and yet...she never gives the impression
that she is aping or copying the sound of others. The arrangements on this album
fit the songs perfectly. These tracks have a nice thick sound that is pushed over
the edge thanks to some exceedingly tasty pedal steel guitar playing. Carrie has
a beautiful, sincere voice that is immediately effective and real...and her songs
seem to come straight from her heart." -- babysue.com MORE

IMPERIAL TEEN
The Hair, The TV, The Baby & The Band
The Hair the TV the Baby & the Band is the first Imperial Teen record in over
5 years, but it never misses a beat. It's a career defining album for sure. On
first listen you can just feel how much fun these guys and gals are having making
music together. From the upbeat shimmy of "Shim Sham" and "Sweet
Potato", to the more reflective cool of "Room With A View" and
"What You Do"; from the full on romp of "Everything" and "One
Two", to the seductive vamp of "Fallen Idol"...every song seems
pitch perfect. You can sense that this is a band that is comfortable in its own
skin. Recorded over three weeks at Kingsize Studios with longtime collaborators
Steve McDonald (Redd Kross) and Anna Waronker (That Dog), The Hair... captures
the raw spontaneity and chemistry that make Imperial Teen a such unique group
of friends and musicians. (Merge) MORE

PROSSER
Prosser
Prosser is the new project from Eric Woodruff (formerly of Bellingham, WA, space
rock band Delay). His self-titled debut release is a melding of Indie Rock and
Alt-Country, with some psychedelic and folk influences thrown in for good measure.
Vocals , cello and a few keyboards are sprinkled on top layers and layers of the
jangly guitars that form the basis of the sound. It is a modern take on a classic
sound, that many will fall in love with. Fans of Nick Drake, Red Stars Theory,
Elliot Smith, Bedhead, Wilco, and all manner of heartbreak-induced whiskey drinking
music will not be able to resist. (Clickpop Records) MORE

PATTI SCIALFA
Play It As It Lays
"In her day job, Scialfa has a voice that's often compared to Ronnie Spector's
brassy wail, but on these tightly focused, grown-up vignettes about sin and salvation
and the hard-fought struggle for honesty in a relationship, she slurs and bebops
like Rickie Lee Jones. With a crack rhythm section (including a dude named Bruce
playing on almost half the tracks), Play It As It Lays reveals a woman on the
other side of the tunnel of love -- confused, a little scared and ready for another
spin. (3.5 STARS)" Alan Light, rollingstone.com (Sony) MORE

SUZY BOGGUSS

Multi might be the best adjective to describe talented singer/songwriter Suzy
Bogguss. Multi-award-wining,multi-platinum, and as her CD Sweet Danger so expertly
proves, she's multi-faceted. She co-produced the album with famed jazz/pop keyboardist
and producer Jason Miles, who's worked with Miles Davis, Luther Vandross and Sting.
The two brought together Nashville and New York musicians, culling the best of
both worlds to create an instantly engaging, groove oriented record infused with
jazz rhythms and Bogguss' signature vocals. (Loyal Dutchess) MORE

What's
Happening Around the MOM Offices | This
week you will read about The Oracle of Buzz, favorite players of all time, and
restorative fluids.
INSPIRATION
AND AFFIRMATION comes from many places. The teachings of Buddha, the Old Testament,
the top of a cereal box (heh, thanks Edie!)... We have a new oracle, an all-seeing
force.
Did
your MOMcentral team trek to a remote village in the Himalayas? Did we enter a
sweat lodge in a sacred ceremony? It took the rotation of a turnstyle... a clockwise
rotation. And an early arrival.
The
supplier of this great wisdom was compliments of the Edwards Federal Credit Union
to the first 400 visitors to the home of the Class-A baseball team the Lancaster
Jethawks. On this particular night, $6.00 bought you a ticket to a baseball game
in a stadium that holds a capacity 3,000 fans and a free Buzz Aldrin bobble-head
doll. Aldrin, for those that might not recall, was the second man to walk on the
moon in 1969.
Ask
Buzz a question, tap his military-buzz cut head and he'll give you a a yes or
no response.
"Will
the Dodgers win the World Series this year?" Buzz shakes, "No."
"Should
we take a chance and ship a package to Spain without insuring it?" Buzz indicates,
"No, no no!"
"Is
our weekly missive getting through to our customers?" Buzz says, "Yes."
And then Buzz says, "No." How ambiguous! You would think an all-knowing
oracle could provide a definitive answer. Life, as we learn, does not always provide
the definitive.
The
Mangler is bobblehead Aldrin's Uncle Alfred, his Kato, a noble second prepared
to defend the honor of Buzz. Buzz joins The Mangler's always-growing toy collection
of both valuable and sentimental objects.
"HOW
CAN SANDY KOUFAX be your favorite baseball player of all-time? You never saw him
play." No, not another boring baseball conversation at MOMCentral (although
they are frequent and not boring). Your Jester also never saw Patsy Cline, Buddy
Holly or Elvis, but they are favorites, even if not the top of the list. Of course,
this lead to a lengthy discussion on why a favorite baseball player has to be
judged under a different criteria than a favorite band or a treasured album. The
discourse was lengthy and abstract with no absolute answer, naturally. An album
has lineage, but is still singular. Athletes might reflect the style and grace
of an earlier era, but the conversation about "being influenced by"
is usually held for a small group who adhere to a code of ethics from a past era.
The
Mangler pointed out that almost no one will go back and watch an entire sporting
event again because the outcome is known (except for a few diehard English football
fans I know), but we'll all revist albums over and over again, savoring the nuances
that time and experience reveals.
The
Mangler contends that the medium of music lends itself to revealing. To him, literature,
film, fine art and television are all inferior art forms in this respect. Sports
presents a completely set of criteria which is why The Mangler questioned Your
Jester's choice of favorite ball players.
When
asked, The Mangler proclaimed John Lowenstein (Baltimore Orioles, circa '80s)
his favorite ballplayer. And he likes chocolate ice cream. Chocolate ice cream
continues to reveal new levels of excellence.
LET'S
GET RIGHT TO GROSSING YOU OUT. The Mangler and Your Jester were packing up some
overseas orders -- The Mangler was doing all the packing, Your Jester was doing
the writing -- when we came across a DVD that was in a broken case. A quick aside,
a broken DVD case is a rarity, unlike the godforsaken CD jewel case. The creator
of the jewel case will rot in one of Dante's circles.
Upon
opening the damaged case, The Mangler checked the DVD and noticed a surface mark.
Not a gouge, not a scratch; it was a mark. He blew on the surface. No change.
He tried nose oil (hehehe), no luck. A quick rub on the shirt -- a cardinal sin!
-- did not remedy the problem.
You
know when you are a kid and have smudge on your face. You mom licks her finger
and rubs the dirty spot until she has not only taken off the dirt but also several
layers of skin. The Mangler tried the Magic Spit. A quick finger lubrication,
a rub and, behold, the scuff disappeared! Later in the day, he got a paper cut.
A little bit of spit and the bleeding stopped.
This
might not be "Virgin Mary on Grilled Cheese" quality, nor can we figure
how to auction off the spit, but it seems to have restorative powers. Next time
you see him, ask him for a lick and all wounds shall be healed!
Until
next week, The
Queen, Your Jester, and The Mangler | |
