IT'S
A CRACKER! RICH MCCULLEY Cerro Gordo Listening
to a Rich McCulley record is a lot like having a long-term relationship. You take
both for granted. Everytime Rich releases an album he nails one roots-rock gem
after another. The Pasadena Weekly's Bliss wrote, "There's a bittersweet,
Beatles-esque buoyancy to many of McCulley's pop tunes, whether he's celebrating
the simple joys of riding with his lover down Ventura Highway on "Forever
California" or ruing the pitfalls of relationships on "Forget It All
Again" ("Here comes another curveball, aren't you glad you brought your
glove / Here comes another push, can you take another shove"). Smart musicianship
and well-placed lyrical barbs a la "Once I got to know you, I couldn't drink
enough" (from "I Never Really Loved You") elevate this above typical
romantic pop." McCulley makes it all sound effortless, the sign of an artist
that reaches the average everyman, but in fact this is finely crafted roots-pop.

A CRACKER! DAVID NEWBOULD Big Red Sun Big
Red Sun was recorded while David Newbould was a itinerant resident of Austin.
Newbould sings with an exhilaration, avoiding the overwrought, instead falling
squarely into warmth and passionate. Combined with a strong ear for melody and
a directness in his storytelling Newbould nails this collection of introspective
folk and traditional country. Newbould recruited Cindy Cashdollar, Redd Volkaert,
Jon Dee Graham and others to help him on his first full length after releasing
a series of EPs. Big Red Sun has a glowing emotional center that makes it a perfect
way to brighten a gloomy day. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (North Star Media) REVIEW

Is Steve Robinson an Englishman overtly influenced by '60s folk-pop or is he,
at his heart a disciple of The Byrds, The Everly Brothers and other harmony-drenched
luminaries who happens to be from the UK? Robinson, working out of St. Petersburg,
Florida -- a decidedly un-English city -- creates pop gems teeming with mandolin,
harmony. touches of English folk, Irish lilt and baroque pop. Robinson straddles
his English background and his American musical seasoning creating a collection
of gorgeous roots-pop that is apologetically Beatle-esque. -- Jeff Weiss. Miles

HENRY Civillians In
the mid-90s Joe Henry was critically respected musician, lopped in with the burgeoning
alt.country scene. His career at a loggerheads, he ditched the straightforward
singer-songwriter approach and started experimenting with his sound. The decade-long
journey took him through studio wizardry, sound-scape experimentation, jazz, r&b,
and into an acclaimed career as a producer. A decade later, he returned to his
roots as a straight-ahead songwriter. The experience of his journey through the
wilds of music is evident in this magnificent album. Soulful, warm, and heartbreaking.
Those that wondered where the Henry of a decade ago had gone, can come to this
album comfortable that his journey was worth it. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music

AUTOGRAPH
ALERT Autographed Copies While Supplies Last! KIERAN
KANE KEVIN WELCH & FATS KAPLIN Kane Welch Kaplin
As
songwriters, performers, innovators and founders of the influential Dead Reckoning
record label, Kieran Kane and Kevin Welch have made a career of letting the song
lead the way. In the process, they midwifed a new genre of American roots music,
blazing a trail for other artists to explore and develop. Yet their modus operandi
remains the same - to craft and compose with no goal other than to let the song
realize itself. In 2003 they joined forces with Fats Kaplin, the renowned multi-instrumentalist
and "this generation's Ry Cooder", to create an Americana super group
that makes music with roots parameters but in the spontaneity and vibe of a jazz
recording. Joined this time around by Kieran's son Lucas, "Kane Welch Kaplin"
picks up where "Lost John Dean" left off - featuring an entire album
of roots music gems from the pens of the original Godfathers of Americana. The
groove is tighter, the tunes sparser - they've gone from being a group of accomplished
individuals to a solid soulful unit. Album cover art painted by Kieran Kane. (Compass) REVIEW

BILLY
JOE SHAVER Storyteller: Live At The Bluebird 1992
This
live recording from Nashville's hallowed Bluebird Café features some of
Shaver's most well-loved tunes. Shaver is joined by his son, Eddy, on tunes like
"Georgia on a Freight Train" "Honky Tonk Heroes" and "Chunk
of Coal." The performance is a rare acoustic take on material that the pair
would go on to perform and record in the more rock-oriented group Shaver. With
liner notes by Todd Snider and endearing and humorous commentary between songs,
the album is a must-have for fans of one of America's most storied and recorded
songwriters. Tracks Listing: Georgia On A Fast Train/Willy The Wandering Gypsy

songs on North Star Deserter are some of the most bracing and intense heard from

at others, incongruously hopeful. Stripped-down songs like "Warm", "Rustic

explosive rockers like "Everything I Say" and "Debriefing",
while "Glossolalia" and "You Are Never Alone" feature wonderful
arrangements and group singing. (Constellation) MOR

TAYLOR BAND Dark Days Dark
Days was produced and engineered in the mountains of Washington State at Cascade
Studios. The CD (produced by Jackson Taylor and Ronnie Belaire, and engineered
by Allen Larsen) contains 12 tracks and features the debut single "Lonely,"
a tale of emotion that Jackson knows all too well. Other tracks include "Outlaws
Ain't Wanted Here No More," which is a true account of Jackson's experiences
in the country music industry that eventually pushed him to take his own musical
path. Also featured on the new album is a cover of the tune "Honky Tonk Heroes,"
written by Billy Joe Shaver, one of Jackson's favorite music outlaws. Billy Joe
Shaver summed up it up best when he said, "Jackson's songs are so real and
honest, you know straight off he's been there and done that. He writes and sings
like he lives, great songs that I believe will live forever." (Smith Entertainment)

MOOT DAVIS
Already Moved On Already
Moved On shows a clear progression from Moot Davis debut self-titled effort -
and demonstrates that even music that speaks the voice of the common man can evolve
to a higher plane. With his first record, Moot gained tremendous critical acclaim
for his talent for writing and performing passionate, soulful honky-tonk music
that drew from legends of the genre like Hank Williams and Webb Pierce while bringing
the art form into the new Millennium. Already Moved On picks up where "Moot
Davis" left off, embodying timeless songwriting, a definite "attitude,"
and a certain edge that lets the listener know this is no throwback to an earlier
time. It's music that reflects the past while setting the bar for the future.
Already Moved On runs the gamut of American roots music from barroom anthems to
highway songs to country ballads - all colored by Moot's insight on the tenuous
relationship between men and women and the corresponding love and heartache (Little

CHARLEMAGNE
We Can Build An Island Charlemagne,
the songs of Carl Johns brought to life with help from many friends, was born
in a basement in Wisconsin in the middle of winter in 2003 as a side-project to
the band Noahjohn. Since then Charlemagne has released two albums and a trio of
singles, as well as a number of compilation appearances. Detour Allure finds Johns
creating less of a singular, songwriter-esque release, instead opting to incorporate
more of a full band aesthetic, even utilizing other musicians to assist in the
album's creative process. Crammed with plenty of melodies, hooks, reverb, keys,
beats and handclaps, Detour Allure shows Charlemagne drafting a modern, psychedelic
pop album, with plenty of conviction to boot. (Sidecho Records) MOR

JOHNATHAN RICE
Further North Johnathan
entered Sound City Studios in Van Nuys, CA (Tom Petty, Nirvana) in the eerily
warm winter of 2006. Jason Lader (Vietnam, Rilo Kiley) and Farmer Dave Scher (Beachwood
Sparks, All Night Radio) completed the three man production team. It's quite obvious
even from a cursory first listen that the album was recorded live and not much
else was added in post. Whereas the first record tried to take on the world and
a whole host of musical genres, this new album stays relentlessly focused on the
song, the band, and that voice. The sound is warm and the words are at once hot
and cold. It's an optimistic apocalypse with something for you and your weird
uncle. The lyrics cut as deep as you let them, and even if you don't pay attention
to that sort of thing there are enough deep pockets and American guitars to keep
you nodding your head in the drive through line. (Reprise WEA) MOR

DAVID
DONDERO Simple Love LP
Few songwriters have experienced and expressed the sinking depths and uplifting
optimism of humanity like Dondero, and his ability to shine a light on the human
condition is inspiring. "Simple Love" is a poignant collection of songs
woven with sentimentality, contempt, humor, and lust. Veering away from the acoustic
folk arrangements of previous albums this record broadens its instrumental library
and tackles much darker subjects of loss, lost love, and death. A collection of
literate, impressionistic, folk-blues mini-epics. (Team Love) MORE

RILO
KILEY The Black Light (Bonus CD) LP "Because
Rilo Kiley's More Adventurous was a triumph of the well-made narrative song, its
markedly terser and beatier follow-up, which is also the band's true major-label
debut, will be accused of sellout. Instead, it's yet more adventurous, a prosperous
band's challenge to its comfortable cult. Always too cute for serious indie cred,
Jenny Lewis slips four songs about dangerous sex in which she herself might be
indulging -- right now, in her pretty prosperity -- into music that's defined
rather than just decorated by its stylistic flirtations. Repetitive if not wordless
refrains pop up everywhere, one in Spanish with a Latin beat; here a soul horn
section, there a Fleetwood Mac homage, there a synth outro and almost nowhere
much guitar-band alt-rock. The emotions aren't as detailed as in the past, but
they're no less intense...4 STARS" -- Robert Christgau, rollingstone.com

1982, a few years before they released their 1987 debut, John Flansburgh and John
Linnell have been They Might Be Giants, an independent band named after a 1971
George C. Scott movie who are, to echo their own description of their current
collaborators The Dust Brothers, pop musicians unto themselves. Their work provides,
in the prescient judgment of The SPIN Alternative Record Guide (1995) "a
fabulous example of just how far the concept of punk can stretch." In subsequent
years, They Might Be Giants have elongated things further, although never to the
breaking point. They have released twelve albums, of which The Else, a wildly
rocking and sturdy collection of thirteen unfailingly acute songs co-produced
by The Dust Brothers (Beck, Beastie Boys), is the latest. It includes a 23 song
bonus disc with the album's first edition and features Linnell (who sings and
plays keyboards, primarily) and Flansburgh (who sings and plays guitar, primarily)
working in tightest accord with their current band of guitarist Dan Solder Miller,
bassist Danny Weinkauf, and drummer Marty Beller. (Zoe) MOR

What's
Happening Around the MOM Offices |
This
week you will read about music of old people, secret professions, and the competitive
spirit.
IT IS ALWAYS, "ME, ME, ME." This week Your Jester
is going to devote the missive to our fine customers and bands. As Your Jester
has expressed in the past, selling music and dvds is the part that pays the bills
(and much better than having a "straight" job) but the gravy is the
people we meet.
GEORGE
FROM OHIO called earlier this week. He's always very good about knowing exactly
what he wants, gives The Mangler a little grief (in a good way) , and regales
us with stories. Recently he went into a chain book store who also sells a lot
of music. Wilco was playing in the store. George, a music geek through and through,
engaged the clerk cashier in conversation. This is a reenactment of the conversation.
Your Jester is not attempting to take artistic license with the recapping, just
my short term memory is shot. George asks, "Who is this that's playing?"
Your Jester is sure George knew, he was just making polite opening conversation.
The cashier replies, "It is Wilco." George says, "I don't think
I like this song." Sure, it is a blasphemous statement, but it is George's
conversation, not Your Jester's. Cashier, who is now being referred to as "the
snot nosed kid" as George tells the story, replies, "Is it just this
song, or have you heard the whole thing?" George retorts, "I've been
listening to the whole thing while I've been shopping and I don't really like
it." The cashier, now being referred to as "that little twit,"
replies, "A lot of old people like Wilco."
The
way the story was related, the kid wasn't being a wise guy since George didn't
mention the "little twit" having that tell-tale sarcastic smirk Your
Jester has been accused of deploying on more than one occasion. It sounded like
the kid was doing his best to be polite but couldn't help but say the things that
an older and once hip music fan never wants to hear: You're old and out of touch.
One
of the ongoing conversations around MOMCentral is us trying to relate to the "kids"
music. The Queen and The Jester's 17 year old nephew loves a band called The Go
Team. Think Toni Basil fronting The Cure. Cheerleader vocals and new wave instruments.
Ugh... annoying stuff but then we found Toni Basil completely annoying and The
Cure to be more palatable, but from the wrong side of the Atlantic.
Hang
around a 17 year old and his friends for an afternoon who have the "music
geek" disease and you are guaranteed to feel out of touch. Ultimately, who
cares. His music choices blow and our music rules!
A
MUSICIAN WHO IS TWO ALBUMS DEEP into his career and working on his third (with
Will Kimbrough!). During conversation he revealed he makes his living as an attorney
in the Gulf Coast area who is representing victims of Hurricane Katrina against
the insurance companies who are trying to classify storm damage as "flood
related." He playfully asked me to not reveal his name because it would damage
his musician "cred." Attorney is one of the prominent jobs for lots
of musicians we deal with. Reality, as you know, it is extremely tough to make
a living as a musician, let alone cover basic costs. If you can be your own sugar
daddy, life is a little easier.
Out
of respect to him, I'll keep his name secret until he tells me otherwise. I will,
though, reveal that he was a school classmate of Kimbrough. Your Jester asked,
"Where you guys in a band together?" He replied, "No Will was a
superstar guitar player even in 7th grade. He ripped through a Led Zeppelin song
completely stunning the crowd with how great he was."
Your
Jester remembers talent shows from middle school. The winner was always a guy
named Jack who played rock drum solos. He was pretty great for a 12 year old.
The rest of the time he was nearly failing out of school, but put him behind a
drum kit and he was a star. I have no idea what happened to him.
Kimbrough,
of course, has gone on to record several acclaimed solo albums along with pairing
with the wonderful Tommy Womack in both the Bis-Quits and Daddy. Kimbrough makes
his living playing guitar for Rodney Crowell. And, he's a tremendously nice guy.
Our
mystery artist makes tremendous records, but keeps his identity secret, so he
can fight the good fight during the day and rock at night. If he adds a few skills,
he will be a modern day Buckaroo Banzai, getting calls to save the world from
presidents.
LESS
SUPER-HERO-ISH but strangely impressive is Jason from Michigan. He calls about
once a week an places an order. A very nice guy, but not very chatty. We'll talk
a little about music and then he is off. A couple of weeks ago he revealed he
needed a package because he was traveling. The Mangler asked, "Are you taking
a vacation?" Jason replied, "Kind of. I'm in a regional Scrabble tournament.
If I place high enough I'll go to the nationals." He then revealed he is
a nationally ranked player.
The
part Your Jester liked about it -- besides have "spelling envy" -- was
the commitment to it for the purposes of playing, having fun and advancing. Not
unlike choosing to make music even though reality there is no payoff at the end
other than achievement. Maybe there is a Weekend Edition lapel pin in his future.
Like
Your Jester said, this is the really interesting stuff. We bond over the music
and then find out the rest of it. Susan stayed up all night to read Harry Potter
the night it came out. Dale has spent a lot of time working as an announcer for
the local wrestling promotion. Brett just got his doctorate in Environmental Sociology.
Jason gave up music to pursue a master in creative writing at Iowa. Rick calls
up just to give The Mangler crap (and eventually gets around to ordering something).
This is the gravy. It is not likely that The Mangler, Your Jester and The Queen
will ever meet most of you face to face. But, we know you already
Until
next week, The
Queen, Your Jester, and The Mangler | |
