Bluegrass Diaries The
Bluegrass Diaries picks up where 2006s Grammy nominated last bluegrass album Bluegrass
left off allowing Lauderdale to indulge in his passion for intricate picking and
foot stompin' with his friends. The album includes Jesse Cobb on Mandolin, Richard
Bailey on Banjo, Jay Weaver on bass, Cody Kilby on guitar and Aaron Till on fiddle
as well as many other special guests. On The Bluegrass Diaries Lauderdale blends
bluegrass chops with his signature turn of phrase. At root, the album is a metaphor
for Lauderdale's entire career; switchblade-sharp, honest and starkly American.

PAJAMAS Box of Secrets Northern Gothic Season Two
"The
Green Pajamas, mining childhood nostalgia on their new album... Box Of Secrets
is a conceptual album, a follow up if you will to 'Northern Gothic' (Camera Obscura,
2002), with three intertwining themes running through it: local legends, characters,
and personal mythology. Inspired less by arcane literature and more by The Green
Pajamas three songwriters' own childhood experiences: 70's TV movies dealing with
gothic themes of murder, secrets, the supernatural; along with small town life
in the Pacific Northwest, the vague setting for many of the songs is the Washington
coast. The mostly fictional stories enclosed within this 'Box of Secrets' evoke
a shared memory or that spooky sweet nostalgia, whether lived or not. Though the
subject matter is dark, the music and songs themselves promise to be a bit more
rocking and psychedelic, moreso than their last true studio album '21st Century
Séance', which explored more mellow moods

CAROLYN MARK
Nothing Is Free Some
things are just meant to be. Birds were born to fly, politicians were born to
lie, and Carolyn Mark was born to make music. Ever since she first took the stage
as Templeton the rat in her elementary school's musical version of Charlotte's
Web, show business has been the main driving force in Mark's life. After coming
to the obvious conclusion that musicians were much more fun to hang around with
than actors, she formed her first band, all-girl surf-twang popsters The Vinaigrettes.
It was the beginning of a love affair with music, musicians, and the road that
that has lasted over fifteen years. Nothing Is Free, described by Mark as her
"woodsy, introspective album," was recorded by Myke Hall at Beaver Point
Hall in British Columbia. Along for the ride were guitar and bass virtuoso Paul
Pigat (Cousin Harley), guitar and mandolin heavyweight Paul Rigby (Neko Case),
expert vocalist Emilie Rhone (Fishing Derby, Antler), and vivacious violinist
and vocalist Diona Davies (Po' Girl, Geoff Berner, ESL). Additional help was ably
rendered by Allison Russell and Awna Teixeira of Po' Girl, and the mythical Calvin
Dick (Neckbeard). (Mint Records) MORE

MATTHEW GRIMM Dawn`s
Early Apocalypse
Matthew "Banger" Grimm, principal songwriter of New York`s Hangdogs,
offers an unflinching look under the plastic coated complacency shield of America`s
political coverall. Tart, biting, with kid gloves left in the bin, Grimm describes
his new material as art that "punches you in the throat." He doesn`t
mince words and he doesn`t excuse the "blue" language, because that`s
the way he talks. But when he sings lines like "Before the meek claim our
inheritance you`d better `Kill The Poor`", you clearly sense the sharp irony
imbued in his anti-holy war ode. And with his now familiar nasal-y twang, he vents
a roots-punk protest record of entertaining weight; the heady stuff you would
expect from a graduate of political science and journalism. And, no doubt, from
a bar room demonstrator such as he. Grimm now resides in Iowa City, where he can
blatantly exorcise -- with crunchy guitar in hand - his First Amendment rights
with the help of band members Jason Berge, Matt Winegardner and Eric Straumanis.
Produced by Peter Lubin and Pete Anderson, the rockin` Dawn`s Early Apocalypse
also features support from Charles Pettus (Tears For Fears), Doug Pettibone (Lucinda
Williams) and Dusty Wakeman (Dwight Yoakam). -- Robinson, Miles Of Music (self-released)

HANGDOGS Wallace
`48
Henry Wallace, vice president to FDR, ran on the 3rd party Progressive ticket
in 1948, crusading for the common man. Matthew Grimm finds some natural kinship
with the fellow expatriate Iowan as he and the Dogs bust and blast through 13
tracks, beer-steeped, pissed off and fun as ever. They lament an apathetic and
misinformed young America, and skewer everyone from work-a-day corporate drones
to `new-country` music starlets - challenging these lip-glossed lightweights over
a loping country shuffle, "If you`re so country, then Drink Yourself To Death".
Along with cutting insights and kick-ass alt-country, they`ve got some beautiful
balladry here too, wringing new emotion from a cover of "Midnight Train To
Georgia" and the heartbreaker "She`s Leaving You". The guys again
prove they`re as smart as they are drunk, as melodic as they are malicious. (Crazyhead)

The 2006 release from West Virginia`s Rust Kings emphasizes the band`s acoustic
playing and three-part harmonies. Jeanne Hoffman, who joined the band in 2003,
added a soft counter balance to Allen Sizemore`s hearty vocals. The band`s move
to a mountain sound, dropping the drums and `roots-rock` of their last release,
suits this lineup of music veterans. Recorded in a living room, around a couple
of mics, playing off of each other`s energy with limited overdubs, Hotel West
Virginia captures the feeling of a warm summer night out on the porch, picking
with family and friends. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (Dren) REVIEW

POLYPHONIC SPREE Live
From Austin Texas DVD From
the vaults of the award winning PBS Austin City Limits TV show, this release is
from the acclaimed Live From Austin, TX series. Through all the years of Austin
City Limits, there probably has never been a night quite like this. From the opening
processional through the crowd, through the harp solos, cymbal crashes and rousing
choruses, the many members of Polyphonic Spree, all wearing their floor-long choir
robes of every color of the rainbow, lifted the show to new heights on that sultry
night in August, 2004. It all began four years earlier inside the head of Dallas
punk rocker Tim DeLaughter, but not even he knew where his imagination would take
him. (New West) MORE

What's
Happening Around the MOM Offices |
This
week you will read about people wanting to talk, and the weird go pro, and sneaking
one in. MAYBE THE MANGLER and Your Jester are overly "talky"
when we are on the phone. Most companies with an inbound toll-free number want
the CSR (industry lingo for Customer Service Representatives) to get the issue
dealt with and off the phone as quickly as possible. Time is money and all that.
Hogwash! Last week we mentioned some regulars who happened to stand out in Your
Jester's feeble mind while composing this missive. Maybe it is like a drug, but
we can't help but ask. This week Rusty from Arizona is moving his 5,000 albums.
"Uh, Rusty, how are you going to sort them?" A completely geeky High
Fidelity question, but in this world it is, um, interesting, I guess. He used
to try and sort them by genre. Now, he's going with alpha because he realized,
as MOM did awhile back, that too much of this music doesn't conveniently fit into
a specific category. Joe from PA wanted to get something to give to his
son's doctor, as a small token of his appreciation. Next time Joe calls I'll get
the report on how the doctor liked the disc. And, so it goes. The downside
of this is when folks disappear. They just stop calling and, like a season-ending
cliff hanger of a cancelled TV show we have no idea how it turns out. Kevin from
Fresno was almost customer number one in 1992. We haven't heard from him in a
year. Tor from the land where sunshine during the day must be getting shorter
and shorter, had a family tragedy. We will never know how that turns out because
that's the way it is. We get close to the regulars and take it all very
personally. It is so worth it. "WHEN THE GOING GETS WEIRD, the
weird go pro." The great Hunter S. Thompson must've look forward to the baking
summer of MOMCentral 2007. How else do you explain seemingly the randomly strange
instant messages between The Mangler, Your Jester, The Consigliere. The Exotic
Agent of Travel, and The Sox Homer. Earlier this week Your Jester was accused
of being The Corinthian. When questioned what that might have meant, Your Jester
received a reply message that said, "Don't try to deny it by pretending you
don't know." Today, there was a completely out-of-context message about blue
water and Tidy Bowl. At the same time an argument raged over Euell Gibbon's line
from the Grape Nuts commercials back in the '70s. Has the sun baked too many brains?
Maybe we need to sell hats.
The
Mangler infuses his IMs with a particularly medievel tone. The Consigliere frequently
demands co-workers get fired. The Exotic one will ask me if I know anyone who
might be interested in really cool diving adventures and then lecture me on how
a reef is formed. All via IM.
I
know more about the Red Sox courtesy of Sox Homer as he frets his eay through
the long 2007 season, worrying about lingering moments of The Curse.
Of
course, Your Jester is referred to as The Curse by The Mangler due to some arcane
moment during the baseball season where Your Jester's rooting for one result clearly,
according to The Mangler, angered the baseball gods. Since Your Jester lacks an
American League team (RIP Dodgers 2007 season) allegiance is pliable so it is
easy to embrace the conversation about the Fenway Faithful even if Your Jester
has never been.
In
a way, communicating via IM is easier than via e-mail because you can, at least,
have the immediate moment to reply, "Did your brain turn to mush in the last
10 minutes? What are you talking about?"
The
folks who communicate to MOMCentral via IM have completely gone pro.
IF
THIS MISSIVE FEELS SO "WEDNESDAY" it is because we had to get it done
a day early. On Thursday The Queen jetted across the country to visit her dad
in North Carolina. (If you are reading this on Thursday, she is "jetting",
but let's assume it is Friday morning, you are drinking your coffee, and avoiding
work). So much of our week is based on the "feel of the day." Thursdays
are an intense race to finish the missive by 3:00 our time. Friday is the day
we concentrate on new releases and start the process over for next week.
There
is so much about this missive, the days of the week, the way you guys order (or
don't) that is rhythmic, almost musical. While this year's music has been a little
dissonant at times, we are getting used to the beat and we hope you guys are as
well.
In
the meantime, we cheated this week. You are getting Thursday thinking written
on Wednesday. Now, which episode of "My Name Is Earl" is on tonight?
Until
next week, The
Queen, Your Jester, and The Mangler | |
