A CRACKER! PRINCES
OF HOLLYWOOD A Change of Venue The
harmonies are warm and slippery. The tempos are upbeat. The songwriting is slightly
pessimistic but emotionally aware. Tris Kinsley and Harlan Dalzell, the chief
Princes, display the deft and elegant touch of craftsmen. The completed result
is a gorgeous selection of roots-pop in the Gin Blossoms or more pop-leaning Jayhawks
vein. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (self-released) REVIEW

IT'S
A CRACKER! ERIC VIEWEG Silver Lining
"Sonically spectacular and lyrically memorable, The Silver Lining is the
first album by Ottawa's own Eric Vieweg. It's an infectious collection of tender
and tortured tales about lonely hearts and night crawlers, minimum wagers and
those trying to make it. Vieweg moves it from heart wrenching in Skin & Bones
to loud pop-rock in Westboro Beach. Resuscitate flashes me back from Dinosaur
Jr's Without a Sound and Hotels & Phone booths is classic Jayhawks. Rich with
electric, pedal steel and gorgeous acoustic guitar, banjo, cello, piano and lap-tapping
percussion, The Silver Lining is an outstanding contribution to the alt-country/indie
rock sound popularized by Danny Michel, Kathleen Edwards, Jim Bryson and Golden
Smog." -- Sylvie Hill, XPress Magazine. (Case Del Rico) REVIEW

TAYLOR & CARRIE RODRIGUEZ Live From The Ruhr Triennale
Featuring
Bill Frisell on guitar and steel player Greg Leisz, the material is a mix of Taylor
chestnuts, such as "Wild Thing" and "Angel of the Morning,"
Chip & Carrie duets ("Laredo," "Let's Leave This Town")
and covers of well-known songs such as "Long Black Veil" and "Maybelline."
"That chill factor was never more in evidence than on the evenings of October
11th and 13th of October, 2005," Taylor writes on the liner notes. "Surrounded
by the magnetic sounds of Bill Frisell and the boys, Carrie and I rocked and floated
in musical places we had never been." --austin360.com. Track Listing: The

CHUCK
PROPHET Soap and Water Much
like his work with seminal L.A. band Green on Red, Chuck Prophet's first new album
in three years, Soap and Water, defies categorization. Soap and Water moves deftly
from Americana and rock to R&B, molding styles at will. A true renaissance
rocker, Prophet is a writer, producer and musician who helped define Los Angeles'
Paisley Underground scene and open the door for alt.country's rise to prominence
in the 1990s. Prophet's dark undercurrents and mythic persona have coupled with
his seat-of-the-pants creative philosophy to make him one of the most sought-after
songwriters in music today."His most satisfying album yet. The range of styles
is impressive, from the pale hip hop of 'Something Stupid' to the title track's
murky Southern funk and the swamp-blues of 'A Woman's Voice.' But he does the
f---ed-up ballad thing expertly too, even drafting a children's choir for 'Would
You LoveMe.'" - Uncut, 4 stars out of 4.(Yep Roc) MORE

TONI
PRICE Talk Memphis "Talk
Memphis is Toni Price's best album since 2001's Midnight Pumpkin. Not that Price
puts out bad or mediocre LPs. That's never been an option for the sultry vocalist
who's stolidly refused to compromise the homey vision of her music. Naturally
a lack of touring has limited Price's national profile, but that's only made the
singer a wonderful discovery for those who mine her rich blues and roots-rock.
Though she's departed Austin for new digs in California, Talk Memphis is a total
Austin production right down to longtime producer Derek O'Brien. Evoking the geography
of its title, the album Stax the deck with the soulful undertones that have always
been her stock-in-trade, burnished with the Texas Horns' powerful punch and tip
o' the Stetson to McLemore Avenue. As always, Price's exquisite ear for songs
matches her sublime alto to crystalline perfection... 3.5 STARS" Margaret

RYAN BINGHAM Mescalito
Ache
is palpable in the grooves of Mescalito, Ryan Bingham's Lost Highway debut, but
what's even more plain is the steely strength needed to overcome it -- a tenor
that's evident in both the singer-songwriter's preternaturally wizened voice and
his remarkably poignant songs, which resonate with roadhouse wisdom and rough-and-ready
border-town piquancy. Affection for tradition is evident throughout Mescalito,
an album that finds Bingham digging deep into raw-boned country (on the just-jawed
workingman's ode "Dollar a Day") and revisiting his border-town upbringing
(on the lilting, Spanish-language mariachi track "Boracho's Station").
Aided by the sympathetic production of Marc Ford -- perhaps best-known for unspooling
the sturdy rhythm guitar lines that powered the Black Crowes on their classic
'90s albums -- Bingham manages to kick both the heart and the hips into high gear.(Lost

THE SADIES
New Seasons The
Sadies return with their fifth studio album, New Seasons. Featuring the brotherly
harmonies and dazzling guitar interplay of Dallas and Travis Good, New Seasons
is the band's most confident studio album to date. The Sadies' inspired amalgam
of psychedelic country rock, surf, bluegrass and Ennio Morricone-inspired instrumentals
has made them the preeminent torchbearers of cosmic American music. This time,
the band that has previously collaborated with Neko Case, Jon Spencer and Garth
Hudson has brought Jayhawk Gary Louris to produce the album's gorgeously layered
harmonies. New Seasons proves that The Sadies have the vocal chops to equal their
instrumental mastery. (Yep Roc) MORE

MOTT THE HOOPLE Fairfield
Halls Live 1970 (English) On
the 13th September 1970 the fist ever attempt was made to capture Mott's feral
stage act on tape at The Fairfield Halls, Croydon, England and for over 30 years
the tapes of the gig were confined to the tape vaults of bassist Overend Watts. To
the legions of MTH fans around the world these recordings are the 'Holy Grail'
of unheard live MTH tracks. Recorded on The Who's then state of the art portable
eight track machine they have long become legendary not just for recording the
night the band blew the headline act Free off stage but also for the way the band
engaged with the crowd, cajoling them and challenging them. Apathy would not be
tolerated: a reaction, either good or bad was demanded. Mastered under the watchful
eye of Buffin. Released for the first time ever. (Angel Air) MORE

What's
Happening Around the MOM Offices |
This
week you will read about the surprising life of non-music fans, the purity of
the selection, and staying in the game. YOUR
JESTER WAS SURPRISED, SHOCKED EVEN, TO DISCOVER non-music fans listen to music
just like music fans. That is, they put music in the CD player and push start.
Just like we do! What a profound experience Your Jester witnessed they are just
like us (but with bad musical taste).
EVERY
DECISION HAS A BIAS. Make no mistake, putting together a Top 10 list of favorite
current releases is no exception. There are so many factors to consider:
"Who
else is putting this record on their list? Do I want to align with that person?"
"Do
I like this band or artist personally (even if I have never met them)?"
"Am
I being intentionally weird or obtuse with my selections for the sake of being
weird or obtuse?"
"Am
I supporting a mediocre record by a band I love because I love that band even
if I know the new record is kind of... below average?"
The
Queen and Your Jester worked for a small chain of independent stores that had
locations in Los Angeles and Hawaii. Once a quarter? the main office would type
-- kids, ask your mom what a typewriter is -- the lists of all of the employees
onto an 11 X 17 sheet of paper, photocopy it and send a stack to each store to
give away to customers.
We
would pour over these lists looking for bands that we might have missed on lists
of other employees who had "good taste." We'd also look for the lists
by the handful of employees that had complete disdain for the listing process
and would fill their most sacred five with jokes or fake releases. It also helped
us get to know the folks that worked at the other stores. Some good music friends
were made as a result of these lists.
The
Queen, Your Jester, and The Mangler take these lists probably too seriously. We
have new lists posting in next week's e-mail. The Mangler has reiterated several
times that he is having a challenge with the latest list. This year has been so
packed with great music that it is beginning to get harder to stand-out by comparison.
Maybe if it was January some of the current releases might have more easily made
The Mangler's list. He latched onto the Spanic Boys and Thrift Store Cowboys earlier
this year as benchmarks. Little has topped them. He struggles, trying to be
honest with the process because he takes is seriously.
You
will see the results next week.
IF
A SINGLE YEAR OF A DOG'S LIFE allegedly equals seven years of human life, how
do you quantify a single year of a musician's career? One year of career equals
20 years of human life? That's working on the "pulled out of the hat"
basis that a musician's attempt at a career last 3-4 years before they give up
(because a financially successful career as a musician is rarefied).
Over
the years MOMCentral has seen so many "One and out" bands come and go.
Occasionally, one of us will have the "What ever happened to...." conversation.
You
can only imagine, then, that when we see a new CD by an old friend, it is a moment
of celebration. This week we received a copy of the new Tim Carroll. Besides being
very talented, Tim is one of the truly nice guys. Now, will it make Your Jester's
list because he made a good record, or because it is a new record someone I like?
We
also received an advance from Grainbelt, which is an evolution of the long running
Coal Palace Kings band. It was good to hear from Howard as Your Jester always
enjoyed CPK records.
Knowing
that guys like Tim and Howard are out there still trying to do it, even though
the odds are way against either ever "making it" provides comfort in
knowing that the expression of art isn't always about trying to cash in. Sometimes,
the expression is something more primal. The Queen has to paint otherwise she
becomes a very cranky royal. Howard's note to Your Jester said the Coal Palace
Kings had disbanded but he really felt the need to play.
Sometimes
it is better to die young, leaving behind a good looking corpse. Sometimes you
hang in there and keep creating because that's what you do.
Until
next week, The
Queen, Your Jester, and The Mangler | |
