CARROLL The Devil Is A Busy Man
Five years since his last release, Tim Carroll is still one of the hottest roots
rock guitar players around. Carroll's keeps his music unadorned, filling his songs
with a wink and a grin, while delivering sing-along choruses in a joyful nasally
twang. Carroll steeps his songs in country, rock, roadhouse blues, and more rock,
making is all feel effortless, natural and alive. Carroll, as he has done for
over a decade, delivers another solid set. The Devil might be busy but the music
world might be better off if Tim wouldn't wait five years between releases. --

DEAL Roll Kevin
Deal is foot-stomping Texas country. Whether it is a statement of his life philosophy
on the album's title track, or a paean to getting in the car and hitting the highway,
Kevin is clearly having a great time and you should too! This record is beer,
friends, the shining sun, and mostly, fun. The Lloyd Maines production puts Kevin's
party-friendly songs in the sweet spot. If you aren't singing along by the album's
third track (Texas and Beer) you have no pulse. In a musical era of introspective
singer-songwriters, Deal is glad to cheer you up with this terrific ode to having
a good time. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (Stoneman Music) REVIEW

A CRACKER! BILL KELLY Bread On The Waters
Bill Kelly delivers his tales of messed-up love and redemption with whimsy. He
sets the tone for the record with the gorgeous opening track "Daddy Wouldn't
Know." Over the record Kelly, who at times is reminiscent of Jackson Browne,
Tim Easton, and Loudon Wainwright III, charms the listener with gentle melodies
and thoughtful imagery. Bread On The Waters, impeccably produced by Lincoln Schleifer,
shows Kelly as a sublimely compelling musician. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music

DEADSTRING
BROTHERS Silver Mountain Recorded
in the Deadstring Brothers' own recording studio, Silver Mountain boasts the tunesmanship
of The Faces and the barroom howl of The Band stewed together in homage to the
blues of the American South and dancehalls of the urban factory North. Music like
this formed the genesis of album-oriented FM rock - this record showcases high
energy bluesy rave-ups and hymnal country ballads. Silver Mountain is a coming
out party for sultry singer Masha Marjieh. Gritty and seductive, reminiscent of
sixties-era Tina Turner, Masha steps into the spotlight on 8 of the 11 tracks,
showcasing her hot-blooded and lustful voice, leaving no doubt that the biggest
heart in the room now belongs to this soulful vocalist. (Bloodshot) MORE

CHUCK E WEISS
Other Side Of Town Immortalized
in Rickie Lee Jones's 1979 hit, "Chuck E.'s In Love", Weiss' career
as a singer/songwriter has included playing the drums and singing in a craggy
blues voice that recalls the Chicago and New Orleans styles of music he holds
close to his heart. Weiss enjoys an underground career amongst lovers of blues,
rock, and zydeco. The first of a long list of his recordings was released on Select
in 1981. This disc, containing cuts from that release, paints an early and endearing
picture of a young Chuck E. that's immediately likeable, unpretentious, and organic.
Accompanied by Dr. John, Rickie Lee Jones, and others, it's an interesting snapshot
of an earlier time in the life of the irrepressible romantic scallywag that is
Mr. Weiss. (ADA) MORE

TORMES Limelight
New York-based chanteuse Liz Tormes, on her stunning debut, presents a downbeat
mix of Gothic Americana - beautiful, yet slightly dark. There are a few solid
roots pop tunes to swing the mood upward on this mostly mid-tempo collection of
acoustic based songs. Yet a prevailing melancholy in her voice threads Limelight
with magnetic warmth and honest appeal. The Village Voice says, "Nashville-transplant
Tormes plays a rich, reverb-soaked guitar-based garage rock, and comes across
like a melt of Aimee Mann and Margo Timmins, but this is not to suggest she is
an imitation. Powerful, haunting and rich, she is one to watch." We peg her
for a fair middle between Neko Case and Kathleen Edwards. Special guests include
Teddy Thompson and Ollabelle`s Amy Helm, both helping out with vocals. (Velour)

What's
Happening Around the MOM Offices | This
week you will read about the inexplicable power of melody, and ranking an artist's
best work.
LATE
LAST WEEK MILES, THE QUEEN AND YOUR JESTER'S 15 year old Golden Retriever mix
woke up lethargic. Sure, most 15 year old dogs are kind of slow to move, but this
was him lying on his side and not moving. He still had an appetite, but we had
to feed him by hand while he was lying on his side. He could walk if you got him
to his feet, but he wasn't really interested in even getting up.
Your
Jester put him in the back of the Pathfinder -- the reason we have an SUV is to
cart around the three dogs, but we recycle so it all evens out in my head -- and
drove off to the vet 12 miles away. There are probably two dozen vets closer to
us than our vet, but Miles has been going there since 1994. If we're reaching
the end I'd prefer he be in a familiar place with doctors he knows rather than
in some strange and completely uncomfortable vet.
After
checking in at the front desk, we slowly walked over to a seat in the waiting
room. Your Jester cajoled him into lying down on the tile floor. Sad, knowing
looks were passed to me by the other dog parents who were also waiting. Your Jester
is one who lets imagination run wild in these kinds of scenarios. No data was
in, but, obviously this could be Miles' time. He had a cancerous growth removed
from his lip earlier this year, he's 15, and now he's not interested in moving.
The brain is working overtime considering the possible while we wait.
Then
Your Jester's ear catches a snippet of melody. The waiting room has piped in instrumental
music... elevator music, Muzak... the abomination of the art form. The brain's
Rolodex flips around and quickly recognizes the song as The Beatles "Yesterday."
Yes, it is the cliche "elevator music" song. At that moment, though,
my thoughts changed from the doom and gloom of what potentially awaited Miles
and happily listened to the very familiar song, even if the rendition was unremarkable.
For a few minutes there was escape from the sadness of the moment.
Your
Jester has never cottoned to elevator music, but for those few minutes, it was
bliss.
The
doctor diagnosed Miles with an infection putting him on a 21 day cycle of antibiotics.
He's up and around, stomping his large feet with every step, often off in his
own mush-brained world but he's still happy and has a quality of life.
The
melody of Yesterday, along with many other songs from the decades, is ingrained.
The brain's recall is immediate. For years Your Jester's reaction to these elevator
music versions had been revulsion. A little life experience has changed that opinion.
YOUR
JESTER SPENT all day Wednesday listening to Bruce Springsteen CDs. Old releases.
So old, In fact, several of the CDs have been in the collection so long that have
have Your Jester's initials on the disc from back in the day of working retail,
bringing in music to listen to and making sure it made its way back to the proper
owner. Yesterday was Born to Run, Darkness, The River, Born In The USA, and Nebraska,
It started by wanting to hear Tunnel of Love but being unable to locate it because
Your Jester hadn't bothered putting it back in its proper place last time it was
played... whenever that was.
Maybe
it is just the tenor of times, Your Jester's increasingly distant teen years,
or maybe, a change of taste. Born To Run has always been top of the heap. The
River and Darkness, Nebraska, and then Born In The USA (which is impossible to
listen to without the title song making Your Jester cringe just a little bit).
Top of the heap, at least for the year 2007, is now Nebraska. Your Jester had
a problem with Springsteen's optimism. More to the point, Your Jester wasn't in
the mood for optimism. Nebraska's grim, gritty tales have aged well. Some production
values on the older band albums sound a little dated. Maybe Nebraska's lack of
production accounts for its momentary rise to the top of the heap.
This
ranking will certainly change the next time Your Jester goes on a Springsteen
jag, just as it changes every time a handful of Dylan, Costello, or Neil Young
albums are reappraised.
Until
next week, The
Queen, Your Jester, and The Mangler | |
