TIM CARROLL
The Devil Is A Busy Man
Five years since his last release, Tim Carroll is still one of the hottest roots rock guitar players around. Carroll's keeps his music unadorned, filling his songs with a wink and a grin, while delivering sing-along choruses in a joyful nasally twang. Carroll steeps his songs in country, rock, roadhouse blues, and more rock, making is all feel effortless, natural and alive. Carroll, as he has done for over a decade, delivers another solid set. The Devil might be busy but the music world might be better off if Tim wouldn't wait five years between releases. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (self-released)

KEVIN DEAL

Roll
Kevin Deal is foot-stomping Texas country. Whether it is a statement of his life philosophy on the album's title track, or a paean to getting in the car and hitting the highway, Kevin is clearly having a great time and you should too! This record is beer, friends, the shining sun, and mostly, fun. The Lloyd Maines production puts Kevin's party-friendly songs in the sweet spot. If you aren't singing along by the album's third track (Texas and Beer) you have no pulse. In a musical era of introspective singer-songwriters, Deal is glad to cheer you up with this terrific ode to having a good time. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (Stoneman Music)

BILL KELLY

Bread On The Waters
Bill Kelly delivers his tales of messed-up love and redemption with whimsy. He sets the tone for the record with the gorgeous opening track "Daddy Wouldn't Know." Over the record Kelly, who at times is reminiscent of Jackson Browne, Tim Easton, and Loudon Wainwright III, charms the listener with gentle melodies and thoughtful imagery. Bread On The Waters, impeccably produced by Lincoln Schleifer, shows Kelly as a sublimely compelling musician. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (MrAmericana Records)

DEADSTRING BROTHERS
Silver Mountain
Recorded in the Deadstring Brothers' own recording studio, Silver Mountain boasts the tunesmanship of The Faces and the barroom howl of The Band stewed together in homage to the blues of the American South and dancehalls of the urban factory North. Music like this formed the genesis of album-oriented FM rock - this record showcases high energy bluesy rave-ups and hymnal country ballads. Silver Mountain is a coming out party for sultry singer Masha Marjieh. Gritty and seductive, reminiscent of sixties-era Tina Turner, Masha steps into the spotlight on 8 of the 11 tracks, showcasing her hot-blooded and lustful voice, leaving no doubt that the biggest heart in the room now belongs to this soulful vocalist. WILL HOGE

Draw The Curtains
Draw The Curtains, Hoge's first album in two years, is a force of authenticity, covering sounds from country and roots to rock, soul, and R&B. "Washed by the Water" and "Silver or Gold" gush with the passion and spirituality of Otis Redding-fired rock and roll while "Midnight Parade" resonates with the color and verve of early Springsteen. Hoge filters rock, soul, folk, blues and country through a prism of emotional authenticity and what emerges is undeniable. (Rykodisc)

CICADAS

Cicadas
Some varieties of cicada emerge from dormancy only once a decade or so, and that's how long it took this band to actually form, for singer-songwriter Rodney Crowell had actually been playing with Cicadas drummer Vince Santoro for 11 years before this release "emerged" in 1997! Other cicadas include Michael Rhodes and Steuart Smith; together they made one of the most satisfying country-rock records of the '90s, yours exclusively from Noble Rot! (Noble Rot)

HOYT AXTON

Less Than The Song / Life Machine
The late, great Hoyt Axton remains a country, pop and folk music icon, and Raven presents for the first time on one indispensable CD two of his finest ever albums: Less Than The Song (1973) and Life Machine (1974). Best known as a hit songwriter ('Joy to the World', 'The Pusher', 'No No Song', 'Never Been to Spain' etc), Axton signed to A&M Records in 1972 for a string of high quality albums. Less Than The Song features a set of beguiling songs with just his acoustic guitar and gravely baritone to the fore over subtle instrumentation. ROCKFOUR

Memories Of The Never Happened
"It's 11 energy-packed tracks mixed with vaulting jams and melodic harmonies. Guitarist Ben Izhak's trademark 12 strings Rickenbacker sound dominates Rockfour's disc with mesmerizing solos and a catching hook in almost every track. Tel Aviv rockers Rockfour can't seem to make up their minds about whether they want to be an expansive, psychedelic band like their heroes, Pink Floyd, a harmony-laden, jangly Sixties pop group like the Zombies or the Byrds, or sleek modern rockers. So on the band's third album in English - Memories of the Never Happened - it tries to be all three." -- notlame.com (Cooking Vinyl)

SEA WOLF

Leaves In The River
The songs on this debut full-length are awash with longing for distant places visited, lived, and loved, and are molded by the geography of singer/songwriter Alex Brown Church's past - the long, winding descent from the Sierra foothills to the hazy shores of the Barbary Coast. Lofting, arching melodies over foggy, elegiac pop and folk structures. The impression left by these songs lasts long after they've packed up and moved on. Produced by Phil Ek (The Shins, Built To Spill, Band Of Horses). (Dangerbird)

CHUCK E WEISS

Other Side Of Town
Immortalized in Rickie Lee Jones's 1979 hit, "Chuck E.'s In Love", Weiss' career as a singer/songwriter has included playing the drums and singing in a craggy blues voice that recalls the Chicago and New Orleans styles of music he holds close to his heart. Weiss enjoys an underground career amongst lovers of blues, rock, and zydeco. The first of a long list of his recordings was released on Select in 1981. This disc, containing cuts from that release, paints an early and endearing picture of a young Chuck E. that's immediately likeable, unpretentious, and organic. Accompanied by Dr. John, Rickie Lee Jones, and others, it's an interesting snapshot of an earlier time in the life of the irrepressible romantic scallywag that is Mr. Weiss. (ADA)

TOM GILLAM
Never Look Back
Tom Gillams Never Look Back is the follow-up to the 2005 AMA Nominated Shake My Hand. A lot has happened in between, including Toms flirting with death. In March 2006, Tom suffered 3 heart attacks. Within 6 weeks, Tom was back out on the road, leading his band, Tractor Pull. The new record features well crafted pop songs with a country rock flavor. Blending the edgier side of Americana/Alt. Country with 70s style guitar rock. Songs like "Another Break-Up Song," "Where is Bobby Gentry,"and "Never Look Back" lead the way. (Treehouse)

LIZ TORMES

Limelight
New York-based chanteuse Liz Tormes, on her stunning debut, presents a downbeat mix of Gothic Americana - beautiful, yet slightly dark. There are a few solid roots pop tunes to swing the mood upward on this mostly mid-tempo collection of acoustic based songs. Yet a prevailing melancholy in her voice threads Limelight with magnetic warmth and honest appeal. The Village Voice says, "Nashville-transplant Tormes plays a rich, reverb-soaked guitar-based garage rock, and comes across like a melt of Aimee Mann and Margo Timmins, but this is not to suggest she is an imitation. Powerful, haunting and rich, she is one to watch." We peg her for a fair middle between Neko Case and Kathleen Edwards. Special guests include Teddy Thompson and Ollabelle`s Amy Helm, both helping out with vocals. (Velour)

Gauthiers continuing evolution as a songwriter is evident throughout the 10 songs that comprise Between Daylight And Dark. The album cut live, with minimal overdubs, and produced by Joe Henry. The album features guest appearances by Van Dyke Parks (piano on `Cant Find The Way`) and Loudon Wainwright (backing vocals on `Soft Place To Land` and `I Aint Leaving`). Prodeuced by Joe Henry. JENS LEKMAN
Night Falls Over Kortedala LP
Like a modern day Chet Baker, Jens loves to sing about heartache. This is his first album in over three years, and Kortedala refers to a neighborhood in his hometown of Gothenburg, Sweden - "a depressing suburban hell". It also refers to a vague musical pop sound with hints of tropicalia that has been coming out of Gothenburg's clubs the last few years. "Night Falls Over Kortedala" features many previously unreleased live favorites and guest vocals from label-mate Frida Hyvonen and El Perro del Mar.(Secretly Canadian)

Parallel Suns LP
With "Parallel Suns", Lubelski has flown to a higher orbit with her merger of the fuels of folk, psychedelia, and pop. They combine into a potent mixture that gives her compositions a vibrancy that shimmers in the reflection of their power. The music streams down and ends up in your ear through dappled arrangements that are warm and bright while still having them shaded with darkness from both the lyrics and sound. LAURA VEIRS
Saltbreakers
Listening to Laura Veirs is like looking up into the night sky and suddenly witnessing a meteor shower: there`s something startling and magical, both intimate and awesome, about her songs. The nature-obsessed images Veirs conjures up and the mesmerizing sound she creates are as indelible as the blaze of shooting stars. "Saltbreakers", her third album release in three years, is her most beautifully realized band-oriented disc yet. Produced by Tucker Martine (the Decemberists, Built To Spill), it is by turns haunting, playful, tender and fierce, embracing everything from machine-driven beats (the single `Don`t Lose Yourself`) to angelic gospel choirs (`To The Country`) to fuzzed-out guitars and driving alt-rock rhythms (`Phantom Mountain`). What's Happening Around the MOM Offices

This week you will read about the inexplicable power of melody, and ranking an artist's best work.

LATE LAST WEEK MILES, THE QUEEN AND YOUR JESTER'S 15 year old Golden Retriever mix woke up lethargic. Sure, most 15 year old dogs are kind of slow to move, but this was him lying on his side and not moving. He still had an appetite, but we had to feed him by hand while he was lying on his side. He could walk if you got him to his feet, but he wasn't really interested in even getting up.

Your Jester put him in the back of the Pathfinder -- the reason we have an SUV is to cart around the three dogs, but we recycle so it all evens out in my head -- and drove off to the vet 12 miles away. There are probably two dozen vets closer to us than our vet, but Miles has been going there since 1994. If we're reaching the end I'd prefer he be in a familiar place with doctors he knows rather than in some strange and completely uncomfortable vet.

After checking in at the front desk, we slowly walked over to a seat in the waiting room. Your Jester cajoled him into lying down on the tile floor. Sad, knowing looks were passed to me by the other dog parents who were also waiting. Your Jester is one who lets imagination run wild in these kinds of scenarios. No data was in, but, obviously this could be Miles' time. He had a cancerous growth removed from his lip earlier this year, he's 15, and now he's not interested in moving. The brain is working overtime considering the possible while we wait.

Then Your Jester's ear catches a snippet of melody. The waiting room has piped in instrumental music... elevator music, Muzak... the abomination of the art form. The brain's Rolodex flips around and quickly recognizes the song as The Beatles "Yesterday." Yes, it is the cliche "elevator music" song. At that moment, though, my thoughts changed from the doom and gloom of what potentially awaited Miles and happily listened to the very familiar song, even if the rendition was unremarkable. For a few minutes there was escape from the sadness of the moment.

Your Jester has never cottoned to elevator music, but for those few minutes, it was bliss.

The doctor diagnosed Miles with an infection putting him on a 21 day cycle of antibiotics. He's up and around, stomping his large feet with every step, often off in his own mush-brained world but he's still happy and has a quality of life.

The melody of Yesterday, along with many other songs from the decades, is ingrained. The brain's recall is immediate. For years Your Jester's reaction to these elevator music versions had been revulsion. A little life experience has changed that opinion.

YOUR JESTER SPENT all day Wednesday listening to Bruce Springsteen CDs. Old releases. So old, In fact, several of the CDs have been in the collection so long that have have Your Jester's initials on the disc from back in the day of working retail, bringing in music to listen to and making sure it made its way back to the proper owner. Yesterday was Born to Run, Darkness, The River, Born In The USA, and Nebraska, It started by wanting to hear Tunnel of Love but being unable to locate it because Your Jester hadn't bothered putting it back in its proper place last time it was played... whenever that was.

Maybe it is just the tenor of times, Your Jester's increasingly distant teen years, or maybe, a change of taste. Born To Run has always been top of the heap. The River and Darkness, Nebraska, and then Born In The USA (which is impossible to listen to without the title song making Your Jester cringe just a little bit). Top of the heap, at least for the year 2007, is now Nebraska. Your Jester had a problem with Springsteen's optimism. More to the point, Your Jester wasn't in the mood for optimism. Nebraska's grim, gritty tales have aged well. Some production values on the older band albums sound a little dated. Maybe Nebraska's lack of production accounts for its momentary rise to the top of the heap.

This ranking will certainly change the next time Your Jester goes on a Springsteen jag, just as it changes every time a handful of Dylan, Costello, or Neil Young albums are reappraised.

Until next week,

The Queen, Your Jester, and The Mangler
