IT'S
A CRACKER! JASON
EADY & THE WAYWARD APOSTLES Wild Eyed Serenade Jason
Eady's smooth twang, expertly supported by his band The Wayward Apostles, effortlessly
flows across "tears in your beer" songs, hard country, and introspective
folk. Name any style that falls under the big umbrella of Americana and Eady expertly
handles the vocals. While many out there can take on the technical task of singing,
Eady is an artist at work. Call him a young Steve Earle, or compare him to Ray
Wylie Hubbard. Pick your favorite Texas singer-songwriter. Someday, possibly,
Eady's name could be among them. Wild Eyed Sernade's 12 tracks are all gems. --

EADY From Underneath The Old From
Underneath the Old announces a gifted, young songwriter. From Ft. Worth by way
of Mississippi, Eady layers his smooth vocals over elements of acoustic country,
folk, and gospel. Later records reveal a robust Eady when he is backed by a band.
His debut album is elegant and subdued. Producers Walt Wilkins and Tim Lorsch
keep Eady reigned in, focusing on his outstanding voice and the essence of the
song. A terrific debut by a talented young man. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music

WATSON & HIS LONE STARS Live@Newland.NL/Remixed For
an artist like Dale Watson, his home is where he hangs his hat (or where he puts
his boots). When you're travelling the world for the best part of the year, it
is good to have some certainties in life, places where your hat and boots know
they're always welcome; Ginny's Little Longhorn or The Broken Spoke in his beloved
Austin, TX, will easily be recognized as such by most of his fans. But be it in
close competition with the Cafe Sports in Delft, Club Newland in Klaaswaal (NL)
is no doubt one of those places that feel like home away from home, when Dale
and his Lone Stars are on yet another European tour. Here is a highly entertaining
90-minute set of mostly Dale Watson .You can leave your hat on while enjoying

THE
CAKE SALE The Cake Sale The
Cake Sale is a band featuring a loose and expansive collective of musicians and
writers who have combined to create a 9-song CD of the same name. All profits
from the album go to support Oxfam's Make Trade Fair campaign and their overseas
program work. Recorded in Dublin last year, the bones of The Cake Sale's tracks
were laid down by Bell X1 duo Crosby and Paul Noonan along with Crowded House
bassist Nick Seymour and drummer Graham Hopkins. All songs were previously unreleased
and recorded specifically for The Cake Sale project with all publishing royalties
being donated by their writers. Lead vocals were provided from Snow Patrol's Gary
Lightbody, Glen Hansard (The Frames / Once the film), Nina Persson (The Cardigans),
Gemma Hayes, and Josh Ritter among others. The song "All The Way Down"
written by Glen Hansard and subsequently appearing on the soundtrack of indie
movie hit Once, now features vocals by Gemma Hayes. (Yep Roc) MORE

FORREST DAVIS Roughs The
nationwide release of 'Roughs' by former and founding member of the Los Angeles
rock band Sugarcult, now available on Velvet Crush and Matthew Sweet drummer Ric
Menck's Bird Song imprint. Ben's doing his very own laidback soft-rock thing,
with a dab of country & western, quite a departure from Sugarcult's highly-touted
tautness. Leaving behind a life of rock-nroll excess, this enigmatic album qualifies
both as emancipation and exorcism, a collection of intimate, personal songs about
love, longing,loathing and self-destruction. Likened to singer-songwriterly, orch-popping
artists like Ken Stringfellow and The Posies, Kevin Tihistaâ€s

to the classic burlesque films Marsico grew up watching in the backroom of his

successfully incorporates Marsicoa's love of fantasy, roots oriented rock n roll,
and the female form into a delightfully sinful low budget romp that titillates
as much as it entertains. Marsico has underscored his film with many of his famous

GREYSON 20 Century Accident Macon
Greyson's stereo-pulsing rock displayed on their fourth studio album, 20th Century
Accidents, showcases their activist lyrics while remaining devoted to their background
as a guitar rock band. Paralleling protest songs from the 1970s closely in both
sound and lyrical content, the critically-acclaimed group from Dallas is drumming
their brazen ballads all over the international spectrum. Influenced tremendously
by the satirical writings of Kurt Vonnegut, Macon Greyson now use their songs
as a like-minded platform for themes of unrest and demonstration. The anthems
on Accidents prevail as the perfect sound track to any opposition against the
powers that be, while still showcasing the group's talent for crafting catchy
melodies. (Fat Caddy Records) MORE

country-blues and gospel with dark lyrical themes. The Acoustica tracks capture
this vibe in a rowdy live setting while the bonus tracks feature guest appearances

SARA COX Crowded Is The New Lonely
On
Cox's third solo release she explores the compromises of domestic life. A mother
of three, Cox touches on both the demands of family and the isolation one can
feel despite standing amongst the throngs. Her voice, reminiscent of Shelby Lynne's
smokiness sans the hurt, along with her eye for life's subtleties are the centerpiece
of this beautifully melancholic album. Over ten tracks Cox captures a snapshot
of her life at this moment, offering a diary as much as a selection of songs.

What's
Happening Around the MOM Offices |
This
week you will read about the big cliff-hanger, it is all about those college years,
and canine music. .
WE
HAVE A BIG ANNOUNCEMENT NEXT week. Your Jester has already been loose-lipped,
leading to a good "shush" by The Queen. Let's just say that the we've
found a way to improve... -- dramatically, we think -- on the shipping aspect
of our business. "Do yell, you say?" Your Jester is already saying too
much but the news is so exciting it is nearly bursting out. It is almost as exciting
as getting that first kiss in high school... What, you folks got first kisses
before high school? Your Jester has always been a late bloomer.
AS LONG AS were
talking high school, The Queen and Your Jester visited her cousins last weekend
that You Jester had only met for the first time a few months back at the other
cousin's Bar Mitzvah. The Queen's cousins are exceptionally nice and generous
people. They live out in the first burb for Ventura county once you have gone
west and left Los Angeles county. Looking at the neighborhood you would never
know you left LA because my beloved city endlessly sprawls. Cousins
Joel and Jackie put the ipod on shuffle and let it go. Let me preface this by
saying Joel and Jackie are not "music people." For them it was FM radio
hits and classic rock and the ipod shuffle reflected that. Occasionally something
unusual like Ike & Tina Turner's "River Deep Mountain High" would
pop up on the playlist. Your Jester had to get up and look at what was playing
every single time it was a "good song" just to confirm the old ears
weren't playing tricks. Every time. Joel and Jackie would ask, "What are
you looking at?" Your Jester would reply, "I just wanted to see who
it was." They aren't fully aware of how deeply music has permeated the lives
of The Queen and Your Jester. Joel
was telling us about The Canyon club that is a mile or two away. It is a stop
on the oldies circuit. Back in the old, old days when the oldies circuit was populated
by Gary Lewis and The Playboys, Gary Puckett and The Union Gap, and, even Paul
Revere and maybe an original Raider Your Jester found the whole idea kind of sad.
Bands playing their one big hit surrounded by a few other tracks that the audience
might know. Then they were on to the next stop. Your Jester thought, "The
bands I like will never be on the oldies circuit because A) it was beneath them
or B) they would never have hits, The arrogance of youth and thinking musical
taste is both exceptional and doomed to never having the mainstream popularity.
Joel
says, "I say a great show there by the English Beat. Do you know who they
are?" Suddenly, I was dizzy, like a body blow had been delivered." Suburban
Joel was a fan of the English Beat? The band that headlined one of the greatest
single rock n roll experiences of my life (REM opened the show and the Beat's
set was so great the audience refused to leave without another encore even after
the house lights came up). Now
Your Jester is dealing with the beloved band playing the oldies circuit. Your
Jester was thrilled Joel knew who they were. I tried to bond by telling him about
the show with REM but I could see him glazing over. Music just doesn't do that
thing for him that it does for me. Your
Jester make mental lists of the best shows ever and favorite albums of all time.
Joel digs "that Mirror in the Bathroom song." He had a great time, though,
at The Canyon -- the club that is the object of my continuing derision -- and
invited The Queen and Your Jester to meet him there to see his favorites. Obviously,
the initial reaction was, "Negatory, good buddy." As
the week has passed and Your Jester processed the the conversation, the visceral
reaction, the musical arrogance... going to The Canyon might be fun. Your Jester
will try not to notice that the band has somehow gotten old, even while I still
feel like I'm in my mid-twenties. LAST
WEEK YOUR JESTER MUSED ON the momentary beauty of elevator music as it related
to taking my mind away from the very real issue of our very old dog. For those
of you relatively new to this missive, dog talk was a regular part of "What's
Happening" for many years. Ella, our now-passed Shepard Mix, and Miles our
golden mix were with us at the office every day. Callers would frequently hear
them barking at the postal carrier, UPS guy or a sales guy walking in off the
street. Their hair was everywhere. We used to joke that we shipped dog hair worldwide
as, inevitably, a little fur would be stuck to the packing tape. As they got older
we started leaving them at home. Plus The Queen worked at home a lot so they always
had people. After
9/11, we adopted Merle, a lab/rottweiler runt mutt. We have a habit of adopted
pets at momentous moments in our lives probably because it provides a sense of
stability. Plus Miles needed a friend to play with. It worked out great. Merle
ran that poor old dog ragged but they had the best time. Ella
passed in 2005. It took The Queen and I a little over a year before we had healed
enough to start talking about getting another dog. January 2007, The Queen was
having a bad day. Your Jester, for reasons no sane person can explain, went trolling
on the lab rescue sites, found a handsome devil and sent the link over via IM.
The Queen replied, "I want him!" She always replies with that.
Thinking it was
just another moment of want Your Jester ignored the request. She persisted arranging
a meet with the dog down at the rescue We must be a dog rescuers dream. Dogs have
run of the house, have an enclosed yard, sleep in our bed if they want... we met
this large lab mix, then named Wilson. The Queen wasn't sure. As soon as Your
Jester fed him a treat with him looking up so hopefully, slightly wagging his
tail the deal was sealed. Nine
months later he still manipulates us by looking sincere and wagging a bit. We're
suckers but Satchel Moses (aka Big Mo, the Moocher, Big Moocher) is permanently
in our home and hearts. Thanks
to those that sent me personal messages about Miles. He was scrawny, abused, and
tick covered when we got him. Now he is filled out, old, cantankerous and part
of our family.
Until
next week, The
Queen, Your Jester, and The Mangler | |
