IT'S
A CRACKER! DEROMANTIC
Deromantic Deromantic
is both epic and grand and sparse and minimal. They deftly manage both ends of
the spectrum. Steve Puchalski's voice has Doug Sahm's sadness, the epic nature
of early Springsteen, and the soul of a veteran bluesman. This album, full of
grand heartbreak and passion, attempts to look honestly and not apologetically
at life's hard knocks. The band, more accurately the Familiar Music artistic collective,
swings, grooves, smolders, and smokes. This is terrific soul-filled roots-pop.

ROBERT
PLANT & ALISON KRAUSS Raising Sand The
musical collaboration of the decade, Raising Sand is the sound of two iconic figures
stepping out of their respective comfort zones and letting their instincts lead
them across a brave new sonic landscape. Despite hailing from distinctly different
backgrounds, Alison Krauss and Robert Plant share a maverick spirit and willingness
to extend the boundaries of their respective genres. This spirit, expertly honed
by producer T Bone Burnett, has resulted in an album pitched three steps beyond
some cosmic collision of early urban blues, spacious West Texas country, and the
untapped potential of the folk-rock revolution. Supported by the unparalleled
musicianship of Marc Ribot, Dennis Crouch, Mike Seeger, Jay Bellerose, Norman
Blake, Greg Leisz, Patrick Warren, and Riley Baugus, Plant and Krauss - as both
solo and harmony vocalists - tackle an intriguing selection of songs from such
tunesmiths as Tom Waits, Gene Clark, Sam Phillips, Townes Van Zandt, The Everly
Brothers, and Mel Tillis. Raising Sand finds Robert Plant and Alison Krauss exploring
popular music's elemental roots while still sounding effortlessly, breath-takingly

ADAMS & CARDINALS Follow The Lights EP "The
new songs aren't really the draw on Follow the Lights, the seven-song Ryan Adams
EP.... (Anyway there are only two of them: the title track and "My Love for
You Is Real," both of which will soon be featured on the ABC series "October
Road.") The draw for most fans will be a handful of Mr. Adams's near-classics
performed live in the studio with his stalwart band, the Cardinals. The mood is
reflective and sober, especially on a slowed-down acoustic version of "If
I Am a Stranger... Finally there's a lone cover, the Alice in Chains song "Down
in a Hole," which Mr. Adams has taken to playing in concert. The lyrics sound
as stark and self-pitying as ever, but they fit: Mr. Adams knows this terrain
all too well, and he seems happy to show it." -NY Times (Lost Highways) MORE

BERWICK Ain't No Train Outta Nashville Nashville
and Chicago based renegade Pete Berwick's music suggests hard livin', honkytonks,
endless highways and lost love. Berwick's Jack Daniels soaked vocals are raw and
rough-edged, as he sings songs from a discerning and familiar point of view. Berwick
weaves his early cowpunk influences with contemporary and traditional styles to
create a musical mosaic, which is diverse, yet comprehensive and extremely individual,
and deeply rooted in American music.--Tony Engelhart, Crud Magazine (Shotgun Records) MORE

BROSSEAU Cavalier 'Cavalier'
was produced by PJ Harvey collaborator and Producer John Parish at Toy Box studio
in Bristol, UK over the space of a week in May 2007. A huge fan of Tom's music
after witnessing him play live, John augments Tom's songs with an array of subtle,
sympathetic instrumentation and / or recording technique but never allows himself
to encroach on Tom's songs. Providing deft flourishes, underlining or embellishing
what is already there, he pulls off the neat trick of expanding or magnifying
the songs while keeping the spotlight firmly on Tom's voice and guitar. 'Cavalier'
is Tom's most personal record to date, and the recordings are referred to by Tom
as an apocalypse of the self - yet they retain all the humility, tenderness and
beauty of Tom's best work. (Fat Cat) MORE

the music for the soundtrack and serves as the album's co-executive producer along

a peerless group of artists to record Harris' songs: Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris,

Walker's 11-track collection spills over with down-home grit and feeling. Tunes
like "Change My Way" and "Gone Before I Knew It" are steeped
in Texas-soaked guitar boogie. Simultaneously, he can turn around and deliver
tasty country soul on songs like "Steady," "2 Feet Left From The
Ceiling" and "Sun Down." The North Carolina born-and-raised musician,
who grew up on a hippie commune, also showcases a penchant for interpreting the
work of other great songwriters. His solo piano-vocal rendition of Tom Waits'
"Picture In A Frame" is quite simply gorgeous. On the James Hunter-penned
number "Kick It Around," he turns out the kind of stinging blues licks
and tough vocals that have earned him praise from artists like Delbert McClinton,
Johnny Winter, Dale Watson and Marcia Ball. (Hyena) MORE

capture the malaise of the peculiar, disorienting times in which we live.` (Anti)

What's
Happening Around the MOM Offices | This
week you will read about finding new veins and old friends, the tip jar, and the
poorly kept secret.
FOR
YEARS YOUR JESTER has wanted to do a "Where Are They Now" segment.
Every so often a subject would percolate up and then dissipate as soon a shiny
object captured Your Jester's attention.
This
week, though, Your Jester has one. Yesterday I was listening to Progressive Talk
AM 1150 here in Los Angeles. The programming is a bunch of liberals venting about
conservatives. For me, it is like listening to new age music. It is somehow soothing.
The
fill-in host yesterday was Johnny Wendell. He started his show musing about how
if all we had to do in life was talk about sports and Mott The Hoople our existence
might be a little easier.
Wendell
has spoken of his years in bands. He writes for the LA Weekly under the name Johnny
Angel.
Later
in the show he mentioned his e-mail address and myspace page. His e-mail address
refers to his belief that the Boston Celtics will rise again to previous prominence.
What an optimist.
I
found his bio on the radio station's web page, grabbed a bit of text and IMd it
to the Sox homer asking if he knew of Angel back in the halcyon days of the Boston
Rock scene. Affirmative.
Angel
was in The Blackjacks, a seminal, raucous college rock band back when alternative
bands were yet to be lumped into the "College Rock" genre.
He
banged around Boston for awhile, getting no commercial traction with The Blackjacks
before coming out to LA. In the succeeding years he established himself as a freelance
journalist, sometime actor, and host of left-leaning radio.
I
know his work as radio host Johnny Wendell and maybe a little as journalist Johnny
Angel. But, to the Sox homer, he was in the band that recorded "That's Why
I Always Dress In Black."
SOMEHOW
THIS WEEK A PENALTY JAR was instituted at MOMCentral. The fines are a modest one
cent per infraction. The rules, however, aren't exactly clear of what constitutes
an infraction so seemingly every few minutes someone is tossing a penny into the
jar.
This
much is known: The Mangler is penalized for frequent use of a hybrid pejorative
the questions a person's mental accument. The word comes from a work by absurdist
novelist Chritopher Moore.
Your
Jester is penalized as part of the ongoing cursing of the 2007 baseball season.
Within the last few weeks of the regular season The Mangler unilaterally banned
Your Jester from even conversing about baseball. Now, any mention of the post-season
(god forbid Your Jester refers to it as the "playoffs") results in a
fine.
The
Queen has largely been exempt from the fining, mostly because she is The Queen
and, therefore, above the fray.
The
treasury which, you can imagine, will grow to excess of one's of dollars in no
time, will be blown on a lottery ticket as prescribed in the fine jar's still-arbitrary
by-laws.
THERE
ARE SOME SECRETS that manage to stay secret forever. Who built Stonehenge and
is it really only 18" tall? What is the half-life of a Twinkie? Were there
other gunmen on the grassy knoll? Was Teen Wolf really Bigfoot: The Early Years?
All are great subjects for episodes of "In Search Of."
Our
secret is not nearly as compelling, nor shrouded in a mystery further enhanced
by gauzy faux-archival video footage. Our secret involves no espionage, a little
international intrigue (You Jester speaks enough Spanish to order tacos from a
roach coach), a sexy woman (The Queen) and interstate commerce.
For
those that have gamely suffered through this year's big experiment of us partnering
with a company in Illinois to do all of our shipping and receiving you will rejoice,
maybe even do a jig in front of your computer if you are so moved, to hear we
are bringing the shipping home.
All
of the promise of efficiencies was thwarted by our feeling like a square peg trying
to fit into Illinois's round hole.
Those
of you that put up with the interesting times this year will, hopefully, be relieved
by this news. Those of you that didn't realize anything was different get to view
this news as nothing short of a positive development.
Now,
some of you might resurrect an e-mail missive from January where we embarked on
this strange and ill-fated journey, point to it and laugh in a derisive, mocking
way.
Like
leaders of government and the whims of a woman, we reserve the right to change
our mind and pursue a new course.
The
new course is going to look a lot like the old course before the great experiment
of 2007. Or, Your Jester can mass hypnotize all of you into believing that last
10 months never happened and to get you to cluck like a chicken on command.
Turn-around
time for orders, especially overseas orders, will be greatly reduced. The error
rate will drop dramatically. The confusing paperwork will be less confusing.
Until
next week, The
Queen, Your Jester, and The Mangler | |
