A CRACKER! KASEY
ANDERSON The Reckoning The
Reckoning is a themed record, a concept without one central character running
through it except the the idea that each song's protagonist has choices and consequences
of the decision. Anderson's 2004 release Dead Roses showcased a talented songwriter.
The Reckoning shows he is distilling down his ideas, refining his craft and making
exceptional, emotionally taught music. The record's impact is immediate but repeated
listening unveils new layers. Anderson's voice has the weary countenance of a
man far senior than his 27 years. An exceptional release. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles

A CRACKER! RIZDALES
Radio Country Roots
music gadfly John Conquest opined in 3rd Coast Music, "This isn't just hardcore
country music, but exceptionally well done hardcore country music." Husband
and wife Tom and Tara Dunphy's harmony style recalls legendary singing duos like
George and Tammy. They have distinct harmonies and a special chemistry that makes
the sad songs feel a little more painful because you believe they lived it. While
heavily influenced by '50s country, they deftly keep the sound contemporary. The
Rizdales have paid their dues. Now, lets hope they reap the benefits from this
wonderful collection of real country. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (self-released) REVIEW

legendary and NYC punk act Television, who have inspired several generations of
post-punk acts and artists. The 11 new songs set forth on The Radiant Monkey represent
Richard Lloyd's first studio recordings in seven years, and is his most audacious
and transfixing work to date, all the while totally rocking. Not surprising from
an artist and rock-n-roll character/mystic/guru of his stature. (Parasol) MORE

VASHTI BUNYAN
Some Things Just Stick in Your Mind: Singles and Demos 1964-1967 Following
the amazing success story of Vashti Bunyan's recent reemergence as an artist after
an exile of over 30 years comes the release of Some Things Just Stick In Your
Mind, a comprehensive collection of early recordings from the period prior to
her classic 1970 Just Another Diamond Day album. Titled after the (Jagger/Richards-penned)
debut single which opens the double-album, Some Things attempts to both draw a
line under the past and also to set the record straight regarding the disparity
between how Bunyan viewed (and still views) herself and the way the public views
her as an artist. While she is widely regarded as folk singer these recordings
instead reveal Bunyan as a pop singer. This complete collection of Bunyan's 25
existing early recordings is a young London girl's series of beautiful love songs
that resonate profoundly via an almost brutal efficiency and honesty. The melodies
seem timelessly sweet and addictive, the vision at once delicate but somehow tough
as granite. Track Listing Disc 1: Some Things Just Stick In Your Mind - Decca

ROCK WEST Honey and Salt A
mash of jangly power pop, twangy rock, and blending vocal harmonies along with
passionate hook-filled songwriting makes Dead Rock West`s Honey & Salt a hard-charging
debut. Energetic, like their musical heroes X, the band defies easy categorization
as they pull from country rock as much as punk without bending to either. Southern
California-scene vets Frank Lee Drennen and Cindy Wasserman spark when they harmonize,
the music jumps out making this a fantastic debut. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music

PINES Road Avenue Railroad "That`s
the fast track." That lyric from the album`s second track "Fast Track"
rolls over and over, propelled by guitar over-drive, harmony-rich vocals and a
muscular rhythm section. It speaks to the power of the album. The Slider Pines
have taken style cues from early 80s Power Pop and College Rock without sounding
like a cliche. Every song is a hook-filled three-minute gem. Fans of the Replacements,
Plimsouls, The Records and every other band from that era that knew how to rock
and also got you humming along will love Road Avenue Railroad. -- Jeff Weiss,

What's
Happening Around the MOM Offices |
This
week you will read about one of the greatest bands and their alleged sexuality,
the plink of the penny jar, and punks and poseurs.
THERE
WAS A REPORT RELEASED earlier this week raising warning flag to radio stations
that kids aren't listening to radio. The reason cited is the kids can't hear new
music so they turn to sharing mix cds, ipods, and downloads of all shapes sizes
and legalities.
Those
of us that grew up as Free Form FM devolved into AOR rock who then morphed (not
much morphing needed, really) into Classic Rock stations offer a head slapping
"duh" to the radio stations who needed a commissioned report to point
out the obvious.
Every
Thursday afternoon Your Jester sneaks out of the hotbox of MOMCentral for an hour
to pick up the niece from school and take her to hip-hop dance class.
After
she hopped in the back seat, loaded down with her gigantic backpack, clarinet
case and dance gear, Your Jester asked her what radio station she listened to.
Maybe Radio Disney, or... who knows....What does a 12 year old listen to? Your
Jester doubted she wanted to listen to the local blowhard sports guys pontificate
on how terrible the Lakers will be this year.
"I
don't really listen to radio." In retrospect, is anyone surprised by that
answer? I asked, "Do you listen to music?" This kid may be ultra-brainy,
play the clarinet and is interested in religious anthropology, but she is still
a hyper-talking 12 year old girl.
Displaying
a lung capacity that would make a free diver envious she dove into a 15 minute
explanation/rant on the Beatles. Your Jester should have recorded it if only to
go back and catch more of the content that was missed in her verbal fusillade.
The
highlights: The Beatles are the greatest band ever... her science teacher, who
bears a striking resemblance to Your Jester's older brother, refuses to play Octopuses
Garden in class but he will play other Beatles' songs.... the "stupid"
kids in school say, "The Beatles are gay," which means "not cool"
and has nothing to do with sexual issues... most of her friends don't really care
about music... The niece also really likes the Beach Boys... who was the one with
the high voice? Pet Sounds has been on repeat for three weeks....
While
receiving and processing that information was exhausting, it was nice to hear
that the next generation has a few in it that get music, even if it is 40 year
old recordings.
NOW
THE WE'VE GOT THIS PENNY "FINE" JAR an an ever-evolving set of rules
as to what constitutes a violation, Your Jester has taken to pre-paying before
taboo subjects are discussed. Do I want to discuss the World Series? Drop in a
penny and then IM The Mangler with comments about the Sox and Rockies. Do I want
to write out the Sox and Rockies in this missive? Drop in a penny before The Mangler
shakes the penny jar at me in demand for payment. (That's two pennies in the jar
just for these pair of transgressions).
As
you can imagine, the jar is very slow to fill. The Mangler is already imagining
spending the money on a lottery ticket. Please let us know if anyone has capricious
and arbitrary rules The Queen and Your Jester can institute just to annoy The
Mangler.
The
best part of it is it creates fun and stupid arguing on what can be long days.
THE
QUEEN AND YOUR JESTER went to a "punk rock bar mitzvah" last weekend.
A good friend's son chose a reception with a punk rock theme and asked attendees
to dress appropriately. The Queen wore her motorcycle boots ('80s vintage, well
worn) jeans and a nicer Japanese-style top. Your Jester, who has never known the
right thing to wear, chose a Banana Republic dress shirt and cords. Hey, the cords
were Your Jester being edgy!
My
friend Scott and his kid created the playlist from his iPod. It was primarily
late '70s and early '80s punk. Ramones, X, Social Distortion... and then every
so often a Led Zeppelin or Guns and Roses song would play.
The
bar mitzvah boy is also a huge music fan. He loves Rancid, Dropkick Murphys and
vintage punk. As he was making his decisions about the playlist he didn't have
the prejudices Your Jester brought with great snobbery to listening to music.
Clash
came along, the hipsters said dump your Led Zep records because they were dinosaurs.
Gone was the FM rock from my youth. Guns and Roses were far too hair metal, not
"cool appropriate" for a cultivated college rock music collection.
The
kid, though, doesn't know that those boundaries exist. He included the music that
rocks, that is cool to him, that gets him and his friends going.
He
was right. The classic Zep and GNR sounded great in the mix with everything else.
It was high energy and a lot of fun.
Back
to the clothing for a moment... it was a little surreal to drive up to the reception
and see a gaggle of 13 year old kids dressed up in punk and rocker gear... again,
the two seamlessly melded without pretense of one being cool and one not.
Until
next week, The
Queen, Your Jester, and The Mangler | |
