IT'S
A CRACKER! OR
THE WHALE Light Poles And Pines "Recorded
in two days, mostly using entire takes with few overdubs, the disc feels like
an informal front-porch session between seasoned musicians who have shared endless
miles on the road. How else to explain the confident looseness of stomping barn
burner "Bound to Go Home," the hoedown ebullience of "Threads,"
the intuitive heartstring-tugging musicianship of "Rope Don't Break"
... Add to this the fact that the group has four lead vocalists - and the remaining
members all sing backup - and it isn't much of a leap to imagine Or, the Whale
as a modern-day incarnation of another gang of rural mythmakers, the Band...over
the course of 13 songs, Light Poles and Pines swings effortlessly between knee-clapping
bluegrass, campfire country-gospel sing-alongs, straight-up classic Nashville
tearjerkers, and probably a few other forms I'm forgetting. Yet taken together,
they are a clear and cohesive expression of the back-to-our-roots ethos at work

DION Son Of Skip
James Son
of Skip James is the followup to Dion's landmark 2006 release Bronx In Blue, on
which the artist, accompanied only by his own acoustic guitar, bared his musical
soul on a set of personally charged readings of his favorite blues standards.
Bronx In Blue become one of the year's most acclaimed releases, leading New York
Times critic Jon Pareles to note, "He sings like someone whose demons are
in the past but still not forgotten." The self-produced Son of Skip James
extends its predecessor's organic approach, with eloquently spare arrangements
built around Dion's effortlessly soulful voice and sublime guitar and harmonica
work. (Verve) MORE

CHET ATKINS
Night Atlanta Burned / First Nashville Guitar Raven
presents for the first time on CD two iconic albums from the acoustic guitar master
Chet Atkins - The Night Atlanta Burned (1975) and The First Nashville Guitar Quartet
(1979). Combined on the one CD, these albums display the breadth and range of
his fluid technique. A true Country music legend, Atkins made an indelible impression
as a session guitarist and record producer. He helped create the Nashville sound,
a style of country music that combined pop with honky tonk. Having recorded for
RCA as a solo artist since 1953, by the mid-1970s Atkins was intent on expanding
his range. Inspired by John D. Loudermilk's 'The Night Atlanta Burned', the album
of the same name was a masterful fusion of classical/country/bluegrass tunes and
influences featuring The Atkins String Company, a top-notch chamber country ensemble
led by Atkins. He continued the theme in 1979 with The First Nashville Guitar
Quartet, a classy effort featuring four cowboy boot-wearing, tuxedo-clad acoustic
guitarists playing in the style of a string quartet. Songs range from covers of
the foot-tappin' 'Sonora' and 'San Antonio Stroll' to the hauntingly beautiful
'Women of Ireland', from Shel Silverstein's 'Rings of Grass' to arrangements of
John Philip Sousa's 'Washington Post March' and Bach's 'Brandenburg'. With superb
audio quality and detailed liner notes this enlightening and top-value 2-for-1
CD is a must for guitar lovers and fans of classic country bluegrass. Track Listing

Neko
Case Alert |
NEKO CASE Fox Confessor Brings The Flood (Bonus
CD) It`s
a regular you-know-who`s-who affair when Neko Case gets together with her friends.
And never a disappointing one at that! How can you go wrong with The Sadies, Calexico,
Howe Gelb, Paul Rigby (Bocephus King), Kelly Hogan, Jon Rauhouse, Tom V. Ray,
Rachel Flotard (Visqueen) and Garth Hudson as friends? Fox Confessor Brings The
Flood finds her singular, beloved voice in crystalline form - always seductive
with a hint of forlorn -- and quite in contrast to the powerhouse pop she brings
to The New Pornographers. Here she keeps an enticingly dark and haunting musical
edge, in line with the gothic country-gospel charm of her past solo work. But
in creeps a fascination with Russian and Ukrainian folk tales to solidify a theme.
As each song unfolds - like the next grim tale in an obscure collection of poetic
lore -- Case brings to life the mystery of a feeling, a foe, a fear, a fable.
-- Robinson, Miles Of Music (Anti-) To
celebrate the ANTI release of two of Neko Case's early works Furnace Room Lullaby

NEKO CASE
Blacklisted More
subdued than its predecessor (Furnace Room Lullaby), Neko Case's 2002 album, Blacklisted,
is the singer/songwriter's first outing not co-billed to "Her Boyfriends."
Backed by a cadre of intuitive musicians that includes multi-instrumentalist Joey
Burns and drummer John Convertino (both of Calexico) and their Giant Sand peer
Howe Gelb (on various keys), Case offers up a largely down-tempo set that's steeped
in a dreamy, noir-like atmosphere. The haunting "Deep Red Bells" masterfully
showcases the range of Case's resonant voice, while "Look for Me (I'll Be
Around)" evokes the cinematic mood of a vintage black-&-white thriller
as narrated from the perspective of the femme fatale. Even Blacklisted's most
upbeat moments--the soaring "Lady Pilot" and the twangy "Stinging
Velvet"--carry a palpable sense of melancholy, resulting in a record that's
in line with Nick Cave's dark aesthetic. (In fact, Case would go on to open for
Cave on tour, and the two would become label-mates on Anti- with subsequent releases.)
Arguably Case's most focused and consistent album, Blacklisted is the perfect
portal into her gorgeously half-lit world. (Anti) MORE

NEKO CASE
Furnace Room Lullaby Neko
Case is a Canada-based country singer who got her start (as a drummer) in music
in the rock band Maow. But she'd always wanted to pursue her love of country music--and
went after it with a vengeance. Case was not weaned on pop/mainstream country:
her voice has the back-country soul of Loretta Lynn (Patty Loveless is a good
comparison, too). Her band is in-line with her voice: tight and crisp but with
no Nashville gloss or pop-polish, featuring a lean, walloping honky-tonk twang
right out of the '60s Buck Owens sound. Though her style is traditional, Case
lyrically takes no prisoners--the assertive "Mood to Burn Bridges" tells
busy-bodies where to get off, and the smoldering "Twist the Knife" vents--with
elegance--her rage at a former lover. "Thrice All American" is a chillingly
catchy anthem to/about Takoma, Washington. Those seeking a modern take on roots-oriented
country sung by a classic voice, seek out Neko Case. (Anti) MORE

Broke, Not Broken With
irreverent, harmony driven country, The Mother Truckers deliver non-traditional
lyrics amid blazing guitars. From sin to redemption, heartbreak to salvation,
their sophomore release is a testament to originality and craft in the Americana/Alt.Country
genre. "Lyrically," on Broke, Not Broken, according to Dante Dominick
of the Austin Music Magazine, "the Truckers eschew formulaic writing at every
turn; even when broaching familiar subjects like unfaithful women and heartbreak
their stanza structure throws standards out the window. They also demonstrate
clever sense of humor without falling prey to being silly." (Funzalo) MORE

Walker's 11-track collection spills over with down-home grit and feeling. Tunes
like "Change My Way" and "Gone Before I Knew It" are steeped
in Texas-soaked guitar boogie. Simultaneously, he can turn around and deliver
tasty country soul on songs like "Steady," "2 Feet Left From The
Ceiling" and "Sun Down." The North Carolina born-and-raised musician,
who grew up on a hippie commune, also showcases a penchant for interpreting the
work of other great songwriters. His solo piano-vocal rendition of Tom Waits'
"Picture In A Frame" is quite simply gorgeous. On the James Hunter-penned
number "Kick It Around," he turns out the kind of stinging blues licks
and tough vocals that have earned him praise from artists like Delbert McClinton,
Johnny Winter, Dale Watson and Marcia Ball. (Hyena) MORE

What's
Happening Around the MOM Offices | This
week you will read about music for old people, a burning question about credits,
and demands for canine news,
TODAY
THE QUEEN AND YOUR JESTER WERE WORKING ON THIS missive. We were trying to listen
to new submissions while concentrating on our respective parts of the weekly e-mail
process. Some days we can do it but today nothing was grabbing us.
Instead
of dismissing the submissions as below par, we decided we were not in the right
frame of mind so we went to our "old people music" section of the collection
and chose Rhino's "Left of the Dial: Dispatches from the 80s Underground"
to accompany today's journey to e-mail nirvana.
The
collection is both a "who's who" and "who's that?" of 80s
college rock open to second guessing, but still a fine compilation.
For
The Queen and Your Jester this is the meat and potatoes of music. Comfort food
to be ingested when we need a musical hug.
MOMCentral
has a regular customer from the North East who is a big Lawrence Welk show fan.
She transcended from buying only titles on Welk's Ranwood (Randy Wood to some
of you) label to also purchasing music from the Welk regulards (Guy & Ralna,
Pete Fountain, Myron Floren, Lennon Sisters etc.) that might be available on other
labels. That is her comfort food, music she loves that she can rely on for enjoyment
and to provide escape when needed.
Your
Jester's courtship of The Queen, (which really consisted of "really, you
will go out with me? There isn't a hidden camera somewhere recording all of this?")
was soundtracked by REM, The Replacements, The Dream Syndicate, Roxy Music's Avalon
(when Your Jester was hoping to get lucky), X, and Los Lobos to name a few.
When
The Queen and Your Jester got married we carefully selected the key songs for
the ceremony, recession, and first dance. Tracks from Robbie Robertson, Los Lobos
and John Hiatt filled the respective slots.
We
are without kids so we have none of those moments to attach a song. The next
big moment, Your Jester supposes, will be when my ashes are spread over the infield
at Dodgers Stadium following my demise. Of course, no one wants to think about
despite what you local plot-selling cemetery says so no real thought has gone
into what "that" song will be.
Until
then, even as an old(er) codger the music of my life is going to be the music
from my youth.
LAST
WEEK YOUR JESTER neglected to mention the wildfires that raged throughout Southern
California. Your Jester just didn't want to bum your buzz, so to speak. We are
fine, everyone we know in So Cal is fine. Several friends from regions north and
south of us were evacuated but incurred no damage except from the high costs of
the minibar at the local hotels.
The
Queen and Your Jester grew up with wildfire season regularly scheduled as part
of the calendar year. Every October the Santa Ana winds kick in and brush burns.
It is like clockwork. When it happens, for us it is just part of living in Southern
California.
Admittedly,
this year's outbreak was so extreme that Your Jester was watching the news in
disbelief. Until several of you called and/or e-mailed to make sure we were ok,
it didn't occur to me that anyone outside of LA really cared. We truly appreciate
the calls of concern.
I've
said it before, and even if it is schamltzy, the best part of this job isn't the
music, it is the connections with you guys that this music enables.
YOUR
JESTER WAS TALKING TO RICH MCCULLEY earlier today when Your Jester nosily asked
Rich how the changes in the music business are effecting his career efforts. The
short answer is it is "good and bad" meaning some things label and label
infrastructure, managers and others in the support circle took care of now fall
into Rich's lap. But, he's also reaching fans in far-away places that he wouldn't
have met otherwise.
His
day job is running a studio. Part of that includes working on getting music placed
in television and film.
Your
Jester is one of those people who will not leave a film without seeing music credits.
I have to know. I have to have my suspicions confirmed. Television is a far less
satisfying experience because they rarely bother putting the songs into the credits.
Was
it some sort of an agreement that allowed/forced movies to list music credits?
I'm not really interested in who the third assistant B crew focus puller is, but
I sure want to know what music was just used in the show I just watched.
Some
shows are more organized about putting music credits on the show website, but
in an age of complete media convenience, can't someone give a rundown of all of
the music used in an hour-long episodic drama? Is it too obvious to state that
the bands would be helped tremendously if they had their songs listed right then?
Rich
is satisfied with the income the song placement brings, but it would also help
his career if he could catch a few of those who might be converted and turn them
into fans.
THE
MANGLER TELLS ME THERE IS AN OUTPOURING of requests for more puppy news. If you
must know, Satchel Moses earned a new nickname this week. He is now aka Smoocher
Moocher or The Big Mooch. Mostly, he just loves it when you talk to him.
Miles
continues to recover from his recent illness, stubbornness intact. He has taken
to quickening his pace to stay just out of my reach as I try to grab him by the
collar so I can scoop him up and assist (push) him up the three steps from the
outside of MOMCentral to the inner-sanctum.
Merle
and Satchel have taken a week off from playing tug of war with the bedroom comforter,
mostly because they are banned from that room when we aren't around to supervise
their wrestling.
Nuke
the turtle continues to happily float about his habitat.
More
dog news next week if you insist.
Until
next week, The
Queen, Your Jester, and The Mangler | |
