IT'S A CRACKER!

AMY ALLISON

Everything And Nothing
Too "Much has been made of New Yorker Amy Allison`s very distinctive voice - described by one UK national paper as sounding like Lisa Simpson after singing lessons. But for those searching for something a bit different, Allison`s delivery - pitched somewhere between Emmylou Harris` breathier Red Dirt Girl moments and Victoria Williams` twang - won`t put you off. For those already accustomed to her voice, Everything And Nothing Too will prove a treat. Warm, lush melodies drive songs like `Don`t Go To Sleep`, and the lilting `Her Hair Was Red`, backed by some great playing from guitarist David Scott who also produced the record. The ballads...prove the strongest tracks of the record. Allison also exhibits Anglophillic tendencies with `Heart Of London` and a cover of the Morrissey classic `Everyday Is Like Sunday`. Yet as soon as that cover fades, another begins as Allison takes on her father`s `Was` with much success. It proves to be the standout track on the record and Mose Allison joins his daughter on the recording, providing understated but compelling piano runs. This is fruitful ground for both father and daughter and proves the perfect way to sign off a great album." (8 out of 10) Nic Fildes, Americana-UK.com (Cheaters World)

HAYMAKER

Beyond The Break
Haymaker's previous release was Music From Ed's House, recorded at the band's drummer's home. Illness forced drummer Ed Heavener to leave the band while they were in preparation for this album, the band's second. Heavener's illness and subsequent death provides the thematic backbone for Beyond The Break. The band explores life's unplanned avenues, the travails of getting older, loss, and, importantly, finding a resolve to go forward despite all of the obstacles. Buoyed by a California-esque roots-pop sound, Haymaker layered catchy melodies and chiming, jangly guitars on top of the heartbreak. It is unfortunate that anyone has to go through the pain of losing a friend. Haymaker found a way to channel that loss into a compelling musical cycle. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (Honey Bucket Records)

IT'S A CRACKER!
LOU VARGO
American Disaster EP
The move to Nashville and partnering up with Jack Hale (producer, Johnny Cash) has focused Lou Vargo's songwriting moving him closer to the spirit of Townes, Clark, and Earle. Vargo, the former frontman for rough-and-tumble Texas roots rock band Four Mile Mule, delivers a crisp EP of emotionally revealing, personal songs. His weathered voice perfectly accompanies his reflective tales and acoustic guitar. The goal with this release, according to Vargo, was to create a handful of great songs, as opposed to getting enough music to fill an album. Hale kept Vargo on track with these five terrific songs. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (self-released)

DAVE DESMELIK

Unheard of
There is an old-soul lurking inside this Alphraetta, GA native. Dave Desmelik`s warm and weary vocals channel the plain-spoken Florida legend Ronny Elliot and Texas songwriter James McMurtry. Desmelik`s music comes off as understated, even with a frequently smoking lead guitar. Desmelik uses the phrase, "steady and slow" in "My Old Machine." The phrase could be applied to Desmelik`s work as a whole. There is a warm, gentleness to his work that makes this record so satisfying. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (self-released)

IT'S A CRACKER!
MATHEW GRIMM & THE RED SMEAR

Dawn`s Early Apocalypse
Matthew "Banger" Grimm, principal songwriter of New York`s Hangdogs, offers an unflinching look under the plastic coated complacency shield of America`s political coverall. Tart, biting, with kid gloves left in the bin, Grimm describes his new material as art that "punches you in the throat." He doesn`t mince words and he doesn`t excuse the "blue" language, because that`s the way he talks. But when he sings lines like "Before the meek claim our inheritance you`d better `Kill The Poor`", you clearly sense the sharp irony imbued in his anti-holy war ode. And with his now familiar nasal-y twang, he vents a roots-punk protest record of entertaining weight; the heady stuff you would expect from a graduate of political science and journalism. And, no doubt, from a bar room demonstrator such as he. Grimm now resides in Iowa City, where he can blatantly exorcise -- with crunchy guitar in hand - his First Amendment rights with the help of band members Jason Berge, Matt Winegardner and Eric Straumanis. Produced by Peter Lubin and Pete Anderson, the rockin` Dawn`s Early Apocalypse also features support from Charles Pettus (Tears For Fears), Doug Pettibone (Lucinda Williams) and Dusty Wakeman (Dwight Yoakam). -- Robinson, Miles Of Music (self-released)

HAUNT

As Blue As Your Dying Eyes
Matthew Hebert`s (ex-Ware River Club) new project continues the splendor of his previous efforts. Hebert`s ragged voice and this Northampton, MA band, featuring members of the Scud Mountain Boys, combine to play an elegant country-rock. The result is Hebert`s biting, confessional lyrics are pushed out front. Melodic and immediate, it is obvious from first listen that the band has created a terrific record for those that are fans of the melancholy Replacements sound. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (Faux Paus)

RICHARD MARCH

Levee Road
Jackson Griffith, the erstwhile editor of Pulse magazine, wrote "[Richard March] is at the forefront of Sacramento`s recent explosion of first-rate Americana acts. A homegrown John Hartford, with a firm grasp of American folk, bluegrass, and the iconography of rolling boxcars, and Dylan-esque political jeremiads, March at times sounds like a bluegrass Waylon." March`s voice is full of soul, reminiscent of a younger John Prine. as he lyrically searches for answers to life`s questions. His backing band provides muscular support. This is how folky rock is supposed to cover both kinds of music. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (self-released)

COLLEEN MCFARLAND

Beautiful Lie
There is a sensuality and passion when Colleen McFarland`s smoky voice flows forth. Michael McCall wrote in The Nashville Scene, "Like Buddy Miller or Lucinda Williams, McFarland infuses the blues into her mid-tempo roots-rock tunes, giving them a gritty feel and for-the-ages mysticism that keeps her lyrics from falling into the self-obsessive indulgence of many other singer-songwriters." McFarland`s "Beautiful Lie" is a smoldering gem. Fans of Patty Griffin will be thrilled with this release. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (self-released)

REX MOROUX

Royal Street Inn
Hailing from Lafayette, Louisiana, Rex Moroux (pronounced more-o) writes and performs lush three-minute stage plays. Originally intent on writing for the stage, Moroux found songwriting to be a "beautiful, simple and wonderfully enlightening form." Moroux`s lyrics and subject matter draw on the literary tradition of Southern writing. His sound, a mix of country, rock and pop, has a theatrical-feel without being bombastic. This is more of a warm, refreshing breeze, than stifling humidity. The 28 year old Moroux shows promise as a musician by bringing an interesting mix of substance and style to the form. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (self released)

MINIBAR

Desert After Rain
Hailing from Santa Monica, CA by way of the UK, Minibar successfully meld a Faces-like barroom rollick with harmony-rich laid-back California country. Lead singer Simon Petty`s rasp infuses the songs with a hint of sorrow, while the unheralded band propels the music forward. The album`s title Desert After Rain suggest a wealth of scents amongst a sparse landscape. This album captures that feeling. Fans of roots-pop like the Wallflowers, Grand Drive and Peter Bruntnell will find Minibar`s third full length among the elite. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (self-released)

KAZ MURPHY

Home For Misfits
With his Lee Hazelwood-esque vocal growl, an ear for melody, and a nod to 60s and 70s roots-pop, Kaz Murphy has created eleven songs that tell tales of ordinary people in sometimes extraordinary circumstances. Co-produced by Rich McCulley, Murphy slowly brings you into his dysfunctional world. Regulars Brian Young, John Skibic, Sully Sullivan and Jacqueline Grad are joined by McCulley, Amy Farris, Kip Boardman, Duane Jarvis and John McDuffie. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (self-released)

PSYCHEDELIC COWBOYS

Tragic Songs and Hop A Longs
The Psychedelic Cowboys come from Los Angeles - the Los Angeles of the present and the Los Angeles of the past, the 1960s to be more precise. The `Boys lace country & western sounds with a laidback, hippie vibe to create both a sunny and dusty feel. Their subtle and well-crafted songs offer an opiated glimpse into the So. Cal country-rock scene, which would include the likes of I See Hawks In LA, Jonny Kaplan and Beachwood Sparks. (Stone Legal)

ECCENTRIC SOUL: Outskirts Of Deep City

Various
After a box of thought-to-be-lost Deep City master tapes turned up in Miami in January of 2007, an idea both fascinating and ugly reared its head: Sequel. Disgusted by the thought of merely making one record to capitalize on the success of the first, we sought to turn the idea on its head. Instead of rehashing and expanding upon an already established story, The Outskirts Of Deep City serves to color in the spaces left open by its predecessor. In addition to seven previously unissued tracks, we've added thirteen other related gems from the Solid Soul, Sun Cut, Reedsville, Lloyd, and Concho labels. Artists include Betty Wright, Helene Smith, Clarence Reid, James Knight & the Butlers, Snoopy Dean, the Rollers, Frank Williams & the Rocketeers, Lynn Williams, Perk Badger, and the Rising Suns. 32 page booklet features a wealth of unpublished photographs, appendix, bibliography, and discography. FUZZ: The Sound That Changed The World
DVD
Fuzz... the sound that changed the world. The fuzz box: that tiny little box between the electric guitar and the amp...what on earth does it do? Clif Taylor explores this insane industry of noise making, from the geeky backyard "boutique" engineers building prized and "instantly collectible" clones of terribly scarce "vintage" psychedelic circuits to professional Wah Wah men, electronic gurus, capable of pitching that monster tone into a circuit bent chaos, so filthy with angst even your parents would loose control if over-exposed. Filled with hysterical drama and outlandish controversy, these mad genius rockers fight to the end of the Internet and back again for their right to create the perfect circuit. Guitar God Billy Gibbons along with Jon Spencer, J.Mascis and Chris Ross from Wolfmother, weigh in with their own insight into baddest boxes and rattiest fuzztones. Internet forums ,"gear oriented" chat rooms and electronic product conventions have become the battlefield where these master box builders meet... the ensuing trade is anything but free!

What's Happening Around the MOM Offices

This week you will read slobbering drivel, the onslaught of band documentaries, and the Darwinian evolution of a mangler.

WE'RE GIVING THANKS THIS WEEK. We give big picture thanks go to US for being the place of destination for refugees. Your Jester's family could have as easily would up settling in Cuba or Argentina which were two of the ports of call for the ship that brought my grandparents to the western hemisphere. The Queen's ancestors came through Ellis Island. The Mangler's ancestors were forcibly removed from their land and pushed to reservations. I didn't say this place always worked out well for everyone. Despite that, we all wound up in Los Angeles and here together.

We give thanks to opportunity which was denied to our respective ancestors. Now, Your Jester and The Queen are as entitled to make foolish business decisions just like everyone else!

And finally, we give thanks to you guys. Without this little enterprise that is in its 12th year, the lives of Your Jester and The Queen would be poorer and I do not mean financially. When we started this adventure Your Jester had barely been out of the state of California, let alone to Europe. We have made good friends in far off lands. Some of these will be lifelong friendships that will exist long after the quaint notion of buying music as a physical entity has long disappeared.

The underlying premise of MOM was that every city had a handful of like-minded individuals. If we could bring them together we had the makings of a business. The part we never factored in was that these people were also really interesting to talk with. We thank you for putting up with my obsessive questioning about your local town.

We thank you for sticking with us in a year of choices that didn't work out as planned. We took a beating in January and February as we transitioned to the new, now ex-, warehouse. Bringing the warehouse back to LA, and the delays that we experienced as a result, we're met with a more understanding result. Honestly, Your Jester was disappointed by some of the hostility we experienced at the beginning of the year and didn't take the criticism -- some of it quite justified -- as gracefully as I could have. Sure, this is a business, but the folks at MOMCentral have so much emotionally invested in both the music and the customers that the folks that were angered by the shipping delays didn't seem, in my mind, to see the bigger picture of what we contributed. It was a tough lesson to learn that loyalty sometimes only extends to the last time we interacted with someone.

Despite the underlying lesson that this is business, we will not let it dissuade us. The meat and potatoes of this business is the relationships, the conversations, the idea that music has the power that those on the outside will never understand.

On our annual holiday of giving thanks, we express to you our tremendous gratitude for letting us in your lives. Life would be far less interesting without you.

OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF WEEKS Your Jester has seen documentaries and/or performance films from Neil Young, The Who, and Tom Petty (four hours of Petty!). What happens when a music geek sees a music documentary? The deep catalog gets dug out and played until whatever that momentary jones is reaches fulfillment.

The Petty documentary was startling because he has had a hit on almost every record he's released. One after another. The Heartbreakers remain one of the great bands. I believe they are a tremendously underrated band, able to make change to players without sacrificing the core sound.

I learned that The Who went out onto reunion tours in the '80s because John Entwistle was broke and needed the cash. Back in the day the band had really disappointed me because I was certain the band had made enough money and all they were doing was soiling their reputation. Well, they hadn't made enough money. Who am I to judge what is enough. Interesting how 20 years of living in the real world can change perspective.

Neil Young remains an enigma. There is a creative wanderlust in his catalog. Where The Who and Petty have records that seem to build based on previous releases (and contemporary sounds), Young completely and repeatedly reinvents himself as if the slate is blank and he is starting from zero. That is what makes him so compelling and confusing. I can't say the '80s records make any more sense to me now than they did then other than those are the record Young wanted to make at that point of his career. How many artists get sued by their label for making "non-commercial records"?

The next time a spouse asked why you need all of those CDs, you can say, "Because I need to hear Neil Young's non-commercial albums from the '80s." I love having lots of music.

AS YOU READ LAST WEEK we spent the better part of seven days shelving away stock. Our new location is low lighting. We have high shelves. They fit, but tend to butt up against the fixtures. Let's say the warehouse suffers from a "low light" situation. Both literally, and figuratively. There are some dark spots in there. Your Jester has hooked up a hand-held utility lamp to illuminate the outer-reaches.
The joke has been that we need miners helmets so we can see what is right in front of our face.

The Mangler seems to have the genes for adaptation to this low-light situation. I am completely unable to see anything even with all of the lights on, doors open and an extra lamp. Not the Mangler. He seems to possess the ability to see in the dark... as if he has radar... like a bat.

It is kind of funny to see two grown men squinting at stacks of hastily alphabetized CDs searching for a single item amongst thousands. But, we'll take this over asking someone via long distance to go look for us. Even if it means one of us has to use previously unknown super powers to see in the dark.

Until next week,

The Queen, Your Jester, and The Mangler
