IT'S
A CRACKER! HACIENDA BROTHERS Music for Ranch & Town (Live)
Music for Ranch & Town"is the first in a series of CDs produced by the
Hacienda Brothers that will feature rare live recordings and studio outtakes.
This initial release showcases the band live on one of their early tours of Europe
and captures the intense energy of a Hacienda Brothers show. The Bros kick things
into gear with an extended version of their instrumental "Railed" and
end the CD 14 songs and 70 minutes later with the unreleased Gonzalez show-stopper
"Gone". In between there are classic versions of "Mental Revenge",
"Cowboys to Girls", "Walkin' On My Dreams" and "Cry Like
A Baby". Previously unreleased tracks include Johnny Cash's "Home of
the Blues", Johnny Paycheck's "If I'm Gonna Sink" and a new instrumental
"Brotherized". What perhaps might be the highlight on the CD is a 12
minute version of the accordion-blues ridden "Since I Met You Baby".
If you've ever been to a Hacienda Brothers show, this is a must have for all (Self

A CRACKER! GRAINBELT Trouble Coming Down Like
its spiritual (and actual) predecessor, Grainbelt infuses their country with the
ragged glory of cowpunk. The album is loose, giving the feeling that it poured
from the band, like a satisfying draft beer. What they lack in studio polish is
more than accounted for by swagger. This is music to drink fight and have fun
with. Howe Glassman's impassioned vocals sound like a man who is telling you the
best story you ever. You can hear the grin in his delivery. This is glorious roots-rock
from the punk side of the Americana family tree. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music

A CRACKER! THE
HAMMERS Newark Fried Chicken North
New Jersey's The Hammers smolder and smoke. Their brand of R&B influenced
rock draws from the origins. Nods to Big Joe Turner, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Sun
R&B provide the backbone. The band's seasoned vets make their originals sound
like they were birthed 50 years ago. The music has style, but doesn't sound stylized.
This is a confident band of exceptional musicians that show their love of the
roots of rock and roll, adding to the canon, not just aping it. -- Jeff Weiss,

A CRACKER! HARDING
Across The Road From
pain and loss comes motivation and inspiration. The passing of a long-time friend
of Dave Harding, Richmond Fontaine's bass player, provided the impetus for this
record. Several of the songs were written for his late friend Todd Scherer, while
several on this album are tracks Harding composed with his friend. The rough-hewn
sound of Harding's vocals brings forth the feeling of what it must have sounded
like back in the garage when the two old friends were first working out the idea
of being in a band. Knowing its origin, it serves as a fine tribute to a friend
who helped propel Harding to success as a member of Richmond Fontaine. -- Jeff

A CRACKER! LARRY
HOSFORD High On Livin His
roots are the 70s California country rock of New Riders, Commander Cody mixed
with a fair amount of Western Swing. He's not influenced by those bands. He was
one of those bands. Larry Hosford has more than a few miles on his music career
odometer, having served in a semi-legendary psych band in San Francisco before
relocating to Salinas, California, finding his voice and slightly askew viewpoint
of the world. After scoring a deal with Shelter Records, he plied his trade as
a contract songwriter before again settling back in California. Through all his
journey, Hosford has maintained a particularly warped and entertaining worldview.
High On Livin, originally started in 1987, came out of retirement 20 years later
with a little touching up, but still sounding like it was recorded in the early
70s. Fans of the Northern California country-rock sound will find High On Livin
an oasis in a desert of uninteresting music. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (Hoe

HUFF Gravity It
was his interest in his older bothers record collection that brought him to The
Rolling Stones, Muddy Waters and T.Rex. Several decades - and several releases
- later one can still see how these early influences continue to inform his music;
as well as his "road-ready" roots music background... These tracks feature
name worthy folks such as Bucky Baxter (Bob Dylan, Ryan Adams, Steve Earle) on
guitar, Dan Baird (Georgia Satellites) on bass and guitar, and Brad Pemberton
(Ryan Adams) drums. Gravity Producer Adam Landry adds a fair share guitar and
backing vocals on this powerful, well-crafted mix that finds Allison Moorer chiming
in on the roots rocker "In The Dark". (Exodus Records) REVIEW

remastered and expanded three CD set featuring an extended version of this legendary
1972 concert experience that helped to catapult the careers of Man and Hawkwind.
The Greasy Truckers Party took place at The Roundhouse, London on February 13th,
1972 in front of an audience of more than 2000. The party was seen as the final
gathering of freaks, hippies and anarchists. The concert bill also featured the
under-rated band Brinsley Schwarz (featuring Nick Lowe and future Rumour members
Bob Andrews and Brinsley Schwarz), pioneers of the Pub Rock genre and freak extraordinaire
Magic Michael. The concert was staged to raise funds for the Greasy Truckers organization,
who raised funds for various local causes such as homelessness, advice on dealing
with being busted for possession of cannabis and other mind altering substances
and other social issues. Disc One features five tracks from Man. Disc Two features
16 from Brinsley Schwarz and one from Magic Michael. Disc Three contains 12 songs

WAINWRIGHT Rufus Does Judy At Carnegie Hall [2 CD] [LIVE]
On
June 14, 2006, Rufus Wainwright took to the stage to recreate "the Greatest
Show of All Time ever staged in honor of the Greatest Show of All Time"--Judy
Garland's legendary 1961 concert at Carnegie Hall; song-for-song, in its original
venue. Garland fanatics feared a fiasco, but the show was a triumph. His sophisticated
act of homage to his hero was both a loving tribute and an arch commentary on
the original, featuring classics like "Over The Rainbow," "Come
Rain Or Come Shine" and "Zing! Went The Strings Of My Heart." Backed
by a 36-piece orchestra and arranged by the Broadway famed Stephen Oremus (Wicked,
Avenue Q), Rufus's vocal talent soars over those classic melodies on this 2-disc
set. (Geffen Records) MORE

A CRACKER! TREVOR ALGUIRE As Of Yesterday
Many an artist was inspired by the launch of the modern alt.country movement.
A decade and a half after Uncle Tupelo forever changed the face of music. Alguire`s
second solo album "As of Yesterday" possesses the same essence of muscularity
countered with sensitivity that Tupelo was so adept at providing. Andrew Carver
of The Ottawa Sun called "As of Yesterday," "A sure-handed country
rock album in the vein of Steve Earle and Tom Petty... Alguire has found just
the right voice for his tales of weary travelers and lonely wanderers." By
any measure, the lineage from the roots of Bristol, Tennessee that ran through
Illinois has turned north while it takes a run through Canada. -- Jeff Weiss,

Eric Brace`s increasingly soulful singing give his poignant songs about family

from real life experiences. Newly added piano player Jen Gunderman adds a richness
to Brace`s singing. 10 years into what started out a part-time adventure, Brace

A CRACKER! JAIMI SHUEY Wrong Girl
"It's the achy twang in Jaimi Shuey's inviting voice that immediately captures
your attention. You feel her yearning for love in "How Long", sympathize
with her hurt in "The Wrong Girl", and share her sense of adventure
in "Wild Things". That strong opening trio invites comparisons to a
young Lucinda Williams. But just when you think Shuey is headed off down gravel
roads, she shifts gears with the stylish, jazz flavored "Ouija", a tune
reminiscent of another southern California chanteuse, Eleni Mandell. The latter
half of her ten track debut swings confidently between dusty honky-tonk and more
sophisticated lounge. On "Country Girl" and "Jerkwatertown",
she offers evocative portraits of small town girls, while "A Bite" is
a fun, food-equals-sex ditty about "a hungry girl." A memorable debut,
Wrong Girl proves Shuey has the right stuff." - Michael Berick, No Depression.

A CRACKER! THE STARLINGS Songbook
The nucleus of this folksy, bluegrass infused Americana combo is the duo of Joy
Mills (guitar, mandolin) and Tom Parker (guitar, harmonica). The engaging Mills
sounds a bit like Kelly Willis on a folk binge, while Parker`s plaintive, mellow
voice warms the many harmonies with a most pleasing effect. The supporting players
tastefully add Dobro, mandolin, fiddle, banjo, etc., keeping a lively feel throughout.
Songbook offers 12 earnest and organic original tunes - most of which penned by
Mills - and a straight version of the classic "Long Black Veil", on
which the two duet. Capturing the ageless quality of The Carter Family, as in
the two Parker penned duets, "Working Man Blues" and "Acorn",
The Starlings clearly have a deep appreciation for the classics but are by no
means a retro act. Simply a terrific one. -- Robinson, Miles Of Music (self-released)

VASHTI BUNYAN Some Things Just Stick In You Mind: Singles
LP Following
the amazing success story of Vashti Bunyan`s recent reemergence as an artist after
an exile of over 30 years comes the release of Some Things Just Stick In Your
Mind, a comprehensive collection of early recordings from the period prior to
her classic 1970 Just Another Diamond Day album. Titled after the (Jagger/Richards-penned)
debut single which opens the double-album, Some Things attempts to both draw a
line under the past and also to set the record straight regarding the disparity
between how Bunyan viewed (and still views) herself and the way the public views
her as an artist. While she is widely regarded as folk singer these recordings
instead reveal Bunyan as a pop singer. This complete collection of Bunyan`s 25
existing early recordings is a young London girl`s series of beautiful love songs
that resonate profoundly via an almost brutal efficiency and honesty. The melodies
seem timelessly sweet and addictive, the vision at once delicate but somehow tough
as granite. Track Listing: Some Things Just Stick In Your Mind - Decca single,

What's
Happening Around the MOM Offices | This
week you will read about distillation and not much else.
MANY
YEARS AGO THE QUEEN AND Your Jester were at the now-defunct NXNW music conference.
We sat in on a panel where Sandy Pearlman (Blue Oyster Cult, Clash) spoke of the
great equalization that was going to take place once use of the Internet reached
mainstream. By some measure he was absolutely correct. Everyone that can afford
a computer and software now has the minimal set of tools needed to create music.
Having the ability to make music and having a viewpoint, let alone talent, are
far different issues.
The
Queen, Your Jester, and The Mangler work in a bit of a vacuum, going through the
volumes of music that is released every week searching for things that are good,
interesting, important, good collection filler, nice greatest hits collections,
and, sometimes, crap that we know we can sell. There is lots of interesting music
and very little ick in what we offer up. Having not taken advantage of the Web
2.0 bells and whistles on our site. (Honestly, you've read comment sections on
websites. It invites the worst possible behavior in people. Something about the
relative anonymity and the ability to write exactly what is on your mind at that
moment is a bad combination.)
Accordingly.
we old school it. Web 1.0... or web 0.0. We cull the offerings, pare them down,
offer up a selection. Either you like or don't. We're always open to suggestions.
In fact, we encourage suggestions unless it is your cousin's band that you know
blows but you are trying to pretend you really like them. But, that's what we
do.
Every
so often we get a thank you from one of the bands because we let them "in
the club." While we appreciate the sentiment, the response is always the
same. That the band or artist made a record that we "got" makes it easy.
We would swing the doors wide open if every person who took advantage of the democratization
of popular music actually made music that fit into that self-defined criteria
of "good."
We're
the first to admit that there is lots of music that eludes us. Accordingly,
we try to be what we are: a sieve or filter for the music we do get, that we think
is at least decently executed and worth a listen if not several.
Don't
think for a minute that our taste is unanimous. It is a democratic process. Two
can out-vote the third. So, use your "lobbying" dollars and/or chocolate
wisely if you are looking to "influence" one of the judges. There are
times we'll put on a submission, one of us will love it and be told, with little
ceremony, that we have no idea what we're talking about.
So
you wonder why we grill you on the phone. We're insecure and need our opinions
validated, of course!
A
saying Your Jester uses way too often is. "This isn't rocket science."
No one is going to die if we pick the wrong music. But, we try to pick the right
music more often than not.
THE
HOLIDAYS ARE FAST APPROACHING. If you are ordering presents for someone we strongly
recommend you call it in. That way we can shepherd it through the system and make
sure it gets out on time. In addition to being sensitive about our musical taste,
we would also prefer to not ruin someones Christmas or Hanukkah. I don't know
if we have an Kwanzaa celebrators amongst our regulars. I do know we have a few
Pagans and Wiccans.
A
short one this week because we're still playing catch up and Your Jester has some
uncle duties to attend to.
Until
next week, The
Queen, Your Jester, and The Mangler | |
