A CRACKER! TERRY ANDERSON & THE OLYMPIC ASS-KICKING TEAM When
The Oakteam Come To Town (Live)
"...Terry Anderson doesn't try to reinvent the music, he just distills it
to its glorious essence - fast, loud and, above all, fun - and he does it with
an uproarious, hick-happy brilliance. Anderson can do straight-up and melodic
in winning fashion - see the likes of "Weather or Not" and "Sunday
Dress." But most of the time the North Carolinian and his mighty OAKTeam
are gleefully tearing up pea patches like "Daddy Had a Wreck" and "I
Feel a Drunk Comin' On." The influences are obvious - NRBQ, Faces, Chuck
Berry, etc. - but it's also clear how smartly and colorfully Anderson twists them
to create his own indelible rock-and-roll personality." -- Nick Cristiano,

After 10+ years of rockin' the international honky tonk circuit with his bands,
as a solo artist and playing guitar for the likes of Waylon Jennings, Ray Price,
and The Supersuckers, Austin's Jesse Dayton made the decision to pay homage to
the classic country duet recordings that he grew up on in the 70's. He found the

dark tales of heroes gone wrong and villains redeemed. Mojo Magazine describes
Elliott as "Craggy but literary country blues like Jerry Lee Lewis if he
were a beat poet or Townes Van Zandt with a Ph.D..." (Blue Heart records)

CHUCK PROPHET
The Hurting Business On
the Hurting Business, Chuck Prophet produces dark tales where downtown rock collides
with uptown soul - where his rootsy guitar work is contrasted with turntable samples.
These are some very modern urban blues that the gruff-voiced, ex-Green On Red
guitarist sings about - it's a world where "Dick Clark's got the Tombstone
Blues." (Cooking Vinyl)

DANIEL
JOHNSTON Late Great Daniel Johnston: Discovered Covered (Re-mastered)
Daniel Johnston has long been a cult favorite on the indie and punk scenes,
known for his homemade cassettes of whimsical and strangely beautiful pop songs.
But don`t be fooled by the title; he`s still with us, much like Townes Van Zandt
was when he issued his Late, Great album. Discovered Covered boasts an all-star
lineup including Tom Waits, M. Ward, Vic Chesnutt and Clem Snide paying long overdue
tribute to Johnston. Some interesting pairings here too; Teenage Fanclub and Half
Japanese`s Jad Fair join forces on "My Life Is Starting Over Again,"
and Sparklehorse`s Mark Linkous, who produced Johnston`s 2003 effort Fear Yourself,
is joined by the Flaming Lips` Wayne Coyne for "Go." Disc 2 features
the original version of each song by Daniel, plus an unreleased song from Daniel`s
album Lost And Found. Track Listing Disc 1: My Life Is Starting Over Again - (with

A CRACKER! KAREN COLLINS & THE BACKROADS BAND Tail Light
Blues
The daughter of a Virginia coal miner, Karen Collins` hardscrabble honky tonk
effortlessly bridges the gap between authentic and modern, deftly avoiding the
retro cliches that bedevil so many others that try to keep the old traditions
alive. Collins suffers no fools. Using her zesty voice and backed by a an exemplary
band Collins isn`t afraid to show a man the door if he has done her wrong. Her
originals stand alongside a handful of honky tonk gems. Throughout this excellent
disc, Collins` roots are showing. In this case, though, that`s a very good thing
if you happen to love honky tonk. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (self-released)

A CRACKER! JUANITA FAMILY AND FRIENDS Juanita Family and Friends
From the dusty red arroyos of America's southwest and the verdant hills of Portland,
Oregon comes the Juanita Family. Their plaintive tales amble comfortably in the
tradition of vintage country artists like Patsy Cline and Woody Guthrie, with
an ease and authentic style all their own - never to cutesy or retro. A sweet
surprise from the group also known as the Last Of The Juanitas - when they're
playing a noisy brand of math metal. None of that here, though. In this guise,
the lackadaisical joy of Lana Rebel's vocals meanders over heart-tugging tunes,
unadorned and breathtakingly honest. (self-released) REVIEW

IT'S
A CRACKER! THE LONESOMES Quick Fixes & Power Trips
Urgency and insurgency are at the root of The Lonesomes` "Quick Fixes &
Power Trips," the Portland quartet`s rocking follow-up to their breezier
2004 debut "Circling The Sun." Bolstered by the addition of lead guitarist
Mark Dybvig (Thrillbilly), The Lonesomes have delivered 12 varied takes on 70s
rock that are both sweet and searing. Literate and character-driven in a way similar
to early Springsteen, the tunes put a modern spin on timeless themes of war, God
and love, at times echoing the disappointment of an American public that feels
duped. The overall sound, though, is much more early Jayhawks and Velvet Crush.
Produced by 44 Long`s Brian Berg (John Doe, Robert Pollard), who lends keyboards
and occasional backing vocals, "Quick Fixes & Power Trips" is an
edgy romp in the vein of Drive-By Truckers and Son Volt, where intimate story-telling
meets heavy guitar licks, fish-hook bass lines and machine-gun drum rolls. (self-released)

A CRACKER! THE LONESOMES Circling The Sun
The sweet, rootsy pop of The Lonesomes breezes about with a curiously sinister
naivet. The Portland, OR trio swings from airy to brooding with lackadaisical
ease on their debut, Circling The Sun. There`s no lack of rock though, as evident
with a small handful of numbers that blaze with near-psychedelic fervor. With
a sound that recalls a mix between Wilco and Big Star, perhaps fronted by a twangy
Wayne Coyne, this debut offers a unique soundscape filled with spacious melody
and a haunting vibe. Lead vocalist and guitarist Phil Favorite possesses a somewhat
tentative, slightly unnerved, hushed voice that keeps these pop-ish melodies on
edge, providing the same experience for the listener. The 13 tracks on Circling
The Sun were produced by Brian Berg (44 Long, John Doe, Stephen Malkmus &
The Jicks), who also adds keys, cello and vocals, as well as guest guitarists
Peter Frajola and Caleb Miles. (self-released) REVIEW

A CRACKER! THE SALTY DOGS Autoharpoon
The second album by Arkansas` Salty Dogs continues the emulate the "Ghost
of Buck, Spirit of Dwight" sound from their first album. Brad Williams`s
songs are pure and honest as he effortlessly moves from country to gospel and
back. The backing musicians, Bart Angel (drums), Mike Nelson (bass) and Nick Devlin
(guitars and lap steel) are a terrific country band. The beauty of this album
is it captures that same kind of magic Dwight Yoakam offered up 20 years ago and
Owens long before him. The music is essentially rural, but not primitive. It is
every man, but the folks in the big city can relate. Second time out and the Salty
Dogs have again produced an excellent real country record. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles

A CRACKER! STAR SPANGLES Dirty Bomb
Mix the bouncy, clever power pop of Fountains of Wayne and anthemic choruses --
complete with entire band sing-alongs -- of 80s punk/college rock and you will
quickly get a sense of the Star Spangles. Guitars are influenced by the Johnnys:
Ramone and Thunders. This release might not change the world`s problems, but for
13 gloriously fun tracks, you might forget for a few minutes that the outside
world exists. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (Tic Records) REVIEW

While this might seem like a backwards reference, Three Day Threshold are like
the Pogues, but doing country. Against The Grain is rowdy fun, a super-charged
roots-rock assault with glorious choruses primed for a drunken sing-along. If
this record is any indication, they must be a smokin live band because on disc
they tear it up. -- Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music (Hi-N-Dry) REVIEW

What's
Happening Around the MOM Offices | This
week you will read about the forgotten holiday, a near-death experience, and classic
cars.
WE
USED TO COUNT ON THE LOCAL NEWS for important announcements like the clocks falling
back or springing forward. We used to count on local news for news, but that's
a different discussion. Even though we know have the world's information at our
fingertips, all a Google or Yahoo search away, Your Jester has found it incredibly
easy to miss floating date events. Such as Hanukkah. Christmas is December 25th
every year. Hanukkah's dates change annually because it is based on the Hebrew
calendar, not the Gregorian calendar that is the de facto standard of Western
civilizations. The Hebrew calendar isn't everyday useful so we don't keep one
around the house. The Queen will rarely say something like, "Remember to
take Miles to the vet at 10:00 on 27 Kislev 5768." That would be Friday,
Dec 7th, 2007.
Since
Your Jester was old enough to change the channels on the TV ("Jeffrey, don't
spin that dial so fast, you will break it." I spun it fast and broke it.)
local news was part of the daily routine. We could count on Tom Brokaw or Tom
Snyder, both of whom worked in the LA market before going to the network, to give
you a reminder when things like daylight savings or important, but not mainstream,
American holidays were starting.
You
Jester missed the beginning of Hanukkah this year because 20+ years ago someone
decided news wasn't important enough to financially break even or lose money,
therefore local news became nothing but footage of police chases or the latest
kidnapped blond, therefore I stopped watching local news, therefore I had no one
to remind me when Hanukkah started, therefore I didn't mention it last week, much
to the disappointment of my desert-dwelling, Mah Jong-playing mother.
So,
mom, blame the big entertainment networks, not your adoring middle son, for missing
the beginning of Hanukkah.
She'll
buy that excuse, right?
THERE
ARE THINGS IN MUSIC THAT ARE INARGUABLE. The greatness of Hank Williams, Elvis
(pre-military years), The Beatles, Bob Dylan and so on. That doesn't mean music
fans don't dispute the greatness of the aforementioned legends because that is
part of the fun of this thing we do. However, there are some areas where you have
to tread carefully. You can't make statements like, "That is the worst band
I have ever heard. It exemplifies everything that is wrong with classic rock,"
in reference to The Band. Your Jester did not make that statement as The Band
is one of the great groups of all time. The Queen agrees with that position as
well as finding Robbie Robertson pretty dreamy.
But,
someone at MOMCentral had the temerity to refer to Richard Manual's vocals on
"I Shall Be Released" on the live album "Before the Flood"
as "awful." Them's fighting words! Manual's vocals on that track are
haunting and gorgeous. The younger more impetuous Your Jester would have thrown
said offender out of the store, even if he is a staff member.
The
more mature Your Jester now merely passive-aggressively outs the offender, leaving
the throngs of regulars to chide and berate that unnamed person when you speak
to him on the phone. Did Your Jester say "him"? I've said more than
I should.
Arguing
about music's relative greatness is an exercise in futility, of course, But when
someone is flat out wrong, well, that needs to be corrected!
CARS
ARE INTERTWINED WITH MUSIC. Whether celebrated in song, the memory of the music
blasting from your own car speakers, or music coming out of someone else's car,
the two go hand in hand. Lately Your Jester has been arguing the merits of the
Camaro as GM is reintroducing the model. I was decidedly a Mustang fan. Like picking
UCLA over USC, Coke over Pepsi, it was Mustang or Camaro. Camaro drivers were
lunkheads that drove too fast, played bad music, and had sleazy mustaches. Mustang's
were cooler. They had the fastback and the Boss 302. Mustang drivers didn't look
so greasy. Steve McQueen drove a mustang. Burt Reynolds drove a Trans Am (technically
a Firebird but the profile fits). McQueen, all the way.
Music
isn't only about what is coming out of the speakers. It is how you imagine yourself
while listening to that music. Not that Your Jester was ever a cool guy, but the
idea of cruising around, impressing the girls with music blasting. That's a Mustang,
not a Camaro. For the record, Your Jester drove a 1976 Mercury Capri which was
far off the radar of both "cool" and the girls.
IF NOTHING
ELSE WE ARE HERE TO SHARE GLORY, not consume the spotlight. Longtime customer
and obsessive guitar collector Rick from DC, Amsterdam and, uh, Arkansas, turned
us on to the new phenomenally good Hacienda Brothers release. Rick, who calls
every Thursday, usually to give us a few minutes of grief and talk about great
music, has been a regular for as long back as we can recall. He's seen everyone
come and go over the years, insists Dave Edmunds is one of the all-time greats
and, most importantly. is going to give someone in this office an earful when
he reads the disparaging comments about The Band!
Until
next week, The
Queen, Your Jester, and The Mangler | |
