Gary - Sox Homer, Lover of all things Boston, doesn't get the West Coast

01. Fountains of Wayne -- Traffic & Weather
Not their best album, but better than the rest here. These guys just are perfect pop craftsmen... Witty, catchy and upbeat with smart lyrics and very catchy melodies. In a group of 10 records, this makes the #1 spot based on the fact that the record from beginning to end is excellent and each song is worthy. The rest of the pack here can't make that claim.

02. Ryan Adams - Easy Tiger
Ryan would have had #1 if he edited this down, remove 3 or 4 songs
from the middle of the pack, and he's got a winner. Some of his best
work is on this record. With a song like "Off Broadway", "Rip Off or The Sun Also Sets", he's hitting his stride.

03. Bruce Springsteen - Magic
Don't call it a comeback! But boy, eerily sounding better than he ever as and echo's the past of The River and Darkness on this. Thank God, I was worried we'd be reviewing another folk record. Note: This is clearly a record that Little Steven had his fingerprints all over, and thats a good thing. I really love songs like "Girls in Summer Clothes", "Own Worst Enemy" not because they are catchy and very accessable, but because it puts The Boss back on the map for writing about things we all wanted hear (again);Streets, girls, cars etc. It's like I'm back in 1978 again. Thank you.

04. Shins - Wincing The Night Away
In fact, their last record was great, this is better! Much less of the quirky nature, more of the stronger side of his writing and far better vocal performance. Not to say the last record was bad, but its sort of a "cute" record, where this is far more compelling to listen too and has a more polished and serious nature to it. The layers and texture of vocals are what make this record.

05. Mute Math - Mute Math
This record is pretty interesting. Ex-Christian rockers from Earthsuit, that would make anyone 'suspicious'... But this is not a bunch of religious nut jobs making wishy-washy feel good music. Yes its "feel good", but in a very smart way. Resembles that of the Police (from the Synchronicity period), and U2 from the Unforgettable Fire period, these guys are just incredible musicians with good songsand very, very smart live performers. Yes, that's a Keytar. But if you have been watching bands lately, these guys are a breath of fresh air.

06. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Baby 81
Dirty, garage... gritty and hook laden. Probably one of the better albums of the year for me but I dropped this to 6 because, honestly, you can listen to a Jesus and the Mary Chain record and get the same feeling. Not that its a bad thing, its just a little too much
of a "tribute".

07. White Stripes - Icky Thump
Loud guitars, noise, awkward drums, eastern indian influenced music, count me in! It's like a Led Zep record but its not, and thats a good thing. Jack White alwaysseems to one-up himself, and this is a pretty one-ups manship. The song Icky Thump is probably one of his better ones not because its catchy, but because it simply is
completely "out there", AND catchy.

08. Modest Mouse - We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank
I loved XTC, I miss XTC. Not anymore. Adding guitarist Johnny Marr (from the Smith's) gives this band a rich and more "jangly" sound that is a lot less "dark" to the ears. In past records, you got the feeling that Brock's vocals on top of the music was being muddled and hidden, with this record, its bright and much more up lifting.

09. Sarah Borges - Diamonds In The Dark
Saw Sarah a couple times around here in Boston, and was convinced that someone could play shit kicking music from Boston -- terrific record, good performance all around. I kept coming back to this one, over and over.

10. Loudon Wainwright III - Strange Weirdo's
This is a first for me. If you would have asked me 20 years ago if I'd be listening to a Wainwright record, I would have laughed, but I've had this in my queue and listened to it over and over, and when that happens, its an indication that regardless of the artist, its gotta be good... The song Daughter appears in "Knocked Up", which the song alone is worthy of someone's playlists, but the rest of the record is solid and
really makes me wonder how I missed this guy in the past.

Kenny Schnurstein - Music business survivor. Might do a movie of the week on how her got out of the business alive and sane.

01. Josh Ritter – The Historical Conquests of
Josh sounds like a God from a faraway land! After one listen you will think to yourself - how can songs be this good!? Ritter has the ability to articulate the emotions of the heart with unique allegory, storytelling and passion.

02. Rogue Wave - Asleep At Heaven's Gate
I don't think there is a better feeling in the world than tooling down the road on a warm, summer day/night with your new favorite song blasting out of the speakers…"Lake Michigan" is my new favorite song!!

03. The Bees - Octopus
SOUNDS LIKE: The Beta Band without all the artsy detours and experimental tendencies. My faves…the addictive jazzy/Latin groove of "Stand" and the modern psych-pop of "Love In The Harbour".

04. Papercuts - Can't Go Back
Jason Robert Quever finds a home on indie icon Devandra Banhart's Gnomonsong label, but, we don't care that the cool kids approve of him. We just like that he writes timeless folk-pop songs that are so sweet, and so sad, and so wonderful!

05. The Blakes - The Blakes
Ranging from raw, noisy garage punk, to new wave-influenced dance-rock and even a sweet ballad now and then, whatever the style their instantly memorable songs and are ridiculously catchy. The track "Don't Bother Me" is one of those perfect songs to start off a cd-mix with.

06. Richmond Fontaine - Thirteen Cities
Listening to this record…my heart bends, then breaks. I've mentioned this before, how the task at hand is making it sound or feel or read like something that hasn't already gone before. The Oregon-Coast country band, are able to do that once again, -- features sweet arrangements ranging from lone acoustic guitar to Tex-Mex brass and accordions. My faves -- "$87 And A Guilty Conscience…", "The Kid From Belmont Street" and "Capesized".

07. Chesterfield Kings - Psychedelic Sunrise
They manage to summon the spirit of the Stones and the Ramones simultaneously. Check out the sleazy, strutting, boogie-rock in the song "Up and Down".

08. Extra Golden - Hera Ma Nono
Hera Ma Nono is the exhilarating sophomore effort from Kenyan and American cooperative Extra Golden. Kenyan benga music and American rock first met with a friendly handshake on the group's 2006 debut (one of my top 10 records of last year), Ok-Oyot System. Extra Golden is fearless and explosive with the most beautiful sounds.

09. V/A - Summer Records Anthology
Answer honestly and no peeking at your neighbors papers. Proceed. True or False: You can't get enough of that sweet, sweet Canadian-Jamaican music? You wake in the middle of the night, sweaty and humming Johnny Osbourne's "Love Makes The World Go Round"? If you answered True to the following, you've got a need my friend. Pick up this release.

10. Dean & Britta - Back Numbers
Indie-rocks cutest couple made a near flawless release. For the perfect pop of "Words You Used To Say"alone!! The album will glide across your speakers effortlessly. And, the Lee Hazlewood and Ann-Margaret cover, "You Turn My Head Around" will make you weep.

What's Happening Around the MOM Offices

This week you will read about... well, not much.

SOME THINGS REMAIN CONSISTENT. Or, to use a bad pun, The Song Remains the Same. The mystery box of baked goods arrived from Utah, as it does every year. We're not sure why we are the recipients but who turns away brownies? We received a couple of bottles of wine and a few Christmas cards. A typical holiday season.

The MOMCentral elves have been working at XMas full throttle, not to be confused with the normal full throttle. This is the not, "Please let me pass." This is, "Get out of the way. I need to do this now!" It has been intense, but in a decent way. Let's put it this way, we are almost to the end and Your Jester hasn't "ruined Christmas" yet for anyone. That, my faithful, is a big deal because every year we get a handful of hysterical calls from people who, for a variety of reasons, many of them out of our control, have not received their shipments in time for the holiday.

Not getting yelled at is a huge plus. Receiving brownies is a huge plus. After this tumultuous year, still having customers is a plus.

This sounds cliche, or maybe like an airline commercial, but we know you have choices and appreciate your patronage.

Have a happy holiday and a safe, but fun, new year.

Until next week,

The Queen, Your Jester, and The Mangler
